Originally known for their fried seafood, their seafood has been in decline for the last couple of years. It's clear that it's not fresh, but frozen. The shrimp are something similar you'd find in the frozen section of the grocery store. I recommend trying Harry's but don't get the seafood. Everything else I've tried has been very good. read more

Trying to get to Harry's was quite an ordeal. I was attempting to drop in on an old high school friend after 30 years of not seeing him. I found his house, rang the doorbell and found him not there. Bummed out, I left a note on the door letting him know that I came by. My wife and I decided to find a good place for a lobster roll. So we yelped and found Harry's but it was closed, or so we thought it was. So we got out of the car, and asked a random passer-byer where to find a good lobster roll and she said Harry's but we told her it was closed and so she gave us the name of a #2 spot. We yelped that place and that restaurant too was closed. So driving out of the parking lot, we decide to ask one more person, and he of course says Harry's is the best place. When I tell him it's closed, he tells me I'm wrong, that it's open. I show him the Yelp page that says "CLOSED" and he still insists that they're open. I call the phone number and sure enough, someone at Harry's answers. Yelp got this one wrong. Don't know how that happened, but it almost cost me a lobster roll! We went to Harry's and the funniest thing of all. It happened to be right down the street from my friend's house. Please note: Harry's is a small roadside diner. Here's what we ordered: LOBSTER ROLL--i liked it *a lot*. Lobster was tender and sweet. Very light mayonnaise mix. SCALLOPS AND CLAMS COMBO PLATE--Perfect plate of fried seafood heaven. I grew up a few miles down the road from this place. But I never knew about this place. I was in high school. What did I know about food back then? After we downed all this fried heavenly seafood, we decided to swing back around to my friend's house. This time, he was home. I got to meet up with him after all these years. I love perfectly prepared fried clams, and I also love restaurants that have been around a while and have their own unique vibe. Harry's has it all! I went to Harry's because I was on a dedicated mission. My son and I wanted fried clams and we were prepared to drive up to 30 minutes from our home in Natick to access them. After crunching the numbers (and Yelp reviews), our analysis concluded that Harry's was our best bet. Inside, Harry's looks the same as it probably did 30 years ago. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with comfortable booths and seventies style wood paneling. The restaurant is clean and well-kept, and just being there transports you to another time and place. My son and I were laser-focused on the clams mission (cole slaw and fries were mere distractions) and after doing the math I realized we'd be better off splitting a quart of belly clams a la carte than getting two dinner platters. My wife ended up getting a bowl of fish chowder and my other son got the Shepard's pie, and we all split an order of onion rings. Our serving of clams was awe-inspiring, just huge. The waitress split the quart into two servings on a single serving platter. After years of practice, I'm really skilled at overeating, but I honestly wasn't sure if we were going to be able to get through all of them. I was to be proven wrong. Quality-wise, the clams were 5 stars. I used to work as a fry cook at a legendary place on the Cape and I know a good clam when I taste one. These were golden brown, fresh and plump, and the bellies were perfectly clean - no grit at all. And they were fried to perfection (easier said than done). Perfect amount of crunch, not greasy, just right. The onion rings were also Grade A. Crunchy but tender, not too thick, no grease, and the coating didn't separate from the onion upon impact as is all too common. Again, just right. With a tiny bit of help from my wife, my son and I polished off the whole plate of clams and rings. The best news is that despite the absolute gluttony, I experienced zero indigestion. I was fully prepared to make the sacrifice, but to my surprise, nothing bad happened at all. In fact, I felt just fine. I've felt worse after eating a medium fries at McDonald's than I did after splitting a quart of fried clams at Harry's. That's a tribute to the quality of the food and their frying skills. According to my family, thumbs up on the Shepard's pie and chowder as well (although I really wasn't paying attention). The waitress couldn't have been nicer and she made us feel right at home. I know it's 10 pm at night, but you don't serve the customer cold food.' 2. Took forever to get a water, and never got a refill on it 3. For a 'cheap' fry join, it's pretty pricey They don't take credit cards, which should keep the costs down (Tech Pizza, for example) but the prices are much higher than I'd expect from your average diner/fry joint. Frankly after that experience I've avoided the place, and I'm unlikely to ever go back. In all fairness, it could just have been a