I arrived at 7:30 and was promptly seated. The front of house were welcoming and friendly. I order my usual black coffee. I also ordered the Country Fried Steak with hash browns and eggs over medium. The portions were generous. The eggs were perfectly cooked and had beautiful golden yolks that flowed just right. The hash browns were crispy on the outside and were warm and tender on the inside. Do not get me wrong - the steak was very good! The gravy was top notch and breading was flavorful and had a nice texture. And the steak was super tender. But, I'm still going to quibble with descriptions and the use of the phrase "hand pounded" - it is definitely hand breaded, it may have been patted, but it was most definitely not "pounded". Again the steak was very good! But some people may be put off with the liver flavor. It was distinctive but I happen to like liver so it was no problem for me. My guess is that the steak is pre-cooked in a sous vide and held there to speed things up and keep the consistency. So it is possible that these were just started a bit early and held there. It just means that it was a little higher in iron than it would have otherwise been.
Hashbrowns are as big as the whole plate so if this is something you crave in the morning, you have to come here. Overall, most plates required salt, but they're gravy is amazing and definitely aside you should get with any order. There is with meat and without meat options. Generous portion size, long wait time
I've been to Gravy a few times now, always in the middle of the week, and it's quick and easy to get a table. This place is comfort food done right. The service has always been fast, friendly, and super attentive without feeling rushed. Everything comes out quickly, which is perfect because I am always starving when I arrive. Portions are generous, and everything I've had has been absolutely amazing. The biscuits and gravy are easily some of the best I've had. Rich, savory, and super satisfying. It's officially my new go-to spot anytime I need biscuits and gravy. Although the standout to me was the banana chocolate pancake. It was unreal! Soft, fluffy, and packed with banana baked right into the batter, giving it this warm, naturally sweet flavor in every bite. It's indulgent in the best way possible and definitely something I'd order again. This is such a laid back breakfast spot, so this just wrapped everything together. Overall, everything here is just so good, it's one of those places where you leave full, happy, and already thinking about what you're going to order next time.
One of the best breakfast I've ever had! Food was incredible on all points, the service was friendly but not the obnoxious fake type, and it's a laid back place for a quiet breakfast for someone who was barely waking up! It's obviously in the name, but the gravy was incredible and the chicken fried steak was a legit piece of steak in batter that didn't just fall apart. The home style potatoes had amazing grilled onions and were hand cut, and the Greco Style omelet was a flavor bonanza! Can't wait to go back!
It's been a fruitful two decades for Gravy, their food has been so widely acclaimed that they've become one of the most recognized brands / establishments in Portland. There is practically a wait during all hours of the day, which is a testament to their popularity and success. The consistency has paid off: they're still one of the tastiest options for breakfast and American comfort food. The place is understandably on the smaller side, with just enough seating for a handful of groups, lots of natural lighting, and an open kitchen that is buzzing throughout the day. Parking is all streetside, whether it's paid for along Mississippi, or a couple of blocks of residential parking. The neighborhood has evolved over the last couple of decades and Gravy has been a big driver to bringing relevance and gentrification to the area. Waiting is a big part of the experience unfortunately. There are no reservations or a waiting area inside, so folks (and their completed parties) should be directly outside. Don't feel like waiting? Give their takeout a spin. Call them directly (#1) but be sure to check out their latest menu online. The portions are excellent. Most plates are heavy and hearty, with the presentation on point. The hashbrowns are indeed crispy and uniquely shaped in a way where they remind me of a pancake in shredded potato form. The corned beef hash is made in house and is tasty as it is colorful. I appreciate the fluffiness of the pancakes, the heartiness of the omelets, and their monte cristo. My steak (a la steak and eggs) wasn't cooked to my liking, but I was still happy to eat it anyway. This isolated paragraph is dedicated to their biscuits and gravy, but really on the latter. It has the essence of the breakfast sausage, is perfectly creamy, and utterly indulgent to the point where I can say it's one of the best I've ever