The butterfish was a revelation. A buddy recommend I try the food here, and I was blown away by how good cooked fish could be. I personally prefer raw fish to cooked fish, but it might just be the quality of the fish I grew up eating. I saw that the butterfish was recommended, and I was consequently blown away. Fish is famously fatty/oily, but butterfish lives up to its name. Sweet, savory, fatty -- all good things. The guava slushy was tasty, but I drank through mine way too quickly. I would have gotten a refill, but I am balling on a budget. There's plenty of seating inside and outside. The food was filling, and perhaps extra satisfying knowing that the restaurant uses invasive strawberry guava wood for their smoking their meat (hence the name of the restaurant). The guys working here were extra kind, and gave me free fried rice for to-go.

Lunch in Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawai'i... When Roz set up a get together with Kim, who was visiting from San Diego, I was really happy! Not only did I not have to plan the meeting, but also, they selected a venue that I've always wanted to try... Guava Smoked. I have been to the Kalihi location, so I knew that had good food! This Kapahulu location was great because there's a small, free, shared parking lot and a convenient restroom! The service was efficient and very friendly and helpful! I forgot about the elevator that someone wrote about in their review. I climbed the stairs carefully to the second floor where, surprisingly, it's decorated pleasantly! There's no air-conditioning... just open doors and windows. We sat in a comfy booth. Kim ordered a side of Smoked Duck for us to share. It was ok. She was able to take the leftovers home to her family. I got the Combo Plate that comes with a side (I chose green salad - the dressing was quite tart!) and two scoops of hapa rice (brown and white mixed together). My two meats were kalbi - it was alright - and the salmon belly - ooh! Very good! Overall, it was a wonderful experience... being together again, taking food photos, chatting, eating, and laughing! And we had a surprise guest: Ric C. Plus, we planned a UYE... check the Events Tab!

I want to update that the kalbi and the butterfish collar are so freakin' delicious and I wish I could eat it all the time. LOL I love how it's cut for you into bite-size pieces and portions are generous. The way that they cook it really makes a difference. I'm currently craving this right now... Another honorable mention is the salmon bellies omg. I could smash 40 of those. LOL So delicious. Parking is a little tricky but hopefully can find some street parking if the mini lot is full and just walk it. Service is quick and they bring your order to you. Utensils are on the counter where the napkins are. Ambiance is a very local/chill take-out spot but they have more than enough space to dine-in after you get your food.

Hamburger steak, not as tasty as it sounds. But that's what that thing is, covered in gravy. And delicious chicken plate.

Park in the back and walk up the stairs. This place was not as amazing as I hoped. But it definitely got the job done. The guy at the counter wasn't the most people person ever, but he also got the job done. Didn't get a photo of the guava cake brownie thing they have, but it was really yummy.

WHY WE WENT HERE: - dinner THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - located on the 2nd floor of a plaza off Kapahulu Ave and Campbell Ave - entrance to the the restaurant is accessed through the parking lot off Campbell Ave patio seating available overlooking Kapahulu Ave THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): - indoor seating is comprised of high chairs and tables or booth seating - order and pay at the register; help yourself to the drink fountain; seat yourself - single person restrooms THE MENU: - plate lunches - burgers & sandwiches - dessert - bowls - pupu bowls - frozen to go... WHAT WE ORDERED: - Smoked Chicken with Kahumana Greens - Spicy Smoked Pork with Kahumana Greens - Smoked Kalbi Short Ribs with Kahumana Greens - Guava Slush THE TASTE: - kahumana greens was essentially a side salad; the dressing was like a lemony/tangy ranch, pleasant surprise and good - smoked chicken was a bit dry, but almost like a teriyaki chicken - spicy smoked pork wasn't spicy, moreso peppery; this was pretty good - smoked kalbi short ribs were both tender and chewy and just a LOT of meat in general CUSTOMER SERVICE: - we came for dinner but this is definitely more of a lunch place

TL;DR The spicy pork is good. ----- I had Guava Smoked on my radar for quite a while, so when I found myself nearby and craving a protein-packed plate lunch, I decided to drop in. There is a dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant that is shared with the other businesses in the same building. When I walked into the restaurant at about 1pm on a Wednesday, I was surprised to find it almost empty. It's a pretty large space, so the lack of patrons was rather glaring. There was one person sitting at the counter facing the kitchen and one employee working. This was my very first visit to Guava Smoked so I asked the person at the counter what he recommends. He said the two most popular meats are the kalbi and the spicy pork. "Perfect!" I thought, because those were the two options I was eyeing. Unfortunately, they were out of kalbi that day. Bummer... Nothing else on the menu caught my eye, so I ordered a smoked spicy pork plate to go. The spicy pork was good. Did it blow my mind? I wouldn't say it did. But it was satisfying enough. Honestly, I really wish they had kalbi available when I went. Hopefully next time I stop in they will.

