We went here twice during our stay in Bar Harbor - good service and good food. I highly recommend the paella for the entree and the proveleta (with the sausage) for a hearty appetizer. The scallops from the paella were perfectly cooked and as fresh as can be. My girlfriend got the duck and the lobster moqueca, but I thought both were pretty good, but didn't blow me away. I would recommend Havana to anyone looking for any fine dining options while in Bar Harbor. It's a little on the pricier side, but the quality of the food is top notch. read more

Missed opportunities is how I would sum up this restaurant. The cocktail menu has a Latin influence and so do the dishes but Havana falls short on execution. At the start, we were not served an amuse bouché however the diners directly next to us were. Our crab and avocado appetizer was good and the house made bread was fresh. My husband loved his lobster dish however I did not enjoy my chicken. I never order chicken at a restaurant but the description had me hoping for the flavors of plantains and papaya. The plantains were made into small cakes with absolutely no flavor. I did not pick up on any of the papaya either. The chicken was cooked well but that's all I ate from the dish. Went here for wedding anniversary. Service was efficient. Our server Ernesto was friendly and attentive. For drinks we had the Mojito. My wife felt her hers was a bit strong but we liked it. For starters we had the pumpkin spice soup. The pumpkin spice soup was delicious. We also had the crab and avocado which was good but a very small plate. We also had the garlic shrimp which we enjoyed. For entrées we had The seafood paella. It was quite good, the charred rice was delicious. It was a very large dish and we probably could've just shared this as we were sharing our food and could not finish this. We also had the lobster moqueca , we could not decide which main dish we liked better - they were both very good. For desert we had crème brûlée which was very good. Also had the tres leches but it was probably a poor choice on my part- just not my kind of desert. It was like white cake with a watery sauce but had good flavors. Like other Yelpers my expectations of Havana were somewhat biased based the many glowing reviews, however, in the end this turned out to be a very underwhelming evening. While I will agree that both the staff and wine list/options are impeccable, the food is at best an average meal in flavor. I consider myself extremely lucky to have travelled the world and enjoyed some truly amazing tastes, but Havana never rose to that level during the various dishes which I sampled. Let's start with the ambiance. The restaurant was cozy without feeling cramped or stuffy, the artwork was nice, and every table had thoughtful touches. Our waiter was extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive. We were seated on time for our dinner reservation and they even had a birthday card on the table for me upon arrival. The food was delicious, albeit expensive, and full of some great, unique flavors. The cheese plate was creative and our lobster and paella were substantial and delicious. The cocktails were inventive and really tasty. The ONLY negative was that the owner stopped at every single table surrounding ours talking at length with the patrons and then didn't even make eye contact with us or check in on how we were enjoying our meals. I know that we are young 30 somethings, but we were paying customers and felt a tiny bit snubbed. However, that will not deter us from coming back. For dinner we tried the short ribs and scallops. Both were very good. Good portion sizes, fresh scallops and perfectly braised beef. Both dishes were well executed with interesting flavor profiles. Positives: 1. Our entrees were excellent. Negatives: 1. We had a Havana Gift Card and intended to use it for the entire Havana dining experience - i.e., dinner, tips, tax - everything. However, when I presented the Gift Card to our waiter, he informed us that it could not be used for tips. This caused us to have to use our credit card for the tip, leaving a balance on the Gift Card in an amount that was too small to be of any real use at this restaurant for future dining. 2. This place was very fancy-looking and small, but it was very expensive and we didn't think it was great. We went there because it was the only restaurant open past 9, but we were not thrilled with the food or the bill. I had the $48 paella, and it was topped with burned rice. They mentioned that on the menu, but i didn't believe it would literally just be burned rice. It really ruined the taste of the rest of the dish. There was a good amount of seafood in it, but i have had paella for 2 people for cheaper than that. Based on the tasteless lobster moqueca I just had I will issue a 3 star rating. I also had the soup of the day, a butternut squash creation, and the Caesar's Salad, both maybe 3-4 star dishes. The soup was bland and the Caesar's lacked good dressing ....it was more like a mayonnaise dip. I want to slap myself for making the mistake of ordering some kind of processed lobster dish again...like lobster bake or similar, which is what this was at inflated price! It said on the menu it was made from "freshly picked" lobster and that was deceit. To everyone visiting New England: if you want sweet aromatic lobster order nothing but steamed. As far as I can tell that is always made with live lobster. Anything else is OLD / FROZEN meat sold to tourists and other unsuspecting or otherwise ignorant customers who simply don't know better. This restaurant reopened 4/15 and I celebrated my bday the very next night with my boyfriend. Everything about this place was perfect and I had zero complaints. Our waitress was so friendly and extremely professional. I kept complimenting the service and the food the entire night. She did a good job watching where we were at with each meal to give us time before the next dish came out. As soon as we sat down, we received complimentary cucumber side dish that had beef on top. I really wish I