I want to give it 5 stars, and I think it will be 5 stars in a year or two, but they are definitely not there yet. Overall the place feels like someone's labor of love. The food was good. The drinks were good. It was fairly cheap for the style of dining they are going for. I should also add, I am not vegan or vegetarian, I am more than happy to eat meat. The bad: - The dessert had a nice texture, but it just wasn't very tasty at all. - The first serving had a lentil "soup" that was bland and completely uninteresting. - You can tell they are new -- Ikea dishes and glasses, a little colder/breezy in the place than I'd like. - You can tell they are relatively inexperienced -- the pacing was slightly awkward, the chef (owner?) explained the meal and how the ingredients were acquired all at once before the meal, rather than with every item, which felt very awkward and long. - Plating felt insubstantial -- it just didn't seem like there was a lot of food from looking at it. - Missing bread/filler -- I like it when there is some kinda default thing to munch on or soak up sauces, and there was none. - I think the chef is afraid of too much flavor and that he seemed to avoid some of the more traditional flavors. Garlic, pepper, and maybe truffle were all flavors I would have expected more of. The dishes that were labeled as smokey, weren't all that smokey. One dish said something about cilantro, and I didn't taste any. One dish mentioned yuzu (I love yuzu) and it was missing the distinct piney flavor of yuzu and could have easily been replaced by any citrus. The good: - I was pleased with both of the beverage pairings. The non alcoholic pairings were all quite good and not overly sweet, which even Michelin starred places often don't get right. They were also fairly unique flavors/textures which I appreciated. The wines selected were good, and the last two (a barolo and a port) were very good. - I hate beets, but was served a beet salad that I found quite agreeable. I might even say I liked it! - The second dish (asparagus wrapped in filo dough with cashew cheese and white asparagus sauce) was excellent! - The third dish (some kinda ratatouille style soup with mashed potatoes and a piece of vegan corn bread) was pretty tasty. I really liked the corn bread. - One of the servers seemed pretty into wine, or at least pretty experienced at being a server in a higher end restaurant. - There were several bites that had a really nice spicy warmth. - I liked that if you show up early, you can choose your own seating. - I liked the music. - The seats that overlook the kitchen seemed fantastic. - The service was pleasant and reasonably attentive. - Pleasant/casual ambiance. read more

As a devout carnivore, I don't often eat vegan. Frankly my brain is generally trained to replace "vegan" with "tasteless." But when we decided to host a surprise birthday party for one of my best friends (a vegan chef) I knew we had to come here and am so glad we did. So. Effing. Good. The food was delicious, so lovingly and expertly prepared that I didn't miss the protein. And didn't feel overstuffed at the end of the meal either. A bunch of splurged for the added wine pairings which were perfect complements, specific to each dish. I realize this review is getting stupid long but I need to take an extra moment to highlight the service. The ENTIRE staff was just awesome. We were a boisterous group of 12, no 14, no 16 except a few people were only coming for drinks, and could we come early to decorate the room, and bring our own cake, and a few bottles of wine, and oh btw a few people have nut or other food allergies, and could we do separate checks, and OMG every single interaction was accommodated gracefully with a smile. Jan and her staff were always present, never intrusive, and gave our birthday girl a fantastic, memorable evening. So yeah. Absolute perfection! From the moment you walk in you are welcomed as if you are at a friends house for dinner. This isn't an ordinary restaurant and is set up to provide you with a food experience. The vibe is warm and relaxed and not complicated. Don't overthink dress code or menu. The menu is set and you can truly relax into the experience because they take the decision making out of it and you can relax. Sitting at the kitchen viewing table top is the best because you can watch the art happen. The Chef will explain that all food is local and relates to the season. The flavor and texture are truly food porn. My husband is a meat eater and is always skeptical at vegan restaurants because they tend to overcomplicate items and get to abstract with food. He was blown away with the food and loved every bite! The wine pairing is the way to go as well and can open your eyes to new favors. This was a magical experience and I highly recommend it. Seattle needs a vegetarian/vegan fine dining restaurant, and Harvest Beat tries very hard to fill the bill. It mostly succeeds. If you've ever been to Sutra, then you'll like the new incarnation: it's virtually identical, down to the ringing of the large bell