Hadn't been here for awhile, but went last week for Mom's birthday celebration. She's right, they do have the best steak! I had the filet and she had the ribeye. They were both cooked and seasoned perfectly.The pomegranate seeds are a creative touch too. I was afraid their escargot had changed from a review, but it was as glorious as ever. Their unique take on it with tomatoes instead of the usual garlic and butter is so much more interesting and delicious. They have a very intriguing wine list too, with so many we had never seen before. We selected a bottle from Israel that was perfect with our meal. Didn't eat here but we walked in and got turned away by some 17 year old kid bc apparently they were booked, although there were clearly open tables. He also didnt know the owners last name, which I thought was a bit strange. I would have loved to try the food, but service means so much to us that we most definitely will not chance making the trip from Dallas again based on our initial experience. Had out anniversary dinner here, and it was so wonderful I asked to come back a couple of weeks later for my birthday. Having read all the rave reviews on Yelp I was looking forward to trying Canary by Gorji. Noting that people had commented on the fact that it gets busy at the weekend I had made a reservation. On arrival the restaurant was pretty quiet and remained so throughout the evening, with roughly half the ten tables occupied at any one time. We were politely greeted by a lovely young lady who showed us to our table and then presented us with a complimentary cranberry and champagne aperitif. Both she and the young gentleman serving that night did a great job, being both very professional and attentive. I think it's great that a more upscale restaurant such as Canary offers an opportunity for young people to gain valuable work experience and unlike other posters we had absolutely no complaints about it. Perusing the wine list proved interesting - Gorji offers a very eclectic mix to choose from. We decided to be adventurous, my husband choosing a Greek sauvignon blanc while I opted for an Israeli chardonnay. The sauvignon blanc wasn't bad at all but the chardonnay was pretty basic and I suspect both were wildly marked up at $12 a glass. I played it safe second time around and chose a Napa Valley merlot which was decent. After we had ordered the oft praised bread arrived. I have to say I do not understand why six thin slices of plain, charred bread tasting of cinders would attract such a fan following. The accompanying dish of oil, topped with bits of grated cheese did nothing to enhance the flavor of the bread, as the cheese and oil were pretty tasteless, the result of mixing the two being a mouthful of oily cindery bread as opposed to purely dry. Appetizers arrived promptly. My husband (with more than a little encouragement from me) opted for the lamb brain and bean garbanzo, which turned out to be a small hill of beans and rather dry pasty looking sauce. The pasty lamb brains tasted like very bland lambs liver and sadly, that was the theme for the entire dish: bland. It could have been transformed into something really good with a modicum of effort and imagination. I opted for the quail breast with honey over kale. It was indeed just one small quail breast, floating atop a mountain of raw kale. The kale did absolutely nothing to enhance the presentation or flavors of the dish - but it did fill up the rest of the small plate pretty well which I guess was the real intention of serving it that way. The quail was nicely cooked, a little sweet but not overly so and the three bites it took me to demolish it were pretty tasty. There were three small round unidentifiable discs on the plate also - some sort of bread or pastry I couldn't really tell. What I do know is they were hard and totally tasteless. The arctic char my husband chose as his entree was nicely cooked and the mixture of white wine, broccoli, cauliflower and red pepper it came with was beautifully balanced in flavor and complemented the fish very well. I love lamb and so despite all the rave reviews for the ribeye I just had to try the colorado lamb T-bone. I ordered it medium rare and it arrived perfectly cooked, expertly seasoned and reminding me of the very best of meze style dinners eaten on long ago trips to Greece and Cyprus. Both the tabbouleh and tzatziki worked perfectly as accompaniments and the vegetables had been grilled to perfection. However, as with appetizers, portions were pretty small. Given the prices at Canary I was expecting a little more. I was glad I had ordered a side dish of the gorgonzola gnocchi I had read so much about. I was even more happy about ordering it once I tasted the gnocchi as they were fabulous. Soft pillows of gnocchi with a beautifully rendered gorgonzola cream sauce - not too rich, not too gorgonzolary (what, that's not a word??) but just right. However what I was not so happy about was that there were only 7 fairly small pieces of gnocchi in the side dish - which given the price tag of $7 makes them a dollar apiece. The selection of dessert options were recited to us by our waitress. I was surprised at the selection - chocolate cake, sorbet, ice cream and something else I can't remember. Everything sounded very ordinary and not at all greek or mediterranean. I ordered the chocolate cake which was moist but not very chocolaty and so, so uninteresting. My husband's sorbet was, well, simply put, very ordinary. Where Gorji clearly shines is in the delivery of authentic mediterranean cuisine as demonstrated by the selection of entrees he offers. He also creates a very relaxing ambience, punctuating the excellent service with multiple appearances from the kitchen to whisk away a plate here or deliver a dish there. If Gorji could deliver equally good and equally authentic appetizers and desserts then I think he would be on to a real winner. We will definitely be returning - because I really want to try the ribeye and because we really enjoyed a relaxing evening. read more

