If you aren't into the ice milk thing, this is Half & Half's "regular" milk tea shop with Taiwanese snacks with drinks at cheaper price points. It's a cute Taiwanese snack food place (minced pork and rice, fried tofu, etc.) that is decorated with late 70s, early 80s kitschy toys that will for some of us bring back memories of our childhood. Back when Taiwan had limited access to American toys and they weren't yet making top quality clothes, toys and electronics. I did not try the food, but there is quite a selection of milk teas and drinks around $3.50 each. I had a regular milk tea with boba and enjoyed it and would get it again. It had strong tea flavor with a good balance of sweet and milky. Parking here can be tough on the weekends as the plaza is always busy. read more

I try random drinks but my go to is their regular milk tea and brown sugar milk tea with boba. Half and Half's boba is just SOOOOOO good. It always comes out so fat, warm, and chewy. It's very consistent. This location serves smaller cups at around 3 bucks so it's good for people who dont want to sip tea for 10000 hours. We all know how fat a regular Half and Half cup can be. Pretty sad that the San Gabriel location is forever closed so this location is the next closest one to me.. but I always liked this location since my sisters and I call this the "portion control" Half and Half-- when you want boba but don't want a full size drink :D Their prices are really fair compared to all the other boba places going around, and it does the job for a quick boba fix! This location likes to keep the concept of how boba was like back then (hence the name Good Old Time) where everything, such as the decor, size of the drinks, and their menu items, just feels pretty nostalgic. Taste wise, it has the same qualities as each half and half location around, so it doesn't taste any different. I asked the waitress if the meat is fatty on this and she said no. The sandwich I got had pork belly pieces that were very fatty, and I said, I thought she said it wasn't going to be very fatty. Really home-y feeling if you're missing taiwanese food! Got the spicy tofu with pork blood cake, sweet potato fries, noodle soup, and the chicken rice- all were really good and authentic! This Half & Half stands out from the other Half & Half boba stores because they actually serve some pretty tasty food here - and at a very affordable price. They used to be located on Valley but moved to Las Tunas and currently in the same plaza as Bonchon and Hui Tou Xiang. So parking is pretty impossible to find if you're looking in the small lot and arriving during prime lunch or dinner hours. But luckily it's near the residential area so there are a good number of street parking spots. The storefront is very small. There's maybe like 4-5 tables and the rest is bar seating along the counter. If you don't mind a slightly cramped space and your neighbors overhearing your conversation, you're good. Usually the wait can get pretty long, especially on the weekends - so chances are you'll grab whatever seat you can get. I was lucky enough to have a friend that is incredibly punctual and arrived at the restaurant before the dinner rush on a Friday night. The menu offers the regular drinks that you can get at Half & Half. But you can also order food such as noodle soups, snacks, combinations of items, instant noodle soup, shaved ice, and special items such as tremella or tomato plates. They offer combo sets where you can pick two items and add on a drink (from the $1.88 options, otherwise you pay the difference I believe) for around $10. I think that's a bargain! I ordered the minced pork rice and Good Old Time soup with two toppings that I believe were seafood balls and pork. I would say that having the minced pork rice by itself is probably on the lighter side (portion-wise), but having the soup with it made the meal much more worth it. Loved the minced pork rice - came with half a soy sauce egg, a slice of Korean yellow pickled radish, and some cilantro. Rice was soft and fresh, and mixing in that minced pork gave it so much flavor that I could have been happy just eating that. And they have containers of pickled vegetables on the side, which I absolutely love, so I went crazy with that. As for the Good Old Time soup, I don't remember much about it except that there was a very gooey texture to the overall soup. It also came with some cilantro, beansprouts, crushed peanuts, etc. Lots of ingredients, and I liked that it was pretty filling. It's probably not something I would specifically order, but it was a nice addition to the minced pork rice. My friend - who is vegetarian - unfortunately couldn't find anything on the menu that didn't have meat. He asked about the curry rice and sweet corn soup ($9.88), which they said was vegetarian. The dish was decent, but nothing spectacular for him. He was pretty disappointed that they didn't have more items that were meatless. I thought the curry tasted pretty good, but not something I'd order the next time I visited. I loved the fact that you could add on a drink for free. The drinks that they make here are of the same quality at all Half & Half locations - except that they serve the drinks in a smaller cup at a fraction of the price. Drinks can be purchased for around $2, and you're getting quality tea! I ordered the boba milk tea while my friend ordered some specific drink that they messed up. They were kind enough to remake him his drink. Boba quality was the same - super chewy and really sweet. Tea was good. And having it come in addition to the meal was the best part. I don't remember if there was a minimum on card, but they do accept credit cards. Workers are pretty busy running around and taking orders, so once you're done eating, it's easier to bring the check and cash out at the register. tl;dr - Love the affordable prices here at Half & Half Good Old Time. I really liked it. 2. The service was mediocre. It seemed evident that the entire staff lacked enthusiasm for their work. 3. One of the reasons we opted for takeout instead of dining in was because we didn't feel at ease or comfortable. 