I decided to get the French Toast with a side order of eggs.....also ordered the special which was a Chili Omelet. Man oh man they know how to feed hungry people, I swear that food came out within a mere 20 mins or less.  Our server was so nice too!! While visiting Monterey this weekend hubby and I wanted a good home cooked breakfast and we found the perfect spot! Had a very homey feel and we felt welcome from the moment we walked in. Never felt judged as we have been at other places in the past. The food was amazing! You have to try the biscuits and gravy as well as the fried country potatoes! The staff were all VERY friendly and although we could tell it's more of a "locals" spot, we felt right at home! The prices are very fair for the portion sizes, and you'll be leaving stuffed! I had good hopes for this place but I was a little disappointed. The seating was fast which was good. But the service was where it was lacking. I ordered hash-browns, scrambled eggs, ham and toast and pancakes. Everything was great except the pancake. It had no flavor and it was a little burnt. This place has great potential but the service needs to get better. The server was not attentive at all, nor did they check up on my party. The food also took long to arrive. I would definitely give this place another time though sometime in the near future. I just hope my experience is better next time. read more

Understaffed operation, one waitress that has difficulty moving around covering all the tables inside and outside. Bus girl got us coffee but couldn't take our order. The slow waitress started taking orders for a party of eight when there were other tables seated prior. We got up and left, never touched our coffee. Other tables did the same. Came in while on vacation after being disappointed with the hotel restaurant. So glad we found this on yelp. The service was great... The portions are good size and the food was tasty. I also ordered iced tea and the waitress said they brewed it themselves but I'm pretty sure it was the powdered kind and it was not good. Best breakfast burrito I've ever had! I've never said that about anything I've eaten, but this hands down is the best breakfast burrito. I added mushrooms, jalapeños and chorizo and it indescribably fantastic. Not only is the food fabulous (there were 4 in our party and everything was great) but the service and decor match the same amazingness of the food. This place was enthusiastically recommended by a a few local acquaintances, which has led me to seriously question their food opinions. Good parking facilities, the interior is cafeteria-esque and the walls are crammed with owl kitsch. I waited until the food came to make a solid verdict. Basically, it's a yard sale that serves a mediocre breakfast. Save your money. I read reviews boasting the special of BISCUITS & GRAVY, which was bland junk. I also read reviews of large portions (What good is more of something that's not good?) & cheap prices (Breakfast is usu. pretty cheap fare...). My husband had EGGS/HASH BROWNS, which were nothing at all special or worth a repeat visit. We ordered the CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST for our toddler and admittedly it was the best dish, but nothing more than I make at home. read more

Let's start with the good: the decor is absolutely charming, the owl theme suits the Grandma's house vibe perfectly, and it is not overdone. The food too, was good but honestly a little pricey for what you get. I had a typical breakfast, the bacon was perfect exact as I asked for it, the eggs too were good-but the biscuits were very dry and stale, and the potatoes were undercooked. The cleanliness is not great...definitely has that dive feel with food stains on the walls and seating. It could use a deep cleaning. The most off putting thing while here though was the service. 4 of us went in to grab a quick breakfast/lunch before we left town. I had the pastrami on rye, my wife had a salad, child 1 had grilled cheese, child 2 had pb&j with fruit. About 6 hours after we ate, and this was the only thing we ate that morning, I start getting the low grumbling stomach.. Yup. It was not good. About 7 hours, I developed a low grade fever.. Toilet trips every 10 mins for an hour. Sadly, I wasn't alone. Child 2, who had taken his pb&j and fruit on the road, he ate it about an hour layer. He vomited. As it happened, I should have been scared when I found a hair on my fries. I chalked it up to being mine. Unclean place. Bug traps under the tables. Gross!! read more

We stopped in here on our way home from meeting with our caterer because i was craving some breakfast type food and didn't really want to go to say, a Denny's or Carrows. Nique ordered the Grandma's scramble, which was sausage, ham, onions, bell peppers, ground beef, and mushrooms with scrambled eggs, nothing special about it at all. I ordered a western omelet, ham, onions, bell peps, and cheese, again nothing special. The place itself is pretty charming...or creepy depending how you look at it, there is a definite owl theme going on there. You have to see it to know what i'm talking about, words wouldn't really do it justice. Service was friendly and the food came out relatively quickly. We did have one issue, Nique ordered orange juice, and the first glass that they brought out was sour...not quite sure why, either they had some spoiled OJ or it was fresh squeezed and it just wasn't sweet, but it wasn't any good. We told them about it and they had no problem switching it out. So yeah, it's a cute little place to stop for a bite to eat, but don't expect to be wow'd. read more

