Chicken fried flat iron steak and hasbrowns

I arrived at 7:30 and was promptly seated. The front of house were welcoming and friendly. I order my usual black coffee. I also ordered the Country Fried Steak with hash browns and eggs over medium. The portions were generous. The eggs were perfectly cooked and had beautiful golden yolks that flowed just right. The hash browns were crispy on the outside and were warm and tender on the inside. Do not get me wrong - the steak was very good! The gravy was top notch and breading was flavorful and had a nice texture. And the steak was super tender. But, I'm still going to quibble with descriptions and the use of the phrase "hand pounded" - it is definitely hand breaded, it may have been patted, but it was most definitely not "pounded". Again the steak was very good! But some people may be put off with the liver flavor. It was distinctive but I happen to like liver so it was no problem for me. My guess is that the steak is pre-cooked in a sous vide and held there to speed things up and keep the consistency. So it is possible that these were just started a bit early and held there. It just means that it was a little higher in iron than it would have otherwise been.

Hashbrowns are as big as the whole plate so if this is something you crave in the morning, you have to come here. Overall, most plates required salt, but they're gravy is amazing and definitely aside you should get with any order. There is with meat and without meat options. Generous portion size, long wait time

I've been to Gravy a few times now, always in the middle of the week, and it's quick and easy to get a table. This place is comfort food done right. The service has always been fast, friendly, and super attentive without feeling rushed. Everything comes out quickly, which is perfect because I am always starving when I arrive. Portions are generous, and everything I've had has been absolutely amazing. The biscuits and gravy are easily some of the best I've had. Rich, savory, and super satisfying. It's officially my new go-to spot anytime I need biscuits and gravy. Although the standout to me was the banana chocolate pancake. It was unreal! Soft, fluffy, and packed with banana baked right into the batter, giving it this warm, naturally sweet flavor in every bite. It's indulgent in the best way possible and definitely something I'd order again. This is such a laid back breakfast spot, so this just wrapped everything together. Overall, everything here is just so good, it's one of those places where you leave full, happy, and already thinking about what you're going to order next time.

One of the best breakfast I've ever had! Food was incredible on all points, the service was friendly but not the obnoxious fake type, and it's a laid back place for a quiet breakfast for someone who was barely waking up! It's obviously in the name, but the gravy was incredible and the chicken fried steak was a legit piece of steak in batter that didn't just fall apart. The home style potatoes had amazing grilled onions and were hand cut, and the Greco Style omelet was a flavor bonanza! Can't wait to go back!

It's been a fruitful two decades for Gravy, their food has been so widely acclaimed that they've become one of the most recognized brands / establishments in Portland. There is practically a wait during all hours of the day, which is a testament to their popularity and success. The consistency has paid off: they're still one of the tastiest options for breakfast and American comfort food. The place is understandably on the smaller side, with just enough seating for a handful of groups, lots of natural lighting, and an open kitchen that is buzzing throughout the day. Parking is all streetside, whether it's paid for along Mississippi, or a couple of blocks of residential parking. The neighborhood has evolved over the last couple of decades and Gravy has been a big driver to bringing relevance and gentrification to the area. Waiting is a big part of the experience unfortunately. There are no reservations or a waiting area inside, so folks (and their completed parties) should be directly outside. Don't feel like waiting? Give their takeout a spin. Call them directly (#1) but be sure to check out their latest menu online. The portions are excellent. Most plates are heavy and hearty, with the presentation on point. The hashbrowns are indeed crispy and uniquely shaped in a way where they remind me of a pancake in shredded potato form. The corned beef hash is made in house and is tasty as it is colorful. I appreciate the fluffiness of the pancakes, the heartiness of the omelets, and their monte cristo. My steak (a la steak and eggs) wasn't cooked to my liking, but I was still happy to eat it anyway. This isolated paragraph is dedicated to their biscuits and gravy, but really on the latter. It has the essence of the breakfast sausage, is perfectly creamy, and utterly indulgent to the point where I can say it's one of the best I've ever had. While the biscuit is soft, fluffy, and is respectable on its own, the gravy is absolutely what makes the dish nearly flawless. In fact, if they sold it by the bottle, I'd demand a jug. It is the kind of semi-salty gooeyness that elevates any of their breakfast plates. I want to drown it in my hashbrowns and eggs, dip my toast in it, and schlop it all up like no one is looking. (#2) Prices are in the sub $20 range for each plate. This is by no means budget friendly for anyone but there are other things to know: $2 is charged for split plates, there is no more than 2 cards per table, and an 18% gratuity is automatically added for parties of 6 or more. (#3) Kevin was an outstanding waiter. He was often behind the counter and handling multiple tables all on his own. The rest of the staff really needs to pick up the pace, since many tables sat unclaimed since they weren't cleared and cleaned quickly enough. Just getting on top of this would cut the wait times for many, and allow others to enjoy what most folks eating are already aware of. However, good patience is a virtuous thing, in which if most patrons have it, then there is always something excellent waiting beyond the Gravy doors. __________ (#1) 503-287-8800. Ate here a while ago and realized I never finished or published my review, here goes. Really enjoyed the food here, wait took about an hour though, it was a sunday around 12pm, we were seated at the bar around 12:50ish. Service inside and food was quick though! Huge portions of food, good quality and prices match the quality and quantity. My boyfriend got a hash scramble of sorts, I typically go sweeter for breakfast so I had the french toast. Portions were huge of course, we were easily able to share both and I still didn't even fully finish mine. The french toast here is made with challah bread which is definitely one of my favorites! Also I ordered the 2 piece plate but if they're small they said they give you the extra piece anyway. Very generous. Would love to return here, just know that timing was a thing because it gets packed here very quickly, unless that has died down, but it was also a sunday anyway.

