This was a very solid find. My mom and I came here for Thanksgiving Eve last week; this place had gotten on my radar months ago for its square pies and cocktail prowess, and I noticed it was a pretty short drive from Redding (where we were celebrating Thanksgiving). We'd both scouted it ahead of time and knew exactly where to find it, but I could see a newbie easily missing its subtle basement location, as the restaurant above it (Marygold's) definitely commands more attention from the outside. It's not a huge space but Good Old Days definitely maximizes what it has. I'd guess there are about 10-12 tables in there, not including the seats at the bar, and somehow they also managed to squeeze in a musical act and plenty of kitzchy hipster decor (there's an almost obligatory Golden Girls painting on the wall). I was a LITTLE apprehensive about the musical act, but it was actually pretty tolerable, volume-wise, likely helped by the almost purely acoustic set. And they played a Dolly Parton cover, so how can that be a negative? We were seated at one of the high tops in the bar section (my mother found the seating comfortable, which is saying something), which was pretty close to the music but we could still hear each other with a little effort. I ordered the plain square pie ($20), along with the Adulting 3.0 cocktail ($14), which included several types of berries and vodka. The square pie was very good, and I can see how this place has developed its reputation for same - the crust is crispy without being charred/burned, and the sauce was on the sweeter side and pretty smooth, which is a selling point for me. I would have liked to see a LITTLE more cheese. With these types of pies, there's definitely an expectation that the sauce is going to be the dominant cast member, but it was often more of a 90/10 split instead of what I would have preferred, which was 70/30. The cheese was so minimal I wasn't able to really distinguish it at all from the rest of the pie, which suggests to me a few extra sprinkles of cheese could have gone a long way here. I was a big fan of the cocktail - I don't always agree with hipsters on their musical choices, but they have absolutely mastered mixology. If I see a beard and a plaid shirt behind the bar, I'm going for it. Perfectly blended, and tasted like a deliciously boozy sorbet bar. I had a second one without hesitation. Also a nice touch - the martini glass it was served in was frosted, very similar to what Friendly's does with their sundae dishes. Once we sat down, I thought the service was perfectly fine. The menu warned that ordering the deep dish pies was a 25-minute prep time, but when you have a nice cocktail, the time flies by. Our waitress was very friendly and stopped by pretty regularly to check in - I think they could have used one more person on that particular night, but we didn't encounter anything egregious in that regard. The only real issue we had here was prior to being seated, and I think this could be remedied with a little additional management/training. We didn't make a reservation because I had no idea how long it was going to take to get up to that area after work on Thanksgiving Eve. As a result, there was a wait time. Perfectly understandable. The hostess told us it would be about a 20- to 25-minute wait. Okay, fair. It actually turned out to be 50 to 55 minutes. Obviously you can't accurately predict how long dining parties are going to linger, etc., but as a general rule, absolutely overestimate than underestimate. Beyond that, when we finally decided to just go in at the 50-minute mark and stay until seated (we had been waiting in the parking lot), there was no sense of urgency from the staff in cleaning off the recently vacated tables, and there were several. One waitress decided to roll up some napkins by the front, and another was just looking at some papers by the lectern area. One waiter was slowly/methodically cleaning up tables, but it took another several minutes before the hostess decided to clean up the table we ended up at. I think a lot of that was just lack of awareness, but if you know have customers who have been waiting for close to an hour, get them seated. So hopefully they tighten up in that department. The food/drinks are very, very good. I'll definitely come back but I'd likely hesitate on a busier night like this one. read more

