I have many fond memories of this iconic and intimate restaurant while working in the neighborhood in the 90's and oughts. That continues. The French 75 was expert and excellent and our service was attentive and professional as per usual. But I expected more from the menu. All the standards remain, familiar and comforting. Execution of those dishes however was uninspiring. Both our mains (salmon and the roast chicken) were plated on the dry side, not as savory and toothsome as we recalled. The pommes puree with the salmon was the star of the dish, the asparagus was there to fill out the meal but nothing special. I would return but it would be for a light meal of the onion soup and frites with a cocktail.

This place has a very old school vibe with lots of classic French decor. We got seated in their side room for weekday lunch. I got their chicken dish which came with gravy, greens and fries. It was a large portion for lunch and the prices also are on the higher side for a lunch. My dish was decent, good for causal lunch. They also gave us some complimentary bread and butter to start

Being a native kid from San Francisco I would walk by LC when I worked in the Downtown area and it was always on my bucket list of restaurants to try. After all, it has a great story as being a bastion of where business deals were cut by folks such as the former Mayor Willie Brown and other movers and shakers. The former Chronicle Columnist would always throw in a barb or two about LC along with mentioning the famous Haberdasher Wilkes Bashford. On a recent Thursday afternoon, I met a colleague for lunch and pictured are what we had. Really enjoyed the coziness of the dining area along with the old school bar. Highly recommend dining here and capturing a bit of San Francisco.

The portions were tiny, especially for the high price tag. I didn't find this place to be authentic french food and the food they served was pretty generic. I feel like I could have been better off buying french Trader Joe's frozen dinner. I appreciated the service though and the ambiance was nice.

The food here is great. I loved the ambiance--it wasn't too dark inside like most French restaurants. The server was very attentive and recommended a Bordeaux that paired excellently with the beef bourguignon. As for the food, the beef bourguignon was very tender and not extremely oily. The onion soup had rich flavor and was very filling. As for the dessert, the crème brûlée was just good-- I wish the crust was a bit crunchier.

We were here for lunch, so not quite as intimate as it may seem in the evening. That's okay, because we were here with a group. Our server was pleasant and helpful. He was only slightly too familiar, but not enough to remove any stars. His service was great. We ordered several appetizers. I'll say I didn't eat much. We ordered the Dungeness Crab Cake Beurre Blanc, which looked delicious. The Escargot Bourguignon also looked delightful. I did try some of the Fries, which I don't see on the menu. They were delicious. I ordered a Salmon dish, which again I don't find on the current menu. I am 99.9% certain it was served cold and it was fantastic. I must say all the food was plated beautifully and everything I ate was very good. There are a gazillion and a half restaurants in San Francisco and the Bay Area. I'm glad we chose Le Central for our team's lunch.

Quaint, delicious, and intimate make for a fun evening when lunch was too much for a loaded meal. Happy hour is a great deal & all the kitties add up to a perfect amount when you're not ready to have multiple courses. Carlos was a terrific bartender; great attitude and courteous throughout our time here!

Really liked the onion soup - full of cheese on top and a rich taste - salty but sweet. Crème brûlée is also a highlight, very crispy on the top and not too sweet. The main was okay. The restaurant itself is a little old, their sofa has cracks on the surface making sitting there a little uncomfortable. The server was also not very available - we sat for ~20mins before the server came to our table to get our order, and they had to separate drink and food order due to restaurant being too busy despite we were ready to order both. Then he got our bill wrong and charged 1 extra item.. $70pp post tax and tip

Came here for the SF restaurant week menu. Decent sized food for the price we paid ($45 each) Service is good. Ambience is very good. Very few parties and quiet (we dined late at 8pm) we were seated by the window by the plants, I liked the deco of the restaurant. Belgian endive salad: beautifully presented, good flavor, the honey walnut is a nice touch to balance out the bitterness of the vegetable. I think adding some vinaigrette will make this dish so much better. 7.5/10 Escargot: this is my favorite dish. Great sauce, perfectly cooked. And the olive oil/garlic based sauce is a great sauce to dip the bread in. 8.5/10 Sole: the fish was ok. The fish lacks in texture and the sauce was alright. It's not memorable. 6/10 Beef: the wine was a bit overpowering however the overall flavor was good. And braised beef is very thoroughly cooked. 7.5/10 Chocolate mousse: was ok. 6/10 Crème Brûlée: was very good. 8/10 Overall it is 7/10.

