A good hot pot spot conveniently located near Union Square. They put your purses and coats in plastic bins which was interesting, but probably smart as it keeps them from soaking up the smells of the restaurant. The menu was a bit overwhelming for us so we just picked one of their set menus, which was perfect, as it let us try a few different types of meat and we didn't have to worry about how many things to order. It was probably still too much food for the two of us, but it was a good proxy. The meat seemed to be good quality for the price and there were a lot of little sauces and sides to get from the bar in the back. We had a mushroom broth and a spicy broth, which was a good contrast, and both flavorful in different ways. The food options were good but I did feel that should have been more options for fish balls like most other places...no regular fishballs, no cuttlefish balls, no fuzhou style meat stuffed fishballs. Only fish ball with roe, which were good. Veggie selection was solid, good choices available. Meat selection also solid, good variety to choose from in different price ranges. The only thing I will say that was extremely surprising and disappointing is that they charged close to $3pp for the sauce station. I have never been to a hotpot place that does this. My friend and I ordered the mini hot pots, which come as individual servings of hot pot with a broth and mix of meat + veggies. These were very filling and I was satisfied. Next time I would opt for the large typical size for hotpot, sharing my feedback below. - Bc they are individual pots, they each come on its own small burner. We had some issues turning it back on once we turned them off. - Since we each had our own burners, there is VERY limited space on the table when getting the mini pots and it was awkward to eat. Barely room for our plates + any additional food/drink we ordered AND the mini pot. If we used the main hot pot in the center of the table, we would not hve that issue. - The mini pots come with a preselected set of meat and veggies. Both pots my friend and I ordered included a LOT of tripe/stomach(?) meat that my friend and I did not eat (we don't typically eat this and frankly it looked unappetizing to us). If we went with the large pot, we would just not have ordered that type of meat. A lot of the minor inconveniences I had with the experience attributed to the mini hot pots and not necessarily with the food quality or experience itself, so I'll leave it at 4 stars. I simply recommend going with the typical hot pot experience when dining here. read more

I think this location in Manhattan opened relatively recently :0 There's usually a pretty long queue at the branch in Flushing, so I was relieved when my friend and I were quoted ~5-10 minute wait time when we got there around 6:30 on a weekday. For the soup base broth you can choose a pot with 1/2/3 "options" (e.g. different broths), and it was very funny to us that the 1-broth pot costs more than the 2-broth option but less than the 3-broth one?? maybe someone can explain what the pricing logic is here haha We opted for the two-broth pot with pork rib and tomato, and they were both sooo good! Honestly the pork rib broth was one of the highlights of the meal; it was so fragrant and not too salty that we drank a lot of it at the end of our meal. Delicious Despite being one of the cheaper options, the "premium beef slices" (精品肥牛) were our favourite meat option. Other than that, we loved the sweet potato noodles (ended up getting a few orders of this after scarfing them down super quickly). Veggies were fresh and tasty across the board. I also really liked the ice cream at the end of the meal hehe, and the sauce bar w some sweet desserts was also a nice touch to round everything out. Even though we were both quite full, dessert goes into a separate stomach so we still enjoyed some jelly on top of the ice cream. Overall price point was solid! Definitely not cheap, but I think the quality and quantity of the food make the cost worthwhile, and I think had we come with even more people it would have been even more reasonable (IMO hot pot gets much more efficient with larger groups of people). While there are so many hot pot spots in NYC, I found Shoo Loong Kan is not like the other chains. The restaurant is exceptionally clean, bright and modern. Their service is 100% attentive and caring. There is a storage space under your chair to keep the hot pot smell out of your belongings and coats (so thankful for this design). If you ever step foot into an Asian Supermarket and go to the hot pot section for some DIY hot pot, there's a few brand names that's available for purchase: Haidilao, Happy Lamb, and then there's Shoo Loong Kan. They all have their own restaurants as well. Unfortunately, Haidilao and Happy Lamb are both in Flushing, which is a super far trek not worth going out of the way just for hot pot. Luckily Shoo Loong Kan decided to open their location in Manhattan in the heart of Union Square, making this a convenient location for me and my Manhattan folks. I came here with my fiancee during the winter when I learned this location existed. Reservations is highly recommended, otherwise there's a waitlist available. They have trash bags available to put your jacket or any other stuff you don't want to get stinky from the hot pot. Their sauce station is a bit overwhelming with various selections. Food is ordered via iPad and they have a huge selection, including high quality meat and seafood. There's a nice veggie selection as well. Very interesting, exciting atmosphere. I wish we were given a rundown of how things work here when we first are instead of being left to figure out with the iPad. There are all these things you can get with loyalty points (ingredients and even electronics), but we Couldn't get a sense of how to sign up or how any of it works. We didn't know there was a sauce station that is $2.99 per person and unlimited until after I used the bathroom, I came out and saw the station and asked about it. For $19.99 you can get one, two or three kinds of broths. After ordering on the iPad, the ingredients came out extremely quickly, Followed by the broths. Our favorite was the pork rib broth Which had dates and goji. It was excellent and had a lot of flavor. The mushroom broth was good, saltier and not as nuanced as pork rib. We also got the spicy broth (mild) And it was crazy hot. We asked if we were given a spicier version by accident, but the waitress said that was the mild. She was very nice and scooped out the peppers and added more broth to water it down for us. The ingredients were fresh and good. And the sauces were good too. Liked that they offered grass jelly and fruits. After tax and tip we spent a little more than $50 per person for a two person party. We were full. And they gave us Hershey ice cream after. read more

