Walked in on a cloudy Saturday morning. There was no line but the place was full. Atmosphere was calm, ambience was very cozy. This hidden gem in a residential area has so much character. Enjoyed my vanilla latte - it complemented our grilled cheese panini and a single Belgian waffle with homemade chocolate syrup. The best part of our brunch was the truffle Mac and Cheese. Michael and I had brunch on Denman then decided we needed a really good coffee. I hadn't been yet but my friend Susan had told me that Greenhorn had the best coffee in the area so we decided to check it out. We almost didn't make it - we circled the area for 20 minutes looking for a spot and finally decided to park illegally in the alley adjacent. The atmosphere is fantastic and the energy was high. Customers engaged in computers, knitting or each other; the staff hustling to fill brunch orders. We took our lattes on the small enclosed and heated patio and Michael surprised me with a chocolate covered salted caramel. The latte was fantastic and mixed with the chocolate was a perfect way to come off a 4 week sugar hiatus - decadent! My first visit at this coffee shop in downtown Vancouver. Great interior design. Great baked goods. Coffee was above average. I ordered a cappuccino, a regular latte and a latte with almond milk. All of them were great and tasted smooth except that they were not too hot. A lot of students or young adults liked to stay at the cafe for a long time. Okay so I didn't really like this place.. my boyfriend and I ordered the breakfast skillet. He loved it, I wasn't a fan. It didn't taste like much and the portion was tiny and it was over priced. $35 for 1 coffee and 2 tiny breakfast skillets is too much. They were like $15 each after we added avocado, defining not worth it. I would only go back bc my boyfriend would want to and I would try the Benedict but I also saw someone else eating it while we were there and that portion looked tiny too. I am on the road for work quite a bit, zipping around the city from job to job, and every time I'm anywhere near the Greenhorn I swing by for a London Frog and a Ham & Cheese Croissant. Now, I'm reluctant to write this review because i'd prefer to never run into a situation where the they run out and cannot fulfil my order, but it would be selfish of me not to share. The London Frogs are good, like really good, but they are overshadowed by the delectable heavenly gooey goodness of the Ham & Cheese Croissant. Honestly, it is life changing. The boyfriend and I are on a quest for Vancouver's best espresso. We've been to all the favorites: Revolver, Matchstick, Kafka, Parallel, Elysian, Nelson, etc -- several times each. Greenhorn has stolen the crown from Elysian...for now! This place is great - it's a perfect hidden gem in West End. It has a gorgeous interior, and on top of doing solid espresso, they have what seems like a solid breakfast and lunch menu. We happened to meet the owner, Walter, while we were in and he told us of plans to open the space up more, get an awning and really make it a great place to enjoy the spring and summer sun (when it comes back!). Love that it is so nearby and can't wait to try some of their food! Protip - There is a super cute store next door that does really neat textiles and graphic design. And they love dogs! :) read more

Greenhorn Espresso Cafe Vancouver located on a quiet corner of Nicola Street and Nelson. I was first attracted to this independent coffee shop because of its decor and record collection. Getting to Greenhorn coffee shop wasn't exactly easiest with multiple one-way, no exit and the business of Vancouver downtown. But it was worth the inconvenience. I liked that Greenhorn has a pretty extensive coffee menu (espresso, macchiato, cortado, cappucino etc.); in addition to food options such as baguette, sandwiches, salads and Belgian waffles. Cappucino. I loved the coffee bean Greenhorn Espresso Cafe uses. It is dark, earthy and robust. Unlike some independent espresso bars that shift towards acidic tasting coffees. It's all about personal tastes. I prefer the taste of earthy and nuttiness of java. I love the crema from this cappucino. It had the perfect temperature and very smooth. On sunny day, this would be perfect on the patio. Vietnamese Iced Coffee: Although it looks like a pretty small glass for 4.50. Looking at the size, you may probably feel underpoured! Typical pho restaurant gives you twice the size for 3 bucks! However, there is a lot of caffeine that you do not realized. I don't want you to stare at the ceiling into the morning! My boyfriend and I were in need of a caffeine fix after meandering through Stanley Park this past Sunday. Found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I had an Americano and he had an iced latte. Both were decent, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. The cafe does seem like a neighbourhood gem (it was extremely busy in the late afternoon) and I think I'd love it more if I lived in the West End; it has a nice, homey feel to it. Brunch plans took us to The Greenhorn Cafe today. Right in the middle of the West End, you don't expect to find a proper hipster cafe but we did. Greenhorn is as hip and minimalist as any place you'd find in Gastown. They have a delicious pastry selection of croissants and danishes. We ordered up some spinach quiches, grilled cheese with feta and roasted tomatoes, and Belgian waffle with dark chocolate. I usually don't love dark roast coffee but theirs was deliciously drinkable. Greenhorn has a great neighbourhood vibe, I just wish I lived closer! I'd stop in, smell the fresh flowers and admire the pretty vintage bicycles in the back. The good part about living downtown is that I can walk to Gastown, Yale Town, Denman