The lady at the counter was nice and yes, it did take a while for us to get our food. But perfection takes some time and this isn't fast food. So slow your roll homies. Got the basics fish and chips and some shrimp and the everything was on point. The place could use a better air conditioner, but I'm here for the food and not the air, right!?!?!! The fish was nice and crispy and the shrimp was pretty dang good too. The chips, ehhhhh, I've had chips that were better. But the vinegar was malty and nice and the tartar sauce also pretty good. The place is tucked away in a little shopping center, right next to to a sushi spot and a tofu house. So you might miss it, if you are driving fast. The only other H Salt Fish and Chips I know of is in Hollywood. So, whenever I feel the need for some fish and chips, I know where to go. I use to come here all the time for lunch 2-3 years ago. It just doesn't taste the same anymore. I decided to check them out again. I got the fish, jumbo shrimps and fries. The fish and shrimp was mostly battered and very oily it was soo dark seems like they didn't change the oil or something didn't look golden and fresh like it use to. The fries here are always cold for some reason. The jumbo shrimp was mostly batter didn't really see the shrimp in there. Well the Tatar sauce helped out a lot that actually made it edible wish they gave more of that sauce tho. read more

Yum!! This brand is a fixture of years past when people where not so health conscious and places like Arthur Treachers and Kentucky Fried Chicken were first on people's goto lists for take out. This food was not to be eaten here but taken home and enjoyed at the dining table. I am glad this place is still here. The menu is basic. The decor is basic and what you got in 1970's take out. It is great to see this little one time capsule of a restaurant still going and a testament to the food they serve being good. I would heartily recommend you come here and try out what is a vanishing past ubiquity in America. In C19 times they have two small outdoor tables. There is never a large crowd. I live across the street from here. Been coming here for 3-4 yrs. I usually get the london special which comes with 2 battered fish & fries for about $7. The batter to fish ratio is bad now with more batter than fish. The quality of that small bit of fish has gone down too. The parking lot is small & can be difficult sometimes. The wait times are long, even if you order ahead of time. Most of the time they will wait til u get there to start cooking so look for a wait of at least 10 mins. The staff are ok. Ok, here is my fine review of H. Salt Esq. Fish & Chips: 1. It's a take out joint. three tables inside and 3 tables outside. 2. The fish: I liked it. It wasn't freshly cut and breaded but it was tasty and the breading was crispy. I order fish & Chips a lot. These are better than places like Fridays, Red Robin, and the like. 3. The "Chips": they were fine. I like fries but don't love them so I don't care if they are a little soggy or cold. nothing extra vinegar won't fix. 4. The clams!! People on Yelp are funny...they'll give an overpriced, crappy place like Hook'd on Fish great reviews, yet complain about H Salt being too greasy. First of all, anyone who's ever had real fish & chips from an Irish or English pub knows that fried fish of any sort isn't your healthiest of meals. If you're going to eat fish & chips, guess what....it requires FRYING which requires oil/grease. If you don't like greasiness or any type of frying, then don't eat here. Second of all, you can get a 2-piece fish & chips meal here for $4.99. Considering that your average burger from Jack in the Box is in the almost-$4 range and that a Burger King/McDonald's meal is now almost in the $7 range, I consider H Salt to be a good, cheap alternative to other fast food places. The people who are complaining need to put the price into perspective and realize that this is a fast-food place. Lastly, the food is pretty good, and the people who run it are very nice. I've been here quite a few times for lunch and dinner, and I see many people ordering it to-go. Obviously enough people do like this place that it's doing enough business to stay open during this recession. Every time I've ordered here, the food has always been piping hot, straight from the fryer. If you're going to have super high expectations and compare a $5 joint to an expensive fish place, don't even bother coming here and just stick to the places that can accommodate your expensive palate. Ya gotta give it up for H. Salt Fish 'n' Chips, maties. ARGHHH, any landlubbers who don't like it will walk the plank if I be hearin' ye beefin' about greasy this or dirty that when I am eating there. Six bells, time for ye to be leaving', says I, ye scurvy dog, ye! Here's the deal: fish 'n' chips is fried fish and french fries and if it ISN"T fried it's going to SUCK, big-time. I've been here several times and have always had the best possible experience. Of course, taking food out is going to be less positive because fried food needs to be eaten hot and crisp but once it's packaged to go it starts steaming itself to limpness inside the package and is cooling off the minute you walk out the door. They charge for extra condiments to go? GOOD! I notice WAY too many people taking condiments, napkins and straws in restaurants of every description and wasting them, and maybe this will cut down on it. When you eat in, they give you all the ketchup, tartar sauce, vinegar and cocktail sauce you want, free. The fish is excellent, the batter fantastic. Shrimp are delicious. My FAVORITE item on the menu is the big planks of fried zucchini, which are to die for and very reasonably priced. The place isn't perfect, so here's my reasoning for why they're not getting 5-stars. It IS a fast-food place and they only have bottled and canned drinks? Um...it's 2012 and fast-food restaurants should, in my opinion, all have fountain drinks with free refills. There, I said it, and if it were otherwise I'd eat here once a week. Another beef I have is that there is shrimp and then there is shrimp here. Huh? If it doesn't say JUMBO shrimp, you'll be getting a shrimp that was cut in half lengthwise and fried--in other words, HALF a shrimp! Bogus. Hushpuppies are fried, spiced cornmeal and the one time I had them here they were overcooked and dry, which is unacceptable when you are a fish 'n' chips place. It'd be VERY easy to upgrade to that fifth star, H. But I will happily continue to patronize them in the culinary desert that is this area. BCD Tofu is in the same mini-mall and I've had ONE good experience for ONE try, so will need to visit them a few more times before giving them a yelp, so there's hope. read more

