Happy Bakery is located on a busy corner on Irving St. We just happen to walk by and noticed all this freshly baked Bao's and and cooked food on a Hot table. There were lots of people in line ordering dim sum and pastries. Being the foodies that we are we had to try it, even though we just had lunch at Marnee Thai just next door. We ordered the Chinese sausage bun, black bean pork ribs, the egg custard pastry and the stir fry rice noodles. The quality of the food was not the best but the price was defiantly right. I don't consider Happy Bakery to be particularly cheap. They sell their food for $4.80/lb ($4.50 plus tax). And yes, they have those lunch specials (2 items plus rice) for $5.75 but Hing Wang on 8th & Judah gives you more portions for cheaper. TC Bakery across the street also sells 3-item dim sum at a cheaper price too. With that said, Happy Bakery has a larger and better selection of entrees and smaller dim sum items. They sell at least 6 different kinds of noodles here and some amazing deep fried chicken. My favorite item is the rice rolls cooked with green onions and tons of soy sauce. Overall, 3 stars seems pretty low considering I come here at least once a week. But it's really not the kind of place I'd recommend except out of convenience. read more

This is a long overdue review for their deli section. Bought a lunch special, 2 items with white rice. I asked for pork spare ribs and something else. I think this place rocks! The steamed pork bun is plump and delicious, and the bun itself on the baked pork bun is the best in the city. The juicy meaty chunks of pork make this a top baked pork bun in the country (and I've tried maybe 100 different ones)! Yet, it does seem like there's less filling these days. Updated 5/21/20: They are open!!!! Yes!! They've all got masks, plexiglass everywhere and social distancing signs. No lines in am. Very busy at lunch. May, the owner is the best! Come support! I got some pretty tasty stuff here last weekend! I've been looking around for a place on my side of the park for a while and this place was pretty well reviewed; it was also the cleanest place around for a few blocks. I got shrimp dumplings, Steamed BBQ Pork Buns and some BBQ pork Chow Mein. All fairly tasty. The Chow Mein was fairly greasy but tasted good and wasn't overly salted. The only drawback of eating here was you had to go to two lines and pay twice (for different things) but that wasn't really a big deal. read more

Cheap and fast food to go! Great variety of food! Not very vegetarian friendly, limited dishes to select from. I got the $7 two entrees over rice. The eggplant tasted like orange chicken, was a good substitute :) I definitely recommend the mixed vegetables! Its not too salty and went well with rice. The sesame ball is better than TC (from across the street). Parking is horrible, especially around 10am :( make sure to bring cash!!! Not good, but not that bad. We had dim sum on a Sunday afternoon. The shrimp dumplings were ok--not the explosion of flavor I hoped for, but plenty of garlic and tender shrimps. Siu mai was tasty but with big pieces of gristle in the pork. Barbecue pork bun had a nice texture to the bread, but the pork was again gristly and the sauce was a very unnatural and unappetizing shade of red. The red bean sesame balls barely had any red bean paste in them so it just felt like I was eating rice. Very cheap and fast, but pretty disappointing, so I doubt we'll be back. read more

