I must have a pho addiction, because this was the third night in a row that I had pho. It was my third different restaurant too! I can say that even though it was at different restaurants, it was still delicious! This place was no exception. We came to this restaurant off of a recommendation from a friend. We were going to eat at Super Pho, but after seeing the workers fighting outside, we decided to go to Hale Vietnam Restaurant. This was our first time coming to this restaurant and we were not sure where to park. All of the street parking was taken, but we noticed some people crossing the street from a parking lot and going into the restaurant. We parked there and did the same. After arriving at the restaurant, the hostess asked us how many and told us to sit on that side in the corner, after pointing which direction to go. I found that an interesting way to seat us. We were given menus, and as usual, I ordered pho. The rest of the people in my party ordered pho as well. I had rare beef and beef brisket, while everyone else ordered just rare beef. The padded, black chair that I sat on had some bean sprouts in the cracks, but I suppose it is hard to get all of them. The plate of veggies came quickly as well as the bowls of pho. While eating, I noticed that the decor was the nicest I've ever seen at a vietnamese restaurant. There was a great, big, gold buddha statute in the front of the restaurant to greet visitors and a big hole in the wall in the shape of a ramen bowl. Nobody wanted much veggies so I piled the rest of the veggies on my bowl, because I love veggies! While eating, I found it interesting that a waiter was standing next to our table almost the entire duration of our meal. It reminded me of fine dining where there's always a waiter nearby. I liked how there were no wooden chopsticks, but only plastic chopsticks, similar to the ones found in chinese restaurants. Good overall. read more

I can't honestly say I've tried the pho or Vietnamese rice dishes here cuz I haven't. This review is solely on the Vietnamese fondue. I'm going to be pretty biased as this is the only place I've ever tried Vietnamese fondue at, but dang, I'm hooked! If you don't know what Vietnamese fondue is, you'll definitely have to give it a try. It's a savory hotpot (fondue) with a tom yum-like flavored broth. What you do is first pick what kinds of meats you want. There are a few options, but I always opt for the beef and shrimp. It comes raw along with rice paper, lettuce, and pickled veggies. You dip the paper in water, cook your meats in the fondue, then make your own rolls by wrapping the cooked meats and veggies in the paper. The broth is also very tasty to eat on the side while eating the wraps. It's a little on the spicy side but the experience and flavor trumps all! Located on 12th avenue on the bottom of the Realtor Building. I can honestly say ive been here numerous times. One for its locations to many of my meetings and second because its good. Once in a while I get into that Pho phase where you just want to have it 2-3 times a week. In those instances, you have make your rounds to different places depending on where you are. Parking is either on the street or in the paid lot behind the building. Tables are clean and the service is great. I would suggest to go during off peak lunch or dinner hours. This place can get crowded and you may have to wait. Pho...the broth is tasty and clear. It's not to fishy or as my friends would say its not "Pho Stink Smelling". The meats are fresh and if you order your meat outside of the broth, you will notice that its still frozen a little (love it). Spring rolls...OMG! I think I eat the entire plate myself. Yes it was that good or Im always that hungry for them The rare beef salad is also great. You can share this with friends as it might be much to eat a large bowl of Pho and a full plate of salad. Arrived at 8:45pm with the "open" sign lit up outside only to be rudely spoken too that they were closed. Hands down my favorite pho ever. I remember when I had the luxury of living 5 minutes away from here, and every time I got sick I would drag myself down here and cure my sickness with their pho. Now I live on the other side of the island, but that doesn't stop me from coming back. Restaurants in Kaimuki come and go very quickly, but this one managed to stay for as long as I can remember. Food: -Medium Chicken Ball Pho: $8.50. If you've tried beef balls, the chicken balls are way softer and yummier. The broth here is like no other pho broth I've tried. It's not oily like the other places, and I don't get a kanak attack afterwards (no MSG). Nice sized portion, and comes with all the normal fixings (basil, lemon, jalapeno, sprouts). -Stuffed Chicken Wings: GET THIS. It's chicken wings stuffed with veggies. How do they DO it, I don't know but it's pretty darn good. Service: The waitresses don't speak English and they're not very friendly, but they do their job so it doesn't really bother me. I've been here twice. On my first experience, I ordered