Arrived @ this restaurant after a long day of shopping @ 9:45. Graciously welcomed and catered to, even though it was late. Chef Gorgi frequented the tables and made his patrons feel as though they are old friends being entertained in his home. Absolutely outstanding wild-caught salmon and Bonsmara rib-eye! The steak is a mix of an African breed and Texas longhorn, both free-range, grass-fed cattle, making it a healthier option which under Chef Gorgi, became outstandingly tender and flavorful! The chef hand-selects all his extensive wine list. He had numerous salad selections, from which we chose the Greek. Excellent with very creative presentation as are all of his dishes ! GREAT restaurants like this are few and far between. That is why we are very comfortable recommending it! Our journey with Chef Gorji began in 2008 when his Canary Café was the first restaurant we visited upon moving to Dallas. It was also the last restaurant we visited before moving to Ohio in 2013. Over the years we stayed in touch by purchasing Chef's Puttanesca Sauce by the case from his website. Now we live in California and with our last order, we purchased his cookbook. Last evening we made Chef's Lamb T-Bone with Tzatziki and complemented it with his Pink Grapefruit & Goat Cheese Salad. It was nothing short of amazing as the chemistry between the two dishes bore Chef's trademark "Zing." It brought us back to a time of white table clothes, impeccable service detail, superb wine pairing and a Chef who not once forgot to greet us and then rush out of the kitchen as we departed to say "till the next time." The Café is now called Gorji and is one of the top restaurants in Dallas. We wish Chef continued success and highly recommend a visit for your special night out. There are only 10 tables and he staffs each evening accordingly. If people "walk in" and he doesn't feel that he and his staff can provide superior service, he will turn them away. My husband and I had dinner at this lovely little restaurant without any clue how special the experience would be. We were on a business trip in Dallas and picked the restaurant from its online reviews. The chef is amazing and the service was stellar. We loved the bottle of Grenache we chose (of which the chef owns the last remaining 5 cases), and everything we ordered was sumptuously delicious. My wife and I were craving seafood one night and decided to give this place a try. We were welcomed at the door and sat immediately. Since my wife was pregnant, the chef altered his dish to accommodate her dietary restrictions. She had the duck breast and I had the artic char and they were both cooked perfectly, even when the duck had to be cooked medium well. The duck was rich with flavor and savory with every bite. The dish was complimented with turnip puree, which gave it a nice balance. The artic char was prepared medium rare with a light crispy coat. The fish is similar to salmon but more tender. The chef came out to our table several times to check on us and was very polite. We decided to cap our dinner with a delicate cheese dessert, recommended by the waiter. It was a gorgeous blend of sweet and savory. The environment was quite romantic, small and chic, yet very comforting. Just remember to make a reservation because the restaurant does not double seat tables and we saw another couple right after us be turned away for not having a reservation. read more

I really like the food here. It's always fresh, different, unique and consistently good. The only down side to the place at all is that they do not have a full bar- only wine and beer and the restaurant isn't really comfortable- it sort of needs a remodel. It's clean, definitely clean, but the chairs aren't comfortable, the layout feels dated and not supportive of the amazing food that comes out of the kitchen. I will definitely return, as the food should be the most important part of the restaurant. But I seem to find myself not returning as often as I do to Houston's- where it just feels like the dining experience includes food, drinks and ambience that all ties together perfectly. But- Chef Gorgi is really creative and I definitely think his food rivals the best in DFW. read more

