This is a very special restaurant visit for me because I lived on this block for 3 years and walked by this diner Every. Single. Day. and never got around to going. So much so that I just turned it into a goal of mine that the day I move out of this apartment is the day I go to this diner as a farewell to the memories. That day arrived and let me tell you this experience was everything I couldve wanted and more. First off, the food here was ABSOLUTE GAS. I allowed myself to go full force and EATTTTT. Started with nachos and mozzarella sticks. Nachos were loaded to the brim and the chips stayed crispy even the ones on bottom. Mozza sticks had amazing cheese pulls. For the main, got the Chorizo Burger with Waffle Fries and a Chocolate Egg Cream to drink. Burger was gargantuan, like you literally cannot eat it with your hands you need fork and knife, seasoned perfectly, toppings were stellar, fries were super crispy. Incredible. First time having an egg cream and it was so interesting. To finish off I had an oreo shake which was the perfect consistency and so delicious. And then right at the end the brought a FREE piece of Baklava WOW. Service here was awesome, never felt rushed, attentive waiters, allowed me to move to the larger booths mid meal just to be more comfortable. And the music here is literally like they took my playlist off my phone. A shame I only visited here on my LAST day on the UES but I WILL be back nevertheless. So happy with this meal. read more

Shame on me for foregoing my usual bagel & wanting something different. My partner and I just left here after I found a ROACH in my food! In all my years, that has neverrr happened to me. Thankfully I usually pay attention to what I'm eating because it was well concealed in the hash browns. When ordering take out, every sandwich topping costs an additional $1-$3. That would maybe be understandable if they actually gave me the additions that I paid for. While we are on the topic of price, why does this place have to be THIS expensive? It's like apples-to-oranges comparing breakfast in one diner to lunch in another. With that said, Gracie Mews may be my new go-to place. The menu offers daily lunch specials, which may be no more than just throwing in a gratis bowl of soup. Because avgolemono wasn't an option, we both chose matzoh ball. Despite the broth an unnatural shade of yellow, it wasn't bad. The matzoh ball was light, maybe a smidge under-cooked, but okay for a diner. My Reuben didn't look like any Reuben I've ever had. It took over the plate with an abundance of cheese, and good corned beef with just the right amount of fat. Laid flat -- an open sandwich -- I cut strips picking each up in my hands to eat. Half of the sandwich came home with me. T ordered a smash burger which was likely made on a flattop. I like my burgers grilled. We shared an order of fries at an additional charge, cooked just as requested, crisp. While you only get a sample-size of coleslaw I thought it better than average. Nice and creamy. We've been having breakfast at a historic neighborhood diner for one reason: they offer free morning coffee and juice Monday through Thursday. I asked if they do the same here, and son-of-a-gun, they do! I'll write an update when we go back for omelets. We stopped in for a late night snack. It was so good that we went back the next day for lunch. We were on the way back from the theatre (Death Becomes Her, a wonderful show!). We were hungry, it was cold outside, and Gracie was between our subway stop and where we were staying. On a whim, I ordered a bowl of their lentil soup. What I got was a LARGE bowl of thick and delicious soup. It was almost stew-like in its consistency and I could have probably finished the bowl with just a fork. Except that I couldn't do that because, as good as it was, there was just too much. For $8, this bowl of soup may be the best food value in the city. I was back the next day, at the crack of noon, for lunch. This time I had their Old School Burger. Similar theme... huge and tasty. The burger was cooked the way I ordered it and was flavorful on its own. The bacon slices were thick and their flavor really came though. The melted cheese and fresh onions rounded everything out to a sandwich that would make Chef Slowick sit up and take notice. read more