had. While the biscuit is soft, fluffy, and is respectable on its own, the gravy is absolutely what makes the dish nearly flawless. In fact, if they sold it by the bottle, I'd demand a jug. It is the kind of semi-salty gooeyness that elevates any of their breakfast plates. I want to drown it in my hashbrowns and eggs, dip my toast in it, and schlop it all up like no one is looking. (#2) Prices are in the sub $20 range for each plate. This is by no means budget friendly for anyone but there are other things to know: $2 is charged for split plates, there is no more than 2 cards per table, and an 18% gratuity is automatically added for parties of 6 or more. (#3) Kevin was an outstanding waiter. He was often behind the counter and handling multiple tables all on his own. The rest of the staff really needs to pick up the pace, since many tables sat unclaimed since they weren't cleared and cleaned quickly enough. Just getting on top of this would cut the wait times for many, and allow others to enjoy what most folks eating are already aware of. However, good patience is a virtuous thing, in which if most patrons have it, then there is always something excellent waiting beyond the Gravy doors. __________ (#1) 503-287-8800. Ate here a while ago and realized I never finished or published my review, here goes. Really enjoyed the food here, wait took about an hour though, it was a sunday around 12pm, we were seated at the bar around 12:50ish. Service inside and food was quick though! Huge portions of food, good quality and prices match the quality and quantity. My boyfriend got a hash scramble of sorts, I typically go sweeter for breakfast so I had the french toast. Portions were huge of course, we were easily able to share both and I still didn't even fully finish mine. The french toast here is made with challah bread which is definitely one of my favorites! Also I ordered the 2 piece plate but if they're small they said they give you the extra piece anyway. Very generous. Would love to return here, just know that timing was a thing because it gets packed here very quickly, unless that has died down, but it was also a sunday anyway.
Ok, seriously, oatmeal crème brûlée??? In YOUR CHOICE of decadent flavors??? Uhhhh, yeAH! Sign me UP! While hubs enjoyed 3 strips of bacon with 2 over easy eggs and house made biscuit, I was ALL ABOUT the oat meal bowl. A HUGE serving of Bob's Red Mill oatmeal and local berries brûlée(d?) with a delicious sweet crusty dome over the mixed berries and oats. Service was friendly, efficient and executed with smiles galore. This cozy spot is comfortable and inviting and the food was delicious and plentiful. My wife and I are breakfast food fanatics. So when we came upon gravy, we had to give it a try. Since we were in a bit of a time crunch, we got our food to-go. They were super busy but took or order right away. The server was really friendly giving the place an over all local diner vibe. It only took them like 15min to make the food which was also awesome. Their food reminds me of one of those local diners I used to go to as a kid. Big portions of decent breakfast food. The scramble we got was gigantic with a huge frisbee of hash browns in top. The biscuit was butter and fluffy. Their French toast was good but there were some areas where it was undercooked. Other than that it was a solid meal.
Very small breakfast spot, it had a wait time but I can definitely see why. The food was so delicious, I've never had veggie gravy before and it blew my mind how flavorful it was! The French toast was so soft and fluffy, I definitely recommend getting one of their sweets as their pancakes also looked so good! Everyone there was so sweet and attentive. Would definitely come back again.
You will not leave this place hungry. Portions are HUGE! Food was totally solid. Our server was excellent - it was busy but he was so attentive consistently refilling our waters and coffee. Ambiance is nice and informal. It's a small space and is very popular so there will most likely be a line. Get there early to avoid the extra long waits!
I have gone to Gravy for the last several years for brunch and it never disappoints. The southern comfort menu, massive portions, and reasonable prices cannot be beat. The restaurant is located on the Mississippi. The whole party should be there after waitlisting before the staff will seat you. The crowning jewels they offer are definitely the corned beef hash and French toast. The corned beef chunks are large and sizable in between the pan fried onions and potatoes. It's always well seasoned and satiating. Now onto the French toast. It is made with challah bread. It's decadently dense but thick and fluffy. It's too too eggy or sweet. It can stand on its own without additional syrup. Lastly, even though it was packed, our server was on point, always checking in, refilling our tea cups, and rearranging our plates to make room. Gravy is my trusted go to!
