Gracie's BBQ was our go-to place when we lived in the East Bay. We moved out of the area 2 yrs. ago. Yesterday, I went down to meet friends in Vallejo and decided to order food from Gracie's to bring home. What a huge disappointment. This was the worst-tasting meal I've had in a long time. The beans, beans/rice, links and potato salad were awful. I ordered 2 meals: 1/2 slab of pork ribs, hot link, beans and potato salad; and 1/2 chicken, hot link, beans/rice and potato salad. The hot link was missing from the 1/2 chicken order - maybe he didn't hear me, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. After taking a few bites of the potato salad, beans, beans/rice, we let the garbage disposal take over. Not ever going back again...and that's too bad. They used to have very good food. read more

This is THE spot for barbecue on this side of the bay. I highly recommend the pit master, comes with chicken, pulled pork, ribs, tri-tip, two pieces of corn bread. As a former Texan, I'm constantly on the lookout for a good BBQ restaurant. I used to drive by Gracie's everyday on my way to the ferry building and never knew it was bbq until I was looking for it this morning. Made my order or Brisket and Pulled Pork and a couple hours later, I picked it up. Each dish comes with two sides and just enough bbq sauce to slather your meat selections in. I say just enough, because any less would be a crime - we all know good bbq comes down to the sauce and without enough to taste in every bite, it just wouldn't be bbq anymore. The meats were cooked to perfection: brisket still tender and the pulled pork melts in your mouth. The sauce was sooooo close to perfect that I'm not taking away any stars. If I had any suggestion, it would be that it needs more kick. The sweetness is on point, but the tang/kick isn't all there. Still, this is some great bbq in a part of the country where I had all but given up on it (seriously, we bought a Traeger because we missed it so much). Kathleen and I met here for lunch today. I've had it bookmarked for a while. I found it more easily than I had expected and parked across Virginia. As I was crossing the street to get to the restaurant I noticed they had their own lot which is shared w/ another business. Very convenient, but my parking space was fine for today. I was welcomed by a very nice young woman and took a two top table by the window. Kathleen had eaten here before and had liked everything she had. I was a bit earlier than she was, which gave me time to look over their menu. They make iced tea daily and serve it unsweetened and as Southern sweet tea. A young man approached me to take my order and when I told him I was waiting for a friend he asked if he could bring me anything to drink and I asked for iced tea. It came in a pint sized (I think) Mason jar w/ plenty of ice and a wrapped straw. There is outdoor seating in addition to the indoor, although I didn't see it. I just saw people heading out to it. Over the indoor tables were very cool light fixtures, a trio of different sized Mason jars containing Edison lights. It's a great look. By the time Kathleen joined me I had decided on a lunch portion of St. Louis ribs, which came w/ two sides and a mini loaf of cornbread for $16. Our server was the young woman who had welcomed me. I didn't ask her name. For my sides I chose green beans and cheesy mac. Kathleen chose pulled pork and two sides of coleslaw. Our meals were served on small metal trays lined w/paper. The sides were in cardboardish dishes while the meat and cornbread were on the tray itself. The ribs were moist and delicious. There was a bottle of BBQ sauce on the table but I didn't use it. Both the beans and the cheesy mac were very good. The cornbread was moist. I ate half of it and two of the 4 ribs and all the beans and mac. Kathleen had leftovers, which she took home. I took mine home too and she gave me her cornbread, which I brought to Alan. She also gave me a forkful of her pulled pork, which I will have w/ the ribs for lunch tomorrow. Coming from the East Bay, I was taken aback when the takeout containers were Styrofoam, which is illegal in most cities in our area. I wouldn't have used the straw, but it would have been almost impossible to drink the tea w/o it. Those are my only complaints. There is one gender neutral bathroom through the kitchen, in the back on the left. I would definitely come back, but I would bring my own container for the leftovers. read more

I got home I did not get my brisket, I got 8 pieces of cornbread. I tried to call several times and no one picked up. I was assured that he was aware of the issues and was giving them his personal attention. She urged me to try Gracies again for our 4th of July dinner. Well, we purchased a family dinner consisting of ribs, chicken pulled pork etc. And sides. PRIMARY ISSUE: 1 day later, the refrigerated chicken was slimy and moldy--SCARY. The minor concern is the supposedly mac and cheese was tasteless and simply another pasta dish. I gave one star b/c the ribs and corn bread were OK. Good outdoor facility during Covid. Service was friendly; waitress was very nice. She even accommodated giving our party of 8 separate bills by couples. The food was okay. Did not feel there was anything exceptional. Some of the meat was on the dry side so had to add a lot of BBQ sauce. Some of the side dishes were good and some were mediocre. The ribs were okay a bit on the tough side. The brisket I really think is tri tip has a good smoke ring but no flavor. Pulled pork seems like it's boiled. The green beans had no flavor. Great food! We got the platter that comes with 4 meats and 3 sides, and