My favorite diner. Small. Quirky. No credit cards, but they have an ATM inside. Men's room, on the other hand, is accessible from outside. The food is extraordinary. Walking in feels like a step through time, where you don't worry about the amount of saturated/unsaturated fats, every slice of life can be seen from dating teenagers to whole families to truckers, and there is no shortage of simple desserts to choose from. The only thing that seemed to break the image was the food served on tiny fiesta plates that could barely contain the food. The pricing is higher than Captain Marden's, but very reasonable. Tonight, I had a mile-high club sandwich, a venerable tower of 3 slices of rye and large amounts of corned beef and pastrami with sauerkraut and coleslaw that is not saturated with mayo, but letting the vegetables be the primary flavor. Also a massive pile of onion rings that are not your typical thickly battered onion rings, but simple, neatly separated rings in a very light batter, not overly salted. Ketchup here is in those wonderful glass bottles that I miss growing up with. I had a raspberry lime ricky, 1/2 filled with very crushed ice, a bit on the sweet side and lacking in carbonation, but flavor-wise very good nevertheless. My friend had a Zippyburger (a club hamburger on toast with fried salami) that I snuck a bite of. Nice, savory salami. The sweet potato fries are similarly light, letting the flavor of the vegetable dominate more than salt or batter. I've swung by here on my way to Worcester, grabbing fried whole belly or clam strips to go. The helpings are massive and I am not capable of finishing an order in a single meal, ever. Service is fine, though every time I'm there, it's crowded, so it takes... a reasonable amount of time to get to you. It isn't understaffed. This is a wonderful little stop for the nostalgia nuts out there with its quirky hand-painted red signs that ring around the walls of the restaurant. We ordered chower, outrageous; steamers each (1 lb bucket each), succulent, and then the Lobster Roll each. This was so good. It rivaled the Cape, and it is in our backyard! Evidently this place has been around since 1946 so they've had plenty of time to hone their craft. Over 200 items on the menue. Good old fashioned road food. I liked it. The staff are energetic and efficient. There seemed to be a ton of regulars there as well which is always a good sign. I've seen some of the reviews say the place is pricey. I had a pot roast dinner (adequate portion) for $13.00. Is that a lot? I really don't know. I'll come back and try the fried clams they seem to be known for. Nostalgic decor, big menu, breakfast all day. Good food, good variety. Don't count on getting anything healthy here, this is comfort food and fried food and the like. Try for a table unless you're small, the bar stools are cramped and awkward. The other day I decided that for the first time ever I was going to save room for dessert. So I had soup (seafood chowder, good), and a salad (nothing to write home about) and eyed the pie selection. Well, as it turned out, nothing in the pie case that day was calling to me... so I got a brownie sundae special that they had. Warm brownie (maybe two), a couple scoops of ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and mini chocolate chips. Holy moly. HUGE. It was wonderful. I cannot believe that this restaurant can survive as a cash-only establishment. But, they have been here forever. I've been to Harry's a few times for breakfast and they always hit the spot. This last time I ordered their spinach and cheese omelet. The waitress looked at me like I was on crack when I said that I did not want pancakes, or bread, or homefries (nasty carbs!). Instead, I wanted two extra eggs in my omelet - they wouldn't do that so I got them on the side for an additional $1.50. Food quality here is good. The motto at Harry's is "fried is a food group." So if that's your thing, this is your place. Tons of great food, wide variety, with a friendly old-school, wood paneling vibe. Where else do you still see waitresses talking on a landline with a cord connecting the headset to the phone? Heads up- $2 for a small cup of soda, and they charge for refills! I travel a lot for work and Harry's wasn't far from my hotel. I had calamari which was perfectly cooked. When I was sitting there I realized I felt like I was at home. The waitresses were lovely and friendly. The local people were laughing. It was warm and welcoming. Add in the reasonably priced, excellently cooked food and it was such a great find. OK. Where to start. Everything about this place exceeds expectations. Hands down one of the best diners I have ever stumbled across. It sits humbly in the same site it's occupied since 1969, unphased by the progress surrounding it. Like many diners, it has an extensive menu, but you will be blown away by many of the offerings. Everything my wife and I ordered was the very best we've had. No exaggeration. We generally eat a plant based diet but wanted to treat ourselves to something special...no tofu or chickpeas. We could not have done better than Harry's! Please go but dont let the word get out. The parking area is small and they probably would like to avoid hiring a traffic cop. If you do go, you must try the Mile High sandwich, although I nearly suffered from entre envy when my wife let me taste the cheese ravioli with pumpkin sage cream sauce (with grape tomatoes and spinach) and an apple cider mimosa. All from scratch. Ridiculously delicious. Did I mention the homemade grilled cinamon roll sundae with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and real whipped cream. Epic. We drove here from Worcester passing many other Restaurants excited to try it. Unfortunately, it was just okay. I had the fishermans platter and my sister had a chorizo omelet. On my plate, I got clams, scallops, shrimp and fish. The clams were good, the scallops were flavorless, the shrimp were those small ones like you see at an all you can eat buffet, and the fish was little pieces that tasted funny. It cost $25. Her omelet was good. Just average she said. And we got 2 pieces of pie to go. They were small slices and pricey for what we got at $5 each. The menu is huge. Its a very small place.
