The server asked if we would like an appetizer. We ordered escargot, which was fabulous. In fact, all the food was delicious, but we left fuming mad once we received the bill. After each of us ordered our entree, the server asked, "soup or salad?" in a tone that would lead the guest to assume it came with it. We all ordered soup and were charged $8 extra each. He absolutely knew what he was doing. We had already ordered an appetizer! Not only that, he brought sherry for our soup, which everyone knows is an essential ingredient in good crab soup, and charged each of us another $3 for that. We visited Halyards two weeks before and our waitress for that visit never tried to trick us into ordering something we didn't want. No one likes to feel like they've been had or manipulated resulting in a padded bill, no matter how much money they have in their bank account. It was insulting. I feel for tourists who are being taken advantage of. The guy was the snootiest server i've ever encountered and I've eaten at some of the nicest establishments across South Carolina and Georgia. We don't plan on returning. Sea Grill and Delaney's for us from here on out!! read more

We had Halyards do our wedding catering, so we knew that it would be good when we made our reservation. We made a reservation on Open Table for a Tuesday night. The restaurant is nicely decorated and laid out. We were immediately seated. Our waitress was friendly and consistently checked on us. We ordered the shrimp taco (to die for), which they split in the kitchen for us, the she crab soup (creamy delish), the nights special Filet Minon (tender and rich) and the scallops (fresh and light). We also ordered the banana cake with foster sauce which was a decadent end. We would highly recommend that you add this spot to your SSI restaurant list, and for any special occasion. read more

We had a great meal on the last night of our vacation. We had a large party of 9 but I had made reservations on Open Table about a week in advance and the table was waiting for us when we arrived. We enjoyed the unique cocktail menu before dinner. Appetizers were recommended by the waitress and all were very good: House made bacon, calamari, crab bisque and some salads. Most of us had fish specials, the grouper of the day with scampi sauce was very good, but I wish there had been some grilled shrimp to top the fish. Everything was very god, service was quick and courteous, overall an enjoyable evening. My only complaint was the price of the steak on the kids menu. At $18 it was a little ridiculous. I understand that it was filet, but the portion was so small that even my nine year old was hungry after finishing every bite. We ordered 3 and one was significantly smaller that the others. I suggest using a less pricey cut of meat like rib eye or strip steak and lower the price to $12. read more

Holy cow. Great with the social distancing setting the evening off right. Ate dinner at the bar instead of a table. Had the jalapeño margarita and it had a nice kick to be sure - yum! Started with the blueberry salad and it had the right amount of each ingredients. The candied pecans were small so there was no fighting with a big nutty bite but a lot of bites with pecans. Highly recommend. I had the salad instead of fries with my burger. Wanted a great burger and this place delivers! The burger was cooked to perfection, juicy and wow. Only thing I would skip next time is pecan pie where I chose to hold the ice cream. Based on the rest of the meal being top notch I will take responsibility for taking the ice cream off I am sure it would have been better with that on top. Service was at a great pace. Wow! Everything about this place was amazing. Wine list, specialty drinks (fresh blueberries in the blueberry mojitos). Entrees were 10/10, our table had Salmon, Tuna, Buttermilk Chicken Small Plate (which isn't small), and the Burger Small Plate (also not small). We also had the fried Brussels sprouts and mushrooms. I would definitely go again, Heather was our waitress who was GREAT. Knowing we weren't locals, she gave us recommendations for breakfast the next day which she was right, Cafe Frederico was yummy! heather also recommended the blue berry cobbler to finish off our meal, OMG!!! Recently had supper here. Some of the best filet mignon I've ever had. Service was exceptional. The chocolate mousse cake was heavenly.

We dined here for dinner last night. I am and have always been an adventurous eater so I asked the chef to order for me. What a meal! I brought my own bottle of Pinot Noir and the chef started me off with a pork belly that was chargrilled. OMG, slap yo mama delicious! Pair perfectly with the Pinot. Then came a seared tuna over risotto. An unusual pairing of two of my favorite things. I think the risotto over powered the delicate but perfectly cooked fish. But as the entire dish came together it turned out amazing! I didn't like the ginger on top, that felt completely out of place but easy enough just to push to the side. I have been coming to the island since I was 10. I'm now 31. i've eaten at halyards many a time. Last year the food and service was bad. My parents and I came here this year to see if it would still make our list of food to eat during the week. we were pleasantly surprised that it had returned to it's good food and service. For appetizers, I had the blue crab bisque, my mom had the potstickers, and my dad had a special salad with blueberries and gorgonzola and a champagne dressing. My mom ooohed and awwed over the potstickers. The crab bisque was good but very filling. For entree, I had the grilled ny strip(came with sweet potato fries and soy lime sauce). The steak was huge. The fries were really good but the soy lime sauce was very salty(not on the steak). My dad had the grouper with sweet potato hash(another special). He said the hash was awesome. Mom had the lamb chops(excellent she raved) She also ordered the homemade fries(which were amazing). I give it 4 stars due to the drinks(I ordered an ameretto sour and dad and mom had martinis..they were allright but not as good as i've had), the dessert (the profiterole was NASTY..we all shared). Haylard's is one of the personal favorite restaurants on St Simons Island. They are located across the parking lot from the Island Cinema. All of their food is very fresh and prepared the way you want it. Whether it be the speckled trout from the creeks, triple tail from the beach, snapper and grouper from the reefs, or mahi-mahi and tuna from the Gulf Stream, the freshness of the fish allows the kitchen crew to experiment and deliver an incredible dinner. Haylard's Seared Yellowfin Tuna over Wasabi Mashed Potatoes, Steamed Thin Carrots and Snow Peas and a Plum Wine Reduction with Pickled Ginger is one of my personal favorites. read more

