Me and my brother came by this place late last night and ordered the Mien Ga. One dry and one with soup. The food came out with a strand of hair stuck to the side (not touching the food) and I placed it on the table, never intending to mention it to the owner, I didn't even mind. She must have noticed from the counter and came by to check and was apologizing profusely. We repeatedly told her that it was fine and not an issue at all, but she was adamant that she's going to replace the meal for me. It took her maybe 5 minutes to bring me a new bowl. I felt so bad for making her do all that but just the gesture earned my total respect wholeheartedly. I would continue to support her restaurant EVEN IF the food was mediocre, which it wasn't. I accidentally found Hanoi 36 Restaurant, and now I'm here almost every day. I don't speak Vietnamese, but the owner is incredibly sweet and welcoming. She always greets me warmly and often offers me tea. Even with the language barrier, she makes me feel right at home. It reminds me of the old-school family restaurants where customers are treated like family. The first time I came here, I was feeling under the weather and looking for a comforting bowl of soup. I ordered the regular chicken pho, and by the time I went home, I felt so much better. The broth was rich, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. I've been searching for the best pho for years, and this is honestly the best pho I've found. My favorite dish is the Miến Gà Trộn with dark meat chicken thigh. The glass noodles are perfectly chewy, the chicken is tender and flavorful, and the broth that comes with it is phenomenal. It's one of those dishes I keep craving and ordering again and again. I've also tried the Chả Cá Lăng fish dish, which was outstanding. I've sampled some of the pork specialties as well, and everything has been delicious so far. I still have a few dishes left to try, including the eel noodle soup and some of the other Hanoi specialties. The portions are generous, the prices are very reasonable, and every dish tastes like it was made with care. One thing I always notice is that there are usually older Vietnamese customers eating here, which tells me the food is authentic and well-loved by the local community. I'm so glad I found this place. I'm from Hanoi and for all the years of searching for authentic Hanoi taste in SoCal, this is the only place I can have that! Had phở gà nước, phở gà trộn, miến gà, bún đậu mắm tôm, chè bưởi. They are all delicious and especially of authentic northern style, which is savory and naturally sweet from meats/bones rather than being sugary sweet. Some hightlights: - The phở broth is not crazily salty and sweet like almost all the other acclaimed northern restaurants that I've been to. In fact, this is the only place where I can slurp all the broth from my bowl! It is nicely seasoned and sweet from chicken bones instead of sugar or MSG. And they give you lots of meats on top too. - Chả cốm is easily the best in Socal! The meat is fresh as you can taste it, and especially there's so much cốm inside, it's so nicely full of young rice fragrance. - Chè bưởi actually has a lot of cùi bưởi. They don't skim on ingredients on any dish. I have been and will be coming back for more. Small menu and all dishes seem to be carefully crafted by the owner(s). Foods come out fast, service is great. Atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Also, more trust in this place when I see the owner(s) cook(s) and also go around to supervise the whole operation, you can see their utmost dedication there. Again, I cannot press more on the holy level of seasoning here, never too salty or sweet like all the other (popular) viet places I went to, it is such a gem! I love this place so much! We came here on a weekday when they first opened. We ordered the dried version chicken noodles and clear chicken noodle soup. Everything we ordered was tasty. My dried noodle bowl can used a little more sauce. This is my first time eating the dried chicken noodle, not with soup. Although it is tasty, I would prefer chicken pho with ginger sauce dipping a little more. This dried dish would be good when it is hot and I don't feel like eating hot soup. Recently, I've noticed that Hanoi-style chicken pho and glass noodles are very trendy . I see many places offering Hanoi flavors everywhere. From my experience, the staff were very sweet and polite. This is something I highly appreciate and was very satisfied with. The food was prepared quite quickly, but for my taste, it was a bit salty. There was one small issue that made me uncomfortable. When I ordered bun dau mam tom, I was told it was sold out. However, a customer who came after me was able to order it (maybe they were friends with the staff and were given priority). Even though the owner came to the table of regular customers and recommended that they try the bun dau here because it's very good, I didn't feel happy about that. A new restaurant. They only have 7 dishes on their menu. Wow! So good! I tried the pho ga (chicken pho) and bun thang. The best bun thang in California. Hands down. My mom usually makes this at home and this bun thang is amazing. What makes it so good? The fresh chicken. The dipping sauce. And the broth. Each dish is made differently. They don't mix the broth. If it's made for pho ga, then they cook a whole pot just for the pho ga. They don't use the same broth for the bun thang. This is a sign of excellent cooking. The attention to details really makes this restaurant stand out. I'm glad to see more Northern Vietnamese restaurants in Orange County. So far, this is the best one. The price is very reasonable for the high quality food. What's the significance of the number 36? In Hanoi, there's 36 provinces in Hanoi. I had a chance to talk to the owner/chef. She's originally from Hanoi amd her parents owned a pho restaurant in Hanoi. I hope the family continues to pass on their family recipes through these amazing dishes for us to enjoy. We tried the food here 2 weeks ago and it was so good so we had to return. We came here this time on a Saturday around 11am. The dining room started to fill up. We tried a different dish this time: Bún Thang and Dried Pho Ga (not sure of the name). The food was so good again and satisfying; the