Passing through the area and decided to order via Instacart from a place called Grama's Tamales. We ordered three different burritos and three tamales. I've eaten at thousands of Mexican restaurants over the years, and this place is easily at the top of the list. The burritos were excellent, but the tamales were on another level. After spending a good amount of money on food , went and asked the cashier for a refill on my wife's soda , and she proceeded to charge me $1.40 on my soft drink , there isnt a sign that says they charge for refills if I had known they dont offer refills I should have just bought a can soda or bottled soda , upon recieving our food my daughters chicken taco had a bone in it shows how carefully they inspect their food , I also ordered an asada plate they gave me taco meat , I was expecting a piece or two of steak not taco meat , very disappointed with the service provided by the staff. read more

Went here for about 2-3x before we ordered diff dishes. This time we ordered special #1 and chips with salsa. The special has 3 dishes on it with beans and rice. The cheese tamales was not that hot and a little hard. The beef taco was ok. The chili verde sope was good! Service was fast and price was reasonable. I would be back here and try the other dishes except tamales. Being a tamales fan i feel like the tamales here seem a little commercialized. Nonetheless, this is still one of the good restaurants for Mexican food in town. read more

My brother enjoys tamales around the holidays and we are not going to see him for Christmas. This restaurant was open on Thanksgiving until 4. I got a dozen tamales- jalapeño cheese, pork, and chicken. I didn't have to call in advance I was able to walk in and order the tamales at the register! My brother is a big guy and had a midnight snack after Thanksgiving. He reported the perfect amount of meat to masa ratio. You can see a woman in the front making homemade tortillas in the front. The tamales have gotten soggy over the years. I don't like the fact that they can't bring your food to the table when you order a lot. Also, the portions on the menudo* are very small for almost $20 a bowl. And no refills on your drinks the place looks nice on the inside though. There's only one restroom for each gender so when it gets busy you must get in the line just to wash your hands. read more

For 6 years I went to Grandma's Tamales for tamales & Menudo. At that time the food was GREAT. Now they have gone downhill. They must have fired the people that were conscientious. Today's tamales are overly expensive & quality control has gone down the tubes. Little beef or pork in the tamales (red flag). The pork had too much fat. The tripe in the menudo was not adequately cleaned with far too much fat on the slices. That results in less healthy mushy menudo. Never going back! Will go on a journey of finding a Mexican restaurant that CARES about what they sell! I may be forced to back to making my Mexican food at home. read more

Hand made tacos are always good, tamales are great, my favorite are the pineapple tamales and champurrado during winter.

We tried three tamales: chicken , pork, cheese Each was full of flavor and filling. These are not small little bites. One can easily fill you up if you're accompanying it with some beans and rice (perfectly fine). The restaurant provided a generous bag of cilantro and onions if you ask which adds a nice cool bite to the food (you probably already knew that if you're the slightest bit familiar with anything else on the menu like burritos and taquitos). The food was picked up about 20 minutes away but tasted very fresh. Those who have dared to make tamales at home know the task is anything but trivial. It's not a short order meal by any means so tasting quality hours after they've been made means someone definitely knows what they're doing in the kitchen. The red sauce is wonderful. Each small cup packs tons of heat and smokey flavor. I've never been to the other location so I can't comment on how this food compares to that one. It doesn't feel like the holidays without a tamale but these are good enough for any day of the year read more