A little late in posting this. Took my son and fiancé here for my son's birthday (which was really my excuse to check it out). I've been hearing about Gorji's for some time. This was actually the third time I've tried to get in. I'll just say that we were very impressed with the service and the dinner. All was top notch. My fiancé had the fish special which she loved. My 17 year old son had the wild boar, which he talked about for days. I had the tenderloin which is one of the best I've had....ever. Canary by Gorji is an amazing dining experience. The intimate setting, the personal service by Gorji himself, the exquisite food...all make for romantic getaway spot that is second to none. My wife and I were looking for a place that was not overwhelmed with people and that had a top-notch menu. Max seating in the place is 30 (reservations highly recommended). The atmosphere does not rush you, nor does Gorji. The flavors of each dish blend exceptionally well so that you cannot wait for the next round. We started off with the garlic/feta appetizer...delightful. My wife had the Australian venison and Texas shrimp, which she noted was the best venison she had ever tasted. I kid you not, the beef tenderloin I had literally melted in my mouth. I have never been to a place that the owner was the chef, the waiter, and the Maitre d'. He accomplished all role flawlessly, with a personal touch, and good humor. We thank Gorgi for the experience and will be back. This is our new spot for romantic dinners. read more

Canary serves high quality food with great service. Chef Gorji personally greets each guest, and he even stops by each table to check on his customers. The grilled octopus was the best appetizer. If you love garlic and tender octopus, then you will enjoy this appetizer. Delicious! The wedge salad and the spinach and berries salad are beautifully prepared and light. The salad dressing is light and refreshing. The shrimp with gnocchi is a must try. The gnocchi is cooked to perfection and they look like beautiful freshwater pearls (big pearls) next to the jumbo shrimps. This entree will not leave you feeling overwhelmingly full because it has the right balance of shrimp, gnocchi, and vegetables. If you like beef and don't feel like eating steak, then try the beef tenderloins with pomegranate. The beef tenderloin is tender, flavorful, and addictive. The rice is deliciously seasoned with lightly caramelized onions. The vegetables are grilled to perfection. The food is not covered in sauce like some other restaurants. You can see the food. The colors from the vegetables are visually appealing and enticing. I know red wine pairs best with meat, especially beef, but my friend and I could not resist the taste of the Chardonnay from Turkey. It's $32 a bottle, but it was well worth it. The wine is smooth and clean tasting. The ambience is great for couples, friends, or small groups. The service is wonderful. The decor is beautiful and inviting. The restaurant is a gem in the Village on the Parkway. Try the coffee. It's freshly brewed when you order it, and it's so delicious that you want to add a little or no sugar. read more

Our reservations were scheduled for 7:30 and on arrival we were promptly seated. The decor was somewhat minimal..really more like a bistro than a more formal restaurant. The staff was gracious and made us feel at home. Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. While we didn't order for about 30 minutes, it was after 9 before the main course was served. The escargot which for me is always the measure of a restaurant's quality was served in a pomodoro sauce which was overbearing and did nothing to aid the canned snails which were bland and rubbery. My main course was the "short-bill spearfish" which is a species of marlin.. My waiter told me that it would be light and flaky when compared with swordfish. I found it to be hard and dense while the accompanying poached shrimp was very bland. In short the meal was a disaster. My wife had the trout which was better but still not of the quality to justify a $34 price tag. In short if you dine here, stick to simple and don't take chances assuming the Chef is always going to have a good day. read more