the rare steak salad and Pho. The Pho was unmemorable and a bit overpriced in comparison to their competition. The rare steak salad is obnoxious. The presentation was A++. I haven't seen this any place else but its not what I wanted. I want tasty not eye candy. You cant have your cake and eat it too. But this salad was NOT good. The meat was sliced too thick among other things wrong. I agree with other yelpers: it seems to be catered toward "Americans." It was pretty good sside from i did not hsve sny tendon at all in my bowl.. but the broth was yummy! As we were meeting a friend who lived in the Kaimuki area, she suggested many cuisines we could choose from and we finally settled on Vietnamese due to the fact that my little guy probably couldn't handle Thai food. So, away we traipsed to Hale Vietnam which is indeed located in one of Oahu's older neighborhoods. Service was prompt -- maybe TOO prompt. After giving us water, we were immediately asked if we were ready to order. Naturally not as I hadn't even perused the menu yet. So away they went and within minutes, were back again. Luckily this time, I told them we'd start with the Imperial Rolls and the Papaya Salad. So off they went with our order. What was almost hilarious (now that I look back on it) was that within 5 minutes, another waiter was back asking if we were ready to order. At this point I thought, "why the hell not" and ordered another 2 dishes while my friend ordered others. The Imperial Rolls and Salad arrived and omigod, what HUGE portions these were. Okay, there were 6 rolls but a chock full of accompanying salad leaves and herbs to go with it. The salad was a large plate with poached shrimp in it, about double the size of a salad one would get in a Californian Vietnamese restaurant. Both were delicious! I ordered Bun Bo Hue, a traditional Vietnamese spicy beef noodle dish which I crave all the time. However, the problem is, no one seems to make it the RIGHT way. Whenever I see it on the menu, I'd order it just to see if it's the authentic kind. I'd tried it at many holes in the wall in San Jose, CA which came close, but never exactly right. Sadly, this one missed the bus completely. Our lemongrass beef was really tasty (although I had intended to order BBQ beef and totally didn't know what came over me when I ordered this dish) and the tofu in curry peanut was also rather good. Some restaurants in Hawaii offer both white and brown rice and Hale Vietnam is no different. I love the fact that you can have this chewy nutty option if you so choose! Hidden gem in Kaimuki. I ordered the chicken ball pho and my friend ordered the vegetable pho (not on the menu btw). I was a little disappointed when my dish came out because all it was was broth, onions, noodles and chicken balls. My friend's vegetable pho was towering with fresh veggies (carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, broccoli and etc) but once I tasted my pho I was pleasantly whisked away to a happier place. The broth was delicious with lots of tasty chicken flavor. I am used to the semi-oily kind with no so much flavor ...you start looking around the table to add condiments- not the case here. My dish was delicious the chicken balls had great flavor and were tender. I loved my broth - minus the onions, I am not an onion eater. Everyone around us was ordering the spring rolls - looks like a hit! The service is good. The staff don't speak a lot of english but its enough to get your order right and feel welcome. Tonight was my first time eating here. Hands down THE BEST service I have ever received, even compared to higher end restaurants. Wait staff sat us quickly and within 5 minutes someone had already brought us water and was asking to take our order (and it was pretty busy in there too). We never had to call our server around to ask for a refill because they were so attentive to us. Appetizers came out within 10 minutes off ordering however entree's took a little longer than I expected to come out, but that's understandable considering that there was lots of people dining in. The price to portion ratio was reasonable and the food was very good and tasty. Restrooms were also kept very clean and tidy, although I was confused with the restroom situation because I was unsure if it was a shared restroom or single use per room; there were 2 doors for toilets however the second door had a stall + urinal. Simply just delicious Vietnamese food with good and quick service. Came here with some family who are regulars. Ordered some summer rolls as appetizers. I normally know them as spring rolls elsewhere but, hey, it's Hawaii and it's always hot so I guess they can be called summer rolls here instead. The pho tai I ordered was very satisfying -- good broth, noodles and meat. Everyone else in my family all ordered bun cha (with bbq pork and imperial rolls). Horrible customer service, I ordered pho and an appetizer through uberEats, the order arrived missing meat and noodles (only broth & herbs for pho delivered), I contact the driver who said