I'm always looking and wanting to try a good donut place, I see this Happy Donut with 4.5 stars, I'm kind of shocked as the Happy Donut locations are all 3 star at best as they do the job, satisfy your donut fix. It's after 1pm on a Friday, should I expect more than 2 half counters with donuts?? In any case, upon looking around I see the typical Happy donut selection, nothing great but enough to satisfy a craving. I didn't see trays of new donuts ready to be put out, nor any regular chocolate glazed, old fashioned or any gourmet types (maple bacon, salty caramel). They have cronuts, never had one, points for making it, but the filling I had with the cinnamon coating selection I can only describe as "creamy filing", bland, not very sweet, too unsweet, it didn't really go, disappointed to say the least. They had donut holes, I wouldn't call them cronut holes, with filling. I saw 2 types, ones with the bland filling that's in the cronuts and raspberry. I chose the raspberry, it was good. Store bought filling, not homemade. Coffee was ok, cafeteria/gas station quality but it was fresh and the lady offered me cream and half/half service was what I expect, the store, it's a regular donut shop, no thrills, in and out type of feel. Similar to other Happy Donut locations, this one gets 3 stars, but because I'm so disappointed by the high ratings (home town ratings)I'll drop it to 2 stars. 4.5 rated donut shop should have higher quality coffee, gourmet with premium ingredients, homemade filling and a bigger selection. I gave it a try when they first opened and it was so-so. I found their donuts a little dry for my taste, but I think they've tweaked it a little bit because their donuts have improved since then. I still think Royal Donuts has better donuts, but this place is convenient to my apartment. For a short time they were open 24 hours, but now they aren't? Guess it didn't work out for them.. I can honestly say it's the best donut in the area. Happy is how I feel whenever I get my Cronut Holes with custard cream filling It's freshly made in the morning and not too sweet like most other places. However the irresistible moment is the crisp crunch when you take your first bite. Then I will go for the chocolate glaze custard filled donut. Don't forget the apple fritters too. Every night after swim practice I pass by this doughnut shop, but have always resisted the temptation of coming in. Last night was the night I caved. I walk in, and there was a very friendly Asian gentleman who helped me out. I ordered half a dozen doughnut holes, was charged $1, and I was on my merry way out. As I was driving home and scarfing down my holes (they are MUCH better than the ones I've had from Royal Donut in Burlingame), I realized that after eating 6 holes the bag was still quite full!!! I pulled over to see what was going on, and counted at least a dozen holes left in the bag!! Say what?!? My expanding waist line said "DAMN YOU ASIAN GUY WHO GAVE ME MORE THAN I HAD ASKED FOR!!!" but my taste buds were screaming "THANK NOM YOU NOM VERY NOM MUCH NOM!!" Came for Maple Glaze cruller and decided to add a chocolate cronut. First bite off the cruller (from bottom to top) - Fishy? Could be the oil? Or it might be that morning bite right after your brush teeth? I set the cruller aside and take a sip of my Kona coffee, a bit watered down. Then I bite into the chocolate cronut which was good. Not great but satisfying. Soft not too flaky and chocolate was adequate. I gave this place a 3 star BC it's my first visit and only ordered two items. They have cronuts here! Unfortunately they often run out. The consistency needs to be improved sometimes they're too sweet or not sweet enough and sometimes taste too oily. My biggest issue is that buying the same order has gotten me two different prices by different employees. Either one is giving me a deal without mentioning it or the other maybe over charging me. I loved happy donut. We walked in and decided to try a chocolate cream filled cronut, a regular glazed cronut, and an apple fritter. All three were amazingly moist and sweet. They didn't look like they would be moist, but one bite in and you're instantly convinced otherwise. My favorite of the 3 was the chocolate cronut with whipped cream which tasted more like a better version of a cream puff than a donut. The guy at the cashier was very friendly. We were greeted upon arrival and he gave us the apple fritter on the house. I would definitely recommend happy donuts for all your donut needs/cravings. read more
