Solid plate of food for the price! I got a smoked pork plate which came with pork, some mayo salad, and rice. My friend got the duck plate with kimchi and rice. The smoked pork reminded me of Vietnamese grilled pork chops but with less of a fish sauce flavor and more on the sweet side. I didn't try my friend's duck, but it was good according to her. The standout of this meal was surprisingly the kimchi. My friend got it as a little side, and it didn't look very special. The flavor was on point, though!!! Great spot for elevated Hawaiian "grinds". Is that what it's called? Lol. We got a mixed plate with butterfish collars and loco moco and added the fried rice. Everything was so delicious. Butterfish is black cod so can't go wrong there. And the loco moco white gravy was good. We had read some reviews saying the fried rice didn't have any flavour but that was def not the case as it was delicious. Solid spot for local plate lunch style! I love smoked meats, and this place didn't disappoint. Smoked Meat was delicious, two big scoops of rice, and Mac salad. Beef Stew was pretty good, but wish there was more meat. Interesting location with an upstairs entrance with plenty of tables inside and some seating outside overlooking the street. Wow this mac salad has some secret ingredient because we went back for round 2. The kalbi was fatty and just the right bite size. If you like smoked meats, this is your place. Actually it still hard to get used to the inflationary environment to proclaim that it's a "good" deal that their plates are in the mid teens range (no fault of the restaurant). Really like the aroma and open kitchen concept, come right in and you know what to expect. All we need is some good Hawaiian music (actually not a fan of that genre, you get the point). Smoked pork is quite tender and not too dry. Kim chee is on the gingery side, that's ok. It's a great place to bring your visitor friends not too far from Waikiki and avoiding the marked up prices. This was my first time here but it won't be my last. This is for the Kapahulu location. Driving up we got super lucky with getting a parking spot as the lot is super small and has like 5 stalls out front. Head up the stairs to the second floor and check out the menu. The owner was at the counter and greeted us and gave his recommendations, I was there to try the smoked guava pork. We also tried the fried rice bowl. This was a lot of food. The pork plate has two scoops rice, Mac salad and the pork. The fried rice bowl was so Flavorful and topped with green onions. You can substitute the rice on any plate for the fried rice! I would recommend doing that. Oh and the rice is hapa. That's a combination of white and brown rice together. The way that it's made is super sticky not dry , I love it! The service was fast and they bring out your food to the table. They have a soda machine and water available on the side. The menu is stacked with choices so I have to go back to try other options, like the smoked beef stew and kalbi short ribs or the smoked salmon belly. The inside of the restaurant is huge they have lots of tables and booths along the side. The food must have been good I even bought a T-shirt.. lol I would recommend not eating before you go so that you have room to try all the food here! We initially went to the front street, but it's located in the back on the side of the CBD building up the stairs. Glad I checked this place out the beef stew was good! The guava bar not so much barely had any guava in it and it was super dry. I prefer my bars to be a little bit more moist inside. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable! Meeting a friend for lunch she is on Keto and was craving for some Kalbi though due to some distribution issues sadly it was unavailable this visit. So we then decided on the Smoked Chicken Salad and subbed it for Salmon Belly which came with a creamy vinaigrette dressing and gosh it was yummy! The salad isn't tossed the dressing is on the side but wow that was a yummy sauce I couldn't get enough of it in fact my friend loved it so that she got extra and wished I did so too. On to the food, I had the mixed plate with chicken and kalbi, and she had the loco moco (spicy). Generally, on the mainland, smoked meats from restaurants have a really heavy smoky flavor, but here, it is ever so subtle and really adds to the flavor. Kalbi was tender and had that subtle smoke flavor that I would have never guessed would enhance the sweet and savory kalbi. Chicken was also tender fall of the bone. Dipped in some sambal for a little tangy kick and I literally ate the whole thing in 5 minutes. Also Mac salad was nice. Can't get that flavor back in Seattle. Gfs loco moco also was amazing. White gravy with perfectly cooked egg on top. Also that subtle smoky and spicy flavor really came through. She claimed , "best loco moco I've ever had". Lol. We finally made it to Guava Smoked today for takeout. I like that we live nearby. It's located on the second floor, but not a problem because there's also an elevator near the entrance. Because we were there at 4pm, there were a few empty stalls in the small parking lot. It's a great open air restaurant that looks perfect for a pau hana drink. We picked up the hamburger steak and spicy pork. I really like the smoked hamburger steak. There's a spicy option which is not overpowering and very enjoyable. I especially like the white gravy, a nice change from the usual brown gravy. The spicy pork had more of a kick with a little sweetness. We both got the salad option, which came with a very tasty creamy vinaigrette. Next time, we'll try the mac salad and kim chee. We also had a chance to try their smoked fried rice. It was nicely seasoned with chunks of smoked meat, very satisfying. There are so many items we will be ordering in the future, like smoked duck, beef stew, and kalbi ribs! So happy to be buying local with Guava Smoked. Enjoyed their smoked turkey this Thanksgiving. It was not as smoky as I've had at other spots (e g Willie Bird and Sams club) but still moist and tender. It also wasn't overly salty! I did have a small issue with the pickup location...apparently i mistakenly picked up at the wrong location but wasn't aware until after I got home but the folks were very understanding and I did pickup a smoked turkey. read more
