Won't be back. Had a reservation but still had to wait 25 min to be seated... They overseat at the hibachi table, 10 people at once vs the usual 8. I was forced to eat on the corner of the table with barely any room, and up against random boxes of beer... Soup & salad weren't great. The soup tasted like water. The salad had almost no dressing. I also got my soup after the fried rice was ready. They forgot my appetizer and it took forever to get the drinks we ordered. The hibachi food itself was average. First time coming here was Memorial Day weekend with the family. The service here was awesome, and the food tasted amazing! We had a reservation from OpenTable at 6:15pm to catch some happy hour specials before 6:30pm, and Hanaya was not too busy. More people were on the hibachi side, so we'll definitely try that out next time. Our waiter was attentive and consistently refilled our drinks. We ordered a ton of dishes, but some of the most memorable dishes were the ahi tuna tower and the two lovebird. The tuna tower tasted very fresh, and there was a good amount of avocado to mix in. The two lovebird was a bit pricey, but all the sashimi tasted fresh and high quality. Standard ginger salad, which might indicate they use the pickled pink ginger in their homemade dressing. We both ordered the dinner portion of lobster at lunch. I should've stuck with the lunch portion for $10 but maybe next time. Extra garlic butter for the rice and we had a whole table to ourselves. This place wasn't what I was expecting, but I would say it's closer to 3 1/2 stars. I think from the building, area and name I assumed I was going to get a higher quality meal. Don't get me wrong, it was solid, and I even had another customer come up to me and sing the praises of a few of the dishes, so that has to tell you that they have fans! I was not impressed with the service. Well, let me clarify that, my server was fine. He wasn't very attentive, but he was friendly and he did give suggestions when asked. It was the blasé attitude of the rest of the Thursday lunch staff that bothered me, but more on that later. I arrived during the prime lunch hour, around 12:30pm, and saw the Lunch Specials menu. They have a pretty good lunch menu, mostly in the $8-15 range. Looks like dinner ranges from $12-40, but does offer more options. I'm guessing the portions must be quite large for dinner because the menu notates a $7 fee as a minimum plate charge or for sharing entrées. I'm a big bento box fan, but I was craving the heartiness of steak and wanted to try their hibachi. I told my server I hadn't decided between the NY steak and the filet mignon and he said the NY steak was his favorite. That was pretty reasonable at $10, so I added on a salmon roll for $5.50. I was a little concerned at first because my salmon was very pale, however, it tasted fine. The rolls are presented tall and skinny compared to other places, but this ensures they are rolled tightly, which is great. Looking back, I guess the roll was on the small side, but so was the price- can't complain about the price to portion ratio on the sushi. I wasn't blown away, but it did the trick. The hibachi wasn't as filling or satisfying as I had thought it would be, their lunch portions are 5 oz. The steak had good flavor overall, but was a lot chewier than I prefer. About three of my pieces were very fatty, which wouldn't normally be a big deal, but with such a small portion, it's a noticeable amount of the dish. My server said he really liked the mustard sauce and it was pretty good, I think it will appeal to most people. I honestly couldn't tell what the other sauce was, it didn't have a discernible flavor so it didn't taste like anything when I tried it. My steamed rice was good, though I wonder if I should have tried the fried rice since this *is* a hibachi place. I'll probably try that next time, I'm just a steamed rice girl by nature. The veggies were not tender. Maybe this shouldn't be a big deal, but super tender veggies are my favorite part of hibachi, so I was a bit disappointed. My issues with service, started from the beginning. I was left standing at the door, staring at the sign telling me to wait to be seated, for many minutes. An empty host stand doesn't make sense during the lunch rush. It would have been one thing if the staff was actively seating people, but they were huddled in the corner with their back to the door. When someone finally did come to seat me, there was no apology or welcome, just seating me. Seating me where I could then watch the hostess, who was finally at her stand, play on her phone for my entire meal. It was constant, and she even moved to a nearby table at one point so she could kick back and stay on her phone while it was charging. When the door opened she made no move to put away the phone, stand up or even straighten her posture. It turned out to be a delivery guy and she chose that moment to get my servers attention to help her. That wouldn't have really been the problem, but I was trying to get my check and there were at least 3 other people nearby who weren't engaging customers at the moment, so it was unnecessary to make me wait. To be fair, the hostess was not the only offender, but she was the most prominent, where everyone could see her. Look, this isn't enough of a reason to not return, but it does bother me to see a blatant lack of concern for customer perception. Whoever is the manager on shift, or the owner, should really address this issue. It was right in front of me and distracting... and it cost them a star. Shortly before I left I saw a chef go into the separate room with the hibachi grills and as I was gathering my things I saw the biggest set of flames (I was pretty far away) and heard the awe from the crowd. It made me smile. The place was pretty clean, the dining area was tasteful and the food was above average. The portions were a little too small for lunch, so order accordingly, but the prices were decent. The cell signal is pretty weak in this area, so you'll probably need to get the wifi password for your phone to be reliable. I would still choose a few other spots over here for quality and service, but I wouldn't mind returning to get a bento box or see a hibachi show. read more

Solid sushi in Flower Mound I have been here a few times for the sushi bar. I have not tried the grill but plan to in the future. Food I have been through the majority of the sushi menu and tried several of the rolls. For the most part, the quality is good. The portion sizes are generous for the price. On one occasion the hamachi was nearing its sell-by date and was tacky in texture and fishy in odor. It was not eaten. Beyond that single item, the rest of the menu has consistantly delivered. Venue This fresh build-out and has that is clean, modern, and slightly minimalistic. Some reviewers have said the lighting is harsh, but I did not find that to be the case. Service Upon entrance, customers are greeted with a warm smile and seated. I have never had anything but attentive service at Hanaya. Conclusion I can only speak for the sushi bar but, for that I think Hanaya delivers a solid performance. read more

