I use to love this place. I called in an order at 8:04, was told 15 minutes. I showed up 20 mins later. Waited a bit longer. Usually while you wait you are offered some water. Not tonight. I get my order go home. None of anything in the bag was mine. I drive back. I ask if I can have my order. I'm asked what's wrong with the order. I tell them it's not mine. I sit down and get told 10 mins. No apology, just a dumb look like it's my fault. I'm sitting there in the restaurant watching all the tables get their food. My order comes out I leave. Still, no apology for the inconvenience. I get home, the food has rotten lettuce pieces and is a half order of what it normally is. I didn't think my food here was all that great, but this place made me laugh, and sometimes that's the difference between a two and three star review from me. I know there are Yelpers who are dead solid serious about humor never playing a part in either the restaurant experience or Yelp posting, but between you and me, I think they're dicks. This isn't exactly the New York Times. I've never been to this Oltorf Hai Ky before, and probably won't be back, unless you really insist on it. It took me ten minutes just to turn into the place, waiting for an opening in oncoming traffic. And when I did walk in, I couldn't quite identify what I was smelling - Disinfectant? Ass? It was probably the laundromat next door. You get used to it, but why should you have to? I got the "Make your own stir fry" affair with tofu and Buddha's Delight sauce, but I'm not sure if Buddha Himself would have been delighted with this one. It does gets props for being hot and filling with lots of veggies, but it was way too oily for me. Granted that's subjective, but when I have to use a fork because the food is slipping off my chopsticks, it's usually a sign. The double indemnity here was having the exact same dish at Duy the day before, and Duy's version being much cheaper and far better. The thing is I'm a fan of the Westlake Hai Ky, because their food, presentation, décor, ambiance, and interior aroma have always been good for me. I assume it's the same people running both places, so just go with the one you're comfortable with. I will mention the Oltorf staff was pretty cool and laid-back, and when they were prepping the house while I was the only person there eating, they cranked up a compilation mix of "Minus the Bear" tracks, presumably to enhance our mutual moment in life together. I have been to Hai Ky twice in the past month, it's relatively close to my pad, and has a pretty good reputation on Yelp. On both visits I tried their Pho, and I also tried their Beijing Noodes - - pretty darn good! The Pho here is pretty good, about 3 stars (IMO - compared to Pho Saigon and Pho Danh). First off, I believe the portions are smaller here - where I always get a small bowl I am usually full at the other places, but here I usually have some room for more. The noodles here are shorter in length, I believe they may cut them, and you don't get as much (for a small bowl). The meat is good, but not as high quality as the other places. Still, it is a respectable bowl of Pho and it's worth a trip for sure if you are in the area. What blew me away was their house special dish - - Beijing Noodles. I overheard someone mention how popular they were, so I ordered it to go. I really enjoyed this dish, it was very flavorful and unique. The dish has a house garlic sauce mixed in, but I didn't get much garlic or sauce in mine, so I think next time I may ask for extra sauce. Regardless - - the Beijing Noodles were very tasty and something new and unique. Service here is always pretty good, they make consistent rounds and always fill my water glass on time. Even though it's 3 star Pho (IMO), I will be back for those Beijing Noodles and their Tofu Stir Fry since it's very popular as well. My husband and I used to be regulars here. One day, half way through my usual bowl of beef pho, my fingers and toes started to tingle & my heart rate just about doubled.... freaked me out!! I stopped eating and started to down glasses of water, and thankfully felt better after awhile. No idea what caused it. No, I am not allergic to MSG, having been weaned on it. When I was growing up, everybody's mom - including my own - had a little pot of the stuff next to the stove. Anyway, after that bizarre episode, we didn't return to Hai Ky. Finally ventured back yesterday after more than a year's absence. I stayed away from the pho and instead ordered bun with grilled pork and eggroll. It was delicious. The eggroll was piping hot, the pork was a bit salty but flavourful and the vegetables were fresh. The portion was so generous I could hardly finish my bowl. If only Hai Ky ran a cleaner establishment, it would have won its way back into my heart. I don't remember it being so dirty before. This place needs to invest in some proper cleaning supplies and train the staff to use them. The glass windows and doors needed a good wipe or ten. The tables needed to be bussed in a timely manner (right after the customer leaves might be advisable). The chairs we pulled out and the table we sat at, with its sticky surfaces, could have used a cleaning. The floor could have doubled as flypaper and needed - nay, cried out for - a vigorous mopping. Seriously. I took a step and almost left behind a sandal. It was a slow time, and three servers idly hung around.... what gives? Even with the tasty bun, I won't be back. It wasn't exactly a clean place inside.. tables were still dirty & utensils were not cleaned thoroughly. Service was just a-ok, though our server really just took our order & brought us our food. And nothing else in between. On to the food. We ordered two bowls of pho dac biet - that came with the smallest portion of sprouts & the fixings. I mean, sprouts are pretty inexpensive so it wouldn't hurt to give a tad more. The soup base & noodles were good, however the meat itself was rather tough & hard to chew through. The meat slices were thicker than usual and the meat balls had huge chunks of tendon in them - to me, that isn't a good sign. The one thing that was decent