One of the best quality diners on the Upper Eastside for a few reasons. Firstly, they have plenty of space and different seating arrangements to put children in high chairs while accompanying folks from all generations. The staff is friendly even on busy weekend days and the food is quite diverse in terms of selection. For example, I ordered a special egg, white frittata omelette with grilled cheese and vegetables, and it was delicious. Plenty of size to keep your belly fall and within a fair price point. Of all the diners, I come here the most for its general "feel" and great location on First Avenue. Get their orange juice as well since they make it all from scratch with an impressive compressor machine. Really nice diner in Manhattan UES! Firstly, decor is nice inside- bright, well-lit and modern. It is huge and plenty of seating, including an outdoor sitting area. Came on a Saturday and it was packed! Have passed by before on other occasions and it seems to always be packed with people waiting. Don't let that deter you. We were told we had to wait 10 min for a party of 2 at peak lunch time of ~12.30pm, and it was only about a 5 minute wait. The hostess was very pleasant and friendly. After we got seated, service was fast. The wait staff definitely move with a sense of urgency- they are running around and trying to do everything as fast as they can- cleaning off tables, getting your orders, getting the orders to you etc. Service was great! Our waitress, Anna, was so lovely. 5 stars for service!! I was super grateful for clearly labeled vegan options- while there were only 2 fully vegan options, it is still wonderful for a diner. Most don't have anything except some sides. I believe some of the vegetarian salads can probably be made vegan. I tried The Zen- a beyond sausage wrap with peppers, vegan cheese & greens. Delicious!! Flavors were on point and this was a delicious vegan wrap I would get again. They also had a portobello burger with vegan cheese & avocado- I will probably try that next time. You can add beyond sausage/ chorizo as a protein to any dish. I would LOVE to see a vegan sweet option such as pancakes/ waffles/ French toast! Or vegan egg option like tofu scramble or Just Egg. Got traditional "diner" coffee- they have almond milk (yay!). I would suggest adding oat milk to the menu, which goes better in coffee in my opinion :) They were swift with refilling coffee without even asking! Prices are what you would expected for UES. For 2 people- 2 entrees (1 of them with extra sides) and 2 coffees, it was ~$42. Overall I had a very pleasant experience at Gracie Mews with the quick & courteous service + vegan options. PESTO CHICKEN PANINI - love a pesto chicken sandwich but unfortunately the pesto flavor was a bit lacking - however the chicken was tender, the panini quite crispy, and the arugula fresh with crispy, potatoey curly fries. The lemonade was pretty refreshing, but again, nothing to write home about. I went for the whole wheat pancakes and they were pretty solid. They also came with a side of fruit that was surprisingly very fresh. I had the worst experience earlier today when the host was really disrespectful and cruel towards an infant. I'm not sure if it's because I observed the group of people dining were Nannies, and we're often treated as a service rather than humans, or why the hostess in green was so aggressive toward an infant in a situation like that. We all sat down for lunch, and after making our orders, the infant was playing with the laminated lunch menu when she approached the table and grabbed it from her hand. There was no warning previous to her acts, and no inquiries were raised. She simply grabbed the menu from her hands in an incredibly unpleasant and forceful manner. Again, I'm not sure if this is the establishment's standard for how it treats a particular group. However, that is never a proper way to treat an innocent child, even if they see us nannies as a service rather than the individuals entrusted with their care. Our money is no different than anybody else's, and we, along with the children we care for, should be treated with dignity rather than humiliated by someone who lacks the emotional capacity to treat everyone equally. read more

Every staff member (there were a lot of them) was cheerful and helpful. The entire place was incredibly clean. The rest rooms were spotless. We love this place and that's why we come here every Tuesday for lunch when we are on the UES. Their menu is extensive and they always have specials. I always get the gracie cobb salad. The portion is large so I have 1/2 of it for lunch and the other half I save for dinner. I've also had their tuna, chicken Cesar wraps and fries. This is my go-to place for an affordable pastrami sandwich on the Upper East Side. I get it on the Hero. They give you a generous portion of pastrami, it has so much flavor. I highly recommend it! Gracie Mews is the prototype for a modern Upper East Side diner. It was recently refurbished and remodeled, so it's sleeker, cleaner, and more trendy than most other diners. At the same time, it boasts the almost hilariously extensive diner menu you might expect (offering omelettes, matzo ball soup, and pastrami sandwiches alongside NY strip steak, moussaka, and fish filet stuffed with crab meat). The breakfast is great. For $17, you'll get a 3-4 ingredient omelette, toast and hash browns, all of which will come out within 10 minutes of ordering. Circling servers steadily refill the diner-strength coffee at least four times an hour. Also, I have to plug the fresh-squeezed orange juice. It tastes like it was plucked from a Florida tree this morning and comes in a surprisingly tall glass. In true diner fashion, Gracie Mews is also an excellent post-bar, pre-bed ritual. It's as lively as any place has the right to be at 3:00 AM. It's a perfect place to regroup and recap the night's adventures over a plate of onion rings before heading home. Admittedly, it's more expensive than a suburban diner, but what do you expect? The convenience is unbeatable and the food quality is certainly above average. Gracie Mews Diner reopened recently after a complete renovation. I love their breakfast and the service is top notch. Everyone that works here is friendly. They have the bar up front and now have a lot more space for booths, plus tables for two by the window. The outside seating is now enclosed to keep you warm in winter. After I showed proof of vaccination the hostess seated me at the table of my choice. In no time the waiter took my order. I had one egg fried well done, bacon crispy, Marble Rye Toast buttered, and naturally Sweet Potato Fries! My order came out in a reasonable amount of time and was exactly as I specified. The prices are reasonable and the portions are plenty. The new decor is beautiful including the ladies room. They have pictures around the restaurant of historic buildings that were in the neighborhood. I need to look at my photos closer and do some research about the locations of the buildings. I'm sure most of them are long gone. It's still a nice touch. I can't say enough good things about Gracie Mews Diner. I'm hoping you make it a point to eat here when you are in the neighborhood. The salads are big enough to be split between two people and they have a large variety of salads to pick from. A great place to take your parents for a casual dinner or brunch place for your large group of friends.