Ok, seriously, oatmeal crème brûlée??? In YOUR CHOICE of decadent flavors??? Uhhhh, yeAH! Sign me UP! While hubs enjoyed 3 strips of bacon with 2 over easy eggs and house made biscuit, I was ALL ABOUT the oat meal bowl. A HUGE serving of Bob's Red Mill oatmeal and local berries brûlée(d?) with a delicious sweet crusty dome over the mixed berries and oats. Service was friendly, efficient and executed with smiles galore. This cozy spot is comfortable and inviting and the food was delicious and plentiful. My wife and I are breakfast food fanatics. So when we came upon gravy, we had to give it a try. Since we were in a bit of a time crunch, we got our food to-go. They were super busy but took or order right away. The server was really friendly giving the place an over all local diner vibe. It only took them like 15min to make the food which was also awesome. Their food reminds me of one of those local diners I used to go to as a kid. Big portions of decent breakfast food. The scramble we got was gigantic with a huge frisbee of hash browns in top. The biscuit was butter and fluffy. Their French toast was good but there were some areas where it was undercooked. Other than that it was a solid meal.

Very small breakfast spot, it had a wait time but I can definitely see why. The food was so delicious, I've never had veggie gravy before and it blew my mind how flavorful it was! The French toast was so soft and fluffy, I definitely recommend getting one of their sweets as their pancakes also looked so good! Everyone there was so sweet and attentive. You will not leave this place hungry. Portions are HUGE! Food was totally solid. Our server was excellent - it was busy but he was so attentive consistently refilling our waters and coffee. Ambiance is nice and informal. It's a small space and is very popular so there will most likely be a line. Get there early to avoid the extra long waits!

I have gone to Gravy for the last several years for brunch and it never disappoints. The southern comfort menu, massive portions, and reasonable prices cannot be beat. The restaurant is located on the Mississippi. The whole party should be there after waitlisting before the staff will seat you. The crowning jewels they offer are definitely the corned beef hash and French toast. The corned beef chunks are large and sizable in between the pan fried onions and potatoes. It's always well seasoned and satiating. Now onto the French toast. It is made with challah bread. It's decadently dense but thick and fluffy. It's too too eggy or sweet. It can stand on its own without additional syrup. Lastly, even though it was packed, our server was on point, always checking in, refilling our tea cups, and rearranging our plates to make room. Gravy is my trusted go to!

Was this place worth the 1.5 hour wait with sleep deprived mom, a 3 month old baby, and a hangry and bored toddler. HECK YES!! This is what made it worth it. THE FOOD: Greasy corned beef hash and sunny side up eggs to the fullest. My side of long shreds of hash browns and fry cake were the perfect starch to soak up the grease in my belly. THE SERVICE: Did I mention my bored and hangry toddler. Did I also mention she is a pretty messy eater. Our server was patient, funny, and totally chill with us and my little girl. EXTRAS: books for kids to read and stickers of the childish gambino. If you are looking for a solid comfort/cheat day/life's too short meal then definitely make Gravy a must do on your list! read more