really bad night there, or it could have changed since then. My mother and I were craving fried seafood and we stopped in at Harry's for lunch today. We hadn't been in many years, but the food was just as amazing as I remembered. I ordered the calamari and my mom ordered the belly plate. The seafood was hot, fresh, and fried to perfection. The french fries that came with our plates were also great. Harry's came highly recommended to me as a no-frills seafood place. What is turned out to be was a diner with very bad service and so-so food. I am a big fan of fried clams and heard that Harry's was the place to go locally for fried whole belly clams. The inside of this place looks like the restaurant that time forgot. It literally could be right out of 1970. (Right down to the dirty unwiped table tops) The first thing that hit me was the prices. These prices were not too far under what you would pay at a Legal Seafood restaurant for take out fried clams. I thought for the price, these clams better be very plentiful and very good! What came out was so-so. I've had better ... I've had worse. Honestly, for a few bucks less than they charge at Harry's, I would go to the Picadilly Pub and get the same portion and have nicer ambiance better sides and better service. The clams were typical fried clams ... the oil didn't taste rancid like at some places but the portion wasn't as plentiful as I had hoped it would be. In fact, I would say it was kind of skimpy because the clams came on a mountain of french fries, making it look much bigger than it actually was. Certainly not worth the price. I can't knock the taste because they weren't bad tasting clams, just not as plentiful and cheap as I would have liked given the atmosphere. The chowder was gross. It tasted like it had been sitting all day and was way too thick, almost like a white gravy you would put on country fried steak with lots of potatoes and hardly any clams. Skip that. I had a milkshake, which was great. Harry's offers milkshakes and ice cream sodas, which again goes with the retro vibe. Unfortunately, the fact that they serve ice cream also brings another problem to Harry's. Crowds of foul mouthed teenagers sit in the booths and scream obscenities at each other in groups. I must have heard the F-Word 10 or 15 times in about 20 minutes from the group of teens at the table next to me. There was another table of loud teens a few tables down as well. This place might be a good place to take the families for cheap burgers and fries, if not for all the teenage groups hanging around having X Rated conversations. In terms of the lobster roll ... skimpy! The best place in town for a lobster roll is JPs in the TJ Maxx Plaza. You literally get double (maybe even triple) the lobster meat there for less money. Also, the JPs lobster roll doesn't have as much of a mayonaisey sauce to disguise the flavor of lobster as Harry's does. If you do end up going to JPs for the Lobster Roll, for gosh sakes don't tell anyone about it because if you do, they will raise the prices. It is a real deal bargain ... Harry's not so much. This is a little roadside dive that I believe has got a reputation as 'the place' to go for fried clams due to the fact that it has been there for years and apparently hasn't changed one bit since then. I don't see anything special about the fried clams at this place (other than the fact that they serve them year round) and would much rather go to the Picadilly or drive 10 minutes to Legal Seafood in Natick than pay just as much or more at Harry's. I was very dissapointed with this because before going there ... I really did hope I had found my new clam place. If you want a kitchy, dirty hole in the wall 70s style diner for the sake of the 'retro' aspect or are shooting a movie about a small town dive restaurant ... this is a great place, if you don't mind sitting through a real life scene from Superbad because of all the potty mouthed teens. You won't be wowed at Harry's but you will get what you would at any other similar place. Another pain in the rump is that I don't believe they take credit cards. But I could be wrong about that ... the person who recommended it to me told me to bring cash, so I did. read more

It's a diner and not a particularly good one at that. I went there for brunch and one would think that a diner would have decent brunch items, but I was disappointed. I wanted a waffle and they didn't have it. In the end, I ordered a standard breakfast item with pancake, sausage, bacon and orange juice. The pancake and bacon was ok. The orange juice came in a kid size cup and the sausages didn't taste too great either. The waitress was nice, but it took a long time before she brought us water. Belly Clams for my big belly. The Tuesday special is incredible. Two seafood items plus coleslaw and fries for under 10 bucks! The menu looks like it could be filled with usual diner booby traps, but if you can logically figure out they do best (their logo is a clam with legs) I don't think you can go wrong! On top of that, get the sundaes here! Guaranteed to turn any frown upside down, the sundaes are delish, large, and