Looking for an Okay place to dine in the Old Town Kern area of Bakersfield? Los Tucanes Taqueria is a place to try. I tried them for myself recently. It is not a fancy place. Dining area is small, but the staff member would wipe the tables off when there were no customers. I tried a couple of items. Got me an Al Pastor Taco and a Quesabirria Quesedilla. Both items were decent. For the price point, I'd probably return to Los Tucanes Taqueria to try other items off their menu. Business was steady during my time there. I had a PD at the District Office nearby and little time to go elsewhere. I decided to stop and grab something to go. I have been here before a few years back and was unimpressed. Proximity prevailed and I am glad it did. I ordered shrimp tacos and was very happy with the quality of shrimp because a lot of places in Bakersfield use limp, dilapidated shrimp that has an off-putting texture. But the shrimp here were top-quality. Which makes what I have write next that much more difficult. Instead of receiving whole shrimp in my tacos, I found bits and pieces of cut-up shrimp pieces. I know the state of the economy is killing us all but as a customer who paid $20 for this plate of two tacos with a can of soda, I felt somewhat ripped off. I pay less at Chipotle and receive a lot more food that is just as fresh and tasty. My parents used to buy burritos from Los Tucanes when I was younger and these burritos are one of the best in town! The staff are always very nice and the restaurant is always kept clean. If you love burritos you should try their wet burritos, I usually go with the carne asada. read more

Tacos & Burrito were good. If you like meat that's soft and crispy on the outside, this is your place. They don't do extra meat in burritos which I found odd because they won't even do it for an extra charge. Looks like a lot of people come in here to just pick up food and leave as I seen a lot of customers do so. My boyfriend and I got some aguas and they were very sweet. Tried the menudo and it was okay, Whats really good here is the burrito and tacos. If I find myself passing thru Baker st I'll stop by for a burrito. Employee was nice. I love this place! Try their tortas, asada with everything, they are the best in town. The area where they are located isn't the best and the inside definitely needs some TLC, but you should stop by or order take out. You're in for a treat! They don't have bathrooms and homeless linger. I've been going here for over 25 years. It's family owned and I would say 95% of the time their tortas are exactly the same. When it comes to Mexican food, it's hard to be impressed since I had home cooked Mexican meals all my life. But I have to say this place got me. I had the chilaquiles and oh my goodness absolutely delicious! I was not expecting it to be so good! We also had caldo de res and it's super generous with the meat portion. The flavor of the broth was super tasted. And lastly my 2 year old daughter had a burrito bigger than her. The only down side is the beans and rice need a little more flavor but the eggs and the chilaquiles had enough to cover up the fact that they didn't have enough. Noticed they changed a lot of things. Looks cleaner and fresh. The menu looks better and they have added new plates. I would originally just order the basics that I have already eaten like Wet Burritos or Carne Asada fries, both really good options, but I recently decided to try some of their seafood options. Their ceviche is soo good! I'm not the biggest fan of fish but the cashier recommended me a Mojarra Frita, and that was pretty good too. The taco was just avg, the shrimp and relleno was great. Plenty of shrimp, I guessing maybe around 20 or so. rice and beans are good and each meal came with 4 flour tortillas. Most of the people that I work with, are regulars of this place. They eat here at least once a week. That will show you that their food is good. Not extraordinary, but good. This place is quite small so it gets packed during lunch hour. It's literally across the street from where I work so I usually call my order in advance and in 5 minutes, I have my lunch. They serve different items in their menu and they are all very affordable. However, they charge additional .50 cents if you pay them using your CC or DC. I don't really care, because they are a small business and they have to recuperate the bank charges somehow. This place is our usual dive. Super seedy, not incredibly clean or organized, but like the proverbial hidden gem/hole in the wall, the food is amazing, and authentic. Every Thursday my church family always pretends we are going to think about eating somewhere else but we faithfully end up here. The standard order for me would be carne asada tacos and horchata, both of which are very good. They have a larger variety of meats, and if you are adventurous they have lingua (cow tongue tacos). The chile verde is also authentic, and by authentic I mean spicy and tender. Added bonus, if you are a Southern California native, these asada fries are beyond amazing. This joint is usually pretty empty so seating is not usually an option, and if you have a group of under ten, chances are you will not have a problem getting seating most of the time. read more

If you're looking for good taqueria style food, this is the place. The carne asada, al pastor, and chile verde meats are all well done. Prices, portions, and service are better than most other places I would place in this category. They make really great loaded nachos with everything you'd expect and they aren't shy with the meat. The only problem I have with this place is one that's common with "hole in the wall" joints, it is in the "hood". Lots of vagrants in and around the area. It's nice that it has its own lit parking lot, but I wouldn't let my wife go there after dark. Definitely better food and prices than Tacos de Huicho. read more

One of the best places to get real authentic Mexican food. I usually get their torta which never fails to please me. Everytime I go to a Mexican restaurant I like to try their horchata to see how it compares to others and their horchata is one of my favorites. And I absolutely love the fact that they sell jericallas here, which is such a good Mexican dessert.