I have been wanting to eat here for a while since every time I drive by there are tons of people waiting (so it must be good, right?). Finally had a chance to stop by for a bite on a Saturday morning. The wait was about 20 minutes (arrived at 11:20, seated by 11:40), spent the time looking at the menu so we were ready to order when we got to our table. Our food came out in 12 minutes which was impressive given how busy they were. We had the Monte Cristo, ham/bacon/cheddar omelette, and biscuit & sausage gravy. We he ham/bacon overwhelmed the amount of egg in the omelette so made it salty and hard to eat ... I'm sure it would have been fine with toast or hash browns but my son chose fruit as his side so nothing really to balance it out. I had previously been so the Sandy location and I have to admit that I prefer that one ... food is equally on par but the other location is calmer (not so busy) and more my speed. A bit of a wait but the wait was well worth it. We missed being seated but they still took us at the bar. I had a Bloody Mary which had a nice amount of heat and great flavor, and corned beef hash. The environment was laid back and clean. read more
Came here with a group of seven and had a wonderful morning breakfast!! It took a while for us to be seated but it was worth it!! Super cozy spot with intimate space and delicious food! I got the chille verde and it was the best breakfast meal I've had in Portland. Our servers was super kind and helpful and accommodating to our large group and the seating staff was kind and friendly. I love this spot and will definitely be coming back. read more
I very this place, I love the grub, and my fatboy heart loves the sheer weight of food they slap in your face.. But will kinda dont like breakfast spots, I mean... I do... but I can do it.. icando... this at my house, usually with 5x the meat, a fraction if the price... most times i leave with empty pockets and a half full belly.. here, well half is true. It's not expensive, but its not cheap, but pound for pound, it's a great deal and the pancakes are good (and I'm a die hard crepe guy!) Gravy is... well just not good ...its great!! I mean it's the name ya dork, you have to get it! I also went with a hash brown, it was fried to perfection, a def one flipper... and if you've ever made hashbrowns, you get one flip... its allor nothing, burnt and raw, not here!! I was worried that this place wasn't going to live up to the hype based on the reviews, but I was mistaken. MM MM WOW, it's so good!! Also worth the wait. We came on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend & as we expected the restaurant was packed at 8:30 am with a small group of people waiting outside. We waited less than 10 minutes for a table however larger groups were waiting longer. I got the Monte Cristo, & my hubby got the country-fried steak. We hardly said a word after our meal came because we were stuffing our faces & muttering "mm yummy" the entire time. The Monte Cristo is open-faced on a giant piece of French toast, with ham, Swiss, 2 eggs on top, & a side of syrup. You have your choice of various sides & I got the house potatoes. Hubby got the hash browns. 10/10 you have to check this place out! read more
let me talk about the food absolutely delicious. Everything we ordered was great. We overordered And we had so much leftovers but I had to try the biscuits and gravy which was to die for. The French toast delicious Build your own omelet which I copied when I saw here on Yelp delicious The potato pancake thing was to die for.. I would definitely recommend eating hereating here be prepared to take lots of leftovers or share.. 3 star is the attentiveness. The restaurant luckily was a little empty when we got there.We still have to ask different servers several times if we can at least get water or order. Nobody wanted to help us and our server was nowhere to be found. I was a little disappointed When people came 20-30 minutes after us they got their order took in food in front of them wave way before us it was very frustrating. In this time and age I would say it's the labor shortage but they had no shortage of labor they had plenty of staff.. read more

A great place to go for some filling brunch or lunch. The portions here are pretty healthy and sometimes enough to feed more than one person. My friend got the Monte Cristo and I had the Country Fried Steak. The portionsize of the Monte Cristo was enough to feed maybe 3 people. It was still made and I had a taste if it. Our first meal in Portland, and the bar has been set SUPER HIGH!!! Located on the bustling Mississippi Ave, where there are a dozen restaurants to pick from, Gravy is a perfect pick if you're ever feeling overwhelmed with choices. The staff was friendly, helpful and attentive (the ultimate qualities of waitstaff). And, the food... oh, the food. The food was so good, even a grumpy, dismissive and negligent waitperson couldn't ruin my time at Gravy! The portions are enormous, but a lot of food doesn't make a good meal. The flavors, the combinations of ingredients and the care that you can feel in your mouth and stomach are making me salivate as I write this. I mean, it's SUPER COMFORT FOOD. We got the Dalise - bacon, sausage, ham, sweet peppers, mushroom, onion, and