PUMPKIN SEED ME The Walnut Creek man who recently won $33 million on Lottery, only bought his ticket becuase he had stopped in the store to buy pumpkin seeds. We bought close to thirty (yes, 30!) pumpkins in 2012. We seeded most of them and stored the rest for a couple months past October in cool, dry places. The seeds freeze well and I eat them year-round. So it's uncommon for me to buy pumpkin seeds. However, I recently bought some shelled seeds from Harvest House that were really, really good. I already want more! A chile flavor on the small seeds was just warm enough to make my mouth very happy. I don't know what took me so long to stop in here after a friend (Chris G.) told me about the place. Our recent visit provided a bunch of little bags of snacks. They carry the dry roasted edamame I like and we enjoyed trying new items also. I'll definitely be back to try some more new things. I've never heard of this place until recently when I was put on a new diet and looking for Ezekiel bread. It's located in a spot where it's very easy to miss and drive past, unfortunately. Despite its small size, this place is wonderful! It's like a smaller version of Whole Foods (so expect for things to be on the pricey side) except I believe has better customer service. I was approached by 3 different people to help me out and I found exactly what I needed: Ezekiel bread and a BPA free water bottle (which gets filled up with filtered water for free with purchase, otherwise it's 25¢ a gallon). The bulk department at this store is fantastic! The prices are excellent and there's great variety! There's many different spices, grains of rice, interesting snacks, pasta, and flours. There's plenty of organic options as well. The prices on the other items didn't seem that great, so I just utilize this store for its vast bulk department. I buy all my rice, spices,and flour here. Customer service: While walking in, I was immediately greeted with a 'Welcome' and a friendly smile by a lady that was replenishing inventory. Thank you! While browsing, I noticed another lady that was working there, telling this customer that 'MS patients should steer clear of Gluten products. Let me take you to the section.' Knowledgable and helpful. I didn't expect to learn something today. Products: Ranges from Organic Tea Leaves and Spices to Natural Cosmetics and Toiletries to Incense to Coconut Milk Ice Cream. Also they label their sections and have signs that say 'Vegan' and 'Gluten Free'. It's very organized. The only downside is that the place is located next to a lot of Auto Repair places. This has been to be my go to for herbs, etc. only because there is no other place in town, even though I doubted they vetted every product they had on the shelves. But now i'm done. I bought a sage stick wrapped in plastic there. When I took it out at ceremony, I gave it to the Indigenous Leader. Imagine my horror and embarrassment at the chemical smell that came off it as I unwrapped it. I didn't return it because frankly I was too busy out there fighting for the planet and you. I use to love this place... now when I got there the vibe is weird. I'm treated like I'm going to rob the joint... I went twice over this past weekend. This place is my go to for meditation candles, essential oils and diet needs. Not anymore So I go over to the oils. Get asked if I need help I say no. The lady just stands there looking at me so I ask her if she needs anything she says oh no then goes to the shelf behind me and starts picking up bottles and sitting them back down where she got them from.... while staring at me. So I'm like let me leave this section and go get the food I need I was uncomfortable. Get back where the cake mixes are... you guessed it. Here she comes! She comes to the aisle spinning around looking confused. Asked if I needed help again... nope I think I can handle the cake mix. Went to the front to get my candles now she has ran over to more staff and now I have more staff walking by me staring. I bent down to look at the incense male staff member came and hovered over me... so I said forget it. Went back to grab the oil I needed and went to pay... cashier looked surprised. Uhh yes I have money lol. 2 days later I went back. I was asked to make some candles for a friend and wanted them to smell oils and let me know what scents they like. We go to the oils. A different female staff member comes over immediately and said what are you looking for?? I say we got it. Continue to test the scents. She positions herself on the aisle in front of us and was moving things back and forth same procedure as the last lady. So when we finish looking at oils the person I was with asked me for diet tips so we went to look at snacks. We were followed to every aisle and watched... now in this weekend alone I spent over 250 in this store yet was treated like I was about to rob the place. I come to this store quite regularly and have been treated like this everytime but this past weekend was blatant, embarrassing and disgusting. The person I was with was a caucasian male even they noticed they were left alone to shop before I came in. As soon as I came in we were followed. I hate to say its because I'm black but what else could it be no one else was followed like this. I bought a vitamin and needless to say that I am allergic to it. I took it in for return and hoping to get a refund. Cashier looks for Elaine(manager) who by the way is full of attitude. She was extremely rude- will never come back to this store for sure. Cashier states she can't give me a refund, only store credit that I have to use it right away since they don't give store credit that you can use later. While at checkout cashiers should tell the customers that you have to be 100% sure when purchasing anything in our store since there is no refund on open items . We've been shopping at Harvest House for many years. Now our grown children have children of their own, so we have a third generation of Harvest House customers in the making. We've seen a lot of growth and positive change at Harvest House over the years, and I'm pleased to say that some very important things haven't changed at all. Harvest House has always put customers first. There is always a knowledgeable staff person nearby to answer customer questions or to locate a particular product. Anything we have needed that was not normally carried at the store, or was out of stock, has been located and ordered for us. Harvest House is well-organized and kept scrupulously clean. Along with a huge selection of high-quality supplements it offers many bulk dry fruits, grains, flours, legumes, nuts, spices, herbs, trail mixes, and natural sweets. There's a good stock of groceries, with many organic, vegan, vegetarian, paleo, and diabetic options. And there's so much more. Generally when we go to Harvest House it's on a major shopping trip to stock up, but once in a while we stop by just to enjoy the calm atmosphere and relaxed pace and to pick up a few of our favorite foods. For the second time in three weeks, my chemically-sensitive family member has come back from shopping here with a problem. We have trusted Harvest House to be using green cleaners -- after all, we buy them there! But when my family member sensed something wrong on this visit (started feeling a bit bad) and asked about whether the store had been using cleaners, they were told "We use Formula 409 but no place you would smell it", and "someone just used Windex on the glass doors". Both of these use chemicals that can "tox" my family member in such small amounts that other people wouldn't know they were around. My family member talked to the person in charge, who was the person who essentially pooh-poohed their concerns (without bothering to find out why the customer was upset with the answers they were getting). This manager/owner was evidently not informed about chemical sensitivity, and it is clear that although the store carries green cleaners, she doesn't understand why they are important to the customers and why the customers don't want to be someplace where non-green cleaners are being used, even if it's in the employee restroom! My family member wears a respirator in most retail stores, although it is difficult to communicate through it. We didn't think they'd need to add this store to the list, but now it's there. And we are waiting out another week of "de-tox" when activities are limited by the symptoms of an exposure. read more

