Worst French Onion soup I have ever tasted. It was the consistency of very thick gravy and flavorless. The Reuben sandwich was just meat and sauerkraut. Bread wasn't toasted. Same owners and tip policies as Babica Hen, which is ok by me. Tables in front are very pleasant, and we could see most of the sunset while we ate. Menu is pretty big, and lots of things sounded worth returning for. My wife loved the reuben. I had some fancy burger, which was slightly under salted but otherwise quite good. Servers were nice. Well, some things were good here and other things were not so great. Their salad was very good, very fresh with beets and sunflower seeds and a great blue cheese dressing. The Reuben sandwich was good nice serving of meat in it they are Parmesan chicken penne pasta was not very good. It was bland and could've used some garlic, the soups were good. One of the main problems was that the service ended up not being very good at first they were very attentive, but by the end of our meal we were pretty much ignored and had to go search someone to get her bill and then they got the bill all wrong and it took us a long time to straighten out and they seemed a little bit pissy about it. read more

Chicken strips used to be good, but now they taste terrible. I think my dog's chicken snacks are less chewy and dry than the chicken strips here. I guess I should have read the current reviews when we arrived at the Babica Hen location for Gubanc's....we wondered why it wasn't very busy. Well...our experience was truly disappointing. It started with week and tasteless drinks. The server was in a rush even though we were one of 2 tables. The salad was good. The fish and chips were all batter and the halibut was dry. The Halibut Hash was a bunch of under seasoned and under cooked potatoes with an avocado pineapple salsa. The salsa was fine but the halibut was tasteless and very dry. The bill came and yes it was pricy for what we got. I hope with the opening of the new Gubanc's building they will revamp and re-examine the menu items. I like supporting local businesses but with the increase prices for going out, they will need to improve on their execution. read more

My wife and I went back to Gubanc's for dinner last night after my wife had gone there with a friend the previous week for lunch (Babica Hen) . We agreed that the food was quite good but there were several things that happened which make it doubtful we will ever return to either in the future: 1. The service was very slow and the staff seemed to be unaware of the few customers in the restaurant (especially the manager). 2. They automatically added 18% tip (surcharge) to each of the bills! I told my wife that they do that in Europe, not the United States. My wife looked back at her credit card receipt from lunch and found she had added an additional $5 tip which meant her total tip was over 33%! We understand the double hit of pandemic and road construction for that part of Lake Oswego, however, when other former customers review their bill and find out they got a double hit on a "tip", it will be unlikely they will return to either restaurant. Our suggestion is that they remove the forced, no option tip. Also, that they retrain their staff and manager! read more

Let's get the cons out of the way: Parking is tight, it takes a long time to get your food, and sometimes you have to wait quite a bit to get seated. Now let's go for the pros: The wait staff is excellent, and I can forgive the kitchen for taking a long time because the food is top notch as well. The rumors are true: the burger truly is amazing and so are the sandwiches. The desserts are monstrous as well, but oh so delicious and will put you in a food coma for the rest of the day. You've been warned! I haven't been here for dinner, but I can confidently say that this is an excellent lunch spot, although be prepared to use the full lunch hour and if you bring a group of 4 or more, make reservations! Pleasantly surprised..... didn't expect much from the local nondescript place. Great comfort food in my neighborhood. The service was pretty good but more importantly the food was overall really good. The chicken strips were cooked well and flavored just right. The southwester chicken sandwich was really good. Had it blackened. The tomato soup with gouda was quite good. Had the made-from-scratch taste. The northwest apple salad was just ok. Too much sweet stuff on a salad for my taste. Only negative is that the parking can be a little tight. A slight oddity... the average age in the place seems to be 50+. Definitely will be back to try the rest of the menu. read more