Visiting Portland and on my list to do was to eat at a great Brunch place. Eating here does not disappoint! The vibe was great with a mix of different types of customers, from young and tendy to olders just wanting to eat. Workers are friendly and helped first timers like me. Portions are huge, so the price is worth it. I couldn't even finish my Monte Cristo (which is amazing fyi) and I'm usually the first to finish my plate in my family. Also make sure you order a dish with gravy, cause their sausage gravy is amazing also. I kinda wish I can bathe in their gravy LOL read more

This is a great place for breakfast or any other meal. Everything is fresh and home made.. even their fantastic hot sauce. Coffee is great and the lemonade if fresh. The service is good and friendly. It is a very popular spot, so get there early for breakfast or try and go at off hours. The portions are ENORMOUS! My dad and I shared a scramble and it was still too much food for us. read more

We've eaten at Gravy twice now and it's consistently delicious. Our favorite dishes include the apple raisin oatmeal and the eponymous biscuits and gravy. It's a great value and worth the wait. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table at 10 on a Monday, but the food and service never disappoint. And with the large portions, there's a good chance you'll have food to take home. read more

We were expecting a long wait when we arrived on a Sunday morning for breakfast, but because we were only a party of two and were comfortable sitting at the bar/counter, we were seated within five minutes. Biscuits and gravy were incredible. I enjoyed a smooth and house potatoes too. I also love that this restaurant is along a great street of other businesses. read more

My friend ordered the roast beef hash, I got the fried chicken and we shared two biscuits with sausage gravy. I would say the fried chicken was the perfect amount of battered and fried and it came with veggie gravy, which we both liked better than the sausage gravy. The biscuits were huge and heavenly. I kid you not, I said something along the lines of "mmmm" and "oh my god this biscuit is so good" EVERY time I had a bite. We went in with quite the appetite and still had leftovers because the servings were that big so keep that in mind when you're ordering. It's a pretty small place. The host was about to seat us at a small table for two, which was very close to the next table over, which I didn't like. Luckily two counter seats opened (must be 21+) so I requested for that. This was a much better choice; it was more spacious, I like people watching so it was fun seeing the servers and kitchen work, and I'm short so the stool seats made me feel tall haha. Gravy continues to be my favorite spot for breakfast food! Nearly every dish is simply delicious, and they have a lot of options, including a generous selection of items to make a custom scramble or omelet. The portions are huge and most tables happily walk out with leftovers. They don't necessarily offer many vogue choices, instead choosing to present more classic diner fare that's dressed up. The Chili Verde is awesome, and the Challah French Toast is heavenly, but you really can't go wrong. They do lunch pretty well too, though they aren't known for it. The soup is made fresh daily and the sandwiches are delicious. I've seen a lot of comments regarding the wait, the inconsistency of the food, and the fact they charge to split plates. I suppose you can't please everyone! There is a wait, especially on the weekends. Why? Because it's GOOD (and a pretty small space!) The biscuits, house-made habanero sauce, and gravy CAN be inconsistent, it's true...perhaps the only real negative. But I encourage anyone to try it again if you've had a bad experience. Or even SAY something! As long as you don't eat half the item first, the staff will nearly always replace it for you :) One more thing: if the flavors here are "bland" or things are "greasy"...well, that's pretty subjective really. Bland surprises me but greasy, yes, some items can be (especially the Corned Beef Hash). If your on Yelp, and have read the reviews, this shouldn't surprise you. Fwiw, in my experience, Hash is ALWAYS greasy lol! I think everyone acknowledges the biscuits can be too hard sometimes, their only real consistent flaw :) A note on the gravy: It is NOT a classic white sausage gravy. It is an almost-orange color, which I think throws people. Because it's made fresh daily, it can be inconsistent, but is typically delicious. Most of Gravy's signature items are made every day from scratch and from recipes developed either by the owner or the kitchen staff. read more

First and foremost the thing that needs to be addressed is portions. If you like to eat light and dainty go to a chain that doesn't care about the food. Ok no it shows that they care about the product in portions, flavors, and love. I had the Delisa and I'm a 300lb guy who could not finish my meal and trust me I tried I was one of the greatest omelettes of my life full of goodness In every bite. The hash browns were enough to feed a family. The meats were so good so much flavor I couldn't stop And as I sat there and watched more and more food come out the more I wanted. I will never for the life of me understand people's obsession with this place. I'm someone who loves traditional breakfast and is even willing to wait an hour or more for brunch and this places falls SO short. I was also treated very poorly by a server after I had to handle a work emergency at my table. I'm not sure if she found it rude of me to be on my phone but the service was unacceptable and SO rude. The food is below sub-par and the wait is NOT WORTH IT. There is such a long list of great brunch places in Portland, I recommend you visit those instead! read more