The staff is Johnny on the spot, the food is cooked exactly to order, and I love the fact that they leave the coffee thermos on the table so you don't have to worry about running out of coffee. My wife had the crab cake, it was really good but frankly was a little strong on the chives and just needed a little something. The kids meals were great. Definitely worth a visit. My husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Halyards! I had the shrimp and grits based on previous reviews and it hit the spot. The wedge salad was great - crispy lettuce, creamy dressing, yummy tomato pieces. My husband had the beef and shrimp pot stickers and the seared tuna small plate and enjoyed them both. The best surprise of the night was the VERY low mark up on the bottle of wine we ordered! Our waitress cracked me up - she was awesome and slightly eclectic. She came by the table just enough but not too often. One thing I did notice, and this is a pet peeve of mine, is the food was delivered on top of itself; we were still finishing our salads when the next course arrived. Maybe this doesn't matter as much to others as it does to me but proper timing of food delivery is a must for a 5 star rating by me. General experience was actually really good but food left us disappointed. Ordered the grouper and it clearly wasn't grouper - it wasn't flaky like grouper and it cut like overcooled chicken. Asked the waiter if it was really grouper and he said that maybe it was black grouper so it might seem a little different, which is ridiculous. Asked him to send it back to the chef and ask if it was the right fish and the chef said yes but didn't come out or do anything to remedy the situation. Very disappointed. read more

A couple of friends recommended we meet here for dinner. I had been here a couple times before, but it had been a while. It was a Thursday evening and there were 4 of us. It was not super crowded and my friends had arrived before me, so there was not a wait time. The staff was extremely nice and helpful with finding my group. They were consistently pleasant and obliging throughout out the night. I believe Sarah was our waitress. She was the best. I was the only person that did not order a salad (I had ordered first), and she even circled back around to be sure I did not want one after everyone else had ordered. The space is warm and cozy. Perfect for a romantic dinner or just sitting around the bar for beer during the game. The food was amazing. Everyone in my party had shrimp tacos for an appetizer. They seem to be everyone's favorite, from locals to visitors. They were delicious, as always. For our entrees, we all had a different fish choice. Mine was cooked perfectly and could not have tasted better. Everyone was pleased with their entrees. Overall, it is hard to complain about an amazing staff, a beautiful setting and great food. My husband and I ate here tonight celebrating his four year anniversary of being cancer free. The atmosphere was great. My husband ordered a glass of wine that he didn't like at all and they replaced it without hesitation. He had the scallops and said they were the best he's ever had. I had the fried chicken (and changed the vegetable from peas to asparagus and from grits to mashed potatoes). It was so delicious! Great flavor, extra crispy and juicy. We ordered key lime pie for dessert and it was really good. They wrote congratulations across the top of the plate in chocolate for my husband (I let them know when I made the reservation what we were celebrating). We'll definitely be back! read more