when we opened the container with the meats there were two street tacos! I think they were pulled pork... they were delicious! Not sure if we accidentally got someone else's box or if it was a little extra treat but it was really good! I liked the Mac n cheese, and the red beans and rice were good too... BBQ is in no short supply here in Vallejo. Being from back East I was skeptical that California could contend with some of the finer joints I've grown accustomed to in the Midwest and the South. But Gracie's comes pretty close to checking all of the boxes when it comes to high end BBQ that leaves you wanting more. First off, it's not exactly cheap. But thankfully you get what you pay for. We ordered the family meal that consisted of a rack of ribs, 6 pieces of chicken, and 4 hot links. It also included 2 pints of sides, and 6 pieces of corn bread. We added in an extra order of baby back ribs, the cheesy Mac and cheese, and the garlic mashed potatoes. Yummy! I'll start with the lows: none of us was really digging the chicken. The pieces were large and a bit dry, but with the sauce they weren't bad at all. The ribs, on the other hand, had a nice glaze and were moist and ample. Very smokey and delicious. Certainly a highlight of the meal. I was pleased that we ordered the additional ribs because we needed them. They did not survive the night. The hot links were hot and tasty, and made a bit more mild and savory by the accompanying bar-b-q sauce. They're cut into pieces that are simple to slide into a fork and dip if you're like me, and hate getting messy hands! As for the sides, we loved the ranch style beans and the Mac and cheese. Both were savory and delicious, with a little bit of heat. The garlic mash, sadly, was a bit cold and bland. But one bad side out of the bunch isn't too bad! Lastly the cornbread was pleasantly moist and tasty, a welcome departure, since I typically find cornbread to be a bit tough to swallow. Overall I absolutely loved everything that we had (except the garlic mash...), and would strongly recommend that anyone looking for a BBQ fix give Gracie's a try. Celebrated my sister's birthday here for dinner and I can't say it was the best BBQ I've ever had; I also can't say it was the worst. I can at least say it fell into the bland category (with the exception of the hot links) but I'll go into that below: ~Food~ Dry and bland. The ribs fell off the bone, which is a good thing.. right? But when I took a bite, the meat was tough and didn't have that woodsy or smokey flavor you get from the tried-and-true method of "low and slow". On the contrary, the hot links were infused with a melody of spices that caused each bite to light my mouth with flavor, so kudos there. As for the sides, I tried the corn bread (good with honey & butter!), potato salad, scalloped potatoes, beans and rice, and cole slaw. No complaints there. All the sides were a nice contrast from the meat. ~Service~ Our waiter was friendly. I came a little late to the dinner, but even after being seated, I wasn't able to get a water cup until maybe 15-20 minutes later because he didn't check up on us until we called him over. ~Atmosphere~ Outdoor seating was nice, especially on a warm spring or summer night. Wood panels surrounding the patio along with custom-made mason jar lamps gave a rustic and comforting look and feel to the restaurant. ~Price~ Prices are about what you'd expect to pay for BBQ. Although I wish the price reflected the quality of the food because I could pay the same amount for more flavor elsewhere. ~OVERALL EXPERIENCE~ Based on other Yelp reviews that talk about the delicious BBQ this place has to offer, maybe it was just a miss for me this time around. I am a customer of Gracie's about three decades, when they were in the trailer on Springs Road. In the last two weeks I have ordered the bacon and blue salad 3 times 2 of those it was sub par; one time I ordered 2 salads both of them had rotten/brown avocados brown and rotten tomatoes. The third time I ordered no avocado and Little are no blue cheese. I am very disappointed in their lack of quality control. Hopefully they will read this review and be inspired to do better. This is a hidden gem located within the mean streets of Vallejo. The interior decor is creative, intimate and rustic. It works well for a BBQ joint. The indoor seating is small and can be perceived as cramped. There is an additional screen room with roll up doors (like you would see from an old automobile repair shop). There is also outdoor seating in the rear of the restaurant. Both are equipped with portable heater towers, for those colder days and nights. The service was great, with multiple waiters catering to you to make your experience a pleasant one. The menu is rich with choices. From elaborate sides to the types of foods you would expect from a BBQ spot. I ordered the Tri-Tip plate with pulled pork and two sides. I added the spicy hot link to my plate as they do not have a "three way platter" offering. My sides were mac n cheese and cole slaw. The meal also came with cornbread and butter. The food tasted great, the tri-tip had a smoked flavor to it. As soon as I finished it, I wanted more. The spicy link was indeed spicy. It tasted great, if you like spicy foods. I do. The pulled pork had a smoked flavor to it. It had been cooked in BBQ sauce, but it wasn't a drippy, soggy mess like some places serve. Instead, there was two squeeze bottles of BBQ sauce that you could add yourself. I personally liked that option. The portions were hearty, enough so, that I ended up taking home enough for lunch the next day. I 100% recommend this place. read more
