This place is known for its fried chicken. Yes, the fried chicken was really good, but I want to rave about the deviled eggs. I never thought that I would be excited about deviled eggs, but wow oh wow were these good. We shared them as an appetizer, but I definitely wished I had ordered my own! Everything else, even the soda, was delicious. In addition to the eggs, I ordered two-piece all dark, with seasoned crinkle-cut fries, and a black cherry soda (you know, the kind that usually accompanies Ski fountain soda). The atmosphere is nice, but it probably gets a little loud when the place is full. (It wasn't full and still a bit noisy when we went.) There's a few tables outside as well, and at least one table large enough to fit a group. You order at the counter, find a table, and the food gets brought to you. All their sauces seem to be made in house and are very tasty. But what I don't like is tipping and all they do is bring out your food. Had the grace wrap supreme and it was the best wrap I've ever had. My friends had the fried chicken sandwich and they really enjoyed it too. Cathead biscuit was indeed the size of a cat's head. Dense but not overly so, moist and just begging for the butter and jam to top it off. Fried chicken was juicy and flavored throughout the meat, with a nice crunchy coating that clung well to the bird. Half bird order means you'll be taking half of that home after you've also had shareables and sides. Herb roasted beef was highly flavored with a good savoriness. The herbs gave a deep flavor. However, I would have liked the meat to have been a bit more tender with less gristle. Mashed potatoes were excellent - creamy and more buttery as you worked you way down to the bottom. Collard greens were satisfactory, but I didn't care for inclusion of the larger stems and would have liked a bit more spice and/or vinegar to pep up the flavor some. Cracklin corn bread was huge, very heavy/dense, and very moist/buttery, and had the great cornbread sweetness. Don't know how some other reviewers got dry, bland pieces - must have been on off days. First time here & I'll definitely be back! Deviled eggs had a nice southern spin on them with the pimento cheese. The pea & mushroom fricasse was good...kind of like a very thick soup or gravy consistency with tons of mushrooms, peas, & leaks. I split the chicken & waffles with a friend...the chicken is definitely the highlight here, perfectly cooked; we expected a Belgian waffle but it was a very thin waffle instead. Lastly the 3 of us each ordered a different hand pie so we could try all 3...chocolate was amazing with the cinnamon & chili flavors and tons of brûléed meringue on top. Strawberry rhubarb was a tie with chocolate only bc that is one of my all-time favorites. Lemon rounded them up for me. The chicken farmers must have increased the price a lot too, cause they used to be bigger, even though the prices here went up. No one working there seemed happy. I am not even going to lie to you, Foodies... I love everything Rick and Elisa Lewis have done or been a part of... One of the first things that ever stood out to me is that Rick remembers EVERYONE... (even if he is faking it, you'll never know it)... he comes out of the kitchen and greets you, he does all the things - all the things necessary to make you feel like you're a regular at one of his joints. Hugs, playing with the kids, and remembers where he met you from... All Lewis (and Elisa & family's Quincy Street Bistro) ventures mean a lot to the husband and I because we started dating and spent a lot of time at QSB when Rick was the chef and Elisa was our bartender (often, or her mom)... My husband used to take his late father there and he and Rick used to talk about cooking and pies and baking as if they were old friends and you never know how much those moments mean to you until the person is suddenly and unexpectedly gone... All of that said, you won't ever EVER not feel at home at one of the Lewis' establishments. Truly. Now. We got the mush out of the way. Food. You walk in and its southern diner feel, like you've stepped back (aesthetically) about sixty plus years... The old mattress springs and succulents on a gorgeous navy wall up against shiny maple wainscoting and wood trim... gorgeous. I love that the table markers are note cards indicating all different locations around STL. You have your choice of booth and table - along with lots of potential options for seating large groups. This is a family-friendly establishment (we brought our infant) so there are high chairs available. I ordered the sweet tea brined turkey leg as I had been lusting over it for quite some time... I ordered in pre-pulled from the bone, as opposed to eating it haunch-style and they dusted some seasoning and some green onions to make 'pretty'. Juicy, flavorful, just the right amount of salt... and you know - keto friendly for those of us who don't do carbs... *if you're a ketogenic eater and don't do a lot of carbs, you could totally find a TON of options here that fit into that lifestyle - including several options of unsweetened tea to drink. ;) Their