The kids and I stopped here for lunch on our Highway 101 road trip. We were not disappointed, I had the 1/4 pound of brisket, potato salad, and beans, kids had the bacon cheese burger and Smoky Mac. Brisket was done perfectly, I cook brisket on my home smoker and know what it tastes like when you hit it right. The Brisket was done correctly and super yummy. The cheeseburger disappeared so quickly I did not have to ask if he enjoyed it. Smoky Mac, my daughter is some what of a Mac & Cheese connoisseur, her was her review tasted good, she would not order with extra cheese, and the staff would slightly undercook the pasta to give a better bite. Ok, My husband and I are from Oregon. We drove across the country trying BBQ everywhere including Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. By far this is the best we have EVER had! The meat is so tender it just melts in your mouth. The BBQ sauce is to die for. They make all of the sides home made, as well as the desserts. If you like BBQ you are going to love this place! I had their smoked pastrami sandwich which was incredible. She had the brisket and said it was good. The mac & cheese side was killer! Some of the best I've ever had. This place isn't cheap even though it's set up as a blue collar diner type affair. But the portions are massive and the quality of the food is top shelf. You will not leave this place hungry! As an aside, the place is very clean, the staff is VERY attentive. There wasn't much of a crowd when we were there and the do have a lot of seating. We are serious BBQ snobs and really great BBQ is hard to find outside of Texas, Memphis and a few other strongholds. It was cooked fat cap up and was cut too thick so it didn't render down leaving no crust. The food must have been packed in the smoker too tight as I had to look hard to find any smoke ring. There was an 1/8" on one side. Just too well done for my liking. Pull pork had a texture of being blended but tasted decent. Ribs were very good and I'd go back for them. Don't let the unassuming appearance of this mom-n-pop BBQ joint stop you from trying their delectable BBQ meats, and a darn good chef salad even (with bbq steak and chicken!). The smoked Mac-n-cheese was also fantastic. The service is also very genuine, earnest, and kind. The pit boss came out twice to talk to us and apologize for the time (we thought the food was very prompt and had no complaints--he has high standards). Recently I had the opportunity to hire Gold Beach BBQ for a family event in Brookings and I was very impressed - as were the people in attendance. We planned for 75 people and I probably should have only purchased food for 50 - there was SO MUCH LEFT OVER. I worked with John before the event and he suggested a menu that included potato salad, smoked Mac-n-cheese, pulled pork and brisket for small sandwiches on small, Hawaiian buns. I really wanted a fresh fruit salad as well - and he assured me that they would find the freshest fruit available the day of the event. We arranged to have the food delivered in servile containers, with a supply of paper plates, napkins and cutlery. They even went to the $1 store and bought large serving utensils for us. The owner of the company actually delivered everything! It worked out perfectly. He was exactly on time with the food and even offered to help serve the food for the $25/pp cost. But I declined as it wasn't that kind of event. So he left everything - including the large warmers that kept the food hot/warm for up to 2-3 hours!! They trusted me to return the warmers (although they did have my credit card number, LOL). Got great compliments on the food - and John was correct...the smoked Mac-n-cheese was absolutely the highlight! Fruit salad was a nice combo and was a perfect compliment to the savory. Brisket was the favorite meat by far although the pulled pork was good as well. One of my relatives who lives in Brookings "found" Gold Beach BBQ and I'm so glad she did! We paid $32 for 2 hot dogs on stale buns, a handful of fries, fried pickles, 4oz of over-cooked tri-trip, a Diet Pepsi and 2 waters. Original order was chicken strips and fries, but they were out of chicken strips so the girls ordered hot dog and fries. Both stated the bun tasted stale but the fries were very good. I ordered the 1/4 pound (4oz) of tri-tip, medium rare and potato salad. I received a medium well piece of meat. It was tough and chewy. No potato salad and no muffin. There was no salt and pepper on the table, but there was ketchup, mustard and a large squeeze bottle of bbq sauce that was terribly sticky. The service was mediocre at best, and it did not appear as though they were understaffed. We were never asked how our meal was, if there was anything we needed or if we even wanted a refill of our beverage. Both girls' water glasses were empty. They left their hot dogs with only a couple bites taken. Ate about half their fries. We polished off the fried pickles, as they were good, but pretty greasy for the last few. I liked the dill dipping sauce, but the girls' would have preferred ranch, but it was not offered and since nobody checked on us, never asked for. The fried pickles were served in a boat on my plate with the tri-tip. When I removed them from the plate, it left an anemic-looking piece of meat alone on a 9" metal pie tin (their plates). There was no potato salad or corn muffin. Since there was nobody coming around to help us, I didn't get a chance to inquire about the missing items. I had 4 bites of the tri-tip and it was terrible. It was tough and extremely chewy and overcooked. The waitress finally stopped and asked if we were done (we'd each pushed our plates back) and we all said yes. She scooped up the plates, asked if we wanted dessert (no thank you) and walked away. She returned with the check and said she'd be our cashier. 