It's delicious, close and competitively priced. The place is cute, clean and comfortable. (Whoa, apparently I'm into alliteration tonight) what more can I want? Maybe beer. They don't serve alcohol. But It's not a deal breaker for me. If you live close by, I'd recommend ordering for pick up, or eating in. Both are faster than delivery -- mainly because they have so many orders to deliver. As there's no Thai in the neighborhood higher rated than this place, I decided to take a chance even though some of the reviews are negative. Order was 15 min late but that's fine, especially if the food is good. The food is the worst Thai food I have ever eaten. I ended up throwing out the entire meal. Spring rolls were bland and greasy and the drunken noodles smelled like straight up urine. I have no idea why, I can't think of any spice that would make it smell so strongly like the floor of a men's bathroom, but it did. This was my boyfriend's 1st time having Thai food-- he rated it a 9/10! I grew up eating Thai food and also give it a 9. We both got drunken noodles with chicken, I thought mine was better bc I got spicy he got non spicy. There was a strong smell like some other reviews but I thought it tasted great. BEWARE THIS PLACE GAVE ME FOOD POISONING!! I ordered vegetable drunk noodles and about an hour after I ate the food I had non stop vomiting. This was the only food I had all day so I know it made me sick. I called the restaurant to inform them of possible food contamination. Golden Garbage is more of a sutiable name for this establishment. I have to admit I was excited to see this restaurant open up so near to my apartment. I thought this could be my alternative to Hong Kong Chinese food off of Wyckoff. The first time we ordered would've been the last time for anyone in their right mind. Okay, Cool. No problem. 30 mins later I called again, and they had no answers. They had to call the delivery guy to get a status. At this point I wanted to cancel the order because I didn't want to eat cold food. But I'm a nice person, and I waited some more. 2 Hours go by, and I am cranky and hungry. My wife is beyond annoyed. I made it clear that I didn't want the food and to please refund me my money. To LATE, the food is here. The order was correct but Luke warm. The food was pretty good. Everyone was happy. Horray!!!! So a month later we decided to give it another chance. Why not, maybe they'll get everything right.. Right?!? Errrrrr!!! Wrong. Food didn't take long this time. That was a plus for me.... Golden Thai [***THE VIBE & DECOR. SKIP TO BELOW FOR FOOD***] It's not a big place: only six tables, one for four, one corner for three, three for pairs. The final table for six, unfortunately, has been overrun by online orders, a large vacant deli coffee, plastic bags stacked on top still in their factory setting. A couple delivery orders with take-out menus stapled to them sit neglected, "Thank you for your patronage!" bannered across the front. Every now and again the chef or sous chef comes out, adorned in a black hoodie, skinny jeans, vans and a baseball cap, ponytail protruding out the back. The electronica has since stopped. The waiter probably realized how it bled and crashed into the dining area through the swinging red flap doors that section off the kitchen. A turquoise swan bejeweled with fake diamonds sits next to the register's computer screen. Glasses hang from above the bar, giving them the appearance of hanging fruit bats, wingless, clear, still. A bright almost neon orange lei borders the fixture. Several Buddha's are arranged around the bar. The fatter, "jolly" Chinese version sits on a brass platter at the other side of the bar opposite the swan. A second Buddha, of the Thai variation, sits on its knees, upright with a white lei of flowers and clear rosary type flower buds around its praying hands. A third is laying on her side, her right elbow on the ground propping up her head, her other arm resting on her waist. They all carried the same poised expression, calm, unaffected. The booths are outfitted in matte black leather and the single person chairs with corduroy upholstery, lined with wide brass studs. Above the booth sitting area: Midwestern grandmother's china cabinet meets various kitchen Knick-knacks, miniature versions of cookware, figurines, a Little chef doll. Each hung shelf had a different theme. One was Miami, or at least, tropical US themed. Another Thailand, with a fourth buddha statue, framed with metal flowers and a metal palm leaf in the background and a row of white porcelain bowls. Another arrangement, a miniature side table of mallards. A wooden window shade hung with twin trumpets and a red pot in the center. The chandelier is made of bicycle rims and exposed old-fashioned