The five of us went to Hanoi Soup Shop for lunch on a Saturday. I should've done my research because the shop was much smaller than I expected and barely fit all of us. There are two restaurants and Hanoi Soup Shop on the left is open for lunch, and the other one on the right is open for dinner. Even though the shop was small, it may have been a good thing because the AC and the fan worked really well and it was actually cool enough inside to consider eating pho on a summer day. The pho was great - I wish there were more greens, like bean sprouts and baby bok choy. My friend and I split a bahn mi, which was also really good. The sandwich contained three thick slices of pork. But beware of the sandwich because very spicy green pepper slices are hidden inside of it. I removed a slice after tasting a hint of it and I thought that was it. However, there was an extra slice further inside of the sandwich, and I took a huge hit and suffered for a good ten minutes - I can handle most of the spicy dishes in New York but I not this. Therefore, for those who can't tolerate spicy food, I recommend asking the staff to remove the peppers when ordering. I'm going to do that when I visit next time. read more

Stopped in over the weekend on a cold day, so a hot bowl of pho was perfect. On my visit, you could choose any combination of beef cuts of their classic Hanoi beef pho. They also have a chicken & vegetarian pho on the menu. I had a beef broth pho with brisket & oxtail. It came in a large, full bowl. There was more meat than I was expecting, which was a pleasant surprise. I would have liked more noodles tho because I still had a good amount of beef left after all the noodles were gone. While there's cilantro in the pho, you don't get a plate of fresh herbs and bean sprouts like other Vietnamese pho restaurants, so I do miss that. Yes, it's pricier than other pho places, especially compared to Chinatown. But I thought the broth was very flavorful, rich and delicious. The spices, like cinnamon, was stronger than other pho broths I've had. I didn't mind this, but some might find it a little much. Also had a Vietnamese coffee which was strong & dark as expected. Just counter seating which can fill up quickly. Service was attentive and friendly. I would go back for more pho and to try other items. read more

The food is top notch! I ordered delivery and got the summer roll duo and the papaya and watercress salad with chicken and ginger fish sauce. Everything was super flavorful and took me back to Southeast Asia. The summer roll duo was two rolls - one filled with Vietnamese ham/luncheon meat, and the other with crispy tofu. Both had crispy wonton skins wrapped in it and the textural contrasts were wonderful. The rice paper was also thin and chewy and easy to bite through. The papaya salad was excellent. I chose the ginger fish sauce (you could do a sweet soy too) because it seemed more authentic, and I loved the assertive mix of citrus, crushed peanuts, and fish sauce. Not for everyday or for the working lunch, but if you need to treat yo'self to a sandwich, consider this one. I recommend eating this at the counter; resist ordering it delivered or to go. A special lunch soup, at a premium price, and compares fairly to what you would drop for a nice lunch at a nice noodle bar in town or around the world. Same suggestion from before, dine at the counter if you can; serving these soups in plastic bowls with flimsy cutlery is an injustice. The HàNôi soup shop is Modern, traditional; and a slick and sleek operation on St Marks. Can't beat a lunch here and a stroll through Tompkins Square Park to follow it. Madame Vo + Hanoi House really did something to the premium Vietnamese food scene in NYC. Stopped by here with a friend yesterday and we split a pho along with a classic banh mi. The pho was delicious! And it was so nice for them to split the pho for us so we didn't have to do that awkward *can we have another bowl* dance. Their banh mi's cuts of meats were generous. I found the cha lua a little too thick where the flavors all couldn't marry together, however it was all still yum. It's so nice to FINALLY have a Vietnamese broth shop IRL, because it's so heavily engrained in our culture. Stop on by if you're looking for a quick bite and great service. For those comparing this establishment to those in Chinatown, it's about quality not quantity here. Eating here bummed me out but I guess my disappointment is my own fault because I ordered veggie pho even after I noticed it contained cauliflower. If the food was cheaper I'd be like "meh, I won't order there again" but it was what is pretty typical in this neighborhood: overpriced and not very good. The pho at this place is not worth one penny of my money - quite honestly one of the worst pho's I'd had in my life. Disclaimer: I ordered the rib eye pho to go for $18; so perhaps the portion might have been smaller than staying in... but most likely not. I am comparing this to previous pho's I've had at the Vietnamese places in Chinatown (just a subway stop away from here - if you can go to Chinatown, just go: Nam Son, Pho Bang, Grand Pho etc.). Price: daylight robbery; prices in Chinatown are less than half for more food. No additions of basil, lime, or all the items/meat that usually come with the pho. Quantity: I picked up all the noodles with my chopsticks, it was barely the size of my fist. The meat was chewy and flavorless and I only got 6 slivers. I've never been able to say I was HUNGRY after a meal of pho (straight. up. carbs. and I was still hungry). Plus, you can only choose ONE piece of meat? You can get $8 pho with ALL the meat of them just A FEW SUBWAY STATIONS AWAY. Quality of broth: Is. This. Water? Overall conclusion: Perhaps the banh mi is worth it for some people (other reviews on here), but even that looks sparse and prices are better at places nearby which specialize. Hanoi house is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in the city. They opened up a soup shop next door that sells pho, bahn mi, spring rolls, and some interesting drinks. You can sit at the bar or take it to go. It's half the size of Hanoi house so it's a fairly small shop and their menu is small. I tried their avocado smoothie and their spring rolls. All great. Noticed a lot of folks nearby ordering the bahn mi which looked great. Large size and and seem to have a lot of filling. I'll definitely get it the next time I go. Walked in here accidentally thinking it was Hanoi house, but definitely a happy accident! The place itself is very much a Vietnamese counter, self-described. It seats no more than 15 people max. The menu is pretty simple, covering the classics: pho, banh mi, and various drinks. The service is also really quick. The food itself was amazing as well. Bravo, this place is officially my favorite pho place in the city. First off I love the natural light and the ambiance here. It is much more casual than the Og Hanoi house next door. Really good! You order at the counter and then they seat you. The pork summer roll and peanut sauce to dip is delicious. I loved the special banh mi but I wish there was more pickled veg to cut through the creaminess of the pate. That's only my preference but everything was fresh and delicious.