I wanted to share this story about this woman's attitude so here it goes . I was just passing by and thought about buying some dim sum for my parents since my mom really likes siu mai and har gow. First, I went to the hot foods side and bought some spareribs, normal service. I spoke to them in mandarin English and Cantonese. Alright no problem there hence that 1 star rewarded . Now I turned around and went to the dim sum side and saw 2 stacked steamers covered with a metal lid with a open steamer with no lid but displayed a basket of about 3 remaining bbq pork steamed buns with a woman standing behind the counter expressionless. Naturally like any other human being would do, I smiled and asked her in Cantonese if she has any siu Mai or har gow left. She steps back, points to the English menu board and answers mockingly "do you think we have any or not ?? " then proceed to stare me down with a smirk and not speaking further . Okay btch if I had the time to scan through your loosely translated BS English menu of some 50 items and If I could see through metal lids I wouldn't be asking you in the first place. What is up with the attitude? She mad she didn't get into some debate team? It's a fckn yes or no question simple as that. I walked out pissed. I understand lots of chinese vendors give attitude but wtf her's is worse than the Chinatown ones! Plenty of dim sum places on Irving alone better than this bs with this type of treatment. I can write this review in chinese if I wanted to , how dare she points to the damn English menu and doubt my Chinese conversational skills :-o Food wise, it's like Panda Express, skin is thick for the har gow , also thinking about her actions downgrades the quality of the food even further. Oh how much I miss the smell of fresh dim sum since the onset of this pandemic. Eating it reminded me of the large dim sum restaurants with piping hot carts. Everyone was wearing a mask and the counter had a large plastic shield separating customers from the food, (very clean and crystal clear), so you know they are disinfecting regularly. As a non-Chinese speaking Chinese American, I hate going into these places. There is always this slight sense of embarrassment when you end up pointing at stuff rather than just asking in fluent Chinese! Alas. The lengths one will go to for dim sum. This place is an old standard for my mother and the service was surprisingly friendly. We got a load of takeout and she expertly packed it into our much too small canvas bag, wished us a happy Thanksgiving and sent us on our way. Definitely worth popping in. The Good: Happy Bakery has a nice selection of dim sum and hot dishes, all to-go. The Bad: The workers are incredibly rude. RUDE! When you come to the counter, the dim sum is in large steamers, and only the top layer is visible. My mom asked, "Would you please show me what you have?" The server rolled her eyes, turned her back to us, and drank her tea. So, we went to the hot-food side. We ordered spare ribs, and some sweet and sour pork. They gave us lots of bones, onions, pineapple, and sauce...and very little meat. Our bill seemed on the high side so we asked for a receipt. The receipt showed that the clerk had typed-in a bunch of random numbers...basically they had made up the price. We are Asian. If they did this to us, there is no telling what they do to non-Asians! Happy Bakery has two sides - the one on the left for dim sum and the one on the right for deli food. I've never tried the deli side, so my review applies to the dim sum side only. Like most other dim sum shops in the Sunset & Richmond districts, dumplings are 3 for $1.50. The selection at Happy Bakery isn't as wide as Mongkok's, TC Pastry or Jook Time - they have about as much as Gourmet Dim Sum. The menu is in English and there are pictures for some items, so it shouldn't be too hard to get what you want. They have Chinese rice tamales, egg custard tarts, steamed cake, baked buns (90 cents each), steamed buns, wife cake, mini moon cakes, rice rolls, etc. - your standard takeout dim sum items. I've been here a couple of times. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by what I had today: * Porridge w/ pork & preserved egg (rice soup on the menu) - nice and thick, surprisingly good flavor though low on preserved egg & pork. No scallions or ginger used. The chunks of pork are too big though. Pork needs improvement (marinate it? Use a different cut?). Good Luck Dim Sum still has the best dim sum takeout porridge but Happy Bakery isn't too shabby. * Har gow - larger than average with 3 or 4 medium shrimp per dumpling. More shrimp than you usually get, nice flavor, not too salty. Skin is thicker than usual. Served warm. Quite good! * Steamed chicken bun - I like how they use big chunks of chicken, scallions and shitake mushrooms. Could use more mushrooms but the flavor was quite good. Decent amount of filling. Seriously good Dim Sum. After visiting two other bakeries in search of Soy Drink (Sun's did not have it and neither did the other place on Irving) we finally found it at Happy Bakery. On the right side, they sell lunch and on the left, it's more dimsum like. For the lunch side, they have chow mein, rice, veggies, meats & etc. Dimsum side, they have bak tong gao (white rice sugar cake?), haw gow, siu mai (3 for $1.50?), egg tarts, various types of baos (most are $.80), jook (rice porridge for less than $2), donuts for jook... One time, my cousin bought $20 worth of bak tong gao & between the 4 or 5 of us, we ate half of it in one sitting, it was SO GOOD!!! Baos are usually big and I can never eat more than one, my fav are steamed (baked buns are too sweet) BBQ pork bun & veggie meat bun. The "Dai Bao" (big bao) comes with mushroom, half an egg, meats, veggies & that one is GINORMOUS but only $1.50 which can fill me up. My sis can eat one and not eat anything else for a meal, sometimes she can't even finish it. One Dai Bao and an egg tart, she's content. I remember getting the donuts for jook and it tasted fine but according to my aunt and dad, it smelled like alkaline?, so they made me throw it away. I would recommend any kind of bao, haw gaos, bak tong gao...anything I've had so far is good except the donuts. Lunch side, for only $4.15+tax you get rice & 2 items which is the special displayed on their front window. They've raised their prices, but it's still cheaper than Panda Express. Panda Express will probably only get you 1 item for that price. I don't know if my dad knows the people, but I remember getting like a pound of BBQ pork (which is only 1 item) that came with my lunch special. That was so worth it, normally a pound of BBQ pork is about $7 or more, I'm estimating...I like how the choy seems so bland and healthy, it's like I made it at home, and oil wasn't used too much. read more

This is a regular stop for me on my trips to San Francisco! I love how it's open very early in the morning, and the food is delicious while also being cheap! I've had both the dim sum and the lunch items there. DIM SUM They have a variety of items, but I mainly go here for the large buns filled with chicken, chinese sausage, egg, etc. I'm not sure what the exact name is, but it's the largest bun they have. It's absolutely delicious and unlike other places, they don't skimp on the meat. There's plenty of filling and the buns are huge! LUNCH ITEMS I've gotten dim sum here for years now, but this was my first time trying the lunch special. It still amazes me that even at 9am, the lunch items are ready to go! I tried this thick noodle chow mein (don't know the exact name since the dishes aren't always labeled) as well as the thin noodle chow mien as well. I was at TC Bakery across the street yesterday. I'm here today to compare. The price points are about the same and so for the taste of the country is more or less the same. Either place is terribly clean and both run by middle-aged Chinese women on a spectrum of crankiness. The congee is actually OK (4/5) stars if you do not mind eating out of a plastic bowl and using plastic forks. At less than three dollars a bowl, it is actually very good value.