I had Halyard's cater my wedding. I choose this restaurant because they have a reputation of being one of the best on St. Simons. When I went to the tasting I was confident in the quality of food and made to feel at ease. I asked how much food I needed to serve 125 people heavy hor'dourves and was told I had ordered enough and they would never let me run out of food. I had enough money in my budget to order more but was assured I did not need it. I RAN OUT OF FOOD. The food was gone before I even made it to the reception cite. I was also given a quote for some additional labor which I approved. It was approximately $400.00. I gave my mother a blank check to pay the balance the night of the wedding. Big mistake. I was charged over $800.00!!! Afterwards I contacted Halyards to let them know the mix-up. I was told that was the amount of the quote. I informed them that I never approved that amount and approved a quote for $400.00 less. I then forwarded a copy of the e-mail the company sent to me with the updated quote (for $400.00). Then I was asked how I would like to be compensated. I asked for a refund of some of my money or comparable gift certificates. After MONTHS of no contact, the Chef called me personally & I was told that I didn't order enough food, it was my fault for giving my mother a blank check and it was not in Halyard's best interest to compensate me. He was extremely rude. Needless to say this was a nightmare. I could have cooked the amount of food I had out there myself. I was sorely disappointed and would not recommend this catering company to anyone. I had multiple vendors on my wedding day and I had no problems with anyone else. Everything was wonderful except for this company!!! I have a close friend who helped me plan the wedding. She has her own wedding planning company & she did mine as a wedding gift to me. My friend arrived to the reception early and stated that the food was uncovered and there were flies swarming the food. She was appalled and said based on what she saw she would NEVER recommend this company to a couple planning their wedding. I used Village Creek Landing as my venue for my wedding. It was a disaster. I have never written a review like this before, but I feel like people should know about my experience before they book with Village Creek Landing. I'm not trying to deter you from booking VCL, just be cautious and double check everything that they do. First, about 3-4 months before my wedding, I asked for an extra table on my quote for the DJ and when I received my new quote, there was an additional $1300 with no explanation or detail. Apparently, Misty, the coordinator forgot to put that on the first quote and just decided to add it on without any type of notification. After many emails back and forth, she agreed to waive a $50 flip (from ceremony to reception) as an apology. $50 = $1300??? Part of the expense was for VCL staff to set everything up for the ceremony and then "flip" it for the reception. My wedding was rained out by a flash thunderstorm. Misty, who I thought was my coordinator left before the ceremony began so my now husband was making all of the executive decisions about what to do. We didn't have any staff the talk to and let them know what they needed to do. Also, after the thunderstorm passed, they just decided to not set anything up at all. I had a DIY wedding so I had a lot of cute decorations and hundreds of candles. Of course, since the staff disappeared and did not want to set it up, I know have a massive amount of left-over wedding decorations that were never even used. The one positive thing I have to say about this venue is that the food was great! Everyone loved it. Overall, I would just suggest that you need to have someone on the actual wedding day to tell the staff EXACTLY what to do. (I thought that I had done this with diagrams and pictures and grouped, labeled decorations, but apparently they need more direction than that.) The food is great and the venue is very nice for a rustic, beach wedding. But don't expect much from the staff and just know that you are going to have to nag them about every little thing along the way. read more

Visited w/ my family while staying at Sea Island. It was our one "culinary excursion" outside of the resort - and it was the best meal of the trip. While everything we had was excellent - I hate saying this - it's the cheeseburger I split with my wife that I can't get out of my head - perfection. Appetizer and cocktails were great along w/ wine selection, service was very attentive, and what really set them apart was treating my young children very nicely in a 'classy' style restaurant (no snob factor). I couldn't recommend this restaurant any higher. It's first on our list during our next visit to the Georgia coast. read more

We just had a very disappointing dinner at Halyards Restaurant this evening. We were a party of 7 people and started out ordering 8 appetizers to share, then proceeded to order entrees. After each person ordered a main course, our waiter asked "bisque or salad?" At that time we were under the assumption the main courses came with bisque or salad - otherwise why would any waiter ask a diner to order an additional appetizer? Instead of asking if we wanted an additional bisque or salad as an appetizer at an additional cost, it was worded in such a way as to be deceptive. I was not so hungry and wanted to share the New York strip steak with my 14 year old daughter, so told the waiter this. He then suggested I order the scallops because he said the scallops were not a huge portion. He then asked me as well if I wanted bisque or salad after I had just told him I wasn't very hungry. I foolishly agreed to do this despite knowing we had ordered so many appetizers and knowing my young daughter didn't have much of an appetite. He did not bother to mention the fact that the New York strip steak was a very generous portion. Normally this would not have been a big deal but in the context of having already ordered much too much food under the guidance of this waiter, it's just another dish we didn't need. Then other extra charges came when the waiter asked if my sister wanted sherry in the bisque and my daughter wanted anchovies in the Caesar salad. Normally doesn't a good bisque have sherry in it and a good Caesar salad have anchovies in it? Again instead of telling us that these were additional charges, the waiter asked in a manner that led us to believe they came with these dishes. I have worked for over a decade as a chef and also front of the house in the restaurant business as well as to have eaten at numerous restaurants high and low, and have never come across such blatant misleading sales practices of a waiter. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone despite the fact that the food was actually good. read more

Excellent! Was on vacation with my BF and decided to go for one nice dinner. Our server was outstanding! Extremely nice. Took our picture. Made small talk. Happily answered questions about the menu. The blue crab bisque was very good. My BF loved the bacon appetizer. I had the Sheepshead special, which was excellent and my BF had the Scottish Salmon, which was also very good.