country ham deviled eggs were awesome - a mix of savory salt and creamy and mustard... I genuinely could not get enough of these... I could eat just these... But... let me tell you of one of the most envious moments I have ever had with my husband... The prime rib sandwich was on special this day... and Rick warned that there may only be enough to do 1 or 2 left this particular day as we were doing a much later lunch during a thunderstorm. My husband ordered it and since we always share.... OH. MY. GOD... the prime rib sandwich is one of the top 3? Maybe number 1?.... sandwiches I have ever had - this perfectly cooked prime rib, juicy, coated in a lovely creamy horseradish that even those who cannot handle the spice could easily handle this... with a tiny dash of greens (that is it, that is all a good prime rib sandwich needs, not a bunch of other craziness)... and a 'gooey' soft sandwich bun. Now, I am not sure if I go back I could stay true to my "Try something new so you can blog about it every time you return to an establishment..." rule... I only want that. I recommend ordering online and picking up and eating at home. They do have a full bar if you order there and wait for your food to go. Also some items are small (ie... wings are 3 to an order). We have visited Grace twice recently, mainly for fried chicken. Ms T orders not hot and I order the hot. I really do like this fried chicken. The heat is pleasant, the meat has been juicy and has proper salt. We both order a quarter, dark and it has been very good. For sides we have had mixed experiences. I have had collards both times and they are good. As with many places I eat them, they don't chop them quite enough and you end up dragging big strings of greens out of the serving container, but they have been tender and are cooked with a little smoked meat. They don't sweeten them much (I dislike sweet greens) but they don't use any vinegar (I prefer a splash) but they are salted lightly and I will continue to order them. Most recently I had fried cabbage. I'm not sure why this dish is ever called fried cabbage and that is true everywhere I order it. It is really more sautéed. At Grace, it was almost not cooked at all and was given an Indian flair with chickpeas and a chile sauce that was laced with cumin. It was almost curried cabbage. Mr D tried the creamed hominy and this was not a hit for any of us. The hominy was tasteless, there was no cream. Ms T had some seasonal vegetables which turned out to be mostly leeks and she is not an onion eater. I will continue to go for fried chicken and greens. I will just have to find another side that I like. You certainly don't need to limit yourself to fried chicken. It is just a small part of the menu. Grace is a welcome replacement for the infinitely overrated Sweetie Pie's. While dining at Grace most recently, with the D's, that subject came up and we universally agreed Sweetie Pie's was the worst food we have had in St Louis. First time ordering and will not be coming back. We ordered a meal to go on Saturday afternoon. Ordered at 12:40pm, we came to pick up at 1:30pm. The food wasn't ready until 2:15pm. There was a big spill stain on one of the bags. An entire container of ranch spilled all over my sandwich. They remade it. But I got home and a whole meal was missing. There was no crowd at the restaurant. Also my niece was visibly pregnant, waited 45 minutes and they didn't offer her any bread or anything. They just apologized for the food taking almost 2 hours. My BF and I drove up from south county in our ongoing search for amazing fried chicken in St. Louis. The good: The chicken breast here is phenomenal - it's moist and flavorful throughout and the skin gets just crispy enough. We both got the O.G. because we're pansies when it comes to heat, but it was not bland. Very well peppered to give just a little warmth. Sweet tea is very good but definitely need a lot of ice to cool it down because it was really fresh. The mashed potatoes were an underdog. I LOVE mashed potatoes and can be borderline picky. At first taste, they were a little bland with not a lot happening in the gravy. But as I ate the chicken, the pepper carried over and really let the potatoes shine. Everyone we interacted with was pretty friendly and no one was rude. The less-good: oh my god the cornbread is SO BAD. If I could send feedback to the kitchen, it'd definitely be: "Do it well or use the box of Jiffy." I'm no chef (amateur cook at best, intermediate home baker) but I doctor up Jiffy cornbread that tastes a hundred times better than the dry-as-the-Sahara brick they gave my boyfriend. The sweet potatoes were alright. It really tasted like sweet potato flavored butter with a couple poop-shaped meringue blobs toasted on top. It was very loose and not really what I like in my sweet potatoes. Literally every other cut of the chicken (drum, thigh, and wing) were so lackluster we thought we'd made a mistake driving up 20 minutes to come here. The skin on those pieces was just soft and the meat was unremarkable. Overall we would probably come back with more than an hour to close to make sure