The place, um how would I describe.. Guy Fiery would declare this place to be the Diner of Midwest. At least that's what the first impression looked like. The interior alludes back to the diners from the 50s and the staff have the friendliest attitude. It all falls apart when it comes to the food. I ordered the Golden Nugget Skillet. It looked extremely appetizing. The hiccup was it was salty as balls. I mean, it tasted as if you forgot the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon of salt. I have passed this place thousand of times and just kept driving.....I was totally missing out!! I use to go to the Golden Nugget on Clark st and it wasn't that impressive so I thought this one would be the same...I was wrong!! My mother in law took me here to breakfast last week and it was delish and the portions were huge (and I can slam some food). I had the Denver omelet with extra cheddar cheese, with pancakes, a side of bacon and their chunky potatoes. My meal was marvelous!! The omelet wasn't over cooked and the actually gave me extra cheese like I asked for. Those chunky potatoes were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. My bacon wasn't super salty and they were cooked to perfection...They're a little pricey but it's worth it!! The only downside is that their parking lot is a joke and a half. It's super small but there is plenty of street parking. Try them out!! read more

The service here is really bad. You have to sit yourself and wait for a waiter to come to you which was confusing and a long time because one waiter come to my table then a different came along. And the waitress I had was being very disrespectful because she didn't pay attention and brought two extra orders when it was 4 not 6. When I first moved to Chicago, locals told me to avoid Golden Nugget. After living in Logan Square for 5 years, I finally decided to stop in here late one night. To my delight, their breakfast foods are great! I love their waffles and bacon. I've had a salad and a BLT and maybe some other things here too and everything's been A O K. I have a very sensitive tummy and usually diner food makes me sick immediately (got sick within minutes of eating at the IHOP at Diversey/California), but not here! Yes, it is greasy and cheap etc, but it's just right for late nights or when you're just tired of all the yuppie BS at the new places in Logan Square. read more

Totally solid diner/pancake joint. The staff has generally been sweet, quick, and friendly to me and my friends. They often have holiday decorations, which I find completely charming. Dangling striped spiders for Halloween? Sure! I'm kinda looking forward to seeing what their Thanksgiving and Christmas decor looks like. I have only ever eaten breakfast dishes here -- after having been veggie for 12 years, I am still wary of a lot of meat dishes at diners. But, I've had enough different breakfast options at this spot to (at least) make a fair assessment of that portion of the menu! The french toast tastes so egg-and-buttery that it's probably horrible for you, but I thoroughly enjoy it as a staple hangover breakfast, and it really only needs a wee bit o' syrup. The omelets are fluffy, and you can order them with a side of pancakes. Yep, that's right! yYou can opt to get 2 pancakes rather than hash browns, which makes an omelet plate enough for two people to split, easily. I went to the Golden Nugget way back when, back two or three weeks before Valentine's Day. In fact it was my lunch at the Golden Nugget that informed me of the impending arrival of "Nice Dinner Out for Sex Day" through the copious pink doily hearts and cupids and banners strewn throughout. I had a decent burger and fries and diet coke, nothing remarkable but not unreasonably gross, but couldn't help but gape at the Valentine's Deco. If you've only got Golden Nugget for Valentine's Day, maybe stay at home and make spaghetti. Is the food here amazing? No, but if you want amazing food, you agent going to eat here anyways. The food is good, reasonably fast, and pretty cheap. For $13, their "South of the Border" breakfasts can easily feed two people. The ambiance is reminiscent of a failed casino in Reno circa 1981, but I hang out at dive bars, so that sorry of thing doesn't bother me. This past Saturday, before a Target marathon (yeah, shopping, not like the real running marathon that took place the next day...), my husband and I craved omelettes. Seeing as how we're too lazy to run marathons, why would we be any less lazy when it comes to breakfast? So, we went to the Golden Nugget a few blocks from said Target. Our omelettes were fluffy and yummy and chock full of cheese and mushrooms. We split sides because not only are we lazy, but we're indecisive. I got a side of French Toast, which was actually one of the best french toasts I've had in a century and he got a side of whole wheat toast and hash browns. The toast was unexpectedly decent whole-grain bread, but the hashbrowns looked like they needed a little more time in the sun. I was in dire need of pancakes on a Sunday morning, but did not feel like waiting 30 plus minutes for some of the more popular and trendy breakfast joints in my area so I chose Golden Nugget and didn't regret it. There was no waiting even though it was pretty crowded. Took some time to peruse the menu (a place that is open 24 hours will have a lot to choose from). The pancakes are good and huge! This was the place to eat after last night's blizzard at 3am! After pushing cars for 3-4 hours in the snow and finding out that Subway and McDonald's lots were not cleared. We discovered that Golden Nugget's was nice and clean. They only had burgers and sandwiches- not sure why but we had a really tasty Turkey BLT. Service was quick, courteous, and friendly despite only having one server for what seemed like a half filled restaurant and steadily increasing. Overcharged us, for 4 people was $80!!!! We didn't even order any extra drinks just coffee and water. Couldn't even read what was on the receipt. Staff commit billing fraud and just do not care. I went here by myself and ordered a single meal worth $10. While I was eating, the person that took my order ended her shift and left. When I went to pay, the person charge my card for over $30. I tried to explained logically that there was some mistake and I only ordered a single meal. Golden Nugget employee pointed generally in the direction of half the restaurant and ask if I was sitting "over there." After I admitted that I did sit in that section, I was told: "Then that is your bill. The bill is correct." After making three attempts to get the bill corrected, I gave up. While the food was editable, much like cafeteria food at a high school, it was no place close to being $30+ worth of good. I would never go back or recommend this place to anyone. The pricing is high for the value of the food even for the prices on the menu. If you add in the gamble that employees will scam you, it brings this place to being a complete rip off. read more