I got the chicken Fried Steak, it was delicious! Too bad it didn't come with a biscuit, I had to order it on the side, however it was big. They make their own jelly, I tried the raspberry and it was good. They also make there own house ketchup. I love crispy, but the hash brown came out too crispy and not enough soft middle. I ordered a side of house sausage ( I love sausage) expecting a link, but it was a patty and a little too spicy. I wish the menu would specify more on the sausage. #AlgoBien read more

good, enormous sharing portions. i got the chicken fried steak with hashbrowns and over easy egg, large OJ. OJ is from a jug so not fresh squeezed. The fried steak was good, not too oily but could have used more flavor. Hash brown was shredded potato fried in a small pan extra crispy on the outside and soft inside, definitely the better part on the plate. Eggs were cooked perfectly but with a lot of oil, not butter, which is nice because butter would have made it way too rich and gross. overall it was good, but it didnt blow me away. HUGE lines so come early! read more

I came here a few times and was pretty decent years ago. My review for today is 2. I had a scramble with meat. I know meat that is fatty is oily, but the food had pools of oil on the plate (clear oil maybe what the food was cooked in). I like fried foods but this was insane and not tasty the gobs of oil ruined any good taste it may have had. I barely ate any and wasn't asked if I like it, and no comment when I said I would not like a to-go box. I'm not big on complaining, but it was apparent I didn't like the food, I won't go back. read more

We were on our way home from our family vacation, driving through Portland back to SoCal. My wife heard about "Gravy", and we decided a place with that name had to be worth a small side trip (and we were hungry). Turned out to be all I hoped for. All the food looked great, but I have yet to see/taste/experience a biscuit as good as I got. Take a look at my photo. It brings tears to my eyes. The perfect biscuit. It didn't need gravy... but I got some of that wunnerful stuff slathered all over it anyway! I even ordered a biscuit to go just so I could show it to my cook friend when I got home and set her straight about what a biscuit really is (we've had discussions). Small place, you'll wait in line (we about 45 minutes), but great service, great atmosphere and TRULY great food. Dang. Now I want to fly back to Portland for breakfast tomorrow morning! read more

Came here while my sister was in Emanuel hospital because we needed to get away for a bit. The food here was outstanding! Everyone ordered something different and loved what they got! The service was good, they were quick to get us seated and attentive with drinks. We had a large group and they were still able to find us a spot very quickly. Great experience and would go back. read more

I had the hash with French Toast as my side. It was way more food than I could eat by myself but the French Toast was probably one of the best I have ever had. The cornbeef hash here is unique and not really my favorite style but I would definitely come back here just for the French Toast and the great service. Currently wishing I had some of that challah bread French toast in front of me. read more

Huge portions and delicious food! I had the corner beef hash with a short stack. Corned beef was delicious and the over medium eggs I ordered were actually cooked over medium! The house hot sauce they have is delicious. Pancakes were huge, fluffy and delicious. They don't give you much syrup so be sure to ask for more! Not a ton of seating and definitely not the best place for groups of 6+ but our group made it work with 4 at a table and 3 at the bar. Definitely will be back to try their massive omelettes or something else. read more

This place is amazing! My family and I were in town for a few days and came across this place and it was such a great experience. The food was beyond tasty and the staff so friendly. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and it was so incredibly delicious. The biscuits were light and fluffy and the gravy so yummy. My husband ordered an omelette and he stated it was the best he's ever eaten. My daughter had the brulee oatmeal with fresh berries and she said she loved it. We will definitely be going back our next trip to Portland. read more

The food is amazing. I'd recommend the Monte Cristo - it's way more food than you should be able to eat, so expect to take home leftovers. This is one of my favorite breakfast places in all of Portland. read more

