Since the late 1990's I've been trying to find a fish and chips restaurant to take the place of my all time favorite Mr. Chips in Santa Paula, Ca. It's been extremely difficult to find one that not only has a great fish, but also a great tartar sauce. I've searched high and low and could, at best, find one that had decent fish but a bad tartar sauce, or the other way around. I had eaten at the H. Salt fish and chips in San Fernando about 20 or more years ago and thought that it was just "okay". I tried the H. Salt fish and chips in Reseda and this one come and huge huge 2nd place to Mr. Chips in terms of the fish, and is about on par with the tartar sauce. There are house across the street from this place and I envy them. I'd be there every day if I lived there, but I live in Las Vegas. Next time I'm in town I'll be stopping by again. read more

We love this location! The staff are super friendly and the place is always clean. We usually call in the order and pick up to eat in the car (even before covid lol) We especially enjoy the fish, scallops, and small shrimp basket the most. Fried to perfection! Maybe it's just me but in general, fish and chips is just a really mid dish--it's something I've tried from a handful of different places and it's not a dish that ever really shines. Unfortunately, H Salt Fish and Chips is no exception but of the places I have tried, I think this place ranks better. Don't get me wrong though, fish and chips isn't a bad dish, I just personally find it a bit flavorless and bland and the addition of tartar sauce and malt vinegar doesn't really do much more for me (maybe all these places just need to add a bit more salt). Nevertheless, I think if for some reason you are a fan of the whole fish and chips experience, you will probably like this place. So I ordered, a lunch combo: comes with one piece of fried fish, one piece of jumbo shrimp, and chips (fries, just mentioning if you've never had fish and chips and are for some reason unfamiliar). The piece of fish I had was decent, cooked perfectly, although as expected kind of bland; I'm not a big fan of tartar sauce and malt vinegar but I still use it otherwise it would taste like nothing. The shrimp was much better, actually packed more flavor just on it's own; also the thinness of it (it's sort of butterflied and shaped into a ring) paired with the battered crust works so much better than the fish. Chips are just fries, nothing spectacular and could also use some salt, couldn't eat more than half. The service here is really good. Although there's usually just one lady behind the counter (I believe she's the owner/manager), she does an amazing job of running the place and is super nice with all the patrons. If you're the to-go and don't want to wait kind of person, they're good with taking in phone orders and I've never had a mistake; you'll have to wait about 10 minutes if you decide to order on the spot. I still like this place, and oddly enough, I actually crave this dish once in a while. Like I said earlier, I'm just not a huge fan of fish and chips so that doesn't happen often; but if you like it, I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

At first I thought there were NO H Salt Fish N Chips. But when I yelped it there was one in the valley! So excited I took my daughter and we got the 3 piece dinner. Fish was crunchy and good with malted vinegar. Fries could of needed work as I could see as they poured it in the fryer it came from a costco frozen fries bag. But really I came for the fish. Place was clean, owners were nice and friendly, a few tables for outdoor seating. I will be going again as this is the only H Salt I found that is considered nearby! We tried this location for the first time in a few years. We were very disappointed to say the least! What a weird experience it was! Obviously under new ownership. The lady that took our order was wearing a microphone and was very difficult to understand! She tried to upsale everything and kept asking us if we wanted to tip her (twice))! We sat down and waited for our food. After 20 minutes, my husband saw our food being put up in the heated case. We waited 10 more minutes while she helped 6 other customers! We asked if we could please get our food! She snapped back saying I have to take care of the people in line! After waiting over 30 minutes and after all but one other customer had ordered, we finally got our fish and shrimp. It was greasy and had no flavor at all! Such a disappointment! I got a combo 2, which came out to about $23. I feel like that's standard as fish and shrimp are not cheap. I like to rate my places from 1 to 10. 1 through 3 - will never comeback 4 through 5.8 - will come back if someone I'm with wants to try the spot 5.9 though 7.0 -will come back 7.1 through 9.9 will make an effort to come back and recommend 10 the best place! Listen they have NO AIR CONDITIONING. It is almost unbearably hot in this place. Now for the food... It wasn't BAD but wasn't good either. Just OK. The shrimp was over cooked and they trick you with all of the batter. The fish was cooked well but the batter really IS completely lacking any seasoning whatsoever. The most disappointing thing is that they nickel and dime you on condiments for takeout. No matter what, you get a tiny little ounce of tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. Another ounce will cost you $0.30. They have a bigger one but I'm not sure what it costs. No ketchup for the fries. Took a while to get my food too. Just spent 2 hours in the car so I called my order in 20 minutes before I got there to make sure it was ready...I should have known when she wouldn't take my name for the order on the phone that it wouldn't be ready. It's a tiny spot located on Saticoy and Lindley (nearby the gas station). It can be hard to find but it's in the same area where tofu house is. The place can only hold a few people so just order to go if you have a big group. The area is kinda dead so I never had to wait in line the times I visited. Batter can be greasy sometimes, but still maintained its crunchiness after surviving the 10 min drive home (until I refrigerated it). The lady at the counter is really nice.