We visited Le Central for SF Restaurant Week (Nov 2023). We enjoyed the 3-course meal which is a good deal ($10-15 lower than regular prices for the same items), but the slow service made the experience frustrating. The ambience was fairly cozy, with most parties seated somewhat but not too closely together. It took 30 min to have our order taken, seemingly because of the staff having to attend to other parties ordering wine. It was difficult to get the attention of the waiters. It was frustrating to have our order delayed a long time to give long uninterrupted attention to wine orders. We ordered the French Onion Soup Gratinée and Escargot Bourginon as appetizers, the Sautéed Petrale Sole and Beef Bourginon as mains, and the Crème Brûlée and Mousse au Chocolat for dessert. Most of the food was flavorful and not too heavy. Our favorite was the chocolate mousse which had a nice texture.

Located right by the Dragon Gate, the interior was cozy and decorated traditionally. Food was alright for its price. I enjoyed the cheese on the french onion soup but it was on the saltier side. Beef bourguignon was quite solid but nothing to rave about. However, I will say that they did a great job with presentation and plating the food.

Located on a…read morestreet corner with no signage, you'd be surprised to find such a fine restaurant with such little exterior flare. The inside of the restaurant is charming, with plentiful bar seating to watch as dishes are prepared in front of you in an open kitchen. The menu itself is constantly evolving and may be different with every visit. That being said, the main menu is a prix fixe 4-course meal with the option to add on 2-3 additional dishes to share. The meal starts with a amuse-bouche, generally a cold soup. For us it was a chilled golden beet soup, which tasted a bit like a nice, creamy sweet corn. One of the add-ons was the pâté de campagne, a blend of pork and fatty liver. Paired with a dijon mustard and fresh sourdough bread, it was surprisingly elevated for such a simple dish. Next were a pair of fish dishes that were the highlights of the meal, including sierra mackerel with fennel and peach, and monkfish and smoked butter. The monkfish was a particular standout as it was coated with a dill sauce, and complimented with the sweetness of diced rhubarb and earthiness of hazelnuts. The monkfish featured a smoky and lightly spiced flavor. The dish was extremely well-balanced and paired sweet, savory, sour, spicy, and smoky to a tee. Really excellent. The octopus and yukon potato was an add-on - the octopus was extremely tender, not rubbery at all, and the potatoes were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft like a mashed potato on the inside. The meal ended with a hanger steak which was solid, but compared to the other dishes, less extravagant. The dessert featured a rose sorbet, with milk foam and strawberries. As a whole, Mijoté dishes are simple, layered and extremely satisfying to eat. While presentationally may not blow you away, the taste will leave you feeling satisfied. The blend of French and Japanese culinary tradition and cuisine, Mijoté is comforting, elevated, and balanced. Very rare to find fine-dining that tastes so great while also feeling homey at the same time. If in SF, absolutely worth a visit.

We were all full to the max! We left happy and I was glad we came back here for an early Mother's Day dinner!

They put a lot of care into the cooking the onions, since they were nicely caramelized. This helped the soup flavor profile. With the soaked bread and cheese on top, it was quite a hearty soup. Beef Tartar: It seemed like the meat was diced small by hand, not mechanically processed into ground beef, which is how it should be. It came to the table pre-mixed except for the quail egg on top. The flavor had a nice a Dijon mustard tang. The portion of crispy crostini was just right for the amount of meat (many places short change you on that). Roasted Bone Marrow: Looks primal, with one large bone cut cross sectionally and charred on top. They added some Dijon mustard and breadcrumbs before the broiling, which really enhanced the experience. A little goes a long way with this intense marrow spread of crostini. Escargot: Traditional preparation, but I was pleasantly surprised that they added double escargot in every buttery hole. At first I thought it was a mistake, but then realize it was by design as every hole was filled that way. Such a nice treat. Duck Confit Croquettes: Three crispy dense balls with lots of shreds of duck inside. Plus a very pleasant presentation of sauce and pistachios on top. While I liked all the flavors and textures, I wasn't a fan of the fact that inside duck was chilled. Wish the whole ball was warm. Strawberry Fruit Crumble: Not what I was expecting for a crumble. Was more like buttery cookie crumbled on top, but it actually worked. The real star were the fresh strawberries in three forms: diced, sauce and ice cream. So delicious!

This plate is an assortment of mussels, bacon, garlic, white wine, cream, and parsley. Make sure you order bread as well, so that you can dip it into the plate/sauce . Staff is friendly and there's also outdoor seating which is perfect for the summer. This place is located in Potrero Hill, surrounded by other restaurants, bars, and a book store. Make sure to take a walk around the neighborhood after.

Again be prepared some things can be quite large. we also tried the soup of the day which was this lovely tomato basil soup and the pork chop which was perfectly cooked with another great sauce that i kept on dipping the fries in. One last note is the atmosphere it definitely feels like a nice cozy cafe that makes you wanna stay and chat with ur neighbors. Had a blast and i'm looking forward to trying their other entrees someday!

