One of our most favorite Italian places overall, and a go to when we're in Carlsbad! I don't think we've ever had anything that was bad. Food was delicious! Service was kind of odd in the beginning. It was cold out but we couldn't get a working heater and it took about 20 minutes before someone actually came to fix it. Our server brought us bread but we had 5 people and only 4 pieces of bread so we immediately asked for more. We never got a water refill even though we had empty glasses. I had the Chianti to pair with the baked ziti, which was great. And their happy hour has some great deals. One of the greatest joys in my life has been walking around in a city far from home--be it Rome or Paris or Helsinki or Marrakech or Adelaide or Singapore--and finding an ordinary-looking place to eat that is family-owned and that serves wonderful food. They are out there. So many restaurants in California these days are corporate things. Even restaurants that I like a lot can have 8 or 12 or 20 locations and probably a CEO. Gregorio's is the kind of place that I would be delighted to stumble across in Rome or Naples or Florence. It's not a chain. It is operated by its owners. It serves food that is made the way the owners want to make it, and not the way the Food section of big newspapers say it should be made. I love it. My wife believes that their spaghetti with meatballs is the best restaurant version she has ever eaten. I am partial to the Chicken Piccata and their pizza (especially the pear/gorgonzola pizza and the house ("Gregorio's") pizza. I don't love everything they serve--I haven't eaten everything they serve--but I love what I love and it's enough to bring me back. Oh, also I LOVE the tomato soup. It's probably enough all by itself to bring me back. It's on the 2nd floor above the UPS Store. We came into the relatively empty restaurant with reservations and were given the worst two person table in the restaurant while couples with no reservations got nice 4 person tables. The waitress was nice and service was adequate. The fried calamari was the frozen ring type and was passable but super salty. ($20) The Halibut(catch of the day) was $40 and small square cut pieces that was served on a small skewer. The sausage Cacciatore was pizza sausage thin slices with small shell pasta in a overly thick red sauce(too much tomato paste) and was just plain bad. We skipped desert naturally. Meeting friends from Carlsbad for a casual dinner. Party of 10. And we would only dine outdoors (COVID cautious). Gregorio's would reserve a table on the patio for us until 5:30. Not a problem, we could make that work. Besides, that got us there for Happy Hour. Even better! Pamula, our server, was at the table right away to get our drink orders. She then brought fresh bread - more than enough for our large party. She provided spectacular service throughout the meal despite having to juggle at least one other large party on the patio. We started the meal with spinach and artichoke dip appetizer on the HH menu ($12). It came with sliced cucumber and carrots on the side. But I liked it better with their bread. I also got a draft IPA beer on the HH menu ($6). For our main course, we shared a large pizza with mushroom, sausage, and extra cheese ($28). Wow, was that good pizza! The bread they brought out for an appetizer was so soft on the inside but nice and crisp on the outside The portions are huge and the everything I had was so good!!!! Squash ravioli is one of my favorite dishes so I always order if it's available. Ravioli was a really big size but the pasta itself felt really slimy. I ate one and couldn't get myself to eat the rest of it. My so got the Sicilian chicken. The pasta on the side with the vodka sauce was good. But the chicken was dry and tasteless. It looked like it would be well seasoned. He ate half and I had a small piece. I'm assuming they're understaffed since our server did nit come back after she checked on us when the food arrived. I had to flag down another server to ask for the check. She asked us if we wanted boxes and I said no. She just took the plates with all that food still in it and didn't even ask how the food was. It's been a few years since I dined at Gregorio's. My husband and I had a spontaneous date nights and decided we were in the mood for some Italian and ended up at Gregorio's. We had an awesome night! I ate the Shrimp Fra Diavlo! The sauce was the perfect amount of spicy and delicious! The portion was perfect for having lunch left overs the next day! My husband had the Gorgonzola chicken and broccoli fettuccine. I had a few bites and the sauce was creamy and yummy! The pasta was cooked well in both dishes. We both had the Gregorio's Rose which was a crisp and flavorful glass of wine. We shared a Ceasar salad and some cheese bread. The salad was big and the bread pretty soft. New Year's Eve dinner plans with friends were very nicely accommodated. We had reservations at 8pm and we were seated shortly. Food was a bit slow to arrive, but we had breads and drinks to sustain us. Garlic cheese bread was very good- very heavy on the garlic. Everyone's food was delicious. We all also agreed that the scallop risotto was the best option ! It was the freshest scallops and cooked perfectly that it almost melts in your mouth! The chicken in the Sicilian chicken was crispy and delicious. I think I had the least exciting dish this night - the clams were not "whole" clams, but chunks (like tuna). As a longtime visitor I'm very disappointed with my recent visit. While the food and service were good. It was the receipt that I found to be an insult. Went there with my family last night and the evening was a mixed bag for me. First the good. The service was outstanding and I loved the large antipasta salad type thing it was ordered chopped by my mother who enjoys going to Gregorio's regularly. The vibe is also very good...A high, positive energy bar surrounded by many tables with lovely outdoor seating perched on the second story of a shopping/entertainment complex. My kids loved the place but have not yet grown to be the demanding foodie that I am. I ordered the fettuccine with chicken, broccoli and Gorgonzola. The pasta was way over cooked and the Gorgonzola cream sauce was quite bland. My wife ordered the scallops with risotto and the risotto (admittedly hard to pull off in a restaurant setting) was over cooked. My mother ordered one of their signature dishes, chicken piccata, and it too looked over cooked. A lot about this place makes it a great restaurant to visit. But they need to focus more on the products coming out of their kitchen. I would absolutely be back time and again for the antipasta and a glass of wine. read more

To make it so worth it was the warm bread served w balsamic and oil. Friend got a meatball sandwich which she shared w another as the meatballs were huge(4 of them). Other two had shrimp and chicken salad and that was great too. I couldn't resist the cappacino and it was piping hot which I love and soooyummy. No room for dessert but we all left satisfied. It was quite there too and we sat for awhile visiting and it wasn't a concern and we never felt like we were rushed out. Very mixed. Cold non-italian ambiance, but balanced with a catering and friendly staff. Fresh bread and attempts at making a good sauce but with zero flavor. Their kid's pizza had zero flavor but looked great, and their pastas are all at least around $30 or more for pasta dishes that had zero authenticity and zero flavor. As an Italian I can't imagine charging that much unless it's important from Tuscany, Emilia Romana, or Sicily. And did I mention zero flavor. The chicken parm sandwich was decent but with a very thin slice of chicken. I suppose the minimum wage in California is driving restaurants to charge more and provide less, but that shouldn't affect spices for sauces so no excuse for that. Won't go again. There really is no ambience. The outdoor seating has nice lights? I guess? But the view is a burger shop and the road. And then the prices... holy smokes, looking at the menu ahead of time, I could believe this was a fancy place, but being there and looking at the menu made me want to jump ship and go somewhere else. That being said, the food was decent. The drinks were good, but I was definitely disappointed there was no mention of my wife's birthday or us just getting married. All in all, the spinach dip and the lemonade were the favorites of the night. I wouldn't come back on my own, but if someone invited me I wouldn't say no.