If this review was only based on food, I would probably leave 3.5 stars. Unfortunately, the service was well below acceptable standards last night. To begin, I called on New Year's Eve to make reservations for a party of 5 for hibachi. I asked for a seating time of 7:00. The woman who answered the phone said they were booked, but could get us in around 8:45. I told her that would not work as we have a movie to see at 9:00. I was about to say goodbye and try another restaurant when she asked if we could come at 6:45. I told her we would definitely be there. She took my name and number and the reservation was set. We arrived at 6:30 and checked in at the hostess stand. The restaurant was packed. I asked how long the wait would be and the hostess said that everyone inside had a reservation and she would be able to seat us in about 20 to 25 minutes. We felt this was an acceptable wait and went to the bar to have some cocktails. After about 30 minutes, I asked the hostess when they would be able to seat us. She told us that we were next in line and they are waiting for a table to be cleared for us. In the meantime, several people who arrived after us were seated. They cleared a table and a party of 13 who arrived after us was seated around 7:25. We were still waiting. At 7:30, I asked to speak to the manager. The hostess said that the bartender was the manager. I spoke with Leo and explained that we arrived at 6:30, we had 6:45 reservations, and that we've been waiting for an hour for a table. I said that I would give him an opportunity to fix this issue. He asked me to wait and checked with the hostess. He came back and said that we'd be next to be seated. We waited another 20 minutes before we were finally seated at 7:50. After we were seated, it took about 20 minutes before the drinks, soups, and salad were served. After that, things moved quite quickly and we were finished with dinner around 8:50. The food was good, but not great. My problem with the restaurant is how they completely mismanaged the evening. First, if they were truly so busy, the woman I spoke with should have told me and not asked me to come at 6:45. We did as SHE instructed us to. I understand capitalism and they wanted to make as much money as possible. But, making a profit at the expense of customer service rarely works out. Second, they were grossly understaffed for the evening. I saw a party of 16 be seated and not get served for over 20 minutes. Finally, they all got up and walked out. Several people that evening walked out. Third, the manager was the bartender. If they were booked solid and had all these reservations, then they should have had a dedicated manager (or two) to MANAGE the restaurant. Instead, the manager was too busy pouring beers and making cocktails to oversee the proper functions of the restaurant. He was a very nice gentleman, but the evening simply overwhelmed him and his staff. My issue with all of this is that they treated us (and others at the restaurant) like we would be treated by an airline. They overbooked the restaurant, bumped reservations, were understaffed, and provided poor customer service. All of this so that they could maximize their profits for one evening. At least an airline would try to do something to compensate the customers they upset. The manger didn't even offer an apology. There is no telling how many customers they lost last night and how many others will be leaving bad reviews or telling friends, co-workers, and family. Their business plan for last night was broken and because of that, they have lost at least 5 customers. read more

My son made a reservation for a group of friends for Homecoming. The entire group arrived on time for the reservation but were not seated until over an hour after their reservation time. When their group inquired about when they would be seated, they were mostly ignored. I can think of any number of things (apology, dessert, discount, anything) that the staff could have done to be more hospitable and professional, but I assume that they decided that was not necessary since they were kids (High School Seniors). After I discussed the evening with the kids, I called the restaurant to speak to the manager. I explained the situation and asked for an explanation. The management blamed the hostess and said they were unaware of any delay. This restaurant is not big enough that a manager would not notice a group of six waiting for over an hour. I will not be visiting this establishment ever again and will definitely not recommend to anyone. It seems like you either love this place or you truly hate this place. I'm going to do this review from the perspective of someone who does not live in Flower Mound. Also as someone who just felt this place deserves some recognition. I came here for the hibachi and just to sample some sashimi. That being said, I had Nick as my hibachi chef and I am going to tell you that he was THE ABSOLUTE BEST HIBACHI CHEF that HAS ever cooked my meal. From the beginning to the end, we just have an absolute blast, and I have been to a lot of hibachi grill places all over the world. It trips me out just mentioning sexy Nick here in Flower Mound. Like for real? This restaurant needs to be in Dallas because some of these reviews trip me out. The sashimi that I had to taste because of the bad review were absolutely fantastic. We got some sushi. By far the freshest sashimi we've had in TX. And the California roll was delicious. We ordered Age tofu and that was good. The dipping sauce was perfect. My husband ordered the chicken katsu which he enjoyed. My mom ordered the hibachi shrimp, and I ordered the tempura udon. All of it was delicious! The broth was very authentic. The shrimp tempura is the best I have EVER had. Not our favorite: the house soup. Tasted like beef broth. We were expecting miso so it was a little bit of a surprise. So, the good. Food tasted ok, not over the top but good On to the bad. I ordered Filet with fried rice. I asked for no onions in my fried rice. I have done this many times at many teppanyaki restaurants and always easy to do. This time the chef made the fried rice and left all veggies out for entire table. Next up, the filet. The dude must have looked at the order ticket 52 times and still over cooked the filet for one person at the table, instead of getting another piece of steak to cook right he just shorted everyone else at the table with smaller portions. After a couples of years wanting to try this restaurant, we did tonight for my birthday. Most reviews are from over a year ago. The staff was friendly. Food OK. The place was a mess. Dishes still left on the hibachi table next to us. Stack of boxes, piles of napkins/ tablecloths in the Hibachi area and next to the bar. Aesthetically it looked messy. Bathrooms were messy as well. You would think in the area they are in with locals living on top of businesses they would be on top of things. Not impressed and we will not be back.
