Lara & Gar are the dynamic duo behind this epic gem of a location that used to be another iconic restaurant Balboa Cafe we frequented. Their hospitality in the business is known to be stellar. SFSU alumni, so proud to be from the Gator family. Book your reservation on Yelp. Not the only reason I patronize this restaurant. The service, drinks and foods are on point. This review is for take-out. My first time ever in Mill Valley and was visiting friends. I saw that I could order dinner for takeout... $70 of disappointment. Though the staff were very friendly and the speed/ timeliness for my pickup was great, the food was sub par. The fried chicken bucket was supposed to have two pieces of breast, thigh, and drums. I got three drums, three thighs, and a drum-thigh. I didn't expect the batter to have a weird seasoning (reminded me of Shake and Bake) as opposed to a restaurant-quality fried chicken batter recipe. Then sad flavorless, soft slaw (instead of crisp so likely not made fresh) that was missing the jalapeños and salt and some sugar. Mashed potatoes had good texture but tasted sour! Corn bread muffins were a bit undercooked in the middle. The warm chocolate chip cookies were delicious and chock full of chocolate chunks, but that's about it. The Brussels sprouts were burnt and tasted burnt... soaked in soy sauce. The peach cobbler was insanely sugary and tasted like chopped canned peaches baked into extra sugary, pound cake-like bread pudding. $12 for what looked to be like a mush in a bottom of the cup (see photo for the ridiculous portion). It was disappointing to have to throw out more than half of this order. *The indoors and outdoor seating look really cute though. read more

This tavern does dish out some nice comfort food. There is less lighting to give it a more romantic candlelight vibe. I had their housemade edamame hummus and steak frites. Surprisingly got a popover for...dining in? Wow! I'n a sucker for peppercorn so the flavor of the steak clicked with me. I consider it a generous portion. The pita that came with the hummus is not the traditional kind, but welcome nevertheless. I did not stay for dessert or a drink, so this will be on my to-do list for next time! Service was outstanding Food was mediocre, fried halibut sandwich was soooo boring. the fish was nice. But...to much bread on the roll, both too thick and way bigger than the piece of fish. Sauce was basic but tasty tartar sauce. One leaf of lettuce and thin slice of tomato. Could really upgrade this with a crunch slaw, pickled veg or anything more interesting than a single pc of lettuce wilted by the hot fried fish. Calamari was so bland, not seasoned well, dips were yummy. Kids Mac and cheese was "ok" by Lily kids review. Complimentary popovers were a nice idea but execution failed, under seasoned rolls, thick over worked dough and bland herb butter. Made a nice gin martini. Albariño wine was mid at best. Ambiance is nice-ish, slider webs all over the light future in the lobby (where my seat faced) was really gross. Place looks like it needs a good deep clean. read more