REVISED REVIEW AND RATING DOWNGRADE after finding out the day after our meal the restaurant now puts an 18% up charge on all tabs to help them pay their bills. Paid and left and did not know this was included. No one mentioned it at all even after I added an additional tip. I found out the day after noticing a one star review with the writer expressing frustration over the Gubancs action. Expressed concern older people won't see the up charge and tip twice. I went back the next day and looked at the menu. 18% up charge stated in small font at lower right of menu. Wait staff said nothing about it. I ended up unknowingly getting hit with the 18% up charge and then put a 20% second tip on top. 41% effective tip rate. I talked with the manager who basically looked at me and didn't say anything. Finally asked me if I wanted write an email to Gubancs. Consider this my email. Suggestion: increase the cost of the food for better transparency vs. hiding an up charge in fine print. Understand times are tough but doesn't excuse lack of transparency. We have eaten here for years and find it a comfortable place with friendly wait staff and good food. Informal and casual. I like several entrees including the French dip sandwiches. Salads are fresh and tasty. Unfortunately this action by Gubancs has left a sour taste. For this family at least Gubancs will receive less revenue from us in the future. Their actions may end up hurting their business and crimp profits. Too bad. read more

We enjoyed lunch at Gubanc's. Nice atmosphere, definitely a European feel with a lot of wood decor, soft lighting but not too dark. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. Received water right away and it was kept filled. Food came quickly, was hot, fresh and generous servings. Server asked if we'd like condiments and quickly returned with horseradish. Later I decided I'd like some mustard, so I was waiting to signal our server after she finished taking an order, when another server noticed me waiting an came to see what I needed. It's really nice to get your condiments served while the food is still hot! I had a grilled Tuna on sourdough with melted cheese and an artichoke dressing. The tuna salad was plentiful and nicely dressed, the bread was buttery & toasted to perfection. My husband chose the Reuben, which was loaded with lean corned beef, melted cheese and just the right amount of sauerkraut. We shared and I loved the Reuben with a touch of horseradish and Dijon mustard. A cold Hefweizen was the perfect accompaniment. We couldn't resist sharing the cobbler of the day - cinnamon apple with vanilla ice cream. The apples were fresh - not canned - cooked perfectly soft but not mushy. It was not overly sweet and the cinnamon was not overpowering. The crust was soft and thick, but not dry. A generous scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream perfect for sharing. We will return to try out the many other menu items we pored over before making our selections. read more

Reminds me of marina restuarants in Southern California: high-end prices for a non-inspired menu, very good service, and lots of Retirees in Tommy Bahama shirts. Lunch menu was dominated by sandwiches, so if you're not craving one, your choices are very limited. My steak sandwich was good though. Mind you, there was nothing negative about the place. I wasn't sure what to expect going to Gubancs for the first time, and I have to say I was very pleased. The decor is very well done, semi partitioned sections bring a private feel and cut down on noise. The food. I was a little unsure of what to try and was told everything is good, and while that's wonderful to hear I needed a recommendation, which my server provided. She listed the most popular item in each section as well as her favorites. I went for the Ruben as I was told it was the most popular sandwitch and I can see why. It was hands down the best Ruben I have ever had. I am not sure what exactly made it so, but the combination of house made dressing, some very good sauerkraut, and perfectly toasted rye bread. I will be back for another, and to try other items. Dessert was creme brûlée, it had a thicker and well toasted top layer which was appreciated and the serving size was larger than I anticipated. The flavor and texture were very good, with a solid vanilla flavor. One of the best I've had, and the best consistency I've had in a while. The staff. We were seated right away, and the hostess was friendly. As stated before the server was very helpful as we did not know what to order. Though they were busy we had plenty of attention and the food arrived about a minute after our soup and salad dishes were removed. The timing was perfect. I will be back many times as this was one of my best overall dining experiences. read more

I just had the best meatloaf sandwich of my life. I'm not exaggerating here. So good, it makes me wanna dig up my grandma and tell her how this meatloaf had ruined me for all other meatloafs to come! (Is it meatloafs or meatloaves? Doesn't matter!) I thought about stopping and taking a picture but it was too damned difficult to put it down. I didn't have time to pause from inhaling it. Whatever you're doing with this sandwich Gubancs, keep doing it. Don't let the vegans make you feel bad about making this sandwich! Don't worry about the ozone layer and whatever the cows flatulence may do it to. Don't let the price of meat, or Japanese fancy steak, or anything deter you. Just keep making this sandwich no matter what! Side note: the homemade red potato salad was good too! But honestly, you could've put my old freshman year sweaty gym sock next to the sandwich, and it would taste great next to that sandwich. Imagine, if they did this to a meatloaf sandwich, what could they do with the rest of the menu. Definitely will be back. (so why the 4star rating vs 5star rating, you ask? The food and service were good, but they added an 18% tip to my bill, AND didn't tell me when they brought the bill. I added another 20% making it an 38% tip! I called about it, they said it's printed on the menu. I say, NOT GOOD ENOUGH! If the restaurant is going to add a tip, which I'm not sure is legal, to your bill they should make sure you know it! Very very interesting menu. Food is bland with a awkward blend of flavors, and tastes like grease. My family left this place with stomach aches. Our waitress was very kind but some of the other ones had an unwelcoming composure. The fish and chips tasted like fryer oil, the "beer bartered fries" will make you feel sick, the au jus that comes with the French dip tastes like water, and their sandwiches taste as if they were store bought. We will not be returning and I do not recommend this place to anyone. There's much better food out there for better prices. read more