cheddar, covered in sausage gravy with the hash browns, and we swapped out the side for the french toast (extra $3.75 and so worth it). We also asked for the sausage gravy on the side. Yes, I'm that person. I want it heavy... but, not too heavy. ok?! Anyway, pro-tip, you get the choice eggs, Ota tofu, house potatoes or hash browns that gets mixed into the dish... THEN, you get a side choice of fruit, greens, and house potatoes or hash browns. We went with the hash browns mixed in, so we could also get a little sweet in with the french toast. Because... I'm a sweet AND savory kind of person :) Between my partner and I, we barely made a dent in the meal... and we make dents! What can I say... one of the absolute best places in pdx to get breakfast/brunch! Definitely recommend going weekdays (if you can) since wait times can be anywhere from 30 minutes-2 hrs on weekends! My personal faves are the banana choco chip pancakes, side of hash browns and a hot chocolate! Pricing is very reasonable considering the portions are very generous. Stopped by before our drive back down to SoCal and boy was this place a treat! Great place if you wanted to stop by for a cute brunch! I got their Chile Verde (10/10) while my boyfriend got the Dalise (7/10). We concluded that their "Gravy Platters" are probably the only section we would order off of next time. He said his scramble was alright but not as delicious as the Chile Verde. Oooo, we aren't the biggest fans of sweet breakfasts but their french toast LOOKED SO BOMB We also loved the consistency of the hashbrowns (so crispy and soft on the inside). Only complaint is that they weren't seasoned which I'm assuming is the point of the salt & pep on the table but you'd think they'd at least season them a little right? Finally, as every other review has mentioned, their portions are huge and totally worth it. Next time I'd order us one thing off their "gravy platters" and maybe a side of french toast as like a morning dessert (really had me asking myself why I wouldn't eat sweet foods for breakfast). It's ALL gravy, babyyy! Gravy just showed your girl what a real Portland brunch should be like, and I'm all about that life. I've gotta say, Portland be killin' the brunch game and Gravy is no exception. I hit up Gravy on a late Friday morning, and the spot was bustling. It was a full house inside and they had a waitlist going. Luckily some space at the counter had just opened up, so I snagged it with the quickness. What's great about sitting at the counter is that not only do you cut down on the waiting time, but you also have a nice view of the cooks makin' in happen in the kitchen. They've got a good looking menu with adequate amount of options for both food and drink. After reading all of their rave reviews about their French toast, I knew that I had to have it. I ordered their 1/2 portion of French toast, house made sausage, scrambled eggs, and a homemade hot chocolate to top it all off. I had one of those moments y'all. You know, that moment when you start eating and your eyes roll to the back of your head. That moment when you can't even keep your damn eyes open because the food is just so delicious. That very moment when you catch yourself saying "Mmmm" after each and every bite. Yep, THAT part. Food was just so effing delicious and tasted just as wonderful the next day. The French toast is made with Challah bread. If you've ever had this bread, you should already know how thick and rich it is. This French toast Challah bread combo was just straight dynamite, I tell ya. The bread was nice and thick, perfectly coated with that oh so lovable eggy batter, and buttered up for the Gawds with melted butter. The syrup just soaked into the bread like a sponge, but it wasn't drying. It was seriously just perfecto. Great taste and excellent quality! Not to mention that these pieces of toast were HUGE and I could only eat one of the two pieces because they felt more like 4 pieces due to their size. The house made sausage was so delightful! It was seasoned well with the perfect little kick of spice. I'm a bacon girl at heart and almost went my normal bacon route until my server convinced me to try their sausage. SO glad that she persuaded me to try it because it was a serious winner. She also recommended that I try their hot chocolate since it was another specialty that they make in-house. I obliged and wasn't left disappointed. This chocolate was SO rich and SO enjoyable. If you know me, you know that I like my hot chocolate dangerously sweet. And damnit, they DID that! And, with the whipped cream? And, sittin' pretty in that glass mug though? Whaaat??! Just GIMME that chocolate! It was life... in a mug. Loved it to pieces and sipped it all the way down to the last drop. Plate SCRAPED. The end. But wait! Let me not forget to mention the wonderful service! Despite how busy it was, service was on point! Food came out quickly and everyone that I encountered was helpful and friendly. Didn't have to wait a century for my check to arrive and not once did I feel ignored or neglected. This deserves several hand claps in my book! It's true... Huge huge portions. We got greedy - ordered 4 plates for 3 people and ended up with enough food for dinner. Small spot and very limited seating