This place has been going down for a while and today is my last time going here. Not only the food quality has been subpar, somehow there was a piece of rock in my supper burrito. The crack from biting the rock so hard that my wife heard it. My tooth hurts now. I then found two more pieces of rocks in the rest of my chile verde burrito after checking it. The kitchen looked like a mess, with trash, pots and pans everywhere. Not going back.

This place gets five stars because it's somewhere I have and will continue to visit time and time again. This has been a staple spot since high school! Yes there are better burritos in SF but this is my favorite in the East Bay. I always get a carne asada super burrito. The super burrito is just a bigger tortilla and they melt cheese on the tortilla. Guacamole and sour cream are extra $$$ and they don't give very much guacamole but it's only $1.50 extra so in this economy they probably give $1.50 worth of guac. They ask if you want tomatoes (pico de gallo) and hot sauce (salsa verde). I have a low spice tolerance (e.g. I think hot Cheetos are spicy and I get extra of the "hot sauce" aka salsa verde. The burrito is very soft since they steam the tortilla to soften it and melt the cheese on it so it's missing a textural element. PRO TIP: bring it home and crisp up the whole burrito on a cast iron pan. Doing this completely elevates the entire burrito.

Ordered chicken, pork, beef, rice & bean super burrito. No beans, no rice and ALL MEAT. Not what I ordered!

This place has been here for Years!!! Dang even before I was in high school. That's a long time! It's a favorite place some of us go to late at night when I was in my 20's, especially. I live in Vegas now, and visited home (the bay) during the holidays, and coming here was definitely nostalgic. Still very good burritos! Dang, writing this review right now makes me want some now, but I'm in Vegas. Lol. Of course, at times it will be hard to find parking, because it's on a busy street, but when at night, there's lots of parking during the week night. Gordo's is definitely the spot though. Not much seating, but most of the time, it's for take out anyways.

We started with the chips and guacamole and some drinks. I had a nice mezcal Paloma, my friend tried the smokey don Carlitos (which is delivered with much dramatic flair), and 2 others has the mango bourbon drink. For dinner I had the delicous fish tacos, others ordered the pooled, spicy tostaditas, nachos, chicken tacos,.... The food was fresh, hot, and delicous. You could taste the attention to detail in the food and the commitment to fresh and flavorful food. This was one of the best Mexican meals I've had in a long time. The ambiance was excellent also. I could tell that they just expanded into the space adjacent to the original restaurant and it was all very beautiful, clean, and elegant. I honestly felt a little scrubby in my workout clothes, but no one at the restaurant made me feel bad about my attire. This was an impromptu restaurant choice, so no one has time to go home and clean up. The service was also excellent. Emmanuel was our server and he was kind and attentive. He helped me choose my plates and even split the bill when I realized that I left my wallet at home and needed to pay with my phone. Highly recommended.

Order at counter - seating options are mainly outside on the patio with just a few tables inside. Chips aren't included in the order unfortunately, but worth it to spend a few bucks on chips and salsa! The burritos here are hefty, try them with the carnitas. Not too oily, crisp edges and tender in the middle... the dream. Their fried fish tacos are FRESHLY fried which is a world of difference - hefty portion. I tend to get their grande tacos, they're a meal in itself. A good way to try their different meats too! Their menudo is something special, worth the price with an ample helping of tripe and fresh veg. Can't go wrong here. Kind workers, great outdoor ambiance especially with summer coming up, and good prices compared to many other berkeley spots.

Plus they have this lovely outdoor patio with tables both in the shade and sun and complimentary green and red salsa. Best of all - they allow dogs!! That factor alone puts this place in my top three or maybe even top two lunch spots in Berkeley, lol. Our doggie soaks up the attention of the dozens of adoring fans.

It was more than enough food but we just couldn't stop eating because of how delicious it was! The sweet corn tamale was like a dessert, but paired with the tang and salt of the sour cream and cotija cheese it became a refreshing sweet and salty bite. It was a traditional corn dough and the texture was insanely soft, unlike most of the dry tamales I have had before. The pache tamale was truly the star. I had no idea what I was ordering, but I'm so glad that I managed to get this item in my order. The masa is made with potatoes instead of corn which gives it a smooth and melt in your mouth texture and a savory, addictive flavor. The pork inside is juicy and tender. Each bite is complete with the tangy pickled onions. The chuchitos were like the traditional Mexican tamales I am used to, with corn masa and stuffed with flavor and juicy chicken. The tamales are doused in a delectable red sauce and topped with cotija, sour cream, and more pickled onions. They were delightful. The garnachas were definitely the other star of this order. I had never had tostadas like them before, with flavorful and juicy chopped meat, salsa, and cotija. They are served with pickled veggies to add spice and tang, but what surprised me the most was the sautéed cabbage placed on top of each garnacha. The cabbage was so flavorful and soft, and despite all of the other sources of flavor it made itself known. The chile relleno plato was unlike what I am used to. Often, the chile rellenos my family eats are poblano peppers stuffed with oaxacan cheese, these were not that at all. In a way, this dish resembled more of a stuffed bell pepper, with a red pepper filled with chopped meat and veggies. I did get a piece of cartilage which made me a little wary when taking a bite but it was so delicious I couldn't help myself. The black beans it came with were flavorful and the dressing of the salad was amazing and reminiscent of a green goddess dressing. The service was amazing. The people were sweet and accommodating. I also really enjoyed the ambience even though I did order pick up. There are murals and bright colors lining all of the walls, giving the place a welcoming and fun vibe. Overall, with the amazing food, sweet faculty, and beautiful setting, it is impossible to go to this place and not feel an immediate lift in mood.
