This is a good neighborhood bar. There is ample parking split between the parking lot and the street. Make sure not to park on the north side or if looking at the entrance, the right side parking lot...you will get towed, it is not owned by Griff's. There is really nothing fancy about Griff's...its sort of a dive bar. We went there to watch the BCS Bowl and had a great time. Had plenty of TV's to view the game from wherever you sat. The place was packed, but probably would have been less packed if the game wasn't on and it wasn't so cold outside....they have 2 patios outdoor sitting. The kitchen seemed to be short staffed since it took a hour to get our food, but they tried to keep us happy with free Jello shots (who can say no to free jello shots) and constantly asking if we needed anything to drink. They seemed to have a good variety of beers/liquor....we got a few shots and they were not stingy on the amount poured. When the food did come out, it seemed that everyone enjoyed there meals, one of my friends order was wrong, they immediately fixed it without any hassle. I ordered the philly cheesesteak, it was good, but would have preferred just a tad bit more meat in it. Others ordered the hotdog combo, wings, and the Megan grill cheese. We had a good time watching the game there...people were friendly...staff was great. Will go back to try their Tuesday Steak night. Group of about 10 of us went to Griff's on Tues (12/30) for their Steak night. The steaks were good. Only one person had an issue with the way steak was prepared and she got another steak. HOWEVER, we did not feel welcomed at all. All ten of us were forced to sit at a table for 6, b/c they would not allow us to put 2 tables together. So as one person finished eating, someone would stand to allow another person to sit down to eat.... At some point a guy yelled out "WHITE PEOPLE!" Really?!?!?!? There are TV's to watch sports, but I noticed a sign on the juke box that said no music during the game... This particular night there were no games on. There was no TV sound nor any music playing. This is the type of place that has their regulars but definitely does not welcome any new business to their bar. I WON'T BACK. I'm sure they'll be happy about that! read more

Been here a handful of times now and while it's not my first choice for drinks, I can count on Griff's for good service and afford-ability (watch for specials on the [nifty] color-changing board behind the bar). The food's ok, too. Seriously, can't wait to try the a** burn flavor wings! Haha, yeah, the menu will crack you up. Read it. So, it's kind of dark inside. I can tell the decor is old, but I can't see it all. They have a clover made out of red bull cans hanging on the wall near the bar which is pretty cool looking. There are also a buttload of tvs with several different sports channels on. Other than that though... it's pretty dark and a bit stuffy. I only stay inside to order then I make my way to the back patio which is much larger than the front one, much brighter. Last night was NBA finals so they had a tv outside with the game on. The outdoor furniture doesn't look too stable, but it's held up thus far on all my visits. Overall an ok place and I'm sure I'll make several more appearances. Then, before you know it... So Griff's isn't exactly my cup of tea. Though I do love a good dive bar (a la Lola's Depot, Kay's Lounge) Griff's is just a shade too grimy for me. Rather, the light is a touch too bright for the level of grime here. Still, after a few mintues it's easy to settle in. I've only come here for trivia. Not my favorite because there are basically no pop culture questions, rendering me close to useless. What I do like are the jello shots for all, and you call it round of drinks (shots are the way to go) if you place. There are also free nachos for trivia players. Oh, and the beer is pretty cheap. And there are old TVs playing the relevant sports games. The first time our service was ok; the second time it was great. If invited back, I would return, but I doubt I'd recommend it to a friend. read more

Let me preface this by saying THIS IS A DIVE BAR! Don't even bother if you're looking for spotless bathrooms and a clean floor. If you want a toilet seat you can feed your child off of, take a 5 minute walk to Midtown and hang out there. I absolutely love this place. Yes, it kinda smells sometimes. And yes, the clientele are pretty rough around the edges, but I love it. Some of the best chicken wings I've had since moving from Buffalo, and just a really good overall atmosphere. Only reason this place doesn't get five stars is their pricing. If you pay cash for each drink, you're good. If you start a tab, there's really no rhyme or reason for what they charge. It's usually not bad, but occasionally they hit you with a tab that may be higher than expected. Random notes on my adventures at Griffs: 1. The owners are ridiculous and crazy, but they hand out shots like candy. I bought them a round of mini beer shots one time and I've been drowning in free shots ever since 2. Well, it's pretty much a dive, but it's a Houston institution of sorts. It's sort of a sports bar, sort of a bar & grill (with hit or miss food - sometimes suprisingly good, sometimes borderline inedible), but mostly just a dark & dank drinking establishment. Went here for the Texas Tech bowl pregame happy hour. I've been here in the past, but only for Texas Tech football games, as it is the unofficial watch party. We're big fans of Griff's Steak Night - the best in town! One of these evenings I'm gonna skip the steak. The steaks are outstanding - but the baked potatoes are world class. This review isn't about Steak Night, it's about hamburgers at lunch. Unbelievable. Classic Texas-style burger, best-in-class fries and tots. Priced below market. And the service! Last night was not the best night for me! I was invited to meet up with some friends who were at Griffs for the kick off of their week long St. Patty's day celebration. They had a pageant that was apparently pretty interesting but unfortunately I missed it. There was also a guy walking around playing the bagpipe which I thought was awesome! While I was enjoying the music and festivities someone comes in announcing that cars were being towed so I walk outside to find that I was one of the victims. I've been towed before and it is always irritating but the lack of signage was what got me. There was one sign that wasn't in eye shot of where I parked and another that was covered. So we go find the owner to see if she has any pull or even knows where the vehicles have been towed. She wasn't much help considering she was hammered. Always professional. At this point I decide to make the best of it and just get another drink and wait for my car to get to the lot. I order a vodka and soda and the 18 year old bartender proceeds to pour 2 oz of vodka into and 16 oz plastic cup which she then fills to the brim with soda water. What the hell? I literally said, "Are you serious?" So she then gives me the typical, "You can pay more for a double" to which I respond, "I didn't order a tall!" So I inform her that I have been bartending for 6 years and now manage a bar and have NEVER seen a more embarrassing pour. Needless to say, I then ordered a beer. Nothing makes me more irate than a weak pour. If the drinks were stronger (aka normal) and the parking lot isn't occupied by a large tent, I'd probably hit this place up again. It reminds me of the hole-in-the-wall bars I used to frequent in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. read more