I was wrong, wagyu DOES belong at the hot pot table. Wow, it was so good and tender and flavorful and rich. This is an a-la-carte place but the ingredients and offerings feel very elevated and worth it to try for the price. Portion sizes are decently large (in a good way). The house special chili broth is quite spicy, even at mild. I preferred the pork rib broth, which was very flavorful and not too heavy, and it paired with everything. The handmade noodles were nicely chewy and one order is good for two people in my opinion. I also recommend the house special tripe, which also has a nice texture and consistency, and is wider and larger than the standard tripe they have. Fish roe ball was also one of our favorites - the filling is super flavorful and has lots of roe. I definitely recommend trying the milk mochi, such a huge portion and the perfect dessert. Brown sugar rice cake was also yummy, crispy outside with a nice chewy inside. Service is very attentive. They provide aprons for you and also help you pack up any leftovers (I haven't been to a hot pot place yet that let's you take home leftovers). Everything in the restaurant also felt very clean, from the sauce bar to the restrooms. Overall, Shoo Loong Kan has now made it's way onto my radar as an elevated and luxurious hot pot spot, and the crowds are there to prove it. read more

I do not have a spice tolerance at all, but my friends that do like spice said the less spicy was spicy -Premium beef slices: Very awesome! good quality and very easy to chew. -Wagyu shoulder: You could see the nice marbling on the meat, and it was rather tender. I love wagyu -Diced wagyu: I think I liked the shoulder better just because there was more meat in one bite. Still very tasty! -Quail Eggs: I LOVE QUAIL EGGS. I like this hotpot place as I have been to a different location so this review is for the service. I called ahead to check if there was a wait time on a rainy day for a party of 2. I called just 30 minutes ahead of when I was arriving and the lady who picked up said it shouldn't be a problem. I get there and there is a freaking wait of other TEN other groups of people. This is so misleading and leaves a bad taste in my mouth from the lack of transparency. If she was just honest we would NOT have trekked all the way here in the rain because we are NOT looking to wait over an hour in the rain for a table. I don't know if she was lying to drive business or what but this is so frustrating. We tried waiting for over FORTY minutes with NO movement and just gave up. And I tried to ask how long of a wait it was and she kept telling me 3 tables were finishing up and it should be around 20 minutes but FORTY minutes later we are not even close. She should have just told us to leave and come back another time at that point. Her name started with an A and I hate her guts. BE HONEST. It's not hard. Update: our table was called 1 hour and 10 minutes later after A lied and said it would be about 20 minutes.