Have not been to this place since it opened and oh what a mistake that was. Let me begin saying all of our meals were outstanding. The dishes were unique well presented and prepared. I had the wild boar with gnocchi, grilled okra and carrots. The freshwater perch sounded fantastic but alas no one ordered at our table, but seeing it from abroad at the other table made my mouth water. I almost asked the folks sitting next to us for a bite. The veal bacon salad was incredible and we worked in a fabulous bottle of Merriman Wines Pinot Noir, a do not miss if you happen upon it btw. Excellent on so many aspects including impeccable service. Owner/chef constantly on watch and even filling up water glasses. The attention to detail on the food and service will make the seemingly sparse décor...oh wait...what did it look like again? This is an updated review for my food only. The grilled catfish with the artichoke salad was one of he best meals I have ever had. I want the recipe for the artichoke salad. My meal was perfection. With that said everyone else at the table ordered the salmon as their entree and everyone was disappointed as the salmon was dry and overcooked. What a shame. On a Saturday night with 4 tables there were only 2 servers doubling as wine sommeliers so there were delays in getting our drinks initially and keeping the glasses filled as we opted for glasses rather than a bottle. The wedge salad was OK per my tablemates and I concur after having a bite, the kale salad was really good, and the eggplant was tasty. I think the addition of one additional server would have improved the service substantially. This restaurant is a hidden gym. I'll be back for the catfish and I'd love to try the lamb tbone. The last time we ate here around 6 months ago everyone's meal to my knowledge was fabulous. read more

Chef Gorji, is a master! First off, the dining room was very intimate, not a lot of seating which I believe gave it that special feel. In addition, I was dinning with one of my favorite peeps who suggested this location when I was visiting Dallas for business. We started off with some bread and oil that was kissed with lemon juicy, this was a recipe that was make in house. My peep order an excellent Israeli wine which paired perfect with the meal. Next we ordered the kale salad which we split and it was delightful, how can you make kale taste so good. Then we moved on to the the main course meat lol Dallas right! Tenderloin and Lamb Chop rib eye with sides wow! They were both tender tender tender perfectly cooked, which is what I believe makes Chef such an expert. One suggestion I would make to those that are don't like your food salty is to request your meat seasoned " lightly salted". We both found the meat to be seasoned a bit heavy on the salt. The sides were good however it was a bit odd to find that one of the sides was okra, not the first or third choice for us in a fine dining experience. I do not often write reviews, but want to share what a unique experience dining at Canary by Gorji can be. Chef Gorji is very involved, welcoming you as you walk in the door, greeting you and telling you the specials, finishing by asking what he can cook for you that evening. And cook, he does. Dishes were exquisite and well executed. The waiter was attentive and well trained, but not intrusive - it definitely felt like you were in a sophisticated dining room. The scallop and gazpacho salad was beautifully prepared, refreshing, and the scallop was perfectly seared. We shared a grapefruit, persian cucumber and red onion salad with hints of feta and a light grapefruit, olive oil dressing. We also started with the lamb tongue crostini (a healthy portion on one large piece of bread). The sardines almost overpowered the lamb tongue but I enjoyed the salty addition, and were balanced by other ingredients in the dish. Chef brought out extra bread so we didn't have to leave any dressing behind, and I'm glad he did. I loved the large fresh bits of cracked black pepper that complemented the citrus and oil. Our mains were indulgent - a wild boar tenderloin and a petite beef filet. Perfectly cooked. My filet was one of the best (tasting and prepared) steaks I've had in Dallas. I had high expectations after reading reviews and Chef Gorji delivered. I also enjoyed the evening's wine selection. Chef Gorji brought a taste of a Lebanese wine. Chef was an incredible host - while Canary may lack a bustling "dining out" atmosphere or bar, you feel that you are eating at his home; you are welcomed, pampered, indulged and it was a welcome respite and calm, romantic evening for me and my husband. On finding out it was our first visit to the restaurant, he gave us a bottle of cava to take home after our meal! I asked about his favorite olive oil and he brought out the bottle to show me, as well as sharing that he did sell his own dipping oil (which we were happy to bring home). He suggested uses (use this on meats or vegetables before searing). While I agree with other reviews I've seen in D Mag / Observer that dessert is not the focus here, I did enjoy my sorbet, it was fresh, tart and had plenty of fruit. If you are a dessert person though, the savory appetizers and mains are worth the sacrifice of a more inventive dessert menu. We will definitely be back. Overall we found our meal to be outstanding. I loved the Mediterranean flavors and the attentive service from the Chef. You don't often in Dallas have a chef spend so much time visiting with you and one that personally cooks each dish. If you walk in with the right expectations (you go there for the FOOD) you will be glad you went to Canary. read more

