At Mongolian BBQ you are the creator of your masterpiece. You get to decide on the protein, veggies, whether it not you want noodles. Then decide if you are in a sweet and/or savory mood by adding a combination of sauces that are offered. Last night, I grabbed a bowl, and actually, I grabbed two, because I think I have a pretty good method, lol. Since there weren't trays available, I put it under my main bowl until I got to the sauces. I know, you are supposed to start with meat... but I was thinking... what's the best way to stack this bowl with all these ingredients to get the maximum amount in it? I didn't want to start with the meats because they take up a lot of space being bulky and frozen. I actually decided to start with spinach, so that I could then flatten it down with veggies and noodles, then top it with the thin slices of frozen meat. Since it was not busy, it made it easy to start in the middle and go back to the meats at the beginning. You want to build your bowl as high a you can get it because after it is cooked, it reduces in size. *pro tip! Use your hand to smash your ingredients down as you fill your bowl! For sauces, this is where your extra bowl comes into play. I try to fill that bowl at least ¾ of the way with a combination of house sauce, chili oil, garlic chip sauce, ginger water, kung pao, some cooking wine, and water. Andrew, the grill master, offered to help with the sauces if I needed. *don't be afraid to use water! It doesn't water down your flavor, but helps with the streaming/cooking process! At the end, there was an option to add "Twist BBQ Oil" I had to ask Andrew about this and it adds a subtle smokey bbq flavor. It sounded great, so he added it for me. For all the sauces, I like to stir from the bottom then get my scoop. I gave him my creation. He emptied both my bowls into a circular grill and used very long chopsticks to continuously stir and flip the ingredients over a very high heat. While he cooked, Andrew was explaining how some sauces go better with some meats and what it does during the cooking process... I like that he was explaining that by adding this sauce, it's going to help tenderize, by adding this sauce, it is more savory, or this one is more sweet... very smart chef! *Do not forget to tip your chef!! When I sat down, Korina had brought me water, rice, egg drop soup, and some wonton chips with sweet & sour to dip them in. While I was waiting for my bowl to cool off, I noticed there were sides available to add onto your meals. They are buy one get one free (of the same app). I decided to go with potstickers and GK pan. So for both, I actually got double orders (yay, I get to take some home!). The potstickers have pork and were deep fried. They had a great crunch and came with a savory dipping sauce. The GK Pan was crispy and a little on the plain side for me. The egg flower soup was good and I didn't touch my rice (oops, lol). Now that my bowl had cooled off a little, I grabbed my fork (I didn't feel like chopsticks) and this creation, with the help of Andrew, was my favorite creation of all time! It was savory, with just a tiny hint of sweet. Everything was tender! Korina checked up on me a few times and I'm sure what she mostly heard from me was, "Mmmmmm!" So yummy! I'm sure I could've done without the extra appetizers, and been satisfied with my creation, rice, soup, and wonton chips (they put in a little hidden potsticker for you to try! ), but I had to give a couple of the apps a try! My last review and last time I was here was in 2018. Experience soured me so badly that I have not returned until this past weekend. I was in the area and craving Mongolian BBQ on a Friday for lunch around 1pm. I walk in and wait at the front for a few minutes until a gal comes out and asks if it was here or to go. I said here so she says to just go ahead and start making my bowl. Surprised that they offered lamb and tofu during lunch time as most places only offered that at dinner. The toppings were full but noticed that many of the veggies had been frozen meaning they weren't real fresh. They had a good selection of sauces that weren't watered down. I especially like the lobster sauce. I also liked that they cleaned the grill before starting mine. I go to find a table and every single table was dirty loaded with dishes! The same gal was ringing up a customer and stopped to tell her Can you wait one moment so I can get her a clean table? I also asked for a drink and that took a little bit. I'm watching her be the ONLY person working besides the two guys running the grill! She was also the cashier and busser! My meal was pretty good. I liked the flavors. The egg drop soup was better than most because I ate the whole thing and it's not my favorite. However the white rice leaves little to me desired. It had some weird taste that I could barely swallow. You also got one pot sticker that was okay. They added appetizers or add-ons like shrimp to the menu also. Price for lunch was very good, $14 and $20 for all you can eat dinner. With how expensive eating out is nowadays, this is a good value. I complained about the bathroom last time and it was decently clean and also the warmest room in the whole place. It was a bit chilly in the restaurant. I was overall pleased with my meal. Service was not great but not her fault. She did pretty good being all by herself. I blame the owners for not getting her help! This was never an option for me before but now I will return as I am Always in this area. read more