we got the best Grace Meat + Three has to offer, but with other choices we haven't tried, it would probably be a while and only if we didn't find something better. The cornbread really brought down the whole experience and the mediocre drum, wings, and thigh means this place gets 3 stars for now. Cute little eatery in a trendy part of town. Prices are are little high & there is a clear misuse of the southern term "meat & three" in my opinion. As a born & raised southerner who has dined at many actual meat & three establishments you shouldn't have to pay a high price for the main dish (the "meat") then extra for sides. Typically a meat a three consists of one price for an entree with your choice of three sides for one money. My meal was $22 with tip for a meat & two sides. A true meat & three experience here would run about $30 for one person with tip, potentially more depending on what you ordered. Cost aside, what I ordered was good & different enough to keep my interest for the first few minutes.I had the turkey & gnocchi dumplings, mashed potatoes, & roasted summer squash with homemade pesto. The turkey & gnocchi was rich enough on its own to warrant not having additional sides, but the potatoes & summer squash were good in their own right also. I finished the dumplings but only half of the sides because the main entree was just too rich so I could finish the rest of the sides. We shared an order of the fried green tomatoes at our table & I will say I like them better than the rest of the meal. They were pickled & the breading was perfect, similar in style to a good catfish breading. Service was minimal due to the style of dining but the interactions with the staff were at the very least awkward as they didn't come across as interested in our questions about the menu or anything else. I've been here many times before, and though it's not quite as good as it was when it first opened, still one of my favorites. I was the second table in line, but a large table was before me, and the guy running the counter wouldn't do smaller tables behind them until they were seated, and a decent number of now empty two tops sat vacant. After 20 minutes and a now overflowing line, he finally talks to me, and mentions the problem with seating them. I made the mistake of saying I'd gladly sit at the bar, as I'm dining alone this evening. He then sends me off to sit at the bar, where the bartender will take my order. Having grown up in the south, I'm a pretty harsh soul food critic, and Grace Meat + Three offers both the classics and some modern twists on southern dishes. I came in for an early dinner and decided on the hot chicken tenders, Mac and cheese, and cornbread. I like that everything is a-la-cart, so I was able to craft my perfect plate. First, the star: the chicken. Though the employees were a little wary of my decision, which frightened me, I think they were hot to my liking and my mouth was burning to a tolerable degree by the end. I think the portion size was just right, because had there been a fourth tender, I wouldn't have made it through. The ranch on the side offers a cool contrast to the spices, and I liked it enough to continue to dip my chicken (not much of a ranch person but I think I needed it). The sides were good. The Mac and cheese was the better of the two I got. It was tasty, cheesy, and had some interesting elements, but it didn't blow my mind, nor was I expecting it to. I was disappointed in the corn bread, as it was a little dry, but it had decent flavor. If it served as a base for a dish, like a southern-style eggs benedict, I would eat it again, but it needs some moisture. The drink I had (the sweet tea cocktail) was strong, but I enjoyed it. The strength made it worth the price, and the tea was definitely southern-style. Service was also pretty good. I think I'd give this place the southerner seal of approval. read more

The food is a little above average, but the service is lousy. Was fairly slow when we were there and there was plenty of workers. A few walked by our table several times asking other how there food was. The only time the came by was to deliver drinks then the food. No refills offered or anything else. You pay here when you order and prompts for a tip. I really hate this "catch 22". I don't feel I should tip before I can rate the service and have to opportunity to tip more than the average 15%. I tipped $4, which was 13% so I guess maybe that's why we got lousy service. So there loss and missed opportunity for extra cash laid on the table. I will not be dinning here or recommending in the near future. Too many better choices in the area. read more

With soda somehow I went to over $18 with tax... IDK. Catfish was well cooked and placed on white bread. Added unnecessary hot sauce & ate the last bites of catfish as a sandwich with bread. Red beets were made more interesting with onion and was a good sized side. Smoked red cabbage was nice surprise flavor with descent crunch even though I assumed it was cooked. The service was good, didn't get a fork for some reason but they were very ready and quick to set our table up.