inside per COVID. Portion sizes aren't their specialty. As in they only know how to do big and somehow I like that. I came here with my mom on a Wednesday at noon and we were seated immediately. Food: We shared the country fried steak and two French toast pieces and gosh was that more than enough! The French toast was light and buttery and the Steak was chewy! I enjoyed very much the hash browns that came with the steak. I personally enjoyed the fried part of the steak a lot since it had a bready texture. Service: The waiters here are kind and accommodating! We got hot water refilled a lot. Ambiance: This place is a lot like a home and cozy! Came back to Portland for a short visit and was lovely to stay with a friend in the North Mississippi neighborhood. We came here for Brunch as it's my friend's favorite spot in the neighborhood. From the outside you can't really see inside...but once you walk in almost every table is filled. Very cozy, mask required, you sign in to get called. Option to sit at the bar too. My friend ordered her favorite Chile verde dish and she wasn't willing to share. It looked so good I decided to order the same thing! Instead of has browns I opted for a side of French toast. As for drinks I got the refillable coffee...wish they had latte options but it's Portland...coffee is always good! The food came and everything was perfectly delicious! The eggs were cooked perfectly. The Chile wasn't too spicy and all the flavors tasted amazing together! Fresh tortillas. Oh! And the French toasts were heavenly! Two big pieces. The bread was so fluffy and with tea maple syrup served warm. I forced myself to eat a whole one and take the other one home. Service was great! They gave me little containers per my request as I like to separate out the sauces! Oh they have this spicy sauce that's so good! They even sell the bottle! Would totally buy one if I could take it home...but I only get to fly with a carry on and no liquid So good I came back the next day and had the same thing!! Til next time! read more

This was one of the best choices I made on my trip to Portland. The vibe is so fun and it was homey and cozy. We were seated quickly and the menu made it so hard to choose what to eat! We ended up getting the Chile Verde, Hash-browns, and Oatmeal Brûlée. I couldn't even eat 1/3 of my food- the portions were HUGE! I loved the oatmeal so much- it was sweet and filling. This was also the biggest plate of hash browns I've ever seen and I loved them! read more

This is one of my favorite brunch spots. They have an amazing mushroom gravy which is also vegetarian. They have oatmeal bowls which look amazing. And you have to try the French toast! It is my absolute fave. They also have some really good hot cocktails :) I will be back. They also do have milk alternatives for your coffee. read more

During COVID there is limited seating (6 tables out of the 8 are open), therefore the wait was for a little over an hour. But boy oh boy was the wait worth it. The food was delicious, servings are huge. I had the chocolate chip banana pancakes (2 which were bigger than my head). Because, it's such a small place the staff hold various positions (the servers are the hostess, bussers, answer phone orders...)--they were clearly doing a great job. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a place to have breakfast. Side note: the bathrooms were a little unkept, no seat covers.... read more

Their country fried steak blew every other country fried steak I've EVER had out of the water. It's almost an inch thick, cooked medium rare and smothered in their delectable gravy. My mouth is watering as I type this. Potatoes were yummy too, and employees were nice! read more

This place was recommended and well worth the trip. The food was so good. Especially the Fried chicken and vegetable gravy. The combination was so good. Our entire table agreed the very best. The food was worth the drive!! I had The Dalise omelette-meat lovers delight, the omelet 1/2 the size of a football, protein galore along with a heart attack on a plate. The flavors of the sausage, sweet grilled onions/peppers along with the gravy-OMG. Hash browned potatoes done right, I asked for them crispy and my waiter's response, as he's putting his pen away, "as they should be, right?" He wasn't kidding, golden brown all over, looks like they were cooked in a small cast iron skillet. And then, the French Toast- 2 monster thick slices of bread (get real maple syrup). I thought I was only going to have a bite and take the rest-yeah, right. I ate a whole slice and 1/2 the omelette. read more

It's a cute little diner, a little hidden between shops but you just have to keep an eye out! The hash brown wasn't seasoned, so it was obviously more on the bland side, but they offer salt and pepper. They offer you a very large portion for what you pay. We went here on a week day for breakfast which was a great choice cause it's super busy on the weekend. We definitely came with an appetite! We ordered a breakfast skillet, biscuits and gravy, and French toast. The biscuits and gravy were my favorite and the French toast was my husbands favorite. It has a classic diner feel that I really liked. The coffee was good and the service was even better! read more
