I think the DIY handroll set was fun, and the portion sizes on the bento and chirashizushi are more than generous here, but beyond the novelty there was nothing that really stands out. The quality of the food was, around the board, average, and we had no problems with the service, payment, or refills on water. The decor was nice enough for an evening out with friends, and the sushi bar tucked away in a private area is a nice touch, but there are too many options on the higher and lower end for Gurume to really stand out. I would be very neutral on potentially coming back, and I think its perfectly fine for a neighborhood upscale-ish sushi spot, but not worth going out of your way for. read more

Had Dinner today and ordered Black Cod combo and Yosenabe Udon. Last time we had Black Cod dinner combo which has Miso Soup, Vege and Shrimp tenbura, Sashimi, Korean white Kimchi. We like Korean White Kimchi and ordered one more time again which was free. We ordered Yosenabe Udon first time and it is the best Yosenabe we ever had. Solid place and have gotten good service here so far. Lunch specials are a good value and it's available everyday until 4pm. The omakase offerings are a good value, too. They have Hokkaido uni, which makes me happy. Their sushi rice is actually seasoned very nicely, which I find lacking at other places. Went here once for lunch forgetting it was Valentine's Day...they don't do the lunch specials on Valentine's, so got the Premium Chirashi Don and although it was good and had a nice variety of fish, they were stingy AF on the sushi rice. Literally had it spread in a super thin layer on the bottom of the box and I was scraping it off to eat it. For $50, I think they could add a bit more sushi rice. read more

No one came to the front for at least 5 minutes, waiters were passing me and another couple that were waiting to be seated. I was told to sit at the sushi bar and then given a menu. They brought me water while I was looking. The menu really did not describe what some of the food was. I had to flag down a waiter and ask about the menu. Placed my order and it took some time for my sake to be delivered. Mind you there were 3 waiters and very few customers. Also it appeared no one was really assigned to my section. The sushi chef gave me my rolls but when I looked on the table there was no soy sauce. Had to wait again to flag someone over and ask for some. Is it just me but shouldn't soy sauce be out and available at a sushi restaurant Oh My sushi was just meh, nothing that wowed me. This is a pass for me. Came here to celebrate my birthday with their Omakase. We came all the way from SF for this. My girlfriend had requested to sit at the bar and had called the restaurant 3 times to confirm. When we arrived the owner sat us outside at a regular table and completely disregarded her reservation. This was only the beginning of the downfall of our experience. I have been to many Omakase restaurants and this place was by far the ABSOLUTE WORSE. To even call this place an Omakase experience is disgusting, saddening and an absolute mockery to those who actually do Omakase. When my girlfriend told the owner that she had requested for the bar, we ended up getting sat at the very corner of the bar. Mind you, this was literally at the very end where all the sushi chefs would make sushi rolls for the entire restaurant so literally the chefs and waiters would reach and hover over my head and yell "whos is this for" "what" "which table" while the owner again would stand right next to us yelling at the chefs bombarding all over our conversation and experience. The table was so close to the hallway that we would literally hear all the dishes being cleaned, picked up and dropping the entire time we were there. Usually at Omakase, dishes would be served to you one at a time. The chefs would be interactive and welcome you as you sat down, and the chefs would wait for you to finish your dish before the next one would be served but none of that had happened. Each dish was already PRE-made and placed on the side and was given to us by the waiters themselves not even the chefs and dishes would be given to you so quickly when you haven't even finished your last plate. So ridiculous. The salad was so watered down that I could taste the water and had to toss it. The fish was so gamey that I literally had to pull the fish apart with my hands because it was so chewy. When the restaurant eventually died down from the customers, the owner sat in front of us and was literally in the corner talking amongst the chefs and I could hear his obnoxious youtube videos being played as we were eating. Again, what a lovely experience... Food: The food was so blahhh. I don't even understand the reviews of this place. The salad was so watered down that me and my gf did not even eat it at all. We were given sashimi slices as part of the omakase which was so odd?? When a few items on the Omakase menu were also missing we weren't even informed of this! The soup that was listed on the menu was supposed to be clams but we were given cod.... The menu said we were to be given tempura and vegetables but we only got one shrimp tempura. As far as Omakase, we were not given any fish that were special that you cant order regularly such as tuna, snapper, ebi, toro. What a rip off! For the price of the Omakase it was such a let down and way over priced. I can probably order everything on their Omakase menu for less than $50 dollars no lie. Also, the chef was more interested in talking and helping the party that was at the end of the table than us as they were drinking sake with them all night. Our chef kept leaving us to go drink with them and even had the nerve to ask the customer themselves for refill of shots! There is no doubt their seafood purveyor is making a valiant attempt. The staff does have a tendency to push the omakase, but the option to choose your own may be just as good. 10 courses with a dessert are impressive and filling and with a price tag of $80 and upward there are other choices in SoCal. The ambiance is can be a touch trifling, but it is pleasant when the dining room isn't full. The value just doesn't feel like it is here. The cuts of Nigiri and Sashimi are not as shiny as the price they charge. read more