Flexible fine dining…read more Heard about this place from a friend and figured we would try it out. It was pretty easy to secure a resy on open table. The inside is dimly lit yet warm and the staff were extremely friendly. The intriguing thing about their menu setup is its modularity - choose between 3-5 courses with any combination of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Not being super big on desserts, we opted to share 2 x 3 courses, which was more than enough (too much) food. Seared Ahi Tuna 4/5 - Fresh tuna with a gentle sear, paired with avocado and an herbaceous dressing Seared Scallops 5/5 - Perfectly seared scallops on a bed of pasta. The earthiness of the cumin paired well carrots and pumpkin seeds. Branzini 5/5 - Fish was incredibly flakey with a satisfying crispy skin. Didn't know raisins and capers went together, but it does. Sweet and salty. Roast Lobster 5/5 - Can't hate on lobster when it cooked right. Edamame in mashed potatoes surprised me in a good way. They actually both have mild flavors with different textures and absorbed the sauce well. I used the bread to soak up the extra sauce Roast Quail 4/5 - Quail is always tough to do right. Their quails were really tiny, which was kinda cute and welcome (I didn't really want to eat a large quantity of quail anyway). The pasta on the side was al dente and the addition of lightly cooked spigarello provided a nice contrast in texture and taste. Filet of Beef 5/5 - Juicy steak, cooked medium rare. Potato gratin seems like the appropriate pairing, though I wish it was slightly crispier. Bone marrow bearnaise tied it all together. If I were to summarize the menu, it feels classic at first glance with unexpected ingredient pairings. They were quite intelligent about their menu in that they provide a solid number of choices. I did notice that they do recycle some of their sauces across dishes, which is probably how they get away with a larger menu. We were celebrating a special occasion and they did provide us with a complimentary cake and small bites, which was welcome. I am really glad we didn't order actual dessert because that would have been too much. They also give you a pineapple cake to take home, which was nice. If I were to go back in time, I would have not eaten the complimentary bread as it turned out I needed the stomach space. We haven't been back since 10 years exactly next month. Came to celebrate Father's Day , my bday, and anniversary! The 3 course went up in price due to inflation from $83 to $130pp. It's more expensive than getting the 5 course back then. 3 course is a good size to share for 2 people so you get to try 6 dishes. Cheese spread is intense but counts a dish for 4 Types of cheese. They bring the cart to you, we didn't order but saw many did. We skipped the appetizer and dessert to ge the most bang for the buck. We saw others getting salads though. Scallop, Lobster, Branzini fish, duck, Lamb, and filet Bonus starter soup My fav dish was the scallop Though most dishes I would say are on the salty side They gave us each a small dessert plate to celebrate Get to leave with the breakfast pineapple goodie Ambiance was a bit chiller than I recall though I was naive to fine dining back then. They do still fold the napkins for you when you step away from the table though.

The decor was minimal and nice, and definitely felt like a more upscale lunch spot. A majority of the group ordered the chicken sandwich which everyone said was delicious! The duck and steak frites were also a highlight for the group. I got the BLT croissant sandwich, which was tasty but I honestly didn't love their fries. The portions were huge and overall we were happy with our lunch! Service was phenomenal and they navigated serving a large party well. Even on a random Wednesday there were a ton of customers. I definitely want to come back for dinner and to try more of their menu items.

When we arrived, the host -- a blonde woman with a serious attitude problem -- tried to seat us at a cramped makeshift table outside in direct sunlight where there was heavy foot traffic. When we reminded her of our indoor reservation, she was annoyed and told us to wait as "you can see it's packed". Others who asked and didn't have reservations were treated kindly and told "ok don't worry". I was with my mom who was visiting and she is sensitive to direct sunlight which is why we requested an indoor reservation. While we stood there waiting, we noticed a white couple who had clearly finished their meal being (checked paid just sitting) allowed to linger indefinitely, while the table right next to them was being rushed out and asked to bag their leftovers "overthere" because the restaurant was busy. That contrast was not lost on us. When we were finally seated inside (also cramped -- tables are packed very tight), my mom nudged our table slightly to create a little breathing room from the couple next to us. Or at least make it equidistant between table. The same host walked over and told her not to move the tables. No warmth, no apology for the wait -- just another reminder that we were an inconvenience. I was confused about the treatment received. Can someone explain? And then the food. The omelette was runny and greasy. The chicken in my sandwich was so overcooked and dry it was actually painful to swallow -- I'm not exaggerating. I was so excited to find a neighborhood spot after moving nearby. This was supposed to be a lovely Saturday brunch on May 23. Instead, the host managed to ruin the entire experience before we even sat down. The food finished the job. We won't be returning.