I've eaten at this blessing of a breakfast joint the last 3 times I've visited Portland. Wow! It's just so darn tasty! The Greco is amazing. The mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and spinach are a great combo with the perfect amount of swiss cheese that they add. Yesterday I tried The Bacato, which was not a disappointing chance to my Greco routine. Bacon, green onion and tomato combined with cream cheese......I think my mouth just started watering thinking about it. In addition to great flavors, they give you the option of making your egg dishes scrambles or omelettes automatically. It is very popular, so the wait can definitely be an unfortunate side note. But, believe you me, you won't be sorry you waited. The service is always good and friendly. Did I mention how crazy big the portions are? Well, they're CRAZY BIG! Yum yum yum! The vegetarian gravy is amazing! Since I've tried it here, I've made a point to try veggie gravy at other places. None come anywhere close. This is all I eat here, and I can't imagine I'll be straying from that anytime soon. Only complaint is that the scrambled eggs could be better. They weren't bad, just not amazing. Mimosa was great, but pricey as is the Portland way. I will not complain about the wait, as there are very few places I've been in this city where I don't have to wait for breakfast. Also, I've been here a couple of times where I was seated within 10 minutes. read more

Massive portions! was so good too. Been here a handful of times and every time I have a visitor, I would bring them here too. When I do come here with my family, we always get the same thing... the Dalise scramble, french toast, and the oatmeal brulee. It's always so good. the oatmeal is like no other i've eaten before. totally melts in your mouth. it is a bit pricey thatn you are used to for oatmeal, but so worth to try it at least once. can't wait to go back again. read more

I love this place! I am from Vegas but EVERY TIME I come here since I have been shown this place I make sure to stop here for breakfast! I like the art on the walls. Atmosphere is relaxed. The best thing to eat is the vegetarian gravy with the biscuit! Wow. I still dream of that dish. Its been a while since I have visited. But one day we shall be reunited. I had some kind of omelet with cream cheese and sautéed onions. SOOO GOOD! I have always wanted to try the little donut ball looking things. Maybe one day when I come back! read more

The wait is worth it. This place makes me want to go back and lower my rating on other restaurants. I enjoy the biscuits and gravy with a egg and hash brown. It's good to just mix it all together yum! Not a very big place so there is always a wait. But if you dare to take on the 30 min wait you will be rewarded. read more

Had the Greco and a White Russian, the Greco was delicious-mushrooms were my favorite part. I also tried the fakin bacon which was a pleasant surprise! White Russian was good they did a heavy pour. Very happy with this place, would return! read more

A good spot on Mississippi if you're a hungry teenager and not too picky, or maybe following a long night of drinking... Gravy seemed like a good option for Sunday brunch after we (my wife and I) just missed the cut at Tin Shed. After our meal, we were surprised it was 4-star rated on Yelp, with so many much better brunch options in Portland. Our waitress was friendly. The food was way on the heavy side...something wrong with the ingredients used, the way it was cooked, or both. It honestly took us both about two days to recover. I Had the sweet potato buckwheat pancakes--the heaviness and hot temperature overwhelmed any flavor of sweet potato or buckwheat. My wife had eggs, hash brown, bacon, and braised greens--the bacon was probably the best thing either of us had there. The ventilation wasn't great either. I wouldn't recommend this spot, and we don't intend on returning....but maybe we just came on a bad day. read more

A loud voice said "Its not your time yet. Return and enjoy the rest of your meal." I ascend back to the chair and every chicken and every waffle was gone. The servers were SO kind. The first thing that hit my palate was the blue cheese and caramelized onions. Delicious combination. I was happy to see that the omelette was overflowing with caramelized onions as I love them. The accompanying roasted potatoes were cooked perfectly. I also got an espresso martini to wake me up and give me a buzz to start my day. Upon first impression, if I lived in Portland, I would come here weekly. I could see this being the place for brunch with girlfriends to catch up over cocktails.

Tasty but I was feeling very healthy by then with all the veggies! (Couldn't they have replaced that with pasta? Sorry, I'm whining here). Our last savory dish was eggplant parm. It came with more focaccia. Again, I'd have loved pasta instead. Isn't that what one goes to an Italian restaurant for? Finally there were delicious, short, buttery Italian wedding cookies. But then our waiter surprised us with cannoli, for our anniversary! It sat atop Maryhill peach compote. Excellent! The service was impeccable. Our waiter was knowledgeable, personable and very attentive. We were also served by some other staff who did a great job as well. Good thing we've been married 42 years. If this was a first date where you want to get to know each other, it would be hard because it's pretty loud and the tables are crammed closely together. They really need a bigger space. We are looking forward to bringing friends and family here in the future.