to contact the restaurant, when I contacted the restaurant the lady on phone was super rude, told me to contact UberEats for issues. I told her I have already contact the driver, she then asked me to check the bottom of the delivery bag, after I told her it wasn't there, she starting yelling at me insinuating I was lying about the incomplete order. "Southern Vietnam style dishes: Bo Nuong Vi (grilled beef), changed beef to pork. You wrap lettuce, pork, herbs and sauce with rice paper by yourself. A bit like Temaki Sushi in Vietnamese version. I love pho, so a few friends and I stopped by this place ot see what they got. There's alot of Vietnamese places around Honolulu these days, when people like the taste of asian inspired food. The place was packed when I went on a Friday night. It was busy enough, but made no reservations. After waiting for 45 minutes, we were finally given a table near the entrance of the restaurant. The service was average, although it can be sped up. I ordered the basic beef Pho with green papaya salad. Summer rolls were pretty decent too, compared to other vietnamese restaurants I've already been too. The Pho always fills you up, since I drink up the broth after eating up the veggies and the noodles. The large Pho is pricey at almost $10 for a large bowl, but you get what you pay for. The taste was as average as you can get, but what would you expect for a noodle soup? Maybe more veggies and different types of meat. Or just more noodles... read more

Parking is municipal, and there's a ton of it on their side of the lot. You'll pay about a dollar. No validation required. I ordered the "Large Bowl #6 with the beef on the side" (it's a huge bowl of pho with 'rare steak' and tripe, $8.75). The great thing about places like this is that they also provide you with this huge pile of vegetation to toss into your soup. Bean sprouts, chili peppers, lemon, mint, and, of course, basil (woo!). Pinch off those basil leaves, roll them in your hands to bruise them before putting them into the steaming broth, and spray the whole thing with a lemon wedge and you have yourself a winner. I order the beef on the side because it stays pretty rare and considerably more tender if you put into the soup at the table, rather than in the kitchen. The Imperial Rolls are served with that nasty-smelling, but wonderful-tasting fish sauce. Just make sure you wash your hands after. Super stink. Fill a large leaf of lettuce with your choice of herbs and noodles, then wrap it around one of the rolls for the "proper" eating method. A large bowl of the pho here is always more than enough for me. I eat a lot, and it takes quite a bit for me to register as "full," but these portions never fail. If you're up to it, they also serve Vietnamese coffee (turkish-ground coffee brewed over sweetened, condensed milk and served over ice) with huge, bold flavors. If you enjoy being on the receiving end of stink-eye and disdain, order it as a "Thai Coffee." I've learned that from first-hand experience. Glares, abound. There's a ton of potential at this restaurant, but I've never ventured beyond my #6 pho. I've seen people with steaming bowls (like shabu-shabu) at the tables, huge non-pho dishes, and some pretty impressive desserts. One day, one day. Heard good things about this restaurant's Pho from a friend, and decided to go and give it a try. It was a full house when we got there a little after 8pm, so there was a 5 minute wait before we got a table. Once seated, we order summer spring rolls for our appertizer, 2 medium bowls of Pho (Vietnam's classic beef noodle soup) and to end the night with a banana & tapioca with coconut milk dessert. Can you say YUMMILICIOUS!!!??? We didn't have to wait too long as service was fast, efficient and our food was served at a timely manner. I've eaten pho at so many restaurants on Oahu but Hale Vietnam is easily my favorite of them all. I come so often the wait staff rarely brings me a menu unless they don't recognize me. My order is always #11 Large with beef ball. Basically rare beef, briscuit, tendon and added beef ball. I compliment it either with an order of Spring Rolls or green papaya salad. The broth here is what keeps me coming back. Without having to add anything to it, I just love the taste of it. Of course I splash a generous amount of fish sauce in it because I love fish sauce too! Spring rolls are always fresh and tasty and the green papaya salad is so refreshing on a hot day. A great compliment to the steamy bowl of pho. The staff, always friendly of course maybe because I'm there weekly but they are always quick with the food, refilling my water and helpful throughout the meal. I may continue to taste the other pho shops just to compare the broths but there has been none that I've found that come close to Hale Vietnam for me! read more