Just updating my review for this place since its be a long time since I last wrote about this place. Still a great restaurant with a super friendly staff. Their fish is still delicious but for some reason I don't remember it being so heavily soaked in oil. I know its fried fish so its supposed to be oily but on this order it felt like the oil soaked in like a sponge and carried more than usual. Still love the restaurant though so i'll keep going back on cheat days and hangover days. read more

I love fish and chips. It always makes me feel British. Though I am not, I like to pretend every once in a while in an homage to my heritage. We ordered a large pile of fish to split between me and my dad (maybe 4 pieces of fish). A basket of fries to split and a side of hush puppies (I love these things). The fish was good, not amazing, the batter was nice and crunchy, though a bit flavorless. Overall the texture was right and it was not too greasy. The fries were commonplace and nothing to continue talking about. The hush puppies were forgotten on our order and arrived burned when we were almost done with our food. But a full star goes to the man running the counter. Super friendly, pleasant and courteous. He was very polite and apologetic when he realized he forgot our hush puppies. So the food was okay, the service was very kind if a bit forgetful. I ordered the 'Catch of the Day' combo, but seeing how we were a long ways from the ocean I was a bit skeptical. The fish is deep fried after your order, so it may take some time. You can phone in your order if you don't want to wait. The chips (or fries) are nothing to write home about. If you decide to eat there, you are given squeeze bottles filled w/ tartar sauce, ketchup and ketchup w/ vinegar. I also had a side of deep fried shrimp and zucchini. They also have another meal, similar to the one above but it comes with 2 jumbo shrimp instead of one for $9.00. Beware you can save 2.50 if you order the captains combo but receive one less shrimp. H. Salt should be ashamed of themselves. They sell product to their franchises but never go in there to look at the place. This place by far is the most disgusting, dirty, and unhealthy place I've been to. Came here for lunch in 95 degree weather. First thing I noticed as I waited for my order is that my thermometer showed that it was 97 degrees inside of this shit hole. Call me crazy but I do carry a thermometer. They had 2 $10 Target fans on, which did absolutely nothing. The front facade of the counter had terrible burn marks on it, the overhead fan in the right corner was filthy and the ceiling looked like it had mold or water damage. As I'm waiting for my fish and side orders which took about 20 minutes to get I was sweating up a storm and I'm not one to perspire very often. What transpired next was beyond belief. Now I know friends that fish and chips are rather greasy. But the lady who was preparing my dish who I can only assume was the owner didn't drain the fryer of the fish or hush puppies, she actually dumped the items in the basket and let the rest of the grease from the fryer basket drip over the food like it was a fuckin' garnish. The food is good, nothing out of this world, but if you're looking for some quick and greasy grub, this hits the spot. I've had mixed experiences with the staff here, some of nice, some just get the job done, and one time someone just didn't have a clue, but this is a quick service type of place, so it doesn't really ruin the experience, just sucks if you have a detailed question sometimes.