Food was amazing!! Place was a little hidden, upstairs - worth the search. Pork was so flavorful, smoked to perfection - we had to get more. The smoked salmon bites also delicious. Service was great- came to our table to check on us - he was thrilled to hear we ordered more. Only thing that would have made experience a little better - if they had their liquor license to have a couple beers.

Found this local gem thanks to a recommendation from our Lyft driver! It's a fantastic spot for authentic Hawaiian smoked meat just outside the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. The Food: We ordered the combination plate to try a bit of everything--chicken, pork, and kalbi short ribs. Every meat was perfectly marinated and paired beautifully with the kimchi. The kalbi was the absolute standout! The Logistics: Keep in mind that the entrance is tucked away at the back of the building (not the main road side) on the second floor. Parking is a small lot in the back or limited street options. The Service: I'm knocking off one star due to a somewhat grumpy experience with the gentleman taking orders. There was a mix-up with our meat selection, and while the server corrected it, the original staff member seemed visibly disgruntled and kept shaking his head at the mistake. Overall: A solid "hole-in-the-wall" find. Despite the service hiccup, the food is delicious enough that I'd definitely return when I'm back in the area. Mahalo!

Bamboozled beyond belief, in short the short ribs were way too fatty, service was good but food was over hyped and too fatty personally for me a little too Expensive and not worth it.

Got the Smoked Meat Chili from the Kapahulu Giava Smoked. I still prefer the chili from across Campbell Avenue but it was quite good. Service....worker in front of POS was on his phone for a good minute while I stood next to the POS at the entrance...curious how long it would take for him to ask me what I wanted to order.

Holy Hawaiian BBQ! I've been stalling on writing a review for this place for the longest time, simply because I have been greedy and wanting to keep this place all to myself. Plus, if you arrive to late in the evenings, they tend to sell out on some of their more popular items. I always order the combination plate - add any of the sides and you cannot go wrong. All of their meats are smoked to perfection. If we don't order it in our combo plates, we always get an additional kalbi order; my hubby insists! The spot can be a little difficult to locate. Parking in the back is extremely limited, but I just park across the street or find street parking. The stairs might look daunting, but there's an elevator if you're having limited mobility. Majority of the seating is high top, which I love, but can be problematic for some. There are booths that can fit 4 comfortably, but they are limited. Restrooms inside too. Don't leave before trying their guava bar!

Hidden hole in the wall. The entrance is located in the back of the building and upstairs. The parking is very small with maybe five stalls. Luckily I was able to get a spot. There are tables and high tops to sit yourself down. Nice ambiance, able to catch up with a friend. Food wise, I got the mild smoked pork plate. I was told this was the most popular item so I wanted to try it. The meat was tender and not dried out. The rice was soft. I chose kimchi for my side. It had a little bit of kick to it (a good thing). Overall good, I wish the meat itself had a little more flavor. But they had spicy sauce condiment and chili water on the side that you can add to your liking. Staff were very nice and helpful with recommendations. Would come back again!

This place was just two blocks away, so we braved the November misty rain and consistent wind through the buildings to make it over here. To be fair, this seemed more like a Vietnamese coffee joint and a Banh Mi place... so maybe coming here for pho wasn't our best idea. They had two kinds available that night-- beef and chicken. Since chicken pho is not something I'm willing to try, we both ordered up the dac biet. The broth was bland with a thin and unpleasant veil of grease along the top that congealed quickly on the rim of the bowl. It wasn't hot enough, or maybe the pre-cooked and chilled noodle block they poured it over cooled it off. Meat was chewy and low quality. The sprouts and basil were soggy and wilted. Honestly, it was a get up and leave kind of thing. The whole place was just dingy and didn't feel great. I've eaten at some very modest places in my native San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, so it's not a snobbery thing. I was so disappointed they no longer offer the lilikoi matcha- I know that flavor combination would've been amazing! Hopefully they bring it back someday. The matcha itself was on the lighter side compared to richer ceremonial matchas, but it was still smooth, well-balanced, and not at all astringent. It paired really well with the oat milk, and both drinks were enjoyable. There was a line out the door during breakfast/brunch hours, which shows just how popular this place is.