and the rambling introduction of what you're going to eat by the owner. The chef has changed. Joe from Vermont used to work at Sutra and has been promoted to Head Chef. I don't know if he has quite the deft touch that the former chef has, but he does an admirable job. Same $50 per person for a 5-course set dinner, with $27 wine pairings or $14 non-alcoholic pairings. The first two courses actually come together: a soup and salad. We had carrot & ginger soup with a salad composed of beets, miner's lettuce,and walnuts sweetened with agave. I feel it's really ONE course, not two, because the soup is served in a very small ramekin, so don't expect a bowl. A cauliflower napolean was next, and it was probably my favorite dish. Savory layers in a tomato-based sauce. Entrees change all the time. We had a vegan gnocchi made of stinging nettles served with broccolini and abalone mushrooms. It's hard to make a gnocchi with no flour, so the texture was a bit weird. I applaud the effort, if not the final result. Finally, dessert was a vegan vanilla/orange ice cream topped with a chocolate peanut-butter crust. It was rich and satisfying. The space, in the old "Satay" location on 45th, is on the spare side. Two levels, with two different types of tables & chairs. Not much in the way of decor that could heighten one's experience. Overall, I'm glad Seattle has a Harvest Beat. It's expensive for what you get. A few improvements would really make diners feel that spending $125-$175 per couple was money well spent: first, get a liquor license and serve fine cocktails. Right now, it's only wine & a few beers. Second, invest in making the space feel warmer and prettier. Third, don't skimp by calling what should be one course, the first and second courses. Fourth, offer a choice of desserts, which the kitchen can very well make in advance. And it wouldn't hurt to offer an amuse bouche, as many high-end restaurants do. read more

I always appreciated what a significant and consistently terrific presence Sutra was for my herbivorous inclinations and how I lamented its departure. The care taken in sourcing local ingredients and creating a menu that gets better at every course is something I have never had the pleasure of indulging in! We sat at the chef's counter and were able to see the precision with which each course is prepared while we sipped on our all vegan wines and looked forward to what was going to be served to us next. From the cashew caper dressing on the ultra massaged kale that I haven't stopped thinking about to the lobster mushrooms in the zucchini lasagna to the perfectly sweetened anise sauce served with the pear cake, it all made it hard to return to 'normal' food the next week. Ate at the owner's original restaurant , Sutra, many times and finally made it to this bigger location. Our tasting menu included a kind-blowing grilled watermelon chilled soup, delicious cashew cheese stuffed morel mushrooms, and a chocolate vegan gluten free cannoli. It's impossible to review Harvest Beat without a comparison to Sutra if you've had the pleasure of eating at both. Over the last few years, my SO and I had made it a tradition to celebrate special occasions at Sutra, so this weekend when we went in to Harvest Beat for the first time our expectations were high. Even so, we were absolutely blown away. The owners and some of the kitchen staff of Harvest Beat are Sutra transplants, and it shows in the best of ways. If you're already familiar with the dining experience that Sutra offered when it was open, then know you'll be greeted with the same hospitality and stunning, delicious food you're used to. If you'd never been to Sutra, here's what you need to know: This food is amazing. The people here are kind and welcoming. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. Did I mention the food is amazing? Similar to the inevitable comparison to Sutra is the acknowledgement of the fact that Harvest Beat is a vegan restaurant. However, the fact that Harvest Beat offers vegan cuisine reflects only the ethos of the people who prepare the food, and in no way limits the diversity and depth of the courses you'll be enjoying. I myself eat meat and dairy, but after our experience here I'll unabashedly call Harvest Beat my favorite restaurant in Seattle. We were lucky to be able to experience Harvest Beat's Valentine's Day weekend menu, which included 7 courses instead of the usual 5, with multiple dessert courses, each more decadent than the last. Nevertheless, in spite of the chocolate peanut butter treat, the strawberries with chocolate dipping sauce, and the key lime pie, the courses that really stood out to me were the mushroom soup and the ravioli, both of which were perfectly prepared and had unbelievable flavor. In terms of ambiance, we chose to sit at the bar by the kitchen to be able to watch the chefs in action. I highly recommend this if you have the option, because seeing the chefs at work is a real pleasure. The platings are quite beautiful, and the chefs are incredibly friendly and excited to talk about the food. We spoke mostly with Joe this time around, who came across as very humble even as he was wowing us with each new plate he set up. Chatting with him between courses was a lot of fun. Overall, I just cannot recommend this place enough. I'm excited to see what the other half of the Sutra crew do with Mana restaurant in Leavenworth when it opens, but I'm also very grateful that we have the sort of dining experience Harvest Beat is offering on this side of the mountains. read more