Found this restaurant some years ago while looking for a cooking class to attend with my boyfriend, an engineer. How cool to find a former engineer who owns a restaurant and offers classes! We were really surprised at the small size and intimate nature of Canary Cafe and thought this was a perfect place for a future romantic dinner when we were not learning how to cook an award-winning filet or some delicate gorgonzola gnocchi. We loved how we were able to sit with other patrons at shared tables - we met a doctor and a former CEO of a telecom giant and many other interesting people. We fell in love with the wines served with our meals and were amazed at the quality of the food we were served after learning how Chef prepares it. We came back on other occasions for romantic dinners - including Valentine's Day. We also came for special occasions, like a visiting cousin or my mother's 75th birthday, etc. He also sometimes does these "pizza parties" where we are able to eat some of his crispy gourmet pizzas paired with interesting wines - usually poured by a representative of one of the spotlight wineries. These pizza/wine tastings are so much fun that we invite friends and family to introduce them to the casual elegance of this hidden jewel in Old Sakowitz Village. Best steak in DFW, I have been to a lot of high end steak places and the ribeye here blows them out of the water. Food is extremely good all around, the service is too formal for the restaurants layout/atmosphere. I don't go here a lot anymore because the service is so damn annoying, would rather go somewhere that has a better service experience. Waiters here fawn all over you, will come over and interrupt your conversation to clear a plate or sweep up breadcrumbs. Seriously back the F off, it is way overdone. This is a neighborhood cafe with great steaks that is trying to be the French Room. Take the white table cloths off the tables, dress it down, and get your waitstaff to be like BJ's and I would come back 2-4 times a month. Service and atmosphere are as important as food is to me, and this place gets 1 star for that and 5 stars for food, but eating here can be borderline uncomfortable because of the service. I have sent several friends and warned them of this problem, and they all agreed, great food, but the waitstaff doesn't understand how to properly serve someone. Tables are also too close together, last time I was here I had made a reservation 3 weeks in advance and got seated next to another couple who I kid you not were 12 inches away, restaurant had 3 tables full counting us. I should have said something or just gotten up and left would have been a better option, try having a conversation when another couple 12 inches away has a conversation. read more

My wife and I went to Canary for the first time last night. Service was excellent. We had a reservation for 8pm. Upon arrival, they were prepared for us and we were seated immediately. The waitstaff were attentive, but not intrusive, polite and informative. My wife had an artichoke salad and I had a veal bacon and greens salad. Both were excellent. For a main course I had a ribeye and my wife had beef anar. Both were very flavorful and perfectly cooked. I think this is among the better steaks I've had in Dallas. It competes well with any of the great steakhouses in the area. The steak stands on its own, but it also came with a wonderful sauce on the side. The garlic mash potatoes were also very, very good. Gorji stopped by our table to be sure everything was good. There was also a good wine selection. We had one of the best cabernets I've ever had. Great service and ambiance and outstanding food made for a wonderful dinning experience. I wish we had tried Canary years ago! It will now be among our favorite restaurants in Dallas. read more

We are in love with Canary. There is nothing like this north of LBJ. I don't know of any other restaurant in Dallas where the Chef personally comes to greet his guests and discuss the menu selections. It has the intimate feel of a high-end French bistro in Burgundy, etc. The dinner choices are always super creative and we've always loved what we ordered. I also love the wine list- it has non-traditional choices that go well with the menu and has a broad selection of interesting by the glass options. For our last visit, we both had the chilled avocado appetizer with house made sausage and a balsamic-puttanesca sauce. Sounds odd but my husband and I agreed... it was so good that we could have stopped right there and been happy with dinner. For an entrée, I ordered the swordfish topped with shrimp and a citrus sauce that went gorgeously with a glass of Bouchard Pouilly Fuisse.