Ok, this isn't the movie Beetlejuice, but really---you need a French Onion Pizza in your life! It's a square pie with mozzarella and gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and parsley. We also tried the La La Land (thin and crispy) with mozzarella, vodka sauce, basil, parmesan and pepperoni. Two total knockouts! Oh, that cheese pull! And check out their "It Got Weird, Part 2" cocktail with pineapple rum, mezcal, lime, grapefruit, banana liqueur and cinnamon. The decor inside is pretty nostalgic and, well...rad. There's a sweet Golden Girls painting on the way to the bathrooms and some cool 70's style wallpaper. I dig it all. If I could live off of their square pies, I would. It is GOD's unique combination of grandma's pie, Detroit pie, and a Sicilian pie in one beautiful rectangular masterpiece. Favorites are the vodka pie and the french onion pie. The vodka sauce is home made (and you can buy it jarred on the way out!) and if it were socially acceptable, I would stick a straw in a vat of it and drink it. Add sausage or pepperoni if you need a bit of protein on it. The french onion is perfectly done - with the melty goodness of mozz and gruyere. The onions are caramelized and packs a nice sweetness in every bite. I was told to add bacon to it, so I shall do it on next visit. Oh yea, my dedication to this pizza? I love that you can get both a thin and crispy pie as well as a deep dish. You can go classic or you can get something more artisan. The cocktails are equally amazing. This is definitely the spot I bring my friends to when they visit newtown! My kiddo absolutely loves the staff, too. He's 2 1/2 and everyone is just so sweet to us when we come in! I met friends last night for pizza & drinks for a belated birthday celebration. Friday night and this place was busy! As busy as they were, we were seated pretty quickly! We chose a table outside. If I were to complain about anything it would be their outdoor seating. Not comfortable at all! Our server quickly greeted us with a chilled bottle of water and menus. I had been to Hood Ol Days a few weeks ago and noticed that the menu was different from last time. Pretty cool. I know from experience that if you want a certain pie from a previous menu, they'll gladly make it if the ingredients are available, so the options can go beyond the paper! The cocktails were fun and creative and beautifully garnished! They have a decent variety of beers and wines. For dinner, we chose Dave's Late Summer Salad and the Burratta Salad - both refreshing and delicious. I'm sorry - we dove in before I could snap photos of them. We chose the square French Onion pie - so good! The onions were perfectly caramelized and the crust was crisp on the bottom and sides, but soft to bit into. Fantastic pie! The thin crust cheese pie was perfect! The sauce was delicious the cheese was just the right amount and the crust was nice and crisp. Was good pizza for this area. I am partial to New Haven Style Pizza, and this is not that, however it is very good. The square pizza (we had vodka add sausage) is a little like a focaccia bread and similar to a deep dish pizza, and my wife loved it (she is not a New Haven Style fan) and I thought it was very good for that style pizza. The thin pie (pepperoni) was very good and much better to us than any other local places. We also had a house salad that we both found to be exceptional with many different ingredients and excellent homemade dressing. read more

I wouldn't classify this pizza as necessarily bad or advise anyone to stay away. I would just say it wasn't my style. The sauce was a little tinny and bitter, and the Detroit style is not my jam. On the opposite end, their thin and crispy is a little too thin and crispy to my liking. On the Dave Portnoy scale, I give it a 6.5 but I really do encourage everyone to give it a shot. This is the spot Newtown has needed!!! Intimate but not stuffy, this place has a very cool vibe. Interior is cozy, and they also have outdoor seating. Definitely more of a small-group/date place than big group/outing place. Drinks are interesting, and the bartenders slingin' them are clearly passionate about what they do. The food is bomb.com, with some delicious pizza topping combinations. Don't miss their hot honey, either! The real draw, though, is whoever is running their Instagram account. It's funny as hell. This place is awesome!! They have square pies and thin crust but we think they do the square pies very well! We asked and any of the speciality pies can be made either way. We were obsessed with the pizza called white lightening which had a ton of flavor, whipped ricotta and it was spicy and cheesy and delicious roasted garlic (tons). It was a white pie. The heat of the moment square pie that we ordered was a red pie and it was also tasty and crunchy but didn't have as much flavor and definitely wasn't as spicy as the white lightening pie. We still enjoyed it though. This place had some nice beer choices and the cocktails were good, I got the adulting and my sister wanted the mocktail because it sounded good but she asked for it to be made into a cocktail. They also just have iced cream sandwiches made with Ferris acres ice cream, ours had chocolate caramel ice cream in the middle and chocolate cookies on the outside. It was pretty small and it really just tasted like a chocolate cookie with choc ice cream. Not really big enough to split. We weren't impressed and would pass next time. What a difference a month makes. Their pizzas are very inconsistent. The first time I tried it (July), I raved about the food and wrote a 5 star review, because their pizza was that good. A month later (August), oh wow, not good at all. I ordered the same thin & crispy round cheese as last time, and this time it was too done. It was so charred that the crust was black on the edges and turned bitter. I tried the vodka square pie this time, and it was so tiny, compared to the French onion square pie I tried last time. I was so disappointed after opening the box to see this teeny tiny square pie. I couldn't even feed 2 people from that pie. Sigh. I'm really hesitant on trying this place again. I honestly don't know how much food to order. Am I going to get a decent sized pizza next time or a pizza for 1 again? Such a let-down. read more

I don't even know how I stumbled across this restaurant, but I'm happy I did! It's in such an unassuming location (the lower level of the Marygold's on Main restaurant) so it could be easy to miss. We did takeout and ordered A Cheese Pizza (thin and crispy crust), the French Onion (thick crust), and garlic knots with vodka sauce. Everything was DELICIOUS! Not your average pizza. Not NY style or wood fired. I don't know exactly what to compare to, but that's what made it so unique and enjoyable. The thick crust was like a deep dish Sicilian style pizza. The crust was just SO good with crispy edges and the toppings went allll the way to the edge. Side note - garlic knots are not particularly prevalent in this part of CT so I was excited to find them on the menu. They were super delicious... especially with that bomb vodka sauce! (Next time I'm highly likely to order a pizza with that sauce...) The restaurant had a funky, cozy vibe inside. Throwback, old school music. Home Alone was playing on a big screen TVs. Old school pizza lamps hung from the ceilings. Very dim lights (fitting for a "cocktail den"). They also had a lovely patio. I'd return for more of that thick crust pizza. read more