were the egg rolls - filled with pork, taro, mushrooms etc. So if you were to get any appetizer, I would suggest that. I've been here before for the pho a handful of times over the past 8yrs I've been to Austin. The come back for me was always the price. It is always a cheap price for a big bowl of pho that 2 could even share. Shrimp Spring Rolls - this was okay. You can't really go wrong with this - except when the main part of the roll (being the shrimp) tastes a little more seafood-y than it's supposed to. Beef Pho - not bad. Ol' Rooster has never been a fan of the Pho. Vermicelli bowls half filled with noodles and lettuce don't get me excited either no matter the protein or sauce you put on top of it. Hai Ky might have just changed my mind a bit in regards to Vietnamese fare on a recent visit. The shrimp and pork rolls proved a good start; best spring rolls to date for me. The pan fried dumplings were delicious with the "special" dipping sauce. By special they mean adding carrots and cilantro instead of the standard diced scallion; a fresh touch and very appealing flavor. Having no idea what to order I consulted the server who told me the spicy Hai chicken was in his top 5. Nice blend of spice with peppers and jalapenos stuffed in between every noodle and vegetable on the plate. The wife had the tofu with the thick fried noodles (101) and nearly cleaned the plate. Those noodles were amazing! Little Rooster had his usual chicken fried rice; he ate a decent portion and had the rest the next day for lunch. We were the first table on Saturday and service was great considering I was dousing everything in Siracha and requiring continuous tea refills. First impressions are critical for me in reviewing a new place; Hai Ky performed admirably and I can't wait to go back a try some more interesting dishes. read more

I just returned from lunch there, and it always leaves me wondering why I don't come here more often. Everything I've ever had here has been very fresh, with the vegetables cooked to perfection - never soggy, never raw. The beef and shrimp are never rubbery. There are a plethora of choices, a vast majority I've never tried. Today I had #96 - Hu Tieu Ap Chao - Shrimp, chicken and beef stir-fried with flat crispy rice noodles and assorted mixed vegetables in a light house sauce. The sauce is not overpowering and allows the taste of the individual components to come through; it just barely coats the ingredients without leaving a big puddle on the plate. The vegetables are perfectly cooked. There is an almost light, smoky taste to everything that's stir-fried, which gives an extra boost of flavor. This was also present in one of the vermicelli bowls a friend of mine got - I tried a small piece of pork, and the flavor of just that small piece was out of this world. The rice noodles in my dish have a crispy layer on the outside, and several chewy layers on the inside - a very pleasing texture. It is a perfectly balanced dish in my opinion. The portions are more than adequate, even for a big eater like me and the price is quite reasonable for lunch. I'm definitely going to make an effort to come here more often. The only complaint is that the parking in the strip center is extremely limited. A quick note about the service: I'm more about the food than the service. Looking at the other reviews made me realize that the service is a little sub-par, but not enough for me to deduct for it. I may have a bad experience in the future, but for now I can't deduct for it. In regards to authenticity: No idea. All I care about it whether or not the food tastes good. I may have a different take if I were of Vietnamese origin and they made a disaster out of a traditional dish, so my review is from a non-native perspective. read more

God, I wish Kim Phung was closer. We had the pho and a vermicelli bowl. The brisket in the pho was a weird gray color and the egg rolls in my bun were charred to the high heavens. I guess this is the new hipster joint because there were more ironic t shirts and stupid hats than you would even see at Beauty Bar. I hate to profile, but I will not go back to a pho establishment unless i am guaranteed to hear tons of Vietnamese chatter and out of place TVs on the walls. Wow! Very suprised. Spring rolls didn't look like they had shrimp (they did) but the pork made me happy. Some of the best I've eaten. The #96 which was reccomended by the waiter and consisted of vegetables, stir fried with shrimp, beef and chicken and "noodles" was delicious. The "noodles" were, what I thought through the entire meal was fried fish, were texturally and visually, nothing like noodles. What a pleasant suprise. I was extremely dissatisfied with my Hai Ky experience last night. Their food quality has definitely gone down over the years, but we were in a pinch for dinner and thought ordering out would be the easier option. I ordered for pick up around 6:45pm, order confirmation said it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. Perfect. My boyfriend drove to pick up the order, gave them my name, and drove home (I have to admit that we may not have had the same issue if he had checked the order before leaving). He got home and the order was completely wrong, so he drove back to resolve the issue. He triple checked the order before leaving with the person working at the restaurant. He got home at 8:30pm, and we have the right items this time, more or less, but: 1) the veggie egg rolls had meat; 2) the tofu spring rolls had meat; and 3) the tofu pad thai, for which I specified in the notes to have made with no egg and no fish sauce, had egg. The other dish was a meat dish, so me being a vegan, had nothing to eat. It was already 8:30pm, and we didn't want to deal with the hassle of going back a third time. It's a red flag when a restaurant uses the same type of pork (Thit Nuong) for spring rolls, rice dishes and noodles. Either they don't know, don't care or are too lazy because they don't think their customers would know. Although it worked with the spring rolls because it added a little for flavor to it, not sure if it's suitable for the egg noodle soup.