Went here with my girlfriend. Figured we would try something new. Since it is close to my house. A lot of old people were there. It was kinda cool tho. It felt like a grandmother's kitchen. Saw they had calamari and eggs.(I get Calamari steak and eggs at another restaurant all of the time, so i wanted to compare) Both me and my girlfriend told the waitress for scrambled eggs. They came back fried... i liked it, but the fact, the waitress confirmed scrambled when i told her makes me think the cooks dont know how to make scrambled eggs. The Calamari was in deep fried strips tho. but still good. The waitress only came by 1 time to refill our cups. Seemed too busy talking to the other people. So then we waited about 10-15 min for our check after we were done with our food. Finally got the check after people who got there after us was served and was handed their check too. Everything we ate was delicious: Breakfast Burrito with sausage and extra cripsy hash brown (must ask for extra cripsy, they brown it perfectly) and eggs any style. The chicken fried steak was also delicious. The gravy was a little too thick for my taste and they didn't cook the flour all the way out, but if you are hungry you won't care. We also ordered the Big Scrambler which was a special and the portion was huge! All the portions were huge! They also make fresh biscuits. It is very dense rather than light and fluffy but since they are fresh you ignore the flavor a little bit. You also get a choice of country fried potatoes or has browns, which my bf ordered the fried potatoes and he said he'd rather eat my hash browns. The coffee was watered down. Just stick to water... It's healthier for you and better for you in the long run. Other than that, I LOVE OWLS, so I was glad to see the owner loved owls as well. Maybe a bit too much but some of the pieces were very creative. Very nice service and they they tried to accommodate my party of 6 as much as possible since all the tables were taken. Grandma's Kitchen isn't fancy, and the waitress isn't very friendly, but the food is solid and it's a great way to fill up for a reasonable price before you hit downtown Monterey. Get the home fries. They're a little salty, but they're red-skin potato, onion, pepper and fresh parsley goodness. I've been here plenty over the years, but this visit's Spanish omelette was excellent. Packed with mild green chilis and fat slices of avocado, with just enough jack cheese. All topped with a mild Spanish sauce to give it some extra kick. Try it if you like homestyle food at fair prices, and appreciate a little kitsch. (One word: Owls.) read more

I am visiting from Southern California and our local friend suggested this place. I ordered the roast beef and jack cheese grilled sandwich. It comes with tomato and they were happy to add Ortega chiles. They gave me (homemade) ranch dressing as dipping sauce for my fries and had my ever beloved Tapatio Sauce for the asking (I swirl some into my ranch-try it, it's delicious!). I found out our waitress, Gina, does the same. The roast beef was very tender, no fat and not chewy at all! It was about the best sandwich I'd ever eaten, no kidding.....and I eat out often. Juan was the cook and I understand Gina's brother also works here and is a great cook. My friends were equally pleased with their grilled cheese and patty melts. The first thing I noticed about this place when I walked in was how dingy it was. I wouldn't go so far as to say "dirty", but it could use a good overall cleaning. The decor looks late 60's, early 70's. I'm guessing that was the intent. Having grown up on the Monterey Peninsula, I have passed this restaurant many times. I seem to remember it being closed (or gone) for a while and then reopening in the same location. After all these years of driving by I decided to stop today. When we arrived there was one lone customer who had already been served. We ordered and were served in a timely manner. The food was meh...I order scrambled eggs with the home fries and toast. My mom order one buttermilk pancake. She had tea, I had coffee.The coffee was good, the scrambled eggs were bland and boring (no seasoning of any kind...not even salt or pepper) . The home fries were uninspired. Red potatoes with salt and pepper and a little parsley. The potatoes had the texture they get when they are old. The toast was served stone cold. My mom's pancake was also on the cooler side and kind of rubbery. She did not like it at all, but ate it because she was so hungry! She was unimpressed with what was supposed to be green tea. The entire meal came to $14.23. Seems a lot for one pancake, two scrambled eggs, potatoes, toast, coffee and tea. I guess I should have checked the price on the pancake. Mom was in a hurry to go so I tried to get the server's attention, but was unable to. She was at the counter, but staring off in the other direction. I proceeded to get my mom's walker set up, so that she could get up. The waitress watched me do all of this without acknowledging me. I still had to ask for the check and we were practically out the door. So I would say the service was not the most efficient. She never came back to the table to see how we were doing. At the very end of the meal I was finally asked if I wanted more coffee. All in all the experience was not really pleasant and I will not return there. read more