4. We had picked out few items and drinks to go. Upon arriving home, we unpacked our food and were pleased to find it beautifully presented in attractive to-go containers. We have been coming to this place ever since they opened several years ago, and have never been disappointed. Well, we stopped by this place for a quick lunch today, and the food came quickly. Staff was also friendly, so everything was fine....until it was time to pay. I was asked to pay at the counter, which was not a problem. At which point I was told that there would be an additional 4% credit card fee, which I don't remember paying during previous visits. Fine, I'll pay the 4%. Then the big surprise came - they are charging me a "dine-in" fee (something like a dollar something). Seriously? You've already raised the prices recently after Covid, but now you want to make another dollar for customers who want to come in and eat? Well guess what, I don't think I'll be coming back. This "dine-in" fee just shows how greedy you are. It also shows you have no regards for your staff - because people who like your food will now just order takeouts, once they are made aware of your poor business practice. Take out orders mean no dine-in fee for you, and no tips for your staff. Does this make you and your staff happy now? Why stop there? Charge for utensils, napkins, extra plates, using the restrooms, and bill preparation. Keep adding ridiculous charges until all your old customers stop coming. read more

Stumbled into this little gem while on a dumpling crawl to Hui Tou Xiang a few doors down~ This Half & Half is definitely not your standard chain. Its really charming inside, filled with cute and kitschy 70s deco. Service was super friendly and there was a good variety of drink options. What I absolutely LOVED about this place is the fact that the drinks were perfectly portioned and priced right!!! Most drinks average around $2.50 a pop & are solid in taste~ my favorite is the green apple yogurt black tea with boba! They are served in smaller cups than you'd probably expect, but it's actually just the right amount for a refreshing treat! I usually never finish most drinks from other boba places because they are in huge cups or way to creamy/sweet, but the ones here are just the right amount and flavor to accompany a meal. Didn't get a chance to try the food here yet, but will definitely give it a try next time~ the Taiwanese snacks & plates looked and smelled great! I've been coming to Half & Half Gold Old Time for many years and for the longest time it was my go-to secret spot that I loved so much. I loved that it was affordable, no-frills, homey feeling and most importantly, delicious. However lately, after the recent "renovations" they did a few months ago in August when they shut down for a few weeks, I feel like I'm eating at a whole new restaurant This place literally feels like a budget airline now. There are multiple signs everywhere in your face informing you of additional fees. Want to dine in? Additional fee. Want to pay with credit card? Additional fee. Want to make your drink hot instead of cold? Additional fee. Your child makes an exorbitant mess? Additional fee. You want extra pickles with your food? Additional fee. (Used to be unlimited & free!!) It's just too confusing, either raise your prices to accommodate for everything or don't implement all these additional fees at all. Also they fired all their old staff and now have all these new young kids working, most of whom can barely speak Mandarin or know the ins & outs of the menu. There used to be these nice girls who worked there who were so efficient and knowledgable about all their dishes, and now they're all gone. I have no clue why they fired everybody but it really makes me sad to see all those girls go, especially since they have been there for years and through a pandemic. The quality of their food is inconsistent now, I feel like depending on the day and who is cooking some days the food is as good as before and some days it is just okay. Overall I will keep coming because I love their menu, but I'm deeply upset by all the changes that have been put into place. It no longer feels comforting to be there after the implementation of all the new stingy fees & removal of previously free perks such as pickles. I came here with my friends on a Sunday afternoon, so parking was not hard. Half & Half Good Old Time is a retro Taiwanese restaurant with 80s decorations and music (they also play old school Cantopop!). They serve authentic Taiwanese snacks and signature Half & Half drinks. I have frequented this place so many times for their delicious Taiwanese street food, great prices, and friendly quick service. Food: My go-to order is the good old time soup with rice (vermicelli) noodles and combination topping. The combination topping comes with squid, pork balls, fish balls, and intestines. I love adding some of their chili oil into the noodle soup - they have both a normal spicy chili oil and a very spicy chili oil. This noodle soup is a type of "geng" where the soup is thickened a bit with cornstarch - used in Ro Geng and Oyster Vermicelli and even Hot and Sour Soup. Their other dishes are just as tasty and are reminiscent of Taiwanese street food. They offer combinations if you're feeling extremely hungry. The drinks are great quality (boba is just as delicious) and are a bit smaller than the regular sizes at Half & Half Tea Shops. The drinks are also much cheaper as well! Takeout: I phoned in my order for takeout during the COVID pandemic. It did take a couple tries before they picked up because they were busy. They speak great English, so no need to worry about whether they'll get your order right. They package the food very well, so you don't need to replate with your bowls or plates from home. Too bad I don't live in SoCal. If I lived within 30 minutes of this fine restaurant, I would be here every other day! My party ordered several dishes and every one reminded me of being in Taiwan. The turkey rice dish taste just like the famed dish from Jiayi. The tomato / plum juice brought back childhood memories from decades ago, when street vendors peddled sliced tomato cherries with candied plum in between. Prices are very reasonable. My go to for quick and simple meal, snack, and an ice cold drink. I usually order the soup with glass noodles and squid balls. It comes out super hot. They offer self serve chili sauce, pickled veggies, and other condiments at the back. I add loads of chili and dried onions to level up my soup and eat the pickled veggies as a side dish--bam my comfort food is complete. The cafe has few seatings, so not many dine-ins, mostly take-outs. For tea drinker, adding soft pellet ice in my passion fruit tea is like gold--not many places uses this ice. They only have size small cup for drinks for a decent price ($3.88). A plus for providing paper containers for to-go.