full of ice cream. As an ice cream enthusiast, my girlfriend watched in horror as I scoffed my and most of her portions. I grew up in Westborough and have eaten at Harry's dozens of times over the past twenty years. My plan today was to fill up on fried seafood and come home and write a five star review on Yelp. But obviously that didn't happen. Some things never change. Same menu, same goofy cartoon pictures of menu items on the wall, same cash only, same soft drinks served with loads of pebble ice... But based on today's visit it seems that one thing may have changed at Harry's: the food. Portions were smaller than they used to be (not necessarily a bad thing). And it didn't taste as good. Harry's Haddock Plate used to be the best thing ever. This time the fish and french fries were flavorless. Onion rings used to be shoestring, and today they were normal size. And bland likes everything else. Harry's gets three stars today, despite a two start meal, because I have had so many good experiences there over the years. But I will be back to see if this is a trend, and I will update my review accordingly. read more

Now I certainly consider myself to have a pretty sophisticated palate, but that doesn't mean that I don't crave some cheap greasy food every now and again. I was not impressed with Harry's. It was a HOT summer night. My husband and I couldn't bare the thought of turning on the stove. And we were both craving greasy food. All I wanted was to enjoy a sinfully delicious fish sandwich with fries. But for a place that prides itself on its skill with a frialator, the batter they use is BLAND and TASTELESS. And when over half of the menu is battered and fried, I can bet that the fried chicken and fried clams and fried everything else was just as tasteless. Not even salt made it better. And I don't mind greasy, but soggy is another thing. Ick! The only people I can see liking this place are people who have never been to the beach and eaten real, fresh, beer battered fish and chips in the summer time. Same for the clam chowder. The only people I can see thinking Harry's clam chowder is delicious must be used to canned clam chowder, not home made. And honestly, the prices are good for the amount they give you, but that's because they give you an ungodly amount of food. I hate that! I'd rather it be half the price and half the food, especially when half the food would still have been MORE than enough to eat for any hungry lumberjack. What a waste! Wow I re-read my review from 2011 and I feel like I don't know who this guy is. I've since converted and I love this place. The food is spectacular and I don't know if they re-arranged the seating but it's not as cramped as it used to be. I have two types of days-- days I'm eating at Harry's and days I'm thinking about eating at Harry's. I recommend ANY of the club sandwiches, every one of them has been stellar. A trip back in time to when restaurants were not corporate food factories. Menu has burgers and fried seafood, but also has meals like meatloaf. I had the special, which was a roasted turkey dinner. It was everything you would hope for. My Dad had the chopped sirloin dinner, which he enjoyed. My Mom had a lobster roll that was huge. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. We all shockingly witnessed the heavy female waitress with the long brown hair take a customer's fried clam plate from the cook, steal a clam, put it in her pocket, then serve the plate to the unsuspecting customer. She then went over to the corner by the beer taps and popped the clam in her mouth. Totally DISGUSTING! Don't steal from the customers to make your own appetizer plate. BUY YOUR OWN FOOD! Great breakfast... my wife and I have started visiting Harry's on a weekly basis. The omelets are wonderful (stuffed with fresh ingredients) and the corned beef hash is the best I've had in the area (made with fresh corned beef and potatoes, not canned). Iced coffee has no free refills, but the hot coffee is bottomless. The fried seafood is fresh, and the servings are substantial for the price. The batter is relatively light, but it has little flavor and falls off pretty easily... look elsewhere if you like a more substantial or seasoned breading. The lobster rolls are pricy, but have a ton of meat for the money. Get one with sweet potato fries for a real treat. The cheese fries are wonderful, but don't go for the added chili -- it overwhelms the creamy cheese sauce. Beers include the standard Anheuser-Busch products and a seasonal Sam Adams offering, good for late night or those Sunday mornings where you need that hair of the dog. read more

