Harvest House is a business I really like. The staff, whether on the phone or in the store is always helpful and knowledgeable and should I ask a question they can't answer they always get the answer. . Now on a restricted salt diet I try new recipes and they contain herbs and spices to liven up a somewhat bland flavor (I used to prefer salt and sour to sweet). I like the fact that I can buy a small amount of a spice and try it and if I like it know that I can get it fresh at Harvest House. This has made my transition in foods I am eating much more successful. I have been using Harvest house for many years (since I moved to Walnut Creek). If I could change one thing It only would be to have it closer to where I live so I could visit more often. This is a good natural foods/pharmacy store. I didn't expect it to be as big as it is - it has a surprising amount of food, more food than supplements and body care stuff. They have a good selection of both sections though. the staff is always friendly and helpful. I like their little baby food section, and they have a good amount of bulk stuff. I would shop there more often if I could afford it ;) If you're looking for a natural/organic food or remedy for something though, I would definitely try here. I know this will sound funny, but I really like a great bloody mary and a really good bloody mary starts with a really good tomato juice. Now I suppose I could make my own, but nah. I could buy the salty stuff from the market, but nah. Instead, I get the Knudsen organic tomato juice that brings a smile to my face on Sunday morning while I make breakfast for the family with my mary in hand. Needed Comfry Topical Cream for poison oak ... called to see if it was truly in stock. The cashier was very helpful and let the manager know we were coming. We arrived right at closing and the manager, not only let us come in to purchase but actually suggested a far better remedy at a fraction of cost. Wow! I just spent over $90 there yesterday and tried a product I hadnt bought before. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever put in my mouth! I called today and evidently they don't stand behind their products they sell! Because it had been open (how else would I know it's horrible) they wouldn't take it back! It's less than $5 and I spent over $90...it's not about the money but customer service! Everything about this place makes me never want to give them my business again. From their ridiculously over priced products to their horrible customer service and very unwelcoming atmosphere. Honestly, I am very surprised to see good reviews about this place. The employees here practically watch you like a hawk, like your a criminal or something, making it very uncomfortable to even shop. I've had a few bad experiences here, but the last time I was in, just did it for me. One of the employees that works here, literally snatched a product right out of my hand and accused me of opening the bottle??What a damn psycho, really? This place is a very mixed bag of good and bad. The Good News (the Awesome News really): They have one of the most complete selections of bulk foods & spices in the area. They have an excellent selection of (supposedly) "Organic" foods in the area (if organic is what you are into). They have an AWESOME selection of gluten free products. This by itself is a Grand Slam for people with food allergies. Their variety of hard to find products gets them a 5-Star rating for this category. More Good News: Bulk Peanut & Almond Butters!!!! :) (sadly no cashew butter) 4 Stars The Meh News: Their prices are on the high side- making Whole Foods look affordable by comparison. 3 Stars More Meh News: Their Customer Service sensibilities are pretty uneven. It depends on the individual employee- some are great and some have no business in customer service. 2 Stars over all. Still More Meh News: The atmosphere is very much like a Costco warehouse. For the price you pay, you would expect it to be more like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc. 3 Stars The Eeeeuuuuwwww News: If you are a person of traditional values, you will NOT feel welcome in this place. Most people are smart enough to do their homework and suss out what is safe and what is NOT (for them). Where Harvest House crosses the line is in their ADVOCACY of the medicinal properties of their wares ABSENT a licensed MEDICAL doctor or even a D.O. (osteopath). I've only been here a couple of times. I do enjoy looking around. But today will be my last time. Their prices are just absurd. They are selling Cliff bars for $2.05 each, you can get them for $.99 at Safeway and Trader Joe's or even better at Costco. A product I buy on Amazon for my children's immunity is double the price here. There are probably some products you can get here that you can't get anywhere else, but for my needs I can get much better prices elsewhere. read more

I was so glad when we discovered Harvest House several years ago when searching for a place to buy rye flakes and barley flakes as alternatives for rolled oats. To my delight we found much more. Their selection is incredible. I was so pleased when they also added farro and kamut, both favorite breakfast grains of ours. They are now also our supplier of beans, far better than the packaged beans I usually bought in one of the supermarkets. The quality of their lima beans and great northern beans is far better than any packaged ones I could buy elsewhere. The employees are also so friendly and helpful.