If you can smell the beef broth near the pho place, you know it's going to be good. I particularly like their broth, tastes like its been boiled - long time not short cut-ly :) some pho place, you'll notice your broth becomes cold(or less warm) fast because they merely heat up the broth when serving. I like hale Vietnam'd because the broth is filled with beef bone taste, and the broth ought not to be clear. The less clear it is that means the longer the broths been boiled. The steak is usually a better quality than other pho places :) Definitely thumbs up! read more

I'm new to Hawaii and believe it or not - I don't really like it here. I googled pho during this terrible head cold I'm nursing, and Hale Vietnam came up. Hale Vietnam has been in business over 30 years so they are doing something right. I came in tonight sick as a dog. They didn't just take my order, they offered Me water and a table to sit. They embraced the aloha spirit and were kind to Me since I'm ill. This alone would bring me back. I ordered the egg rolls and the pho. The egg rolls are Vietnamese perfection. My deceased mother in law made them the exact same way. It took me back to her kitchen. The pho is amazing. Seasoned perfect, lots of ingredients . Great prices, great service and amazing food. Bad customer service. Followed me outside the store to force the lady to tip her. I went back inside to talk to the manager and he told me that I was required to tip ??! If her customer service was good I would've tipped her. Plus she touched the food with her fingers that I was supposed to take home. I wonder what they do in the back with the food‍. Bad service and will force you to tip them. Never going back. Always put an "X" mark on your receipt so they don't steal your money just for tips. The owner of the restaurant was extremely rude! I simply asked for the garlic hot sauce and he brought a super ridiculous small amount in a dish and I told him I'll need more and he rudely said "finish this first and I'll give you more" who the hell says that to a customer??? It was like being scolded by a parent. Absolutely unacceptable in customer service. And to think he is the owner of this place. Our server was super sweet and friendly. She should be the owner! The portions are smaller than most pho places I've been at. And the rare steak was super tough. The imperial rolls was good though. If I could give "NO" stars I would. Really it was an ok Vietnamese place. And sadly, the Pho wasn't too great. Enjoyable but definitely not the best I've had. But if you need something easy then this might be it: THE GOOD: --cheap parking in the municipal lots next door --it's fairly sizeable so the wait isn't too long --fast: the food comes out pretty quickly --reasonably priced. i can't say cheap but it wasn't too bad --the deep fried imperial roll. ok no one said this was going to be about healthy food. but it was tasty goodness. THE NOT SO GOOD: --the pho left me wanting something better. the portion of the large bowl is hefty so it wasn't that I wanted more. i just wanted better flavor. the soup was kind of oily and the flavor was a mix of bland and just like salt. --i don't think they really take reservations unless you have a large group. they just do walk in sign-ups on the clipboard --they're not too friendly; but i don't know if i've ever been to a vietnamese place where i said wow, we're like buddies! I definitely will try some of the other Pho places before coming back. But if you just need a quick hit of some deep fried goodness, then come in for the imperial rolls. This restaurant is delicious. I love the pho here, it's super tasty and awesome. They have a variety of things on the menu, but I only really come here to eat the pho. The summer rolls and imperial roll is awesome and a must get when coming here. The staff is quick and attentive, so even if there is a long line, it tends to move pretty quickly. Parking is abundant in the back lot for a minimal fee ($1-2 depending on how long you stay) and the food comes out fast. read more

A friend recommended this place and I'm so glad we tried it. Located on 12th ave right across from Koa Pancake house, the restaurant sign is blocked by a tree so keep an eye out. not that hard to miss though. It's very nice, fancy decor and layout. Workers are nice and attentive and I've never had to wait for my water to be refilled. We sat down, had a few minutes to look over the menu, I ordered the pho with rare steak and an iced coffee with condensed milk. Oh.my.gosh. I don't know if it's because they put a lot of condensed milk but it was SOOOOO good.. I was trying to pace myself from tanking the whole thing instantly. What I like is that they have all these selections with different meat combinations all for the same price. they have a medium and large size and I could barely finish the medium.. of course the bf ordered a large and finished it way before I could finish mines.. Service was great, someone is always walking around, checking to make sure we don't need anymore water and what not. They have street parking which is metered or you can park in the paid lot (the lot for victoria inn and happy days, etc.) It's .75 an hour so you can take a quick stroll at the different shops.
