    G-Special Ramen
    Sarah M.

I finally gave this place another chance after not coming here for a few years due to the inconsistency of their ramen broth. When I first tried this place 5 years ago, it was phenomenal so naturally I returned a few time. Every-time I ordered a bowl of their tonkotsu, it came out tasting different than the last. I finally got tired of the inconsistency & never returned at least until last night. Last night I decided to give this place another try. This time around I ordered the spicy ahi poke nachos to start & a G-special ramen. The poke nachos were yummy, it had onions, creamy slices of avocado, tiny cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices paired with taro chips. My only complaint is that I paid $20 for it & barely got any poke. They sat the poke on a bed of lettuce to make it appear like there was more poke. If it was cheaper, I could justify the portion but for $20, I was expecting a little more. There was so much salad & chips & barely any poke. The G-special was alright. Not exactly my cup of tea. The broth had a nice kick but all I could taste was the sesame oil. The egg also was sweet, not like soy sauce sweet but just sugary sweet. I really wish my experience here was better this time around but to me, it was the nail in the coffin which sucks because I absolutely love what they are doing here. I love the ambiance, the intimate & moody atmosphere, how they pair drinks with different bowls of ramen. I love that you order & pay for your meal before you are sat. But I unfortunately don't love the food or can't justify the prices.

Went to check out this ramen spot and it is definitely a spot to go to when the weather becomes really cold and you need something that helps you become cozy! I recommend try looking at the menu ahead of time since you need to order first before getting seated. They have a simple food menu but delicious in all the right ways, and cocktail menu is also a nice selection. Tried the Chicken Karraage Curry Bowl and the G Ramen both great! Curry is nicely cooked and flavorful with its spices and chicken is super tender. The ramen hit the spot to keep me warm but very savory and soft meat and just the right amount of everything. If you do like sweet cocktails, their mai tai is the perfect drink! Place is a perfect spot to hangout with friends or a date idea. Very simple but delicious.

THE TONKOTSU RAMEN IS AMAZING!!! I can not believe how incredible this place is. It's a smaller restaurant and you pay quick-service style, but there is plenty of seating available and the decor is super cute and cozy. A little on the expensive side but so worth it.

I've been to Hapa Ramen a few times because it's in the same general area that I live in Southeast Portland. I like that it's also a whisky bar so makes it fun to have cocktails when dropping in for ramen for dinner. They also have poke bowls but I've never gotten them, but I like that it's an option for a bit of that Hawaiian vibe. Overall the ramen broth and noodles are great. I recently tried the Hokkaido Miso ramen and it was milky and tasty, and the noodles are crinkly and chewy. I thought the thinly sliced cha shu, though, could be more tender. I think the go-to ramen is definitely their G-special, which gives a bit more variety of toppings. It's a great neighborhood spot for ramen with friendly and quick service.

I went in the afternoon around 3 so it was a very relaxed atmosphere with only a few people there. I sat at the ramen bar after ordering and found that the food was quick to arrive! Service was friendly and I really enjoyed the chicken curry. I wasn't sure what to expect with the pork belly but I actually loved it! Would come back again soon

Got take out from here and the flavors were very good! Also got a yummy hapa iced tea that was tasty and not too sweet. The fried chicken curry was delicious but the Hokkaido miso ramen was unfortunately flavorless. Super bland broth but the meat was good. Not sure if something just got missed when I got take out but would try this place again!

I would always pass by this ramen shop and be intrigued by the "ramen, poke, and whiskey" written in large letters on the window. Although it seems small and not very busy, I was fairly surprised dining in. Walking in, just before dinner rush, it was quiet, small, and had few people. However, within 30 minutes to an hour, the place became packed and there was no seating (it was a surprise there was no line for a wait). The inside was intimate and dim lighting, but had plenty of seating. Service here was fairly quick and so kind. My friend and I both had curry dishes, taro chips, and pork belly. Although all of the dishes came in HUGE portions and were delicious, my favorite was the taro chips and poke. I've never eaten poke in such a way and the use of taro chips was amazing. There was so much flavor and the poke was so fresh. I would love to come back here another time just for the chips and poke. Definitely recommend.

This was my first stop once it was safe enough to venture out from the ice storm we had and it was the best idea. It was packed and there a small wait (10mins) so it wasn't bad at all. We ordered at the counter and took our seats when our table was ready. We sat at the bar counter which was a cozy setting. I got the whiskey sour and the tonkotsu ramen which warmed me up real quick. The broth was salted well enough and it was flavorful without being overly powering. The pork belly was cooked and crisped to perfection. A great choice on a cold and icy night!

Looking for the best ramen in Portland, or the world? Look no further... this is literally the best ramen you will ever try. The only issue is not having enough money to eat here everyday. Service is great. Ambiance is even better.

Are there any gluten free options?

Hapa PDX does have Rice Bowl options and some Izakaya (small plates) choices. As for the noodles, I believe there wasn't an option for gluten-free.

It's clear there's intention and skill behind every plate that leaves the kitchen. Respect to the chef and the entire team for turning out food that speaks for itself. Cheers The Dutchman

I ordered the red miso, and there was sugar snap peas and asparagus, which is unusual. The individual ingredients themselves were fine but as a whole, it didn't taste like miso or spicy ramen. The overload of vegetables didn't seem to belong in a typical miso ramen dish (my go-to order) and rendered the broth quite bland. My husband ordered the black shoyu ramen, which was pretty one-note. Ota Tofu is one of my favorite spots in Portland for their amazingly fresh tofu, and it's right across from this ramen shop. Sadly, the tofu they used here was fried to a crisp, lost most of its flavor and had an unpleasant, sharp texture.

The meat on the luc lac has a nice char on it and a sauce that is almost sweet. Service is quick and the vibe inside is very trendy with colorful decor and lights. Great for a night out. For $6.50 this was massively overpriced. The ambiance is super cool which is why I think this place is rated so high. It is fun with all the decoration but not worth it for the food.

Food was solid, but I feel like the ramen was missing a bit of pizzazz. Lovely service and a nice casual ambiance. Nice that they give a whole egg (for $3) because the preset ramens come with half. Noodles were great, and pretty filling given the default price point. The kitchen brings out steaming bowls incredibly fast, filled with rich broths and excellent toppings with an efficient, straightforward dining style. Tonkotsu Shoyu (4/5): A deeply comforting and classic bowl of ramen. They offer a generous portion of perfectly cooked noodles paired with plenty of fresh vegetables like spinach, green onions, and mushrooms. The soft-boiled egg was perfectly yolky, but the dish would've been elevated even further with a slightly more generous serving of chashu pork. Tonkotsu Red (5/5): A unique variation for those who love a bit of heat. It shares the same chewy noodle and vegetable foundation as the Shoyu, but has a spicy broth that builds and ramps up the more you slurp. The heat was a distinct, subtle numbing sensation reminding me of Sichuan peppercorns, creating an incredibly flavorful and unique twist on a traditional tonkotsu base. Logistics Tip: This is a fast and casual self-service setup where you walk right up to the counter upon entering to order from the menu displayed on the wall. Indoor seating is limited to a few long, communal tables, so be prepared to potentially share space with other diners during peak hours, and remember to bus your own dishes when finished. But unfortunately the bowl was super small. It's a $4 add-on to the curry that you can finish in like 3-5 spoonfulls. Maybe that's not terrible as an add-on; I dunno.