The surface here isn't too bad. It's very minimal you make your own bowl. The cook cooks it on the stove top and then you sit down and someone brings you the sides. The food is OK there are quite a few different options so you can make endless combinations of bowls. This place is open until midnight. I don't know if you get to eat in until midnight or if they just do to go orders, but that's pretty cool if you're looking for a late night bite this place is pretty dingy and dirty though they are in some need of serious. read more

The food bar was fully stocked and has alot of options compared to other Mongolian restaurants. The line moved quickly, so it didn't take long to make our bowls and get them cooked. Our drinks were already waiting for us at the table when we got there. It did take a little longer to get our rice, soup and appetizers, and other groups that arrived after us got theirs before us. The service was good--friendly and attentive overall, though it did take a little while to get drink refills. Nothing major, just a small wait. This is the place. My absolute favorite spot to eat. My son loves making his own bowl, and when they have all-you-can-eat, my dad is the happiest person in the world. He loves a good value, and this place delivers. It does get messy, but self-serve is just like that. People spill, drop things, and make a mess, and as soon as someone cleans it, another person is right behind them doing the same thing. I know that has given the place a bad rep, but really, it's the crowd, not the restaurant. That said, it would be nice to have a busser always on top of it because cleanliness matters. What keeps me coming back is how comfortable I feel here. I do not have to talk, just nod if I want garlic, and the staff are familiar with Deaf customers. I have even seen a big family come through with Deaf people, which makes it feel even more like home and welcoming. Great food, great atmosphere, and great staff. Five stars every time. read more

You really can't judge a book by its cover. This location does not have the overall star rating that it deserves. I'm giving it a five out of five because of how amazing my experience was. I usually don't go to this location because it's not the closest one to me (I go to the one off Florin) however I was in this area and wanted to check this place out. When my husband and I walked in, we were instantly kindly greeted to go fill up our bowls. The stations were extremely clean and there was somebody making sure that any dropped food was cleaned up immediately. There were so many fresh and delicious options to choose from. There was one cook and he did a phenomenal job. He even checked in to make sure that we had enough sauce and garlic powder. Once we sat down, we had all of the fixings such as soup and wonton chips and potstickers. Our drinks that we ordered were at the table as well. The servers kept checking in to make sure that we had everything we need. I kept taking them up on the offer of refills and some more wonton chips. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could, but only because the restaurant could use a little updating like painting the worn down wood to hide the discoloration to make it a nicer spot for dates, etc. but it was still such a cute and quaint spot to find! I went within the first 2 hours of opening so that may be the difference in my experience from others, but I didn't see any of the cleanliness concerns others had and the buffet bar was well stocked all the way around with clean utensils and a wide variety of quality ingredients. They also have alternative soda options which is GREAT! They have glass bottle coke with actual sugar instead of corn syrup which was a treat and they give you white rice & egg drop soup along with your lunch bowl. if you have allergies make sure you ask them to clean the grill/range before cooking yours or try to be the first customers upon them opening. I'm allergic to wheat so I called ahead to confirm they have white rice rather than noodles and Nellie answered my question very politely. After arriving Nellie continued to provide wonderful service and cleaned up the tables around us promptly after each party left. She was the only waitress and by the time I left there had been 6 other tables including a large family come in. she even checked to see if we would like water after our sodas were gone, so I'd say her service was great. read more

The other reviews finally caught up to my own experience at GK. Typing this as full explicit rap (which I love) is booming over the sound system with a restaurant full of children sit and eat. The manager "Carlos" is enforcing new rules at the service and it's basically a free for all at a place I used to count amongst my favorites. My mom was visiting so we stopped by to get her a lunch to-go order, since Mom loves vegetables and Mongolian BBQ. I had never been to this location before but was surprised to see that they are open 11am-12am. Those are some long hours! I guess if it's a late night and you're craving Mongolian.... As Mom was filling her bowl, I was able to check out the ingredients and setup (since I had picked up food elsewhere and would not be getting anything here). First thing I noticed was how my shoes kept sticking to the floor. It automatically made me look down and see that the flooring was not clean. While sauces will naturally spill, this floor felt very grimy and hardly ever cleaned. Either the workers need to clean deeper and more often, or hire a professional cleaning crew or use carpets. Just not a good sign for customers' first impressions to be dirty floors. My mom was the only customer in the line at that time and yet the sauce area had liquids that were spilled on the counter. At the very least, an employee should see new customers walking in and clean up the mess. I tried looking for napkins or a towel around the restaurant but could not find any. So my mom had to maneuver around the spills to get sauces. The plastic jars that held the sauces looked really old and icky. But maybe most customers aren't that picky about presentation? The meats looked melted/defrosted, which is very concerning for food safety. The soda machine didn't look too clean either, and I was actually thinking to myself that I was glad I wasn't getting any food there, because everything looked a little questionable. However, the two employees we met were super friendly and cheerful. My mom even commented that they seemed happy to be working there, and I agreed. There are certain people who have a little more personality and these two guys had it (one guy was Filipino, one was Hispanic). They were upbeat, helpful and the guy manning the grill didn't hesitate to clean the grill for Mom. The $14.25 + tax lunch price also comes with a fountain drink. When Mom got home, she was impressed with what a big portion she got, and mentioned it was a good price. So overall, Mom seemed happy with her food and experience but as an observer, I would be hesitant to eat there until they do a more thorough job with cleanliness. read more