To all who are thinking of dining here and want to be treated fairly. They exhibited Unfair business practice towards us as their customers. 5 adults and a 3 year old ate here Friday afternoon, 1/27, about 3 pm. The food was good but our server was mediocre. it wasn't busy so there was no excuse for not providing us good service. We decided a 10% tip was more than fair. Normally if service is good we give a 20% tip. With us were 2 fine dining restaurant servers who had 30 years experience between them working at 1 star up to 5 star restaurants. When the server gave us the bill with an 18% automatic gratuity due to a group of 6 diners We went from having a good experience here to walking out thinking the ownership is greedy and unfair. Not to mention is it is ILLEGAL to force customers to pay an autogratuity as a tip. If it is called a service fee it can't be considered a tip, but must be part of the wage paid to the server. We have reported this establishment to the Better Business Bureau and the State Attorney General's Office for illegal, unfair business practice. A 2014 rule change by the Internal Revenue Service has created a significant incentive for employers to stop imposing mandatory service charges, if the employer hands any of that money over to employees. . Any portion of a mandatory service charge paid to employees must be treated as wages, not tips. This means the employer must withhold and pay Social Security and Medicare (FICA) tax on these amounts, may not claim a credit against its tax obligations for these amounts (as it can for tips), and must include them as part of the employee's hourly wage when determining overtime payments, among other things. The rule applies only to mandatory service charges. For the amount to count as a tip rather than a service charge, all of the following must be true: The payment must be entirely voluntary The customer must have the unrestricted right to determine the amount The amount cannot be set by employer policy or subject to negotiation with the employer. The customer must have the right to determine who receives the payment. There is no place for this greedy establishment in Portland. If you go there with 6 or more and they give you a bill with an 18% autogratuity, pay only the food charges and walk. The law is on your side. We gave Gravy a chance to respond for over a week, and refund some of our forced tip, but they apparently think they are in the right and did not respond.... read more

They say doing something over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of crazy...Call me crazy...I keep returning to Gravy hoping for a good meal and friendly service but it never happens. Part of my want for this to be something that it isn't is the shear location ( its within walking distance of my apartment)... I walked down today at about 8am (trying to beat the hipster crowds that start infesting the place around 9 and 10am). There were quite a few tables available when we walked in and we asked if we could have a four-top near the window as I am one of those angst-riddled people that don't like being seated in the middle of the room, I prefer the perimeter where you are less overtaken by noise and crowds. The host rudely said "no, those tables have to stay open for bigger parties"...Ok, try and let it go... Then not more than 5 minutes had passed and a couple (2 people) were sat at a four-top right next to us!!! That should have been my queue to leave but I didn't. My friend and I both ordered breakfasts with hash browns...She had the roast beef hash and I had biscuits and gravy with a side of hash browns. Both of our meals were sitting in a pool of oil...Her roast beef hash was brown and unidentifiable like Chinese food. My biscuit was very dry and the gravy was nothing special. I think this place had its hay-day 10 years ago when there wasn't as much competition but it seriously lacks in taste and service. As for my laziness in wanting a close breakfast spot that meets my expectations...I will just have to wait...Portland is popping up new places weekly. read more

