Apparently my original review stepped on a few toes. Between being accused of putting small businesses "out of business," and being told flat up multiple times "You're wrong" about Giovanni's, not to mention the insults(!) I decided to try again under the reasoning that if any place has such a rabid following, it was either an off night, or I missed something major. Unfortunately, three visits later, at various times and dates, lunch and dinner, I solidly stand by my original review. The service continues to be really good. The decor is really nice and homely. The atmosphere is very family friendly and you feel like you're eating at someone's house. The food just is not keeping up though. Dish after dish lacks any type of flavor. Pasta tends towards over cooked. Sauces are runny and override any other flavor in the dish. The garlic bread doesn't taste like garlic. The pizza is mediocre at best, and the cheese tastes "rubbery" instead of like cheese. To anyone who's going to hurl insults my way over this review, please at least be creative. Using profanity does not a good insult make. Say something like "Your momma must have slapped all taste outta ya' mouth," or "Some one should serve you festering roadkill in the hopes that you have a lingering and painful death that bankrupts your entire family for ten generations due to medical bills." To the owners of Giovanni's, you already have all the other ingredients in a great restaurant, but you should look into getting a qualified cook to come out and identify your problems. You have some solid recipes that with a little work can become very good. Invest in better quality ingredients, IE, stop buying from Sysco. Use real garlic, and better quality bread for your garlic and garlic cheese breads. Spend a few dollars more and get a better quality cheese. Fix whatever part of your processes that leave pasta overcooked and sauces runny. read more

I don't know about you, but I get nostalgic for the pizza parlors of my youth. The kind where all the kids are in the arcade playing Ms. Pac Man until the adults call you over because the pizza is ready. (Shakey's, where did you go?) Well, this place honestly takes me back to those days. I've been here a couple of times now because it is a childhood favorite of my BF's. We've even driven from Seattle & back in the same day to eat here (and go to Powell's, of course~). But the most important thing to note is that this is NOT a fancy place. It isn't even modern or particularly authentic. Giovanni's is just plain good. Start with the house salad, which comes with mushrooms, onions, olives and tomatoes. It is drenched with dressing but it is so light and tasty that it doesn't matter. In fact, order up some of the cheesy garlic bread to sop up the extra dressing and be proud you aren't wasteful. ;) It doesn't hurt to wash the appetizers down with the local beer on tap, either. As for the main event, I'd suggest skipping the entrees and heading right for the pizza. They say the default crust is "thick" but it's not deep-dish thick. After the first piece, I tend to skip the crusts and stick to the gooey bits. Traditionalists will enjoy the pepperoni (order it extra crispy, trust me!), but the Giovanni's special is pretty great, too. And after you finish dinner, stuffed to the gills and strolling slowly to the parking lot, the smell of pizza baking that wafts out the back of the building is so good you'll want to go back and start all over again. read more

I like it and we've added Giovanni's to our regular repertoire of Beaverton eateries we frequent. *Confession* I'm mostly writing this to remember what I do and don't like here for when we stop in again. So, they serve Coke which is always a plus in my book. (I actually just elevated my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars after typing that.) The servers have always been great about refills, too. The mozzarella sticks were not great the last time we ordered them. The Sam mentioned they were a little soggy. I don't care for the marinara sauce that came for dipping, but The Sam liked it. Serving sizes are huge! The Sam's Chicken Parmesan was enormous... and that was before the plate of pasta that accompanies it arrived!! I think there were two pieces of chicken under all that delicious melted cheese. And, it heated up well with my leftover lasagna. I got the lasagna because it was the daily special. (I believe it was about a dollar off regular price for dinner.) The Sam was intrigued by the fact that it includes ham. It was good, but I don't think I would get it again. If memory serves, I prefer the baked tortellini. The dinners are a great value because garlic bread and an antipasto platter as well as either soup or salad comes with it. We get salad because the chicken pasta soup has peas (ew!) and the minestrone has beans (as most do.... but, ew!). I think we got pizza once, but can't remember the details about what we liked and didn't like.... so I guess that's what I'll be getting next time! read more