Pretty place, more of a lounge type of atmosphere with the blue velvet couch and dark lighting. The interior put me in the mind of the old days of Las Vegas with Sammy David Jr and Frank Sinatra. But it is a combined restaurant and lounge. It's great for an intimate date night. Now, it can be great for brunch with the girls or a family spot if you sit outside. I got the Steak Frites, and the steak could have been more seasoned, but it was tender. Now, I could go back over and over for the onion soup. I had a steak which was cooked perfectly. The sides: a pile of unseasoned, undressed frisée and unseasoned chard, were decidedly lack luster. I opted to have them switch the potatoes on the menu for garlic mashed and they were spectacular. My dining companion ordered the same dish with the assigned potato wedges and the potatoes were drenched in a mayonnaisy sauce. The service was uneven but kind and they gifted us fizzy drinks and a dessert for my birthday. I will try them once more as there were somethings on the menu which sounded good but, right now there is a very strong odor in their parking lot lowering our sense of ambiance substantially. What a surprise to find this gem in Mill Valley! We had a group of seven and had been wandering around the Marin Headlands and wanted a place for dinner before we headed back to Sacramento. It was a Monday night, and we were seated immediately without reservation. The service team was welcoming to this random group of tourists, which I certainly appreciated! I started with a delicious barrel-aged Manhattan, one of my beverages of choice. We had a variety of dishes, but the standouts were the popovers, the French Onion Soup, the salmon bowl (so pretty!), and the fried chicken. But really, everything we ordered was good. I came here after a long hike looking to have a nice meal and with a nice atmosphere and that I got! The ambiance was cozy and resembled what I imagine an elevated tavern to be. Our waiter was extremely kind and the exceptional service made the place feel luxurious. They were dressed nice and spoke to my family and I eloquently, therefore, I would recommend dressing up for this place! The food was amazing and they served us complementary pop overs which were better than any other complimentary bread I've ever been served. I highly recommend going here to enjoy their high quality food for any occasion. Spicy Lobster & Burrata Linguine 5/5 This is one of my favorite linguines I've ever had. The pasta wasn't too overwhelmingly dense and the sauce was flavorful yet light. The peppers added a subtle spice to the meal and complimented the creaminess of the sauce. The buratta was also very creamy and had a great texture. The quality of their lobster is what made me want to rate this a 5. Although it wasn't plentiful (as most other nicer restaurants aren't either), I could tell they care about the quality of their ingredients and want to serve the best pieces to their customers. It's rare that a restaurant hits all the high points at once. Maybe it was helped by a rare warm evening but it was the most delightful dining experience we've had in a long time. The service was attentive and kind throughout the meal. The salads were exciting with lots of good surprises. They brought us gigantic popovers and there was no charge for them. The music was perfect. Kind of a European jazzy mellow playlist. And the delightful owner, Lara, visited each table to make sure all was right. It was just working for us on all levels. We joined friends for dinner here and enjoyed our super friendly server. We were excited to see popovers on the menu, but disappointed that they did not have any jam to serve with it. They said the chef would come up with an alternative for us since it was dinner service. Between all 5 of us (we all ordered popovers) they gave us ONE tiny portion of an apple compote--for all 5 of us? We literally had a tiny tiny portion to try out of that super small portion given to us. Sadly we couldn't put it on all of our popovers. This made me miss The Cliff House popovers so much (RIP Cliff House). We were also sorely disappointed with the fried chicken which we all read raving reviews about. Although a bit juicy the fried chicken literally tasted like it had no seasoning whatsoever. Just really bland fried chicken. We had no salt & pepper on the table either so I hated to ask our server for it since we tried to request jam already for our popovers. I guess that is what the sauces on the side were for? I didn't like any of them. I thought good fried chicken would be seasoned so it would be good enough to eat on its own. Have you ever been to Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco? Booked through Yelp and confirmed yet somehow they didn't have our names at the door. Got seated anyway. Got served complimentary popovers (giant, puffy, and served with soft herbed butter.) I dk if everybody gets these or if they were trying to make it up for the confusion at the door. The motivation for trying them out was, they were part of Mill Valley Restaurant Rally, promoted in Marin Magazine. This downtown MV "rally" featured prix fixe specials at 7 downtown MV restaurants. The menu at this one sounded appealing. But after being seated, we were given regular menus and no mention of price fixe. We had to ask! Then our waiter brought the special menu, which I ordered from. The hubs ordered from the main menu. For $55 I got: Surf and Turf c Maine lobster, steak c bearnaise sauce, grilled asparagus. Delicious! Salad: mesclun, dill, corn, grape tomatoes, lots of purple onion. Pretty but underdressed and too much onion. Dessert: flourless chocolate cake, a very dense brownie-ish square that I couldn't tolerate, aside from the fruit sauce and microscoop of ice cream. The hub: ordered the ceviche appetizer and linguini with lobster and burrata. I found the chips accompanying the ceviche too greasy. He liked both dishes. Ambience: Pleasant, visually dark and pub like but with some tables on an open patio and others in a verandah looking out. Music - maybe 70s? The Brussels Sprouts!!!!! I cannot emphasize how AMAZING they are! This place roasts them with a beautiful black char and the most delicious, sweet and tangy balsamic vinegar sauce your taste buds will ever experience. They are that good. If you come here for only one thing, you'd be a fool not to order the Brussels sprouts - they are hands down the best thing on the menu. We also ordered the French fries, which are triple-fried are were very tasty! They didn't have an overly crisp texture which one might assume from being triple-fried, they had a perfect amount of crisp on the outside with pillowy fluff potato goodness on the inside. The only item we weren't fans of is the tuna tartare, as it had a funky, fish-gone-bad taste and unfortunately we had to send it back. However, the service was impeccable and they were very gracious and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this place just for the mind blowing Brussels sprouts, and also try their local beers crafted at the Beach Chalet Brewery in San Francisco- they are delicious! read more