In the 90's I would eat here at least 3times a week. Some of the best food and service around. After my visit today I won't need to go back. We waited a long time for our lunch and when it did arrive, it was cold. Our server never came back to our table once. I had to go find someone to clear our table and get our check. The food was ok, but not like it used to be. The auto 18 percent tip makes me think the servers don't really have much incentive to do much anymore. Funny thing is I would have (any many times do)tip more than 20percent if warranted. Not this time. I was stuck paying for the worst service I've had at a small restaurant that used to pride themselves on being the best. read more

Ordered takeout last night because we are having work done in our kitchen. We wanted simple food--sandwich and salad. Spouse placed the order online and got confirmation. He had to wait at the restaurant for 30 minutes after the promised time. When spouse returned with order, it was not correct. I called the restaurant. The person answering the phone was indifferent about the mistake. Her entire response was , "OK we'll take that off the bill." I asked if they would send me a replacement, and the response to that was, "We're too busy right now." I ended up waiting for spouse to eat and then he went back for my meal. There wasn't an apology when he returned for the wait, the inconvenience, the extra trip, or their mistake. The food was mediocre at best. It's not hard to make a good BLT, but they did not succeed. The lettuce in the salads was very tough. I did email them. There has been no response. We will not be eating there again. read more

For appetizers we got tempura prawns...YUM! Boyfriend and his dad also ate steak bites...they thought they were very good. Salmon sandwich is good, fries and onion rings are delicious! We've been frequenting this place for many years, a terrific neighborhood place in Lake Oswego. They've never disappointed us. The menu is always fresh and the dishes constantly evolving for the better. Tastes great and just different enough to pleasantly surprise you and your friends! The mushroom soup is legendary. Drinks and desserts are always great. The ambiance is getting dated but not uncomfortably so. They keep it up and current and clean, very clean. Service has always been quite good. Was introduced to Gubanc's during a recent visit to Portland because my dad has been going here for years. First off, parking is horrendous - if you can find parking in any of the adjacent lots and walk over, it's better than trying to navigate in what little space you have/compete with the other diners for the six or so spaces in that tiny lot. I love the interior/ambience. The lighting is dim - but not so much that you need a flashlight to read the menu - just right. The chairs are the comfy kind - that invite you to sit back and relax if you need to. Seating was a bit tight - we were literally seating in a awkwardly placed table that was practically in the middle of the walkway - with the bar directly beside us. Hostess did offer us a table within the actual sit-down area, but the wait would have been much longer. I had the Beef Stroganoff (seasonal) which was very flavorful and hearty. The cuts of tender meat was perfectly seasoned, juicy and bursting with flavor with each bite. The gravy had a nice touch of sour cream without being too overwhelming. Service was prompt (although that could be in part because our table was like right alongside the main walkway) - our drinks were refilled without the need to ask. Ambience was more of a sit down restaurant than sports bar. Didn't have room for dessert - will probably come back the next time I'm in the area. read more

