I just got back home from a really good dinner at this restaurant. The black cod cod I had at this place was really good. The service was very friendly and attentive to me. The ambiance of the place was very fancy too. I highly recommend this place. Kinda pricey though. I give them 5 stars

11.25.25 The black cod was much saltier than expected, and I mentioned it to our server. It seemed like the chef was a bit heavy-handed with the seasoning tonight. Management- please ask the chef not to put so much salt on the food! Aside from the saltiness, the dish itself was delicious. Portions are on the lighter side, so if you're a big eater, I'd recommend ordering an appetizer or two. We were celebrating my birthday, and our server recommended the Meyer lemon chiffon mousse and it was absolutely amazing! The only thing we didn't care for was the fruit topping, which was a bit too bitter for our taste. Our server, Steve, was fantastic. Even though the place was packed, he checked in on us at all the right moments. Parking is available on the street or at the Performing Arts Garage. I highly recommend making reservations. It was our first time here and we will certainly be back. I will be ordering take out for dinner.

Simple, consistent, and reliable. Hayes Street Grille doesn't have stand out food, but it is a nice old-school place to go to after visiting the ballet. As a classical dance enjoyer myself, I rely on a reservation at Hayes Street Grill because it is conveniently close by. The portions are small and presentation may lack, but the food is always tasty and simple. I had the calamari which had a delicious smoky flavor and decadent lemon caper butter, the black miso cod, the warm goat cheese salad, and the smoked trout toasts. I enjoy that the presentation is simplistic but for the price I think an increased portion size would have been appropriate. The place features white tablecloths and pictures of local virtuosos. A nice place to go to if you are dressed up and looking for an old-school upscale ambiance. Its convenience and consistence is the reason I am a regular. Though the food is simple, the location and ambiance are enjoyable.

We had a 7 pm reservation for a party of 7 and waited about 20 mins by the front door to be seated. The food was not great. We all order some sort of grilled fish. My swordfish was bland and I could've made a better one at home. The fries were overcooked. My friends weren't pleased with the corvina or salmon either. Just a plus that it seemed to be local fish. The whole table agreed that we will likely not be back.

Tonight before the symphony, we had a chance to go to the Hayes Street Grill and had an excellent dinner. We started off with appetizers, which was a dozen Miyagi oysters then I had the black bass and my wife had the salmon. we had an excellent bottle of wine and I also had an old-fashioned. My wife enjoyed a Mojito. Everything was impeccable, including the service. We saw lots of people that we recognize there who were also attending the symphony. Our server made sure that everything was the way we liked it before we ordered it and after we received it. It was a quiet experience and the restaurant environment was very nice. Everything was moving the drinks the bottle of wine and the dinner came right on time on this particular evening we declined dessert, but I would highly recommend Hayes Street Grill

Great fried oysters. Fries are light and crispy. Coleslaw is fresh. Better if sour dough bread slices were toasted.

When we got there there was a line outside, and it was probably a 30-40 minute wait. We ordered the 24-Piece Oyster Bar Mix ($92), 6-Piece Grilled Oysters with the Chipotle Bourbon seasoning ($26), and a bowl of Clam Chowder ($23). Everything came out pretty quickly so we didn't go hungry for much longer after we ordered. The day that we went, the oysters that were available and were included in our mix were the Hog Island Sweetwater, Hog Island Highwater, Hog Island Atlantic, and Hog Island Kumamoto. As soon as our server pointed out which oysters were which, however, I forgot what he said immediately so I could not tell you which ones I liked the most. You can definitely taste the difference between them though and they were all great, but my favorite one was a little bit sweeter I think, and it was one of the bigger shelled ones. Thew grilled oysters were amazing as well. The shells were even larger than the raw oysters, and there was a lot of flavor to them. The clam chowder was definitely more brothy than ones I've had in other places, and not as thick and creamy. It was still good though and there was a ton of clams and other ingredients inside. Definitely worth a try if you're visiting the pier. It's definitely on the pricier side but you are getting what you paid for. I do wish that they automatically offered the supposedly complimentary bread to each table as they sat down. We saw that there was a basket of bread to the side of the aisle but weren't sure if it only came with certain dishes.

I tried their clam chowder, and it was fantastic. It is definitely more of a culinary experience since it is kinda pricey and the portions are on the smaller side, but everything is extremely fresh and comes with bread as well. Everything seems pretty classy, from the way you are served to the actual food presentation. The restaurant was even dog accessible, and we were able to have our pet sit right with us and enjoy the great view. Overall, if you are looking for a great dining experience, you should definitely come to Hog Island Oyster.

The hostess seemed like everyone was bothering her. We had to wait for a table (expected) so we had a couple different interactions with her and she said the absolute bare minimum in an irritated tone and both times I said "thank you" she just stared at me. Our waitress took a considerable amount of time to even come greet us. At greeting she already wanted us to order our food along with our beverages. It felt rushed after not being acknowledged. Once our main courses came we were never checked on until she brought the check. No water refills or anything until the check came and I had to ask. My friend started with the Hartford style clam chowder and it was the blandest chowder either of us had ever had. It honestly tasted like it came from a can. We did get this comped off, which was appreciated. The lobster roll my friend had was mostly all bread and mediocre tasting. Not worth the money at all. I had the squid ink spaghetti and it was completely flavorless other than the occasional burst of spice. It was spice without actual flavor though. I've never had a squid ink pasta dish that tasted like nothing. This was the most bland meal I've ever had at any restaurant.

I had the clam chowder twice, and it was just perfect--creamy, with lots of clams and potatoes. And then there is the **Boudin sourdough bread**, with that wonderful, distinctive "sour" flavor that seems to be missing from so many sourdough breads these days. One evening, we shared the **Mixed Seafood Grill**, which was amazing: wild-caught shrimp and three kinds of fresh fish--black cod, halibut, and salmon--served with salad and fresh vegetables. We started with the organic beet salad, with both red and gold beets. On another visit, I had the **Dungeness crab cake appetizer with a bowl of clam chowder**, which made a delicious and surprisingly hearty dinner. I was lucky enough to have **Tom as our waiter twice**, and he won my heart with a small act of kindness. At the end of dinner, I asked if he could wrap up my two remaining pieces of sourdough bread. When I opened the package later, I discovered he had tucked in a few extra pieces for me. I brought them home and was able to enjoy a little taste of San Francisco for several more days. Thank you, Tom! I also love that Scoma's hasn't tried to turn itself into another sleek, modern restaurant. The **old-school, vintage 1960s-1970s atmosphere** is part of its charm: waiters in white jackets, dark wood paneling, brown leather or vinyl seating, brass details, warm amber-glass lighting, wrought-iron dividers, and crisp white tablecloths. Walking into Scoma's feels a little like stepping back in time. For me, it was even more special because it brought back memories of **California days with my family when I was growing up**.