Made a reservation for my moms birthday and when we arrived the hostess greeted us and got us to our pre set table immediately. Our server was awesome! Very knowledgeable of the menu since most of the party had never been here before. Food is scratch made, you can just tell the difference from canned. Handmade mozzarella cheese sticks, perfectly bubbly chicken parmigiana and lasagna. The pizza is better than chain restaurant pizza, literally one piece is a meal as it's mounded with fresh toppings. I've been driving by and seeing people walk in and out all day long from this place. I would leave for work and smell the most amazing aroma....I finally stopped in and get a pizza based on a referral from a colleague. He said it was phenomenal. I'm driving home with the pizza in tow and couldn't help but grab a piece to eat in the car. WTF?! This pizza is not phenomenal. Somewhere between the crust and sauce, just before the toppings is a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING! I Couldn't stop eating this pizza. With each piece, I kept asking myself was it really that good and had to have another to make sure I wasn't crazy. Crazy maybe.....but this pizza is psychotic! I originally wrote a review in the heat of the moment, after getting back home rather angry over my experience at Giovanni's. Since then, someone, maybe someone who works there, wrote me a note on here and said that I was lying to hurt a small business' reputation. In light of this turn of events, I have deleted my original review, and will now offer this new one. While I admit my original review was mired in emotion, this one is going to be as objective as I can be about my experience. My wife and I came here on her suggestion. It had been a long time since she had been here, and I had never been and am always looking for new places to eat, especially if they are locally owned small businesses. I did a quick check here on Yelp, saw the mostly positive reviews, and then noticed that the place has been around for longer than I've been alive, which is usually a really good sign. We parked in the back lot, walked past the kitchen vents and in that moment I was excited, as it certainly smelled good. Walking through the restaurant on the way to our table, it's obvious that the pizza is what everyone comes here for. Every seated table had one, some had more than one. This is obviously the core of their business, and rightfully so, as I hear it's some of the better pizza in Beaverton. But, having had pizza recently, we weren't in the mood for it, and decided to look instead at the entree menu. The first thing to catch both of our eyes was the gnocchi; we're both huge fans of the dish. My wife was set to order that. but to our dismay, we were informed that they are not made in-house, at which point she decided on the Chicken Parmigiana. I went with my usual test-dish for italian restaurants that serve it, the mushroom ravioli. We got our starter of soup and side caesar fairly quickly. The soup had a lot of vegetables in it, and certainly looked good but unfortunately I think it had been sitting a bit too long, as the texture of the vegetables were all off. Everything was a bit too soft. Flavor wise, the broth on it's own was okay but it had a rather minerally taste to it, not quite salty, but a bit more metallic. This permeated the soup as a whole, and it was difficult to taste any other seasonings within, to the point where I wasn't sure if there were many other seasonings. The caesar dressing of the salad was tasty, but there was a lot of water on the plate from the washing of the lettuce, and the croutons were like rock. I also noticed a lot of the lettuce in my salad was toward the stem-end of the plant, which is always bitter and no matter how you wash it will always taste of dirt. My wife's chicken parmigiana was a monstrosity of a dish, a huge portion of beautifully fried and broiled bubbly goodness, with good color on the cheese and no puddle of oil on the plate like you get with some fried dishes. So, it was very difficult for me to comprehend how a dish that looked this good came out of the same kitchen as the mushroom ravioli I ordered for myself. Pasta dishes get a good portion of their flavor by "marrying" the noodle to the sauce, allowing some of the sauce to be absorbed by the pasta itself. What was presented to me, however, was a room-temperature bowl into which the ravioli had been placed, which was then smothered in a giant ladle of the tomato cream sauce. The ravioli (which looked, tasted, and felt like it had been frozen) were barely hot, and all stuck together. The sauce was thick like paste, a clear sign of either too much of an undercooked roux, or over-reduction and rapid cooling, allowing it to congeal. A huge disappointment, made worse in that it took ten minutes for anyone to check on our table, by which time I was so over the experience that I didn't want to get anything else. I just wanted to leave. So, let's look at a few positives here... family friendly atmosphere, generous portions, and from what I could tell, pretty good pizza. I'm sorry, Giovanni's, but to me, these perks aren't enough to justify a return trip when the most memorable single part of my experience was my surprise at the lack of care that goes into some of these dishes. We came a little late and found that we did not have to wait to get seated. The hostess was very friendly. We got drinks and ordered our food. We decided on Pizza, Salad and Breadsticks. We ordered a pocket pizza. Upon arrival to our table it looked beyond delicious and it smelled awesome. We shared this as our entree which was a great idea as the pocket pizza is very large in size. We cut the pocket in half and each took a half. Our first bite was garlicky pizza dough and melted mozzarella. That delicious first bite was quickly followed with a spit out of your mouth bite, as the entire inside of the pocket was cold, refrigerator cold we could see shredded cheese. They took back the meal and re-made it. Promising it wouldn't happen again. They were wrong. It came out again (30 minutes later) just as cold in be middle as before. Yesterday evening i was given some bad news and that kinda bummed me out. Good thing i was headed towards here for dinner anyways and for that hour or so it was good. So this place is american italian cuisine but it is done well. i also love the fact that seating was immediate so i don't have to stand around waiting for a place to plop my ass down. i had the garlic, chicken and mushroom pizza. Make no mistakes they do not go skimpy on the garlic. the chicken they used was flavorful not boring just grilled. I also tried my friend's pasta dish which was delicious also. Extremely mediocre. Came here on a whim and would never return. Everything we had tasted processed, canned or pre-frozen. The soup tasted like they had just opened a can of Progresso chicken noodle, and the meat sauce on the chicken parm and lasagna tasted like Chef Boyardee. The food is very tasty, especially their gnocchi. However we have ordered to go on 3 separate occasions. Each time there has been something wrong. The first time they didn't take down our side orders, so we had to wait while they made our salads. The second time they put the chicken parm on top of the cardboard container holding the pasta, which caused it to sink into the pasta making it unedible. This last time they put the soup into containers while it was so hot that it melted the lids into the soup of all 3 containers. This resulted in the containers falling into each other and burning my legs as it leaked through the paper bag. TLDR: Only go there to eat, do not do take out. read more