DONT GO THERE! So I go to Griffs and walk in the door and someone asks for me to put on mask. I noticed no one in the place had a mask on except the waiter and bartender. My mask had a broken string but the people I was meeting were literally 6 feet from door. I just quickly went to the table and sat down and ordered a drink. The owners "twins" were sitting behind me and I turned around and told them that my mask was broken but I had one. They went on a 5 minute rampage about me bothering them, crazy right??? Now I am sitting with a table with 3 people and myself, no one wearing masks. The waiter tells me I have to leave. Don't really know why and then someone at the table I did not know also says I need to leave. Okay, so I get up and go to the bar to pay for my drink and a guy at the bar tells me I have to leave. He is not wearing a mash but is sitting down in a chair. I guess that makes him safe..... This is a small bar filled with angry alcoholics. I didn't do anything but walk 6 feet to a table in a bar where no one was wearing a mask. I had been to this bar on many occasions, but I had apparently entered the twilight zone. They also threw out my girlfriend and told here to never come back........ She has been a customer there for many 6 years. read more

I am a huge fan of Griff's. I met the owner one night and we had a great 30 minute conversation. They have giant Jenga outside and a couple of nice pool tables on the inside. They have great daily specials. Friday you can buy a 6-pack of lonestar for $10. Steak night on Tuesdays are great as well. read more

Ew. Met up with some friends here last night to have a cold one and play some trivia. Place was packed, as to be expected. But it is fuh-freezing in there. Feels like you're siting in a walk-in freezer. Super uncomfortable. My nips can only handle standing at attention for so long. But worst of all, the owner is an old hag. She was so snotty to me. On a good day I wouldn't have been offended so badly, but you sit me in a freezer that smells like dead bodies that's posing as a bar and then tell me I can't have my French fries because your deep fryer is suddenly broken, I'm annoyed. I don't know where she gets off acting like some sort of royalty when she owns a shit hole bar, but she needs to fall the frank back. And by the way, hag, you should never wear that green shirt again. You looked like the animated boogers from the mucinex commercial. Not a good look. I left here feeling like I needed a shower to wash the filth of the place from my skin and hair. We held my husband's Surprise 70th Birthday at Griff's because that was our hangout when we went to UST in the 60's. It hasn't changed much over all those years! It was so fun re-connecting with our Houston friends again and Griff's back porch was the perfect place to do it. All of our guests commented on the yummy food! Matt the manager and the owners were wonderful to work with! From the moment I contacted Matt until the end of the surprise party, the service was top notch! They even decorated for me!! I've given this place enough chances but I've finally come to the conclusion this place is just a haven for a**holes and condones a gang-like mentality among the regulars. I've gone alone and with friends maybe 5 or 6 times now and on 3 of those occasions I've had to defend myself against regulars here who have gone out of their way to throw verbal jabs and insults. Only willing to take so much, I've responded a few times and things almost got physical. If you count the things one girl threw at my head, it did get physical. Anyhow, after responding to one of the harassers and calling a spade a spade, I was asked to leave immediately because of my language towards her, full beer and all. Griff's is a great neighborhood bar (even if you have to drive 30 minutes to get to the neighborhood, as I do). The staff is great and the food can't be beat. The Tuesday steak night is awesome. There are enough TV sets to see all the sporting events at the same time (or at least the ones you are interested in at the time). My friend and I come here every Tuesday for their steak!!!!!! It's so damn good! Comes with beer and loaded potatoes. I will say that recently the rib eye has not been as flavored as it usually is. On Tuesday, they offer a 16 oz ribeye, a loaded baked potato, and a domestic beer for the price of $10. The ribeye really is 16 oz unlike some of the places that claim to serve steaks that large. It is a much fattier cut of meat than the steaks offered at Little Woodrows (West Alabama), FPP, Onion Creek, or Tavern. The seasoning has a faint sweet taste that can either be appealing or annoying depending on the consumer. The baked potato was piping hot, and Griff's offers a communal wheel for their patrons. Toppings offered are standard: butter, sour cream, bacon bits, green onions, and cheese. The addition of a domestic beer is an added plus. Overall, in terms of taste, Griff's did not measure up to FPP, however, it certainly is a better "value". Also, for the Italian girls, not much truth to the rumors that many Italians hang out here on Tuesdays.