I used to love coming here. The food and service was good. However, for some reason they have decided to raise their prices dramatically. 2 coffees equal over $6.00 and there is almost nothing under $14 on that menu. For eating there you could go to a sushi restaurant for the price. It's ridiculous and I will never go there again. They also don't let you swap out fries for something else without a big up charge. We found a receipt in our van this morning for Golden Nugget, a funky looking diner we've been avoiding since moving to Chicago. Using the receipt, we've been working backward to try to piece together what exactly transpired last night. It's like Memento over here. The only possible conclusion is that we did indeed patron the Golden Nugget in Logan Square at approximately 1:45am this morning. We'll start with what we know. Last night was New Year's Eve. We received free tickets to State & Madison and Local H at The Bottom Lounge. With Local H headlining, we were at least momentarily sure we were ringing in New Year's 1998. There was an open bar. Free cocktails, wine, champagne, and Schlitz beer -- classy all the way around. And that's the last thing we remember. Austin vaguely recalls trying to convince everyone on our CTA blue line bus, including the driver, to join us for late-night breakfast at Golden Nugget. Apparently there was one taker, a drunk guy at the back of the bus, but we must have lost him during transit because we have no recollection of him actually making it to the restaurant. He's likely still wandering down Western trying to find pancakes. We use the term "restaurant" loosely. It's pretty dank in the Golden Nugget Pancake House. Imagine an IHOP unbeholden to any sort of national standards, or imagine any regular Denny's. The décor is 70s diner, with wood paneling accents, and what seems to be a thin layer of butter covering the entire establishment. It's surely a fire hazard. According to our receipt, someone ordered biscuits and gravy with 2 eggs sunny side up for $6.50. Austin thinks it might have been his order and says of the meal, "I think it was probably pretty good." Hawley ordered a side of hash browns and one pancake for a total of $4.00. We propose rewording the menu to call it an order of butter with a side of pancake. Alex and Carolina split a side of biscuits and gravy and a "Pancake Sandwich" for a total of $10.00. Don't be fooled by the name -- Golden Nugget's "Pancake Sandwich" is terribly misleading (the fine print should read: "some assembly required"). The "sandwich" consisted of a stack of three pancakes, and on a separate plate, 3 eggs cooked to your choosing. Had Alex and Carolina known they were going to be assembling the Pancake Sandwich themselves, they might have ordered something else. Disappointed but resilient as always, Alex scraped the over-easy eggs onto the top of the pancake platter and went to work. At one point during the meal, Alex may have claimed that Golden Nugget's pancakes are the "best pancakes ever in the world." In retrospect, that may have been a bold statement, but we're sure the pancakes were pretty awesome at the time. The service at Golden Nugget is exceptional. With a clientele of mostly drunken college students and prostitutes, the staff manages to treat every customer with attention while keeping Golden Nugget from turning into the hellhole it has every right to be. During a questioning session of our young waitress regarding just "what makes the pancakes so damn good," we learned that she is a single mother working holidays to make some extra money. With a hardworking mom like her, that kid of hers is in good hands. Our one piece of advice to the new mom? Don't ever let her kid grow up to be the kind of person who would willingly eat at Golden Nugget. read more

I'd seen a couple of these places and wanted to try them out and the free $10 was a perfect motivator. The service was good with coffee and water being filled when needed rather then letting cups sit empty when they should be filled, the waitress was also friendly making sure we were doing fine and food was up to par. I ordered up the ground beef steak thing with pancakes. The beef thing was pretty good with a slight taste like it came off a bbq and the pancakes were nice and fluffy. I do have to say that with the great service and good food I will be back. If you are driving here there is parking in the back. It is a bit tight but hey free parking in the city? I have only the tastiest of revues for this place. Their breakfast special is truly working man's midwest price, but ma and pa quality. Here is the skinny, i love the food in Chicago, but from time to time it so high scale and overdone (not to mention over priced) that Chicago forgets that its in the Midwest and not on the east coast.