We felt spoiled with the delicious vegan food that the Bay Area offers, and didn't expect to be blown away by this place. Prior to dinner beginning, Joe (the chef for the evening) made a short speech welcoming the patrons, and giving an overview of the menu. He explained where the ingredients were sourced, and translated the menu for those of us who aren't familiar with culinary terms. We celebrated our anniversary here and oh my(George takei style), the food was phenomenal! The dishes have so many ingredients, and this chef know how to balance every single one together in this beautiful harmony of flavor. The salad had a bunch of fruit, but didn't have an overall sweet taste(yum). The soup was tomato with a cashew cream infused with coriander, which took away the acidity of the tomato and you got this rich flavor bursting with tomato-ness(yeah that's a word). The mushroom course had these smoky mushrooms and wonderful Swiss chard. The main course blew both mine and my omnivorous partners mind! Stuffed cashew cheese pepper on polenta with an onion sweet corn sauce! I could have eaten ten of these:). The dessert had huckleberries from local foragers on cinnamon ice cream over chocolate zucchini bread. Although I'd lived in Seattle for many years, I somehow had no idea that Harvest Beat was here. I'm sorry it took this long to find it! I'm generally not the kind of dude to shell out a lot of cash for a meal - $20 is usually pushing my limit. Before my 5-course vegan dinner at Harvest Beat the most I'd probably ever spent on a meal was in the $40 range. With that as a backdrop for this review, there is not a doubt in my mind that the food I had here was worth every single penny plus tip. Every course was literally the best meal I'd ever had and it was the absolute perfect place to celebrate an anniversary with my SO. If you like vegan food, you'll LOVE every bite. You'll be blown away by the creativity and attention to detail. You'll appreciate the interesting flavor combinations and the drink pairings. If you don't love vegan food, you'll still love every bite. The portions were dead on. In fact, dessert was actually on the larger side - as we were so full by the time it was placed in front of us. That didn't stop me from finishing every last morsel and then coyly licking the plate, too. The service was A+. The ambiance was friendly and inviting. My non-vegan husband very thoughtfully took me to Harvest Beat for our 5 year wedding anniversary this weekend and it was everything I hoped for when reading the reviews. The first thing I saw when I walked in was a floral arrangement with a really sweet congratulations note from the owners (?) parents and I knew I would love it there. The group dining concept was fun and the food was really fresh and delicious. They had both wine and non-alcoholic drink pairings with the menu. We had the latter and they were perfect! The meal started out very light with soup and salad and ended with an amazing parsnip cake main course and raw cake dessert. My husband and I both loved the meal! It was on par with eating from the vegan menu at the Wynn/Encore Las Vegas, the highest praise I can possibly give for vegan dining. We will definitely be back for special occasions since it's a bit pricey, but worth every penny. read more

Made a last-minute res an hour before seating time on a Wednesday, sat at the counter and fully enjoyed it--possibly the best seat in the house with front-row view of the action in the kitchen and the opportunity to chat with chef and servers about their food. Interior is an elegant yet warm and inviting atmosphere. Flavors were satisfying and well-balanced, textures were nicely varied, kudos to Chef Joe for his creativity and skill. Front of house and servers were professional yet genuinely friendly and thoughtful, with an easy family vibe among the staff that made guests feel comfortable. I ordered the non-alcoholic pairings; some were more successful than others and I probably wouldn't do it again, but it was a good first experience. The overall volume of food in the five courses plus the liquids from the beverages was a bit much for me, but I finished most of it just to keep enjoying the taste. Without the beverage pairings would probably have been just right for me. Loved seeing the beautiful, vibrant raw ingredients in the kitchen and learning about them and the cooking methods, even though I eat omnivorously. There were a couple things I'd never heard of/seen before, which was fun. Admittedly pricey with the bev pairings but a very nice experience overall.