My boyfriend and I had excellent service. My boyfriend had jalapeños in his food bowl, and I didn't realize it, so the spice transferred to my food as it was also cooked on the same grill. Trust the bad reviews. Super dirty inside, the food tasted so weird. The veggies had tons of old pieces and food was all over the ground near the Mongolian. We got postickers, rice, and soup free with the meal but it was all COLD. Super overpriced and service wasn't great either. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly hostess, and invited to turn the corner, glance at the menu, grab a bowl, and start choosing what you want to enjoy for your meal. Thee dining room is quite spacious, clean and modestly decorated. Patio dining is available just outside the front door, and it's shared with three other restaurants. The small bar, which serves soft drinks, beer and wine is to the rear, and the grill and buffet line-up is to the left. The dining room is very comfortable and inviting. You grab a bowl, and choose your lunch from the buffet, when it comes to service, this is a "sit down" restaurant, as the friendly staff will bring your sides, drinks and appetizers to your table, and when you're finished dining, they'll bring you your check. The "buffet line-up" is in the shape of a large "U," as you start by picking up a bowl. and work your way around clockwise until the last stop, where you give your bowl to the grill chef, and he'll grill your meal. Disposable plastic gloves are provided to make this very sanitary, and all food items are placed in your bowl using tongs or ladles. No "hands on" in this restaurant! If you're not familiar with the way a Mongolian barbecue works, it's basically a "you choose what you want and the grill chef cooks it." You pick up a bowl, and you start with the meat, and you work yourself around, clockwise, adding what you want to your bowl. You can put as much of anything and everything in your bowl, with the only limitation that it must all fit in your bowl. Truly, you get to enjoy your meal YOUR WAY! If you're certain of what you want, you can always take a look around the line to see what's available before placing it in your bowl. As per contemporary health practice, once you put something in your bowl, it stays there. When your bowl is filled, you hand it to the grill chef, and he'll place the contents on the sizzling-hot grill, sizzle it for a couple minutes, and when your food is grilled, he'll scoop it up, place it in another bowl, and then you're ready to enjoy your amazing lunch. I chose pork and lamb for my meat, which were thinly sliced and made for perfect grilling. Mongolian barbecue reminds me of stir frying on a griddle, as all items you choose, including your sauce, are placed on the oiled grill and cooked together, over high heat. It's similar to the way street venders grill carne asada on the streets of Mexico. Besides meat, I went with noodles, copped white onion, chopped cabbage, diced green onions, baby corn along with chow mien noodles for texture and a bit of "crunch." For sauce, I chose Mongolian sweet and sour, and I added sesame oil to the mix. The grill chef asked if I wanted garlic salt, and I replied with a bit YES! The meat was amazing tender, juicy, and made this a robust, filling lunch. The beef and lamb were simply delicious, but the lamb stole the show, as with every bite, I could taste lamb. I ADORE lamb... I think next time, I'll simply go with lamb for my meat. The veggies were amazingly fresh, and cooked perfectly tender, but not mushy, as the corn still had a bit of "snap" to it. The Mongolian sweet and sour sauce held the whole dish together, and made each bit consistently delicious. Naturally, you just can't have Mongolian barbecue without noodles, and the noodles didn't disappoint. Finally, the chow mien added a bit of "crunch" to the meal and added a rich, "nutty" taste. GK Mongolian BBQ serves delicious barbecue! This restaurant is truly among the best Mongolian restaurants that I've enjoyed during the 25 years I've been a Roseville resident. Friends, this is SOLIDLY DELICIOUS barbecue! The meat and vegetables are fresh, and locally-sourced when possible, the sauce is amazing, the grill is very "Mongolian," the staff is friendly, and the food is simply delirious!