The wait times for breakfast/brunch at this establishment can be discouraging to the uninitiated customer, but trust me...it's well worth the wait. I remember the first time I went there I had ordered a breakfast burrito with an additional "small" stack of pancakes on the side. Believe me, there is NOTHING small about the portions on the menu, even sides. By the end of crossing the rubicon of flapjacks, eggs, potatos, and other goodies my selection had bestowed, I felt like I had to run a Tough Mudder course just to feel as if I had never entered the restaurant at all that day. Don't get me started on what my other family members had ordered either...think of our table that day as the candy meadow scene in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory; a full smorgasboard of eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy. To be honest, I am starting to feel out of breath just thinking about it. And of course it all tastes delicious. There was not a moment in any of the times I've attended Gravy where I thought the food was suspiciously cold or undercooked, or that plate x had too many spices on the y portion; everything was PERFECT foodwise. The coffee and juices are nothing too much to brag about on their own, but when paired with what's on the plate, they're totally forgivable. Since I've never actually tried the strictly lunch menu, I can't give this restaurant a five. In addition to fantastic service however, I'd say the bang for your buck on the food at Gravy is totally worth it. First, there's the wait. Like other brunch joints in PDX, it is not short. I think we waited about 90 minutes for a table. But in this town, waiting a while for Sunday brunch is a staple. It's part of our identity, not unlike beer and bicycles and vegan strippers. But the bespectacled, be-skinny-jeaned, be-plaid-shirted host was kind of a turd and got pissy when I told him that we must not have heard him call our name 10 minutes ago, even though we were standing right outside the front door and heard everyone else's name just fine. Oh well, we got our table a few minutes later and our waitress was awesome! Sweet, funny, patient and charming. Never had to ask for more coffee or water. Yeah, she was that good. I had the fried chicken with an egg and veggie gravy. (Full disclosure: veggie gravy is for old ladies with heart conditions. I substituted for sausage gravy and to Gravy's credit, they did not skimp on the sausage.) It was good, not great. The chicken was a bit tough and the food was just a few steps above bland. Luckily, their house-made hot-sauce was on hand to lend some spice to the proceedings. I was also able to sample the salmon hash, which was out of this freakin' world. Smokey and loaded with salmon. I don't think I'd put it above, or even on par with, the salmon scramble at Kenny & Zukes, but it's approaching contender-status. Overall, if I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. This morning, my family had a very filling and delicious breakfast at Gravy, and overall, it was a solid experience. The food was fantastic, and we left completely satisfied. I went with the biscuits and gravy, and I have to say, it did not disappoint. The biscuits were soft, flaky, and perfect for soaking up the rich, flavorful gravy. I usually like my gravy a little less sweet and more savory. I also got the crispy hash browns with a fried egg on top, which were perfectly cooked--crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just as they should be. My wife had the Bacato scramble, which she enjoyed but mentioned that it had a little too much bacon. She said the bacon flavor was so strong that it overpowered the other ingredients, which, for her, was a bit of a downside. The restaurant wasn't very busy when we arrived, but it quickly filled up, and that's when things got a bit hectic. Our service was average--nothing exceptional, but not bad either. We could tell the waitress and the one other server were really doing their best to keep up with the rush, and they were both working hard. It felt a little understaffed, which was understandable given the growing crowd. Overall, we had a great time at Gravy. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and while the service could have been a bit more attentive, we know they were doing their best. The WORST breakfast ever. I ordered the roast beef hash. When it arrived I thought I had been transported to a Chinese Restaurant because the plate that was put down before me looked like Mu Shu Pork. Everything had a brown cast to it and it was shredded. The beef was practically nonexistent and the few pieces I found were fatty. Instead of using cubed home fries to make the hash they used shredded potatoes. There was about an inch of reddish oil at the bottom of the dish. The entire dish was so oily and gross that the only thing I could eat was a little bit of the scrambled eggs that were not touching the oil. Our waiter was not very observant. We had to ask for refills on coffee and water. Had the waiter took the time to ask how our food was tasting, I would have told him that the entire dish was way too greasy and sent it back. Not sure why this restaurant keeps making the same mistakes. Upon reading other reviews it seems that this is an ongoing problem with the cooks using too much oil. There are many other great breakfast places in Portland to go to and not waste my time or money on this pretentious place, where all the waiters wear plaid shirts, skinny jeans and beards. read more

This place is pretty decent. I feel like you are either going to love it, or walk out thinking, "Meh". I fell more towards the "Meh" side, but I wouldn't let that deter you from eating here by any means. I feel like a place named "Gravy" should pride itself on its namesake item, but the gravy was just your plain, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum, basic gravy. I have had far better country gravys in mom and pop diners and road side greasy spoons NOT in the heart of what everyone considers a foodie mecca. (Ichabod's in Scappoose - Coleman's outside of Banks) The portions are huge (I often think of the line in Idiocracy, "How about an order of EXTRA BIG-AZZ FRIES!!!!") when I eat here and that alone keeps me coming back. If you are looking for some sort of culinary experience that will blow your mind, maybe it will, maybe it won't. If you just want to sit down and have a pretty decent meal and take your leftovers home in a wheelbarrow, this is your place. read more

I spent my Christmas in Portland and on Boxing Day I and my son call in an order of two breakfast sandwiches. I sent to pick up the order he was ignored by everyone there but the insult to injury was when an smug waiter pushes he way in front of me as if me very existence was the most irritating moment of his day. I never received a acknowledgment or a "I'll be with you in a nonentity" no I just say there for twenty minutes. There two sandwiches were greasy and after their second bite( you know that moment you stomach is passed starvation) it was clear that is just tasteless. What a mess. Although I'm sure the lunch offerings are swell, breakfast is the main affair. Plan to wait. And wait. And if there are four or more of you, wait some more. The food is still worth it. Breakfast meals here are huge and very reasonably priced. Challah Bread French Toast is sweet, chewy and delicious. The "3" egg scrambles must have 6 eggs in them. The hashbrowns are perfectly crisped on the outside. Only 4 stars? Yeah. Well, there's the wait, weekends expect an hour, and the service is either spot on or a tad off. The food here is AMAZING. I love the delice omelette slathered in gravy. My husband prefers the brocato as does my roommate. Great brunch style restaurant, super popular and I recommend it to EVERYONE. I have no problem driving from Vancouver to get some food. They also have good cocktails and some "breakfast cocktails" if you need the hair of the dog or a nice kick start. I would recommend getting there before they open if you have a larger party as it is a hot spot and the wait can last upto 20-30 mins mid day. Even then it's worth the wait!!! The staff is also super chill and the atmosphere is rad. 100% recommend if you choose somewhere else you are seriously missing out. read more