Street, Davie Village, Chinatown, and even Kitsilano for coffee. I've been to do many coffee cafes in this city. This place has a wonderful menu. They try to source locally. The menu has items that can help satisfy those fussy diets. If you are a tourist and want to feel the unique ambience of the West End in the Denman-Robson neighborhood, try Greenhorn. Greenhorn is snuggled up into the neighborhood among the older apartment buildings & homes, boulevard gardens and towering trees. It is unlikely that a tourist would pick this cafe as a destination. The coffee is excellent for my tastes, and the food menu changes enough to keep me from becoming bored. Downside: Not all that much seating. This is not a place to spread out and take up a table with your computer and claim residency. Yes, there is free wifi. I believe wifi is shut off on weekends. Honestly, this is a quaint place, that uses its available space for customers. That being said, understand that seating areas are limited. Came here with my bf on a Friday afternoon. My bf really liked this place because it was located in the middle of the neighborhood so he like that sorta thing. Cafe was very homey and cute. Very friendly neighborhood as well with lots of doggies walking by!! :D My bf had a mocha with soy milk while I had an iced americano. We also shared a braised beef au jus dip sandwich and a homemade carrot cake. The sandwich was so delicious. The french baguette was warmly toasted, and the braised beef was so flavorful and tender. I liked the sandwich on its own because the dipping sauce was way too watery for me but my bf loved the sauce. As for the carrot cake, it wasn't bad but I prefer the carrot cake from Koffie (downtown) because it had more of that carrot flavor, and it had cream cheese icing on top and in between they layers. This carrot cake, however, was quite dark in color so you couldn't see the shredded carrots inside and it had this zesty glazed icing instead which I didn't like but the cake was very very moist. This cafe was not here when I used to live in the West End. There was nothing as cool and dare I say it? "As hip" as there is now. A friend had kept telling us about how great this place is for a coffee and for their wild mushroom baguette sandwich. Why can't we have cool hip coffee shops that make their own food? Serve it up with cool hip staff and play funky town music that is uh, hip and uh, cool! Ok maybe my age getting through and showing signs of how uncool I just am. I can say one thing. I'm not alone when I say this is worth going to. Especially if you live in the neighbourhood. How can you not drop by and enjoy a snack and drink? The only downside to this place is the shared bathroom. Upstairs I really like the nook by the window where you can have a coffee by yourself and contemplate on life with Java stops like this. The long wooden table to be shared and hopefully with conversation with others. So all the bevvies are as good as can be. The food is something else. Just as good but it seems like they make it their way with a twist. The ham and cheese croissant was nifty special. Lots of cheese and hunks of ham in a flaky crispy and tender croissants. The quinoa salad, a bit sweet for my liking but a definite worthy must try if you like the healthier side of life. And of course M's dish that she recommended is the mushroom baguette. Maybe a bit heavy on the mayo but I loved it. An almost foodgasm exploded in my mouth as I took a bite, the mayo squeezed out the other side of the baguette! Oh my! That was good. As I am sitting in the Café, I watch in horror as customers of the Greenhorn park illegally out front of the café -of course the world revolves around such people (or so they think). The Greenhorn takes zero responsibility for customers that park illegal to simply get a coffee. Sounds petty, I know. But the fact is that the Greenhorn is right next to a firehall and customers that park illegally for the Greenhorn impede the fire trucks from getting past the illegal parkers. I just love watching ignorant customers go flying out of the Greenhorn as their vehicle is blocking the path of a screaming fire truck laying on it's deafening horn because that can't get by a blocking vehicle. It's the highlight of my visits to the Greenhorn -sipping my coffee and watching the ignorant customers. If bars can post signs about leaving their bars and respecting the neighbours by being quiet, I think the VERY LEAST the Greenhorn can do is also post a sign telling patrons to not park illegally to get their coffee. As the very most they can refuse service to those that jeopardize the lives of others in burning building. GREENHORN YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. read more

Greenhorn Espresso Cafe is a really good cafe to drop by that's off the beaten path and away from all the tourism and ruckus of the city. Situated in the middle of Vancouver suburbia, it was an interesting find. Seems like all the locals come here. Lots of space to meet with friends on a lazy weekend. This is a nice spot with a pretty sweet view of Nicola Street if you sit out front or at the window bar. Seating inside is not particularly spacious, and the cafe can fill up quick on a weekend. Coffee offerings are pretty solid and staff is friendly. I only go 4 instead of 5 because it is a little pricey across the board and because the crowding makes coming here to relax over coffee an occasional problem. Still, you can see why it's popular. My cappuccino was unrecognizable as such and so bitter and burnt I had to disguise it with sugar and milk. I know it probably is harder to create foam with soy but I expected at least some foam. I have never seen coffee the colour of mine. My friend's coffee was also very strong.