2 HD & fries $14 1 fried pickles $8 1 1/4 pound tri MR $8 1DP $2 No potato salad was written down $32 Would I give them another chance. Wonderful takeout dinner on our last night in Gold Beach. Ribs were flavorful and not dry. BBQ sauce sweet with a little heat. Potato salad is the kind you would take to a church picnic...yummy. THE BEST CLAM CHOWDER I HAVE EVER HAD!! I don't know what they put in it but it was the best clam chowder I have ever tasted. They topped the chowder with this chili oil and it's a game changer. Did not expect this from a BBQ place. Besides the chowder...we order the three meats and two sides plate. All the meats were super tender and delicious! My favorite would have to be their tri-tip. It was cooked to a perfect medium well...tender with a touch of pink in the center. For our sides we got spicy mac and cheese and the chowder. Don't forget the bbq sauce cause that was bomb too. It's a much sweeter sauce but I thought it paired well with the tender, smoky meats. Overall a great surprise to find in Gold Beach. I'm from Oklahoma, we love our BBQ. Being way out here on the coast leaves me a little empty. It was nice to see a carnivore hut open nearby. Having meat that you can eat without sauce is important. These guys do a great job. It's very tender and you can smell it from McCay's. While I was raised to be a mustard based girl, the signature sauce is a nice touch. Today we decided to stop for lunch and man are we glad we did! The really friendly and polite gentleman waiting on us was asked the question every waiter dreads "what do you recommend"? and without hesitation said the brisket. He wasn't kidding. Wife had the brisket plate (1/2 pound) and I had the brisket sandwich. I am not kidding when I say this was some of, if not the best, brisket I have had anywhere. And I have made it a point to try BBQ in a lot of places. I cannot remember eating better. We split a large side of sea salt fries among our group of four and it was plenty. Came here yesterday on my 50th birthday. First great impression was seeing the trailer smoker in the parking lot. Definitely not a bbq place like Lucile's in SoCal. Legit bbq. Was seated by John. The pulled pork melted in our mouth, brisket super tender and great flavor. The tri-tip cooked to perfection. The sides I got was Mac and cheese, along with potato salad. Both were great. You can actually taste the cheese in the Mac n Cheese. For desert I tried the candied bacon cheesecake. Damn that was killer. The owners wife makes it. I was hesitant to try this place since I couldn't find any info on gluten-free items, but I was very pleasantly surprised that they do have GF options. Chili is made in house and is gluten free. I was also told the clam chowder is which I thought was pretty cool! The food was all good. We got the five meat special, and all of it was good. The kids enjoyed their hot dogs, mac n cheese, and mozzarella sticks. Dirty fries were also a hit although I didn't try them personally. Couldn't have asked for better service. They went above and beyond to provide a great experience. The atmosphere was very laid back and relax, and it was just all around a great dining experience. Very open dining room, very friendly and helpful staff and the service is second to none. My girlfriend and myself chose to drive south to get some grub and a 1 and a half hrs in we stumbled here. After briefly browsing the menu the pit boss approached with some suggestions, (I'm certain he sensed we wanted it all). He made his suggestion and we went with it. We chose the 3 meats and two sides. Brisket, tri-tip and baby back ribs mmm mmmm!! Let me tell you these literally fell off the bone as my lady was explaining that they fall off the bone. Thankfully she's fast like a ninja and caught the escaping delicacy. The tri tip was perfectly cooked to order and the brisket was absolutely the most tender I had ever had. This is a must have when you're in Gold Beach. I had the pleasure of enjoying this a few times now and both times everything has been amazing (except for the biscuits). The food may seem a but speedy but it is quality bbq that doesn't skimp on the portions! A three sampler can feed to people easily and the sandwiches are enough to cut into two. My only recommendation is to not serve the biscuits if they're not fresh. They were rubbery. But other than that great place! read more