Currently on vacation in California, saw "Gurume" and decided to check it out for lunch. Grading scale 1-5 1: dogwater 2: it's ok 3: meets standard 4: good 5: delicious Halibut carpaccio: 4/5 Very good. I expected something more bright but, to my surprise, the carpaccio was both light and had some earthiness to it. The halibut was cut well. The greens and the sauce (forgive my terminology) gave it a nice citrusy, earthy, and light feel and taste. The fish is without a doubt the highlight of the dish and everything else is there to enhance the flavor of it. Well made. Would order again Hamachi Kama: 5/5 Very well made. Extremely delicate and tender. You can taste the char of the fish, and the sauce that comes with it pairs well. It doesn't overpower the fish. I always appreciate restaurants that do not try and hide the flavor of the main ingredient. Simple and delicious. Salmon Kama: 4/5 Well made. I personally like hamachi better than salmon so bias is 100% playing into my rating. However, it was as well cooked as the hamachi Kama and tasted great too. Sashimi premium: 5/5 I have always steered away from large platters like this, because you don't really know what you're getting. When I asked what fish comes with it, I was told "an assortment." Despite my best judgement, I got it and I'm glad I did. There was no "buffer" fish or "low-end" sashimi pieces. Everything was fresh and were quality pieces such as the halibut, scallop, and abalone that were included in the moriawase. My only complaint is the price. A little high but it is understandable considering the quality and freshness of the fish in the dish. Overall grade: 4/5 Don't judge a book by its cover. This establishment is located, slightly hidden, in the corner of a plaza with Trader Joe's and some other restaurants. I did not expect much and was even considering going somewhere else. I am very glad I came here and was not disappointed. Every dish looked clean and delicious and tasted just as good. The price is on the higher end and the quality of each fish was not consistent throughout the whole moriawase. Maybe it's just me as I'm no sashimi expert? Maybe it's my stubbornness in believing that there is always room for improvement? Either way, it was not perfect. Nothing is ever perfect. You can see the chefs focused on making every dish, trying to achieve perfection. Perfection is impossible. It is the path to an impossible feat that allows for the mastery of a craft. We wanted to visit this place after seeing they were offering a 15% discount off the entire meal. Upon arrival one Saturday lunch, we double-checked with the hostess if the promotion was still valid and she said it was. Great! Who loves paying full price to take a risk on a new sushi restaurant? We sat down and ordered various nigiris with 2 chirashi dons ($25 each). (I usually get chirashi dons when visiting a new sushi restaurant since it gives the best sample of a restaurants fish quality.) I asked our waitress what the fish were and what's the difference from the premium chirashi Don and the waitress had no clue... Whatever, I took a risk anyways. The chirashi's were mediocre at best. Half of the fish in the chirashi were disappointing (surf clams are nasty, octopus was chewy and tough, shrimp was dry, some random whitefish had this awful hard tecture, and tamago had hardened). The salmon and tuna were decent on the positive side. The chirashi just seems wildly inconsistent (check other review photos). I guess I wasn't special enough to get the influencer treatment. The nigiris were okay. We got salmon toro, amberjack, and red snapper. Nothing to write home about. When it came to the check, another waiter brought it. I mentioned the discount to him again and he said they were no longer were accepting vouchers (despite the contradictory response upon first arrival.) I showed him the voucher on their website and said there wasn't an expiration date. He still wouldn't honor it. That just left a bad taste in my mouth more than their fish. Our total bill for 2 chirashi dons and 6 nigiris was ~$100 (with tip). At this ridiculous price and subpar service, I would rather go pick up fresher fish from mitsuwa across the street at a quarter of the price. read more

When entering the restaurant, it was pretty empty. But it might be the reason that we are having late lunch. The service is good, very thoughtful and detailed when serving the food. They will explain the course and name out each fish. The fish is fresh and tasty. My favorite fish will be yellowtail toro and ma dai. Everything is pretty good, but miso ceviche is a bit under satisfaction. The fish isn't marinated in the sauce. It's more like sashimi mixed with the sauce. The flavor is there but separate from the fish. They did try to give customer an upgrade experience, overall is good but think the table could be cleaner. Located in the plaza with Trader Joes and Smart and Final First off: I think the place punches above its weight in terms of quality:price. Ordered sashimi and some one off pieces of sushi. All of it was delicious. Partner ordered a Ton Katsu set that was yummy and great portion size. I think this spot fits nicely where you want something a little nicer quality than say, Sake2me sushi or Oki Doki or Sushi Damu. Brought some of my family to Gurume for a nice little sushi dinner. Everyone enjoyed it, food was great and they had some nice selections on their menu. Sushi rolls were very large, and fish tasted fresh as well. One of us had the noodle with beef option and it was very fresh and flavorful. It was just shy of almost annoying how often they checked on us ... this is a silly thing to complain about, but maybe worth mentioning. Furthermore, one of the 6 pieces was inari, which I hate and when I placed the order I asked them to sub it out for something else. Instead, they just didn't give me the 6th piece. Bummer. But know that the fish is the chef's choice. Ours included Ama Ebi (raw shrimp) and Giant Scallop, my two faves. The not-so-positives: The Omakase Sashimi at $70 a head was not acceptable. The pieces of fish were odd sized and oddly cut and appeared to be chunks of left over fish cuts. Some were stringy. Two pieces were so chewy they were inedible. We left them on the plate.