remembered exactly what was inside, but so delicious with a nice kick. The complimentary bread + condiments were all so addicting. I loved the blueberry cornbread with cinnamon butter. We ordered the mussels as our app and that may have been better than both our entrees. So much broth leftover that I honestly wanted to take it home to use it for everything. I ordered the seafood paella, which was outstanding. A lot of seafood inside and the portion was very generous! This place is a DIAMOND among rocks. It is difficult to find classier restaurants near national parks and this one impressed us so much. We were 3 hours early to our reservation, and they still managed to fit us in immediately. The staff and the manager both came over to our table and were so friendly and kind. We ordered soups, a cheeseboard, and the seafood paella. They gave us the most delicious warm, fresh-baked cornbread and dips as well as a starter mini one-bite try. Wonderful birthday dinner! This restaurant was the best meal of our week long vacation in Bar Harbor. There were five of us dining together, and we split a few appetizers and entrees. All were delicious but the paella and lobster entrees were our favorite dishes. They made the paella pescatarian for us and it was fantastic. It is a bit pricey, so it is not somewhere you would eat every day, but it is great for special occasions. Highly recommend making a reservation far in advance if you are there during busy season. We chose to try Havana based on previous yelp reviews and based on my wife's colleagues recommendations. The whole experience was average . What was below average was the jaw dropping portion to cost ratio. We ordered the scallops with pork belly . For $18 starter you'd hope there's more then 2 scallops... way over priced . I ordered the seafood paella which was decent. My wife went all out and ordered the filet mignon. Her steak was very tough and though the coloring looked correct (medium) it didn't taste like filet mignon. In short it wasn't terrible but certainly wasn't worth the hype . After a long road trip from Baltimore, we were looking for a nice place to sit down and eat - luckily, my SO stumbled across this place while looking at reviews online. We called and they were able to fit us in a reservation. Upon arrival, they were not able to immediately seat us due to how busy they were, and were upfront and apologetic about the wait (we were perfectly fine with it, for what it's worth). Our waiter, Harley, was attentive and very professional. He answered all of our questions and suggested excellent wine pairings to go with our meals. The food was equally excellent - the rice in the Paella was a perfect texture, slightly crisp throughout. All of the seafood was cooked perfectly and as fresh as you'd expect from being in the area. The Halibut flaked beautifully. We finished the evening with a mango creme brulee dessert which was, again, cooked perfectly. I was a little surprised that they actually had cigar offerings to go with their extensive selection of spirits and dessert wines. It was a bit rainy of an evening, so I had to unfortunately decline. There was a table next to us that unfortunately did not have the same experience as us, and created a cringe-worthy scene with the waiter over it. This was by far our favorite meal during our latest trip to Bar Harbor. The place is pretty big, and we were seated out in the back building which was very nice. Staff were very professional and friendly. As for the most important part, all of the food was phenomenal. We really enjoyed everything we got, so I'm not going to list out all that we tried. I have confidence that everything on their menu is great, so you should honestly go with whatever sounds good to you. I can 100% guarantee that we'll be back here next time we head up to Bar Harbor. Two words. EXTREMELY RUDE. Called to inquire about reservations at around 8-9 for four people, and the man on the phone said "well I don't know... depends on what you mean, 8 or 9?" Ok fair enough. We asked about 8 pm and he tells us he has a reservation for 9:30 which was a bit late for us so we asked he if had anything earlier, and the condescending man proceeds to say "well if I had anything earlier don't you think I would've told you?" At this point we don't even want the reservation. OH then he magically tells us he has a reservation for 9:15 (what happened to telling us if he had an earlier reservation?). If you don't plan on being met with such impatience when you're on vacation and trying to experience a nice dinner, do not go here. Can't say anything about the food but service just turned us off and we won't ever be "inquiring for a reservation" ever again and will be telling our friends to stay clear. read more

Got to the host around 6:30 where we were told by a young male host that the wait would be 15-20 mins. We waited next to the street side dinning for 30 mins. The host took our name and wrote down how long our wait time is without taking our number. When the host called our name, we approached him. He quickly dismissed our presence and quickly proceeded to call the next party that came 10 mins after us. Without hesitation or questioning if we were just called, the host seated the other party as we stood directly infront of him. He then gave us a weak excuse saying that he had called our names and heard no reply and that the next table would be available to us within the next 5 mins. We waited an extra 20 mins.. When we finally got seated our waitress Terri was welcoming and attentive. Our table ordered the seafood paella, the lobster moqueca, and mussels. The food was decent, and came out pretty quickly. The paella was cooked nicely, wasn't undercooked and wasn't over cooked, the proportion was perfect for one person came with a few mussels, a few shrimp, two scallops, one lobster claw and a pinch of lobster bits. The mussels were a bit buttery and maybe too spicy if you have spice intolerance. The lobster moqueca was decent and light. Overall, the experience was good however it was soured by the host and how he handled the situation. It almost seemed like he did not want to seat us, maybe because of our race or maybe we were not wearing business casual attire. This Host should at least walk around to see if the guests are waiting prior to quickly calling the next party, especially if he is wearing a mask. (We did not miss his first call) Management should have the host take down guests numbers so that the host can contact guests to let them be aware of when their seat is ready. read more