This Grandma's Tamales is the more updated, more sterile, less charming version of Grandma's on East California Avenue. The positve aspect is closing at 9pm instead of closer to 4pm at E. California. Walk up to the counter. Look up at the menu board and order. Food comes out pretty fast especially for slow precookedfoods like stewed Guisados, Frijoles, Arroz. All they have to do is scoop it out.  1)  Chile Verde Plate:  The Salsa de Chile Verde seems meaty, chicken broth based along with thickening purée of acidic, citrusy sour Tomatillo, that originally looks like a green tomato surrounded by a thin papery leaf, piquant Jalapeño, onion, garlic, maybe some black pepper & cilantro.  Slow braised in the Chile Verde, the shredded pork has almost the same consistency as North Carolinian Pulled Pork BBQ. This shredding allows the pork to absorb all the rich, satisfying Chile Verde flavours.   1a) The Frijoles de Pinto is earthy tasting, dark reddish brown possibly due to addition of a bit of tomato sauce and thickened from cooking in its own juices.  Scattering of Totopos/fried Tortilla chips to scoop up some of the smooth, pasty Frijoles.  1b) Arroz is tinged with tomato sauce, friable, dry. Standard, nothing out of the ordinary.  1c) Tortillas Hechas por Mano: At the East California Avenue, two ladies are out in front. One forms a hand full of the Masa/corn dough into a ball, and places it in a wooden press to form a flat round Tortilla. The second lady puts the corn Tortilla on the grill to toast it.  These Tortillas are very thin & light colored so it's either made from very white corn or the corn is mixed with wheat flour for a stretchier texture which is my guess.  2) Chile Relleno: Classic treatment using "sweet" Pasilla chile stuffed with mildly stretchy, white cheese. It is dipped in egg beatened w/ flour that when fried creates an eggy, soft, puffy coating.  The Pasilla chile is still a bit tough so frying a little longer would have softened it more. Salsa de Chile Colorado has a mild chile heat as well as tomatoey Umami countered by a touch of bitterness from the Pasilla. The bland eggy coating absorbs this flavourful sauce.  Darn good, and it's accompanied by Frijoles de Pinto & Arroz.  3)  Tamales:  a) Tamal de Puerco con Salsa de Chile Colorado: Fragrant corn Masa, that may be enhanced with Umami filled chicken stock, is firm yet slightly cushy, smooth surfaced. Chew & it becomes creamy with a underlying richness from possibly lard fattiness.  The thickened Salsa de Chile Colorado has long lasting piquancy & red chile mini pieces. Garlicky, "smokey" from maybe oregano, thyme, Epazote. Tomato based gastrique. Carnitas-like, chunks of meaty, moist, pork loin.   This Tamal de Puerco is not for "hot", piquant chile wussies.  b) Tamal de Pollo con Salsa Verde: Same tasty Salsa Verde as the Puerco de Salsa Verde which infuses into the chopped, shredded, pleasantly mushy, white meat chicken. Not particularly piquant.   c. Tamal de Queso y Jalapeño: Standard, possibly white Oaxaca, Asadero-style cheese & slices of green Jalapeño chiles.  Excellent, almost home style Tamales. I imagine there would be a line during the winter holidays.  Cool place to eat Mexican food that doesn't seem to be "gringoized"   I prefer eating at the E. California Avenue branch sInce it feels as though I've been teleported to México.  4- stars read more

I came solely for the tamales & wanted to like them so bad! Made the 30 minute drive since Reddit said they were the best in town. On the positive side, they were very hefty and filled to the max! The green salsa was so fresh & full of flavor also. But what I couldn't get over was how thick and dry the masa was....so disappointing and ruined it for me. My husband went behind my back several times to eat at Grandma's Tamales without me. Some might find that shady, some might find that he was holding back on a secret, whatever the case was, I dont forgive him for going without me hahah. I was finally able to try the tamales here a few times now and it was yummy. I was impressed with the size of the tamales and was happy they don't skimp on the filling. I've had my fair share of tamales and I'm not a tamale connoisseur, but I know good tamales when I try it. I don't think I've eaten bad pork tamales, but I've eaten good ones and some that were just okay. The ones that Grandma's Tamales make is delicious. They have chunks of pork meat inside and it was very moist. The pork tamales were made with yummy red sauce. I think I judge the tamales by trying the chicken tamale because chicken can come off pretty dry if you don't do it right. After trying the chicken tamale, I am a believer. This place makes good tamales. I would definitely come back and even order a dozen. If my sister doesn't make me any for the holidays then I wouldn't mind getting the ones from here for the holidays. My only complaint is that this place is wayyy on the other side of town from me, so even though I want to visit frequently it's out of my way. I would recommend Grandma's tamales to friends and family because they make good food here. I believe it's a family owned business. Literally THE BESTT chicken and pork tamales in town!!!! Sundays are very busy so go early, but even with a long line it is worth the wait!

The ideal place to stop by before or after you thrift at the local thrift store off Bernard. Can I just say, I am so happy that they decided to capitalize on their grandmother's tamales. It feels like I'm getting the love and support I need through a little piece of savory heaven. I can't really tell you about the other items on thier menu, I ONLY get tamales here. You have a choice of savory or sweet. I personally prefer the savory chicken and pork options, but of you like strawberry and pineapple, have at it. Without a doubt, some of the best food in Bakersfield. The tamales, as one would expect, are top notch. They're like your mom's tamales, but better. We've only tried the pork, but we have no doubts the queso con rajas tamales are also good. The star of the show, for me, is the wet burrito de carnitas with green sauce. It is absolutely delicious and filling. I don't think you can find a better burrito in town. My wife gets the menudo and considers it as good as home made. Trust me, go to Grandma's. I'm going with a 3 star only because I've only eaten their tamales and it was a to go order. I like that they have the masa to meat ratio at almost 100% I think about 1/4 - 1/2 a spoonful more of meat would be dead on point. They spent some time developing their recipe and it shows up in the taste. My boyfriend always asks me what would I do differently to a meal, this time when he asked, I didn't have an answer. One good way to tell if a place is any good is by the crowd, here, people were coming in and out like crazy and they had a decent line to place your food order and we weren't even here that long.