Had to pay a visit to Harry's while I was back in Shrewsbury this weekend - had been craving a lobster roll for literally days and time was running out. So. . .I set out to Harry's at 10 pm on a Saturday night in search of the perfect Lobster Roll. Harry's is basically the roadside diner that time forgot - with the exception of the flatscreen on the wall it looks pretty much the same as it did 30 years ago, and that is a good thing! Classic wood paneling, old counter stools, and even older waitresses who know their customers and the food. Since mine was takeout I sat at the counter while they assembled it. Great atmosphere, very casual and easy. The Lobster Roll at Harry's comes with Onion Rings, which is an unlikely combo but really works. After driving back to our room, I unwrapped this New England classic and it was exactly as I remembered it - giant hunks of fresh lobster claw with just a hint of mayo, nestled in a buttered NE hot dog bun. Heaven! The Onion rings complimented the sweetness nicely, overall a great combination. Only downside (and it was my fault) was that the lobster was room temp since I'd let it sit a while until I got home. Next time I'm eating it right there!! FYI - saw a bunch of folks getting the clam strips and they looked great, as did the homemade mac and cheese. read more

One of my favorite spots to eat after some mountain biking! This place isn't fancy, it's exactly what you picture when you think of an old New England drive in. Homemade pies, ice creams, fried seafood, chowders, and homestyle/comfort foods as well. They even make vanilla coke right in front of you, instead of buying the bottled vanilla coke... I know that doesn't seem like much, and maybe it's mostly nostalgia, but it's wonderful! They also serve beer (not sure baout wine or hard liquor). I'm always tempted by the homemade pies and the ice cream there, but I'm always too full to try. One day... The wait staff has always been super friendly and the food is always perfect. Your typical "dinky diner" experience and i say that in a good way. I find nothing as satisfying as kicking it old school at a local diner sometimes. Don't go here if your new year's resolution is to eat healthy food. This place has "Fried Food" written all over it, it's known primarily for it's fried seafood but it's by no means limited to the sea. There are tons of options for the land lovers too. I got the fried calamari. Mmmmmmm so yummy. And my friend got chicken tenders and a plate of pasta, I swear there was enough pasta to feed at least 2 or 3 people on that plate. Your world will not be shattered by the amazingness of the food here by any means but it certainly hits the spot when it comes to comfort food. Exactly what it should be. I come here almost every time I am in town. This is a friendly, neighborhood diner with a better-than-average menu, and good prices. Yes, it's a bit run-down, and yes, it can get busy - but there's a reason for that. You won't go wrong with the fried seafood, and I am a fan of the Turkey Ruben. This time, my friend got the Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese (yes, all one thing). It was both decadent and tasty. Folks expecting more of a 'nice-restaurant' experience may not love it. I've lived in California for 25 years, and Arizona 6 years before that. So when ever I get back the first craving I have is for great chowdah (has to be Legal Seafood). But the next must-have is full-bellied, fried clams (bellies)! Harry's Diner is an icon on Rte 9 in Westborough, between Rte 135 and Rte 30 (closer to 30) on the north side. They have the biggest pile of bellies for the price ($17.95 for the big belly plate includes fries and slaw as of November 2008) I have ever had. If you know anything about clams they tend to be seasonal so November is a tough month. Well this year they were full and meaty! The breading is light and they are fried perfectly. The fish plate is also wonderful with nice big pieces of haddock. The frappes are blended just right so they are not too runny and not lumpy. For you west-coast readers a frappe is ice cream and milk, not just blended ice cream. They also have woopy pies! Try find THOSE outside of MA. for an adventure sit at the counter - which is REALLY low, but you get to talk with the gals behind it. Always a treat, and the place is always teaming with locals. Harry's is a popular local diner that prides itself on good ol' fashion casual dining, friendly service and lots of fresh homestyle comfort food. Though I have never had their fried seafood, which is what they are known for, I have had breakfast and lunch and ordered a variety of dishes in my half dozen visits. All were great, well prepared, nice portions and served up with a smile. I work down the street, so most of my visits have been for lunch. If I ate fried clams for lunch on a work day, I would probably nod out at an afternoon meeting and whack my head on the table. That would not impress anyone. The menu is extensive so it's always hard for me to decide what to order, because it all looks good! The atmosphere is authentic 1950's-60's diner, with tables, booths and counter service that has those round swivel seats that are classic vintage. They do not take credit cards, but do have a small ATM inside. And oh yeah, I believe they now have made the woman's restroom into a coed restroom, so the guys don't have to go outside all the time (old school gas station style). They serve breakfast all day and into the night, and also serve beer! Their hours are as extensive as their menu, so give it a try for breakfast, lunch, "suppah" or a late night snack.