broth was addictive. The chicken was so flavorful and tender. I had a very disappointing experience at Hanoi36. We clearly requested "NO GREEN ONIONS" because one person in our group cannot tolerate even the smell. However, the kitchen still added onions. When we asked for a new bowl, they only removed the onions instead of remaking it, even though the smell had already affected the broth. What upset us the most was the owner's attitude. Instead of addressing us directly, she spoke loudly across the restaurant saying, "This is the customer who doesn't eat onions? Why are they so difficult?" This felt very disrespectful. When we gave feedback at checkout, she blamed the staff instead of taking responsibility. Only at the very end did she apologize. If you're looking for authentic Hanoi cuisine then this is the place. By no means I am the expert in Hanoi foods but you would know quality when you taste it. The menu is not expansive since this is still soft opening period but there should be enough dishes to satisfy your craving. We tried all the items from the menu (again not a very long one) Chicken Pho (soupy): very authentic chicken pho and the chicken were fresh and tender. More than one occasions I heard some dinners requested bean sprouts, basil and ginger dipping sauce. Hanoi phos (chicken or beef) are supposed to be eaten as is and I understand why some people want to add veggie and condiments but that would alter the taste. I like both Northern and Southern Vietnamese phos because they're good in a different way. The owner told me she got complaints because the tastes of her dishes don't fit some palate but I appreciate her effort to keep her food authentic. As some dinner questions the freshness of the chicken I never tasted anything but fresh meat and the owner told me the leftovers chicken is given to her staff at the end of everyday. Dry chicken pho: this one is unique due to tangy sauce and if you add the special hot sauce (shipped from Vietnam) it would elevate the dish greatly. Mien Ga: simple dish but tastes much better here. Bun thang: I was a little hesitant to order this because this one you can make easily at home. Boy was I wrong. The both and the ingredients convinced me I would definitely order this again. Mien Luon (fried eels bean thread noodles soup): the broth alone is worth the price. One of my picky companions love this dish so I know we have a winner here. Gia Cay Hanoi: I love how the pork was cooked and if I don't have to watch my cholesterols I would order this EVERY TIME. I fact some diners would just come here for this dish. Bun dau mam tom : the cha com is the best I've had. The tofu is on point (crispy outside and soft inside). The service is always polite and friendly. I love how the owner greets customers with enthusiasm and loves to share her love for food and cooking. Foods like this can only come from someone who loves foods and their craft. She told me she would add more items to the menu soon if she can find the right ingredients. Tried out this place for the first time. Ordered chicken pho and this is what was brought home. Noodles were super hot which completely wilted all the veggies. I'm not sure why they didn't pack the onions and cilantro separately. The chicken did not seem very fresh, possibly cooked a few days earlier. It had some what of a "slimey" feel to it. No veggies such as beansprouts or basil or jalapeño, was told that pho ga from this region does not offer that. No ginger fish sauce for dipping. The broth was a bit too gingery, was not my favorite. Pho ga is one of my most favorite dishes so I was pretty disappointed with this version of it. I wouldn't recommend. Hopefully they take some critique to heart and improve. read more

I absolutely love Northern Vietnamese food. My mom is from the North, and I've tried just about every bún đậu mắm tôm spot in the area. This place is, by far, the most authentic I've had. It truly gave me that "wow" factor and made me want to explore more of their menu. You can really tell the owners put their heart and soul into each dish. The mắm tôm and cốm taste incredibly authentic. I wouldn't be surprised if they source it directly from Vietnam. The chả cốm is especially standout, so fragrant and full of that signature cốm flavor. The tofu is soft, fresh, and cooked perfectly chef's kiss. The pork is also amazing, so tender, juicy, and moist, which is hard to get right. I rarely write reviews and honestly wanted to gatekeep this spot, but it deserves to be more well-known. I'll definitely be coming back. Last visit I had chicken pho; this time I had "dry chicken pho" which came with a small bowl of broth. Other people in our group had different dishes and they were all very good. We came in Friday night around 6 pm. Luckily we beat the dinner rush. Restaurant seemed clean. Staffs were alright because they were both younger teens. The reasons i have this restaurant a try because my girlfriend is from HaNoi and they had pickled sliced garlic (from the pictures on yelp). My girlfriend loves it. However, we came in and i spotted, all of the pickled garlic were gone. It left with only jar of liquid left. I asked the boy server for more pickles and he took it from other table from a couple and gave it to us. The jar only had a few slices of garlic left :( sadly not enough. We didn't ask for more because the dinner rush started and there were only two servers so. Anyways we ordered miến gà and bún thang. Food came within the reasonable wait time. It was at the right temperature. Honestly the flavor of both, soup broth could have done better. I don't know maybe I'm from the south and we do love flavorful and when i tried, it was whatever. I've been here since soft opening day on feb 20, 2026, and been back multiple times since. With each visit I've always received great services, shoutout to Chị Hà! Came specifically to try miến lươn, which is something you rarely find in OC. It's a traditional eel glass noodle soup with herbs and they did a solid job bringing something unique to the area. Also for dishes like this, they're made a certain way because that's how they're traditionally prepared. If someone is extremely particular about ingredient to that level, it might be tough eating out in general, especially with authentic cuisine.