The thing that I didnt like was the snappish tone the waitress had and the ridiculously long wait, does it really take that long to make an omelet and pancakes?Really people this is american breakfast food not ethnic food. It took 45 minutes for our food to come out. I was dining there with my family and the women hardly gave my dad a chance to speak. Also the most annoying part of our visit was that we were the only colored people there on a Sunday morning. It was filled with white hipsters. I'll start of with saying the food was fantastic, LARGE portions, and highly recommend it! I would give a higher rating if it wasn't for the negligence of the wait list sign up sheet. We went knowing we would wait at least an hour, just like many other breakfast establishments, but after 1h45 mins we were being skipped over repeatedly by parties with their names after mine. I addressed the gentleman right as he called for another name after mine and asked why we're being blatantly skipped, wasn't given an answer but simply given a table and no apology. Great sunday brunch, the wait for a table for 2 was less than 15 minutes, we had the monte cristo, and chicken fried steak. An will return and recommend to friends. Portions are very large but they only charge 2 bucks to split, well worth it, and the food came out quickly considering the place was full and on a 20 minute wait. Waitress never stopped back to see how the food was, but when its that good I think she assumed the best. I did run out of juice but the coffee was bottomless and quickly refreshed. This place is terrible. The wait is long, not because it is full but because they are perennially understaffed and wont seat you at open tables. After we wait for an hour and a half we had thoroughly perused the menu by the time we were finally seated. I asked if we could order right away. My request was denied. This place is one of the reasons Portland has a reputation of bad service. Also, huge quantities does not equal good food. They gravy was mediocre at best and it is supposed to be their specialty. I'm really disappointed with our experience at a restaurant we've visited regularly. Despite being there on time, we were seated after other guests who had added their names ahead of ours on the list. When I tried to discuss this with the manager, Misty, she was incredibly rude and accused us of lying about the situation. Her unprofessional attitude only added to the frustration. By far my new favorite breakfast place. Maybe a tid but more expensive than I'd like (10-12$ each for breakfast) but well worth it. Literally everything I've ever had here has been amazing! Just got back into town and had to hit this place up. Heard it was the best spot in the area. Suspect. Although it was very busy, service was prompt, coffee was keep full. For lunch I had the GrownUp Grilled Cheese Sandwich (a grilled cheese sandwich with caramelized onions) and a salad. The salad was warm, wilted and unappetizing, the tomatoes in the salad were so old they had burst. Mr. Wonderful had the Cat Fish and Chips, he ate it but wouldn't order it again. We had high hopes for this cute little nostalgic spot, and felt let down by the food. The service was efficient and friendly. The atmosphere is darling and the pristine Cadillac parked inside is something to be seen.

My mom said everyone was there, and before she could explain, the host interrupted her, said "no," and started counting on his fingers to point out someone was missing. It came off unnecessarily rude and a bit aggressive. After that, though, everything turned around. The service at the table was great--our waitress was warm, attentive, and kept my coffee topped off the whole time. The menu has tons of appealing options, including breakfast all day (always a win) and some solid brunch specials. I ordered the Fleetwood's Denver Deluxe omelet with ham, mushrooms, cheese, roasted red peppers, and green onions. It came with Cadillac potatoes and toast. The omelet was perfectly fluffy, and those potatoes were a standout--with a super flavorful spice mix that I'm still thinking about. My aunt went with her usual: a side of the potatoes topped with gravy and bacon, and my mom got creative and made a bacon sandwich using my toast plus a side of bacon--she was very happy with that decision. Overall, aside from the less-than-friendly check-in experience, everything else--from the atmosphere to the food to the table service--was excellent. Definitely feels like a great go-to brunch spot if you're in Portland!