My family and I came here last weekend on Sunday via reservation for lunch. We were around Muir Woods/Muir Beach and we were looking for a place to eat- we were hungry! I was surprised how empty the restaurant was because it was absolutely beautiful inside. It looked very high class and most of the seating were these large comfy, couches. They had a nice bar with a TV and it looked as if they had just finished breakfast service and we're preparing for the later lunch/early dinner service. We had the whole place to ourselves the majority of the time. We were just admiring the whole place and commenting on how fancy everything looked. They were playing oldies on their stereo and our favorite show was on the TV at the bar. We were in heaven! We were even more indulged with the food that we ordered. We ate everything that was placed in front of us. Granted, the prices were a little steep and we did have a large bill, but it was so worth it! Not only do they not care about their food, they also don't care about their customers. I carefully checked the ingredients in the lobster roll. It didn't include mayonnaise, so I ordered it on doordash. It actually had almost as much mayo as lobster. I called them about it. They didn't answer, so I left a message. They didn't call back. Their website says "elegant and trendy atmosphere" so not sure how we were admitted but this place has been a go-to for us for a number of years since they've opened. We like the outside seating, with heat lamps it's warm even in the chilly months of winter. They also offer a Happy Hour menu from 3-6 every day of the week, which has some good values and an interesting cocktail list. If you're a fan of Manhattans, try the Wanderer (rye, Cynar, Averna, and orange bitters); or if you'd like something smokey, give the Smoke & Honey (scotch, mescal, Lillet Blanc, honey, and lemon juice) a shot. On the Happy Hour menu, the various sliders (cow, fish, and bird) are all delicious. The habanero chicken wings rotate on and off the Happy Hour menu but are delicious (and not as hot as one might expect), as are the ahi tacos. We also like the fried calamari, and the smoked salmon deviled eggs. The Happy Hour menu also offers $2 oysters, which have always been fresh when we've ordered. If they have the hoisin BBQ pork ribs on the menu, by all means, give those a try--they're delicious. More often than not, a floor manager has come around and asked the tables how things are. If they're very busy, the service can be a little slow but service was very attentive and speedy during our visit yesterday afternoon. I'm also not a fan of restaurant surcharges, as one should pay what one sees and it's not transparent how much of these surcharges go to the staff. They add a 6% surcharge to the bill, which seems pretty hefty. With tax and tip, that means you're paying 34% than price on the menu. However, given the food's so good, not going to deduct stars over these points. Keep doing what you're doing, Gravity Tavern. We'll be back! read more

The lavender lemon drop I drank next was much better. Fried chicken sandwiches are all the rage, and Gravity Tavern makes a really good one. Juicy, flavorful, not dry. My family went here for a celebration. Decided to have an early dinner, our reservation was at 5:30. We were one of the first tables seated for dinner. Our waitress was a nice, young girl. Our only disappointment was that she appeared to be responsible for too many tables. As the restaurant got busier, the volume picked up, but thankfully it was manageable. We were still able to carry on our conversations at our table. After we placed our orders, we waited over 45 minutes for the food to arrive. I noticed several tables that were seated after us that received their food before us. When the food did come, it did not come as a table. Two entrees came up and then about 20 minutes later, the other 2 entrees came out. Two members of my party ordered the same entrée, the French Dip Sandwich. While we were waiting for our orders, about 15 minutes into our wait, another waiter came to our table and said that they only had one portion of the French Dip Sandwich left. That was very awkward. This information should have been shared with us when our orders were accepted. Or, did someone else, seated at another table, after us, and who got their food before us, did they get one of the last remaining portions? When we ordered dessert, we waited another 30 minutes for it to come. One of my guests ordered a cappuccino for dessert. That took over 10 minutes to arrive. The rest of the table waited another 15 to 20 minutes for the other desserts. Again, other tables, who ordered after us, received their items before we did. Bottom line, the food was very good. However, the waiting put a damper on the evening. The cost of the meal, all in, minus tip, was over $300. For that cost, I would have hoped for better service. read more

Sweetest restaurant we visited during our bachelorette. We were a big party because we were celebrating and in hiking clothes so a little underdressed but we were very hungry. This was one of the few restaurants that would accommodate our party. There was around 12 of us. We made it a little difficult because we had asked to sit outside but there were too many flies. They were very sweet and accommodated us inside last minute! So sorry GT! The food and drinks were delicious. We had the Gravity Burger with fries, Maine Lobster Roll with Mac'n cheese, Crispy Fried Chicken with Mac salad, and Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and a biscuit. They gave me a complimentary dessert which we shared around the table and loved! This was the best restaurant we visited and made me feel so special during my bachelorette weekend.