Nice diverse menu with a lot of grilled meat. We had the cheese plate, pork adobo, lamb meatballs, grilled chicken and mixed grill. Sea glass martini was beautiful and good. The bread basket was delicious. Kids devoured the jasmine rice that came with the pork. one of the best places we ate in bar harbor. we sat in the back room which was a pleasant surprise, you wouldn't know this exists looking from the outside. we arrived a little early for our reservations to beat the rain, and they sat us without any issue. the 60 page wine list was a bit overwhelming but they would walk you through what to choose if you were stuck! The bread-delicious!!!!! Loved all the dips with it. We got the empanadas to start and they were spot on. I loved the sauce that came on it. It's not a bad restaurant, however I don't quite understand all of the surrounding hype to this place. We made reservations for a Monday which made for an easy check in process. While waiters and staff were friendly, the food is definitely on the pricier side and nothing to write home about. We spent nearly $150 and left feeling unsatisfied. For appetizer, we were recommended the crabcakes ($18). They were decent but I felt like the texture could be improved - it was a little too crumbly for my liking. Seafood paella ($38) - I really don't get all of the glowing reviews. This was mediocre at best and I'm not a picky eater whatsoever. It just tasted like rice with some salt and clams. There's no depth or richness to the flavor profile. Maybe I've been spoiled by eating paella in Barcelona, but I would pass on this "fan" favorite. Portion size is good though, so that makes me feel a bit better. Pork Chops ($32) - Significantly better than the paella! I liked how the flavors of the pork chop complimented the kale salad/potato. Meat was decently tender and I felt stuffed eating this. Wines - They have an incredibly extensive listing so kudos to them for offering variety. I got the recommended sauv blanc; once again, nothing to write about since it tasted like any other wine I get at the store. Overall, Havana is alright and more of a 3.5 if anything. I would skip adding this to an itinerary and go somewhere else for a more satisfying dinner that's bang for your buck. read more

Dined here for dinner on a mid-September Saturday. We put our name down around 5:50 and were told it was going to be a 35-45 min wait and to check back in around 6:35, we did that (check out bar harbor path/walk to kill some time). Upon checking back in, we were quoted another 15-25. By 6:45, we were able to get seated for a party of 7. We sat in the casual wooden open air seating (with heat lamps) instead of the fully enclosed white table cloth dining room. We ordered the following to share: a bottle of Malbec reasonably priced, bread basket (came with delicious blueberry cornbread, not overly sweet along with 1 more plain/traditional bread with herbed butter, hot oil and bean dip), 2 dozen oysters, farm salad (would skip but we needed greens), cheese plate (quite generous with portion size and accouterments), 2 orders of ribeye (proper cook to medium rare but we thought the side was slightly sweet), pork chop was tender, juicy and well balanced with citrus sauce, lobster muqueca (interesting dish w coconut broth), paella (ok- could use more seafood flavor). This restaurant is composed of 2 different restaurants and 2 different feels. The bar type is easy going and has a tapas style menu, food on the menu looked good. We did not eat at this side of the restaurant so can't comment on the food. We ate in the fancier restaurant and at first we did not know what were getting into. We basically saw the name and wanted to try it out. Little did we know that it was fancy. We had just come from a day of hiking and places in bar harbor close around 9pm and we didn't have enough time to change into fancy clothes. Most of the ppl there were dressed up in fancy clothes...oops lol. On to the important thing...Food! The menu is small, so guessing they change it up every month we had a July menu. We started off the bread and 3 different butters and moved on to the chicken salad. They were all really good!! The entree menu had about 6 options, so if you're vegetarian you really only have 1 option. There was a chicken, pork, fish, 2 beef options for meat eaters. I got the chicken and husband got the Halibut. And at first when I got it I thought it was not enough food, but boy was it filling. It was so flavorful and so so good. But got surprise for the overcharged for one margarita : $25 because of Don Julio tequila (1oz). Let's be honest. An average meal is $30, how come a drink of 8 oz. with ice could be that much? Manager came was reasonable, apologized and took care of the situation. No, it's not 4 stars. Havana is a pretentious place! We had reservations, arrive on time and still had to wait a long time. There was tables, but I figured it out later why. We where a party of 4 very mix ethnicity, the wait I can only assume after reading the other reviews is that we can be place outside in the back with all the other mix ethnicity people. I can be mistaken but after reading the others reviews I can't stop from making the assumption. The food was overpriced for no flavor and no seasoning, we try different dishes and they all disappointed except the paella. I don't usually leave reviews, But felt compelling to do so. Our server was cold and not attentive, the table next to was had a wonderful server, I guess was not our lucky night! No pictures because the food was not worth it. Just pretentious!