Very quaint atmosphere. excellent food and service. Everything is made from scratch, so you have to wait just a bit, but the wait is worth it. GF and I drove by this place a few times and we told ourselves that we give it a shot. I thought it was a disappointment. The staff is great, and the only flaw I saw all night with the waitstaff was them mingling in the corner table with each other. The food was just not that great at all. The GF and I ordered Chicken Parmigiana and the Giovanni's Special pizza. The chicken dish came with salad and a side of spaghetti which I thought was fantastic. Wish I could say the same about the chicken. It's a breaded chicken that is draped in meat sauce and mozzarella cheese. What it really looked like was a TV dinner that came out of the microwave or oven. It was blech. The Giovanni's Special pizza was alright. However I thought the pepperoncini would be mixed in with the toppings of the pizza but instead I got 8-9 whole pepperoncini on top of a bed of olives. I like pepperoncini but to eat them whole wasn't my idea of fun. The pizza size wasn't bad at all but most of the olives slipped off the pizza, sort of unattached to the cheese type of deal. The sasuage looked like piles of "rocks" that rolled off the pizza. Your getting the short end of the stick when you compare the price to the atmopshere of the place. The restaurant has a feel of a regular sandwhich shop as oppose to that of a nice restaurant. It's like eating at a cafe. I rather eat here than Hall Street Grill, don't get me wrong. read more

This is a good old American Italian joint! Yes, it's a joint. It's a family place and low key! Not unlike those Italian eateries on the East Coast, type diner. So, don't expect dressed up Pearl District wares or atmosphere. Food is solid. Plenty of portion with good flavor. Pizza is good. Original is thick, but their crust is quite good (dark outside, light and soft inside). I'd probably order a thinner crust next time to cut back on the carbs. Toppings are good quality, tasty pepperoni, cheese and they don't skimp. Their pasta and baked dishes also shine. Lasagna, Fettuccini alfredo, spaghetti with meat sauce, ravioli and my personal favorites are their chicken parmesan and their gluttonous chicken Giovanni (parmesan chicken, topped with fresh shrooms, smothered in alfredo sauce, topped with cheese and baked. Of course, served with a side of spaghetti or ravioli. I have enough food for 3-4 meals easily! Their garlic bread is simple and great, probably unchanged from the 1970s. It comes with your meal. So if you like bread while you are waiting, you will have to order (and pay) separately for it. The salad is simple greens, fresh, but their homemade blue cheese is very good! Their antipasto platter is a great deal at only $4 for 2 and it comes with plenty of cheese, banana peppers, carrots and meats. A great way to start off your meal. We often take a bottle of wine, as their corkage is a fair/reasonable $10. You won't get fancy Riedel glasses, but you shouldn't expect that for a tenner. Service is usually good. On one occasion they forgot about us and our server was not mentally present, but we've been back and had great service since. read more

Good food, i had spaghetti and ravioli and my husband had seafood fettuccine Alfredo. I order cheese raviolis and got meat but I never send food back. My husband liked the meat raviolis but I didn't care for them which is nothing personal for this restaurant because I don't like meat raviolis in general. This place is the definition of mediocre. Tried their pizza twice. Absolutely nothing memorable or extraordinary about it. The crust is too airy, the red sauce lacks bite, the sausage tasted bland . The biggest let down for me were the meatballs. Not sure what ratio of beef/pork (not even going to assume they add veal) they use, but they use way too much breading, minimal herbs, seasonings, or cheese, and microwaved to an internal chewy consistency. I'm not sure why people say this place is old school Italian, because no Italian in their right mind microwaves their meatballs! I'll also mention their uninspired iceberg lettuce salad with unripe tomatoes and old onions. This place may have been special back in the day, but it's now just cliche. read more