Nay for: *being in a semi-hard to find warehouse (keep your eyes peeled for it) *their isles not labeled, labels on shelves are hard to read *layout of the place is kinda confusing Overall, a good place to go for people who miss elephant pharm. Get the rare stuff here like your supplements, pure gogi and acai juices and gluten free flour, but leave the bulk grocery shopping to Trader Joes. Save more money that way. read more

After following us around we browsed the rest of the store. Even after being treated like thieves we still purchased two items. Guess who the cashier is? Why haven't I ever come here before, I kept asking myself? I like health food and I like bulk food, and HH has 'em both. This place has the largest selection of bulk items I have ever seen. Yes, that's correct, my dear Yelper friends - bigger than Farmer Joe's and bigger than Berkeley Bowl AND bigger than Rainbow. I loaded up on organic red quinoa, a couple of different grinds of bulgur wheat, rye flour, forbidden rice, whole wheat pasta, seaweed, acai berries, blah blah blah blah and on and on. I got some much stuff that I am still trying to figure out where to put it all in my kitchen and I have already made several dishes, including home falafel and a fantastic soba noodle salad with seaweed. HH also has a huge variety of organic groceries, cosmetics, vitamins, beverages, gluten free products - you name it. The prices are reasonable, and the bulk prices are especially good - cheaper than any of the places I mentioned above. Oh, and just so you don't get the wrong impression and think I'm some sort of Birkenstock wearing kombucha drinking gluten intolerant only eats organic and hates people who don't dread lock sporting hippie chick, right before I came here I had a hotdog and diet soda from the food court at Costco - the real reason I was in Concord in the first place! read more

What do I like most about Harvest House? Three words: Clary Sage Oil. In my experience there are only two ways you can obtain this stuff. Paying through the nose online or paying through the nose in store. The difference: You save some bucks buying in store due to shipping. No other place around has it, and Harvest House has three different brands of the stuff. Thngs are a little bit expensive here but not overpriced. You get what you pay for. The items here are high quality so paying a little bit more should be expected. Plus they have everything here. Oils, pills, vitamins, nuts, frozen food, all natural juices, books, nic nacs and even magnets. This is your one stop organic shop. I have had nothing but good to great customer service here. The good customer service are the people who usually check you out. "Hi. How are you doing? Did you find everything OK?" and of course always with a smile. The great customer service are the people whom you can carry on conversations with. The ones who not only show you where the item is that you are looking for but will also talk about the different ways you can use the item, or maybe has a personal story associated with it.