Very disappointing. This used to be one of my favorite places. I got the tuna melt that was nothing resembling a tuna melt except the bread was toasted..... in a toaster. The tuna was cold and the cheese was not melted. There was so much tuna and some mushed up red stuff that oozed out everywhere. I literally had a large pile of tuna left on my plate. Came here with the fam on our first night in town. Fun bustling atmosphere, but the service suffered as a consequence--it took at least 30 minutes for them to take our order, and even longer for the food to come out. ***GUBANC'S SPECIAL BURGER - Hand-formed 8-ounce natural burger with sautéed mushrooms and onions on a Kaiser roll; fresh fruit. Add cheddar, blue cheese, swiss, or bacon. This was a basically decent burger, but there was really nothing unique or memorable about it, including the meat, buns, or onions & mushrooms. I opted for swiss, which was an innocuous choice. ***FISH & CHIPS - halibut fillet, batter-dipped and deep fried; served with French fried potatoes and tartar sauce. These chunks of halibut weren't the least bit fishy, plus properly breaded and pleasantly crunchy, which meant a lot. The fries were pretty standard, as were the sauces. ALL IN ALL: Besides the waiting time, it definitely wasn't a negative experience--it was the week of Christmas, though, so I'll cut 'em some slack. However, likely not remarkable enough to warrant a return visit. read more

SO Bummed to have our local tried and true go downhill so fast. I didn't want to believe the rumors but sadly they are true. I guess our first clue should have been empty tables and no wait at 6pm on a Friday night. Aside from the poor experience with the food and service, we will not patronize any establishment who automatically charges 18% before you sit down. I've eaten here at least 15 times over the course of several years. Normally, hands down best food. Always perfectly cooked. Ironically, tonight I brought my father in law for his birthday and was bragging about how top notch the food always is *drum roll* then, it wasn't. Food took incredibly long to start, I mean longer than its ever taken. Got the cheeseburgers Ana happy fries for my son; the hamburger was burned on both sides to the point it tasted burned. My daughter for a kids grilled cheese and a side of fruit. The fruit was so ransid that it was actually fermenting in its own rotten juices. Smelled like death. My father in law got the 6-piece fish and chips and there was a "mistake" in the kitchen so he got his food last and 15 mins after everyone else got theirs. I got the chicken and dumplings. My dumplings were literally raw uncooked dough. I'm speechless, I don't know what to say. So disappointed. Only saving grace was the amazing server, Ashley. She was amazing. read more

I didn't have high expectations for this place since pubs usually have mediocre food. I was amazed at the portion sizes and how delicious the food tasted. My friend and I shared 2 small entrees, added a salad for $3 and a cream brulee dessert and our bill only turned out to be $30. The creme brulee was HUGE! It was 2-3 times bigger than what other places would give you and it tasted pretty good. read more

I enjoyed the atmosphere and the service the most, but my meal and that of my mate were very good, too. We had the grilled tuna sandwich and the Greek salad with chicken. I was surprised that the grilled tuna wasn't a filet, but rather made into tuna salad. I should have read the menu more closely. Still, it was plentiful and delicious. The Greek salad was large and plentiful, but I could have used a bit more seasoning in the dressing. It came with plenty of olives, though, which was nice. I'd go back again next time I'm in the neighborhood. No matter what others say, I liked the ambiance. It was much nicer than I expected. read more

3 Reasons Why Gubanc's Pub is the Absolute Best: (Preface - I can assure all reading this that I am purely a patron, not an insider. Thus, the below is purely the truth as I see it, and I am a food snob, just to be clear). 1. They have been open since the '70s, and still going strong. (Take my word for it, frequent customer). Personally, I have been eating here since I was 4-years-old and the quality has never once wavered. 2. Dark. You can come here to both hide out and be seen, both are attainable. Accomplishes both the "hidden gem/hole in the wall" vibe, yet is known by Lake Oswego natives to be infamous. (Side note - When the weather is nice, they also have a glorious patio, very private). 3. The salads are ALWAYS fresh, the soups are on that same train. Soup of the day, every day - need I say more? Let's put it this way, when (notice I write, "when," not, "if") you become a regular, you'll memorize the weekly soups, just like the cute older women and men who come in here often - probably because they have been coming here since the '70s!) ;) At Gubanc's it's "less is more" - simple menu, quality ingredients. And it is always done right. The wait staff is wonderful, Lexie in the bar is so fun and funny and nice. Edna is a rock star and Sherry is a doll. This place is wonderful. Their website states it's to create equal opportunity for back employees however I disagree how is that the responsibility of the customer being forced to pay a fee whether the service is good or not.