Went on a Wednesday night at 730pm and it seemed busy but we saw several tables that just needed to be cleared and a few of us had to wait for that. Once we were seated we did not have to wait long for our drinks and orders to be taken. The drinks and appetizers arrived in a good time. Our entree took a little bit longer but the salads and bread arrived at good intervals. The place has an old school feeling but the tables are pretty banged up and did not look clean. This simple change could make a big difference. As far as food, we started with some mozerella sticks but they were almost inedible. They looked like frozen fish sticks with a spongy(not crispy) battered outside and did not taste much better than they looked. The spaghetti meat sauce was pretty good but over-seasoned with oregano and the gnocchi with the same sauce was OK. I will not return. read more

Wow this is one of the best Italian restaurant I have been to. The dishes were filled with to the top with what you order. My order was the Seafood Linguine Alfredo, it was so good it filled me up and I wasn't disappointed at all. My family and I absolutely loved the food here. We were talking about not having good cannolis and we saw on the desert menu that they had them so we had to try them out, we were so happy when we tried them. This is our new place to go for Italian food. I am happy to say that this is my new favorite restaurant. read more

I grew up in Beaverton and appreciated Giovanni's for it's rock solid red sauce Italian food. Giovanni's doesn't have an option to purchase gift certificates online but never fear, fortunately the owner, Nick, is more than happy to take requests over the phone. After which, he mails a physical certificate to the recipient. I live out of state so I haven't eaten there in quite a bit myself but my parents are still fans and because of this I really appreciate the ability to send them gift certificates as gifts. I picked up my order, noted the salad was missing, called the young woman on it and was told it would be an extra $4 for the salad. I am probably the MOST grateful foodie for Giovanni's!! Italian food has ALWAYS been my very favorite cuisine, and it is the BEST (and I do mean freaking DELICIOUS) Italian food in the SW Portland metro area!! There's never a question, when I have Italian where I will go. The reason for the 4 stars is because their weekend hours are TERRIBLE! This isn't 1980 anymore and Portland isn't a dinner only type of city! AND, they aren't on Grubhub which I cannot understand for the life of me. It's almost like they don't want to do more business. Giovanni's lack of coming into the current time (while preserving their amazing, classic Italian food) has got to be costing them thousands & thousands of dollars each month. I don't get it! Excellent service! MOST excellent food!! If they could just fix that dinner only on the weekends (and several hours of breaks during the week which, as a former restaurant manager, has NEVER made sense monetarily!), and get some sort of delivery medium. Best Italian American style restaurant in Beaverton. So a few things to know about Giovannis. This place is mostly comfort family food and is known mostly for their pizza. To paraphrase South Park: "If you expect a fine dining experience, you're going to have a bad time. If you expect a long wine list with Chiantis and Sangioveses, you're going to have a bad time. If you are looking for Osso Bucco varieties, Veal, or some prosciutto and Marscapone stuffed ravioli; you are going to have a bad time." If you want good local pizza and it to be good dough, freshly made, and a nice staff. You hit the right place. This place is Italian American, not authentic Italian, keep that in mind. You get a meatball sandwich and they cut their meatballs in half and put them on a HUGE roll. It's not a focaccia style authentic made Italian bread, just meat, marinara, and bread. But it's usually fresh and well made from that. I like it as they are mainly a local affair and have been around for a long time. But they are always consistently a good quality on their pizza and at a price that is not that bad in comparison to say Pizzacato and pretty fast. I usually get a large takeout pizza but this place is great for my wife and two four year olds to come and have them share a pizza and a sandwich too. Just realize this is NOT FINE DINING Italian. So if you expect that and compare it to A Cena, Iorios, or Mango; you are in the wrong place. If you want a local affair that is much better than an Italian American chain like Pastini or Olive Garden; you have come to the right place. read more

We've eaten here several times and have always found it to be a good experience. The place is clean and comfortable and the food is very good. It is strictly Italian fare and not too large a menu and the prices are fair for what they serve. A lot of people like their pizza but I must admit that it is not my type, too thick a crust for me, but that is just my taste everyone who has it seems to like it. Their pasta and sauce choices are fine and thats what we go for. They serve good hearty soups and lots of toasted bread with each meal. The salad is nothing special but we like their pasta. Last night I had the Penne and meat sauce and my wife had the Alfredo, they were both very good. They were very busy and the service was a bit slow but not anything that you would complain about. We will go back whenever we are in the area and want some solid Italian food for lunch or dinner. read more

After hearing about how great this place was and being in the mood for Italian food I took my whole family. What we experienced was a classic 50s ambiance that was charming, but the food left something to be desired. Simply put, this is a pizza place still trying to masquerade as an Italian Restaurant. The lasagna and chicken parmesana tasted like they were right our of a cafeteria. Nice family atmosphere like the feeling you get at a classic burger joint, but the food is not authentic at all. I ate here tonight it was good. I went with the classic spaghetti, meat sauce and meatball. It was good but just good. The sauce wasn't properly salted but maybe they do that to taste? The garlic bread was beautiful but flavorless. I couldn't call it garlic. The portions we more than generous and the service was delightful.
