After a 90 minute cardio workout, I was ready to chow down. I ordered the tuna sandwich and a beet salad. The sandwich would of been plenty but beets are my favorite and I was being a fatty and needed both. The sandwich was great. With the best sourdough bread I think I've ever had. The beet salad...HEAVEN!!! A beautiful bed of mixed greens, with roasted beets, creamy goat cheese...Seriously I'm drooling as I wrote this. Absolutely delicious! Summary: good "hidden" place to grab a sandwich, soup, salad, coffee or dessert, albeit sort of overpriced for a sandwich ------ Ginger Corner Market is small, hipstery cafe across the street from Grant Park. Here are the sandwiches I've tried: - Roast beef sandwich (~$8.50), which included a small side salad and blew my mind when I tasted sweet, sweet caramelized onions inside. It was GENIUS paired with the creamy spread that had the faintest hint of horseradish. However, the (wheat or rye?) bread was a tad dry and too thick for the amount of filling in the sandwich. The amount of arugula was meager, which was sad because it was peppery and not bitter at all; I wanted more for sure. The cheese was sliced pretty thin and probably wouldn't have made much of a difference if I removed it. Meat lovers would be disappointed that the roast beef wasn't piled on high, but I thought it was okay because it was pretty salty. As for my tiny cup of potato salad, it was your average mustard and mayo based potato salad. - Cucumber hummus sandwich. Although the cucumber tasted fresh, the hummus lacked distinctive flavor and the roasted red bell pepper tasted really astringent, not sweet and smoky at all. I wasn't a fan. Dessert, usually $3-4 for a pastry, seems to be a hit or miss here: - Flourless chocolate cake. I enjoyed the light, melt in your mouth texture and the slightly crackly crust. It could have had a deeper chocolate flavor, though. - Carrot cake ($3.50). This was an abomination. The cheesecake frosting was alright, but the cake itself had a hard, solid, gelatinous texture. The carrot was shredded, not grated, way too big and did nothing to lend the cake flavor or moisture. - Pecan praline cupcake ($3). Not only was the pecan-studded cupcake relatively flavorless, but it was also dry and crumbly. I've had boxed cake from Ralphs more moist than that. Another hidden gem that was introduced to by a friend who lives close by. This quaint little market which is located right on the corner of Michigan (which I blew past). There is a ton of street parking around the area with a nice little park across the street. Already knew what we were ordering as my buddy was craving their BLT. It was pretty busy inside with almost every table being occupied. We luckily finished ordering our sandwiches as a couple was finishing up. Our BLT's were brought out within a few minutes. The bacon was perfectly crispy and had a nice subtle sweetness. The only thing I would've changed would've been to see whether they could serve the egg over medium (we requested the addition of the egg to our BLT). I told six people about this gem in the span of 24 hours. If that doesn't scream five stars, I don't know what does. A half sandwich (their special of fried chicken) and antipasti Salad was $8.50. UNHEARD OF. And this was a generous serving of their antipasti and the half fried chicken was a mouthful. Also the smell of bacon permeates the place and they have cute gift items and EVERY bottled non-alcoholic beverage under the sun (Topo Chico...regular and grapefruit!), as well as delicious sounding boutique wines. This place is so good, I feel the need to say a prayer. "Dear Lord, bless this spot. Because it is My Jam!" Stumbled upon this spot as my wife was getting her hair did up the street. I walked into Ginger New Years morning after panic remembering that Pasadena parking enforcement requires an overnight pass and is ruthless in their quest for fines. Ginger's doors were open and I realized after two women had walked in that I lucked out and found a coffee spot. (Admittedly not for myself but for my SO) Well...they were closed but hosting a get together for friends and family. Was feeling a sandwich for lunch so this place popped up first and after seeing the pic of the pastrami, I had to go. Nice and friendly staff. The pastrami was one of best I have tried, great flavor and seasoned well. It was topped with some horseradish which I was excited to try but it fell short with heat. Overall would go back and try some of the other sandwiches they have. Heard good things on their BLT and have some cookies there that looked good. Stopped in for a refresher for the kiddos while they played at the park across the street. Adorable place! Fun, cheap little toys for the kids to destroy while they play at the park, tasty coffee/latte, and the cookie and old fashioned candy we got was spot on. The lady who runs this joint (assuming she is the one) was nice, friendly, and helpful. They have a few tables outside and tables inside. Parking is street parking. This market + cafe is concealed in the heart of Pasadena due north of Caltech. The feel is very old school hipstamatic: they have a big refrigeration room with a wooden door and big iron latches, they strictly use an electric oven and a crock pot to prepare their goods -- I mean the place just makes you want to bask in its perpetual cozyness watching away as eggs come out of the oven and pastries are carefully handcrafted, clockwork. But onto the food. These guys have a sandwich menu accompanied by eclectic dessert and soup daily specials (we're talking key lime pies and posole here) and a comprehensive coffee menu. The ingredients are freshly sourced from CSAs (as far as I've been told) and the beans come straight from the majestic Jones roastery. I've paid at least a dozen visits to this place and, in my experience, there are some things they make very well. My go to sandwiches are the sunrise BLT (that candied bacon and baked eggs...) and the grilled pastrami (all the meat and coleslaw). What I don't like about the other sandwiches is that they're cold and don't taste as good--and frankly for $8 a sandwich, well, you can't afford to go wrong. I'm a big fan of roast beef, but their [cold] roast beef sandwich (despite the arugula-horseradish-red onion marmalade heavenly medley) just doesn't hit that YUM-spot in the tummy. Something about sliced bread being cold hinders the flavor / texture potential. That said, the ingredients are fresh and clean, the iced lattes are A-list, and the vibe hooks you. Really disappointed. I forgot to bring my lunch so I went here to get a sandwich and it was literally the biggest waste of money I've spent on lunch in a long time. I could've made this at home.