light bulbs. Another shelf, two red-painted barns, two rows of each with three ducks in a row. The wall my back leaned against: picture frames within picture frames, small checkered squares within larger ornate golden rectangles. There was a metal cage filled with American flag ornaments and hanging miniature metal woks. Some had paintings in their borders, forest landscapes of maybe Aspen or Wisconsin. Golden Thai, in terms of decor, is definitely more eccentric than other take-out, pit-stop Thai restaurants that are a staple in the average, low to mid income New Yorker's pallets. Speaking of taste- the food. [***FOOD PART OF THE REVIEW***] Nothing extraordinary, nothing totally out of line from what you'd normally expect from a run-of-the-mill Thai joint. The lunch special consisted of a rice or noodle entree and a side soup or salad. Any time a deal is offered, it's hard to say no. Normally I'd order the stir-fried basil dish, with chicken, bamboo shoots, onion, but today felt like a side soup and phad thai moment. The tofu soup was bland, flavorless, uninspired. It tasted like the vegetables that swam in the broth. There is a hint of some attempt, perhaps a chicken stock is used but that quickly fades. This surprised me! Their tom yum soup is absolutely delicious- lemongrass, lime leaf, ginger slices. I expected the same approach with the tofu soup. I guess when you pay less, they skimp on the flavor. Or perhaps, all the flavor in the soup was sapped by the phad thai. It was tasty and more so on the sweet side. A lot of sugar was added to the globs of noodles but I've never been known to turn down candy and wolfed it down. There was something peculiar about the dishes color though; it was pink! There was a pile of crushed peanut, a slice of lime ready to be squeezed, a modest portion of bean sprouts, garnished with some carrot strings and green onion. Interesting choice. The portion was huge, enough to eat only half for lunch and the other half for dinner. What did I expect though? This is about as good as it gets for getting table service at a take-out joint, ordering thai food at $8.95. If the noodles are somewhat tangy, savory and sweet, with crushed peanuts, beansprouts and chicken, it's phad thai as far as the average person is concerned. You get what you pay for and no one is willing to spend over $20.00 anyway. For the bridging-of-culture, middle American mallard meets old eastern European grandmother Thai buddha decor and the ring-pop lunch special phad thai, complete with delivery service observation deck, it's a great spot. I am so down for FINALLY having a Thai place nearby. It's really cutely decorated and the staff were lovely. But the place is really new and, I hate to say it, the food was a bit disappointing. I REALLY hope they can pull the food together because I love Thai and this place is really cute. The problems were: I ordered the Crispy Duck Roll. Two of them barely had any duck in them whatsoever. Didn't taste any duck at all, but could see a couple of brown flecks in the filling. The third roll was better. Also ordered the Fish Cakes which had a delicious fragrance but were like chewing on rubber. The Papaya Salad was better, very fresh, my only criticism would be the peanuts. They had no flavor at all - try eating them separately and ask yourself if you would eat that. The Pad Thai was pretty good, not a knockout, but pretty good. I love it when Pad Thai has smoked tofu in it. It reminds of my days in Chiang Mai! I ordered the curry puffs (pastry puff filled with chicken, sweet potato, onion, Thai herbs, sweet & tangy dipping sauce); Thai style wings (Thai style chicken wings with a side of sriracha sauce);vegetarian spring rolls (bean thread, carrot, cabbage, in a crispy spring roll wrapper, plum dipping sauce). A few minutes ago I ordered their duck with fried rice. Horrible, tasteless rice and burnt old duck. The food was so stone cold i had to put it in the microwave and eventually just threw it away along with menu. i should have known when the food was prepared and was waiting for me in much less than 10 minutes. Obviously they just put my food in the microwave themselves before I arrived for my pickup. I would have given it my dog but I love dogs and wouln't be this cruel to him. Just 2 curries that showed up luke warm after checking in with yelp eat24 multiple times and being promised it was "10 minutes away" twice. I'd rather spend more money and use postmates for Sage. The curries were good but my shrimp green curry had exactly 5 pieces of shrimp. For $15, nope. When I called, the guy at the restaurant asked me what he could do to make it better, then went to find the manager, couldn't, and told me "he was sorry." No offer for anything. Cmon guys!
