Smallest pho bow I've ever seen! There was nothing but broth, noodles, tiny bit of shredded chicken and diced herbs. How the hell do they get away w charging $18 for this? I'm a small gal and I was still hungry when I finished. Complete and utter rip off. Stingy meat and stingy even on the noodles. Would never go back. Visited Hanoi House on St. Mark's Place on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in June. During the summer, the stretch of St. Mark's between 1st Avenue and Avenue A is closed to vehicle traffic on Sundays, which gives many of the restaurants additional outdoor seating and creates a nice option for outdoor dining. A friend and I chose Hanoi House because they had outdoor seating available and a weekend happy hour. Happy hour runs from 3:00-5:30 p.m. on weekends and includes discounted cocktails ($11-$12.50), wine ($10), and several food items. Though during happy hour you are not able to order from the full menu. We started with the shrimp chips ($1.50), spicy garlic cauliflower ($14), a rosé, and a Hugo Spritz. The cauliflower was very good, a large portion with a flavorful combination of sweetness and spice. The Hugo Spritz was refreshing, though a bit sweeter than I prefer, made with a bit too much syrup. We were there past 5:30 p.m., and I ordered from the dinner menu. I had visited Hanoi House years ago and remembered the menu being larger. I ordered the lemongrass chicken wings ($19), which were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside without being dry and had a nice sweet-savory flavor. My friend ordered a second serving of the cauliflower and we each also had another drink. Including tax and tip, the bill came to about $60 per person. That is not inexpensive, although it included two drinks each and enough food for a substantial meal, even if not quite a full dinner portion. Overall, Hanoi House is a good summer option, especially if you can take advantage of the outdoor seating on St. Mark's. They are also well known for their pho, making it a good choice during colder months, and they serve brunch as well, though the menu appears very similar to their dinner offerings. read more

Fantastic Vietnamese in Wast Village. The poached shrimp salad is an amazing light salad; I didn't expect the various ingredients to complement each other as well as they did. The morning glory was good, but a little bland. The grilled pork noodles were fantastic; the broth, pork, and vermicelli all tasted delicious separately and together. We had a couple people each waiting to use the bathroom after dinner, and the second our last person got back to the table, the waiter appeared and rushed us out. This is the last papaya salad I will ever order. I want this to be my last memory of a papaya salad in life. The fried spring rolls just tasted fried to me so I'd skip that. The meat in the Pho was of top notch quality and the broth was completely different than Pho we've had before. This is an absolute must try for Pho connoisseurs. Came by for dinner over the summer and it was easy to grab a table despite it being fairly busy on the weekend; maybe we just got lucky. The food was all solid! I'm a little picky about my vietnamese food and thought this was a solid choice for us. The sandwich was yummy, but the spring rolls were probably my favorite bite. The herbs were pretty fresh and it was a fresh, crisp fry on it. The greens were a great add on, especially to get some veggies in there. Shrimp chips are solid though I don't know if I would get them again just cause I know how little they cost to make having grown up eating it. Had tried the banh mi classic and pho. The food was pretty disappointing. Had been wanting to try here for a while. The banh mi didn't feel like it had any pate or mayo. It was as so dry. If this banh mi didn't come with a side broth, it would've been as dry as a subway sandwich without mayo. The pho broth was great but the meat was crazy overcooked. My meat was not asked to be cooked extra, just ordered everything as was. The meat was so overcooked when it came out it was basically bending/folding over into a C-figure already from how overcooked it was. The meat was so hard to chew and had very little flavor in my opinion. It was the same for the banh mi, the same type of beef brisket it seems. Someone in my party ordered a margarita. Came in a wine glass half full. That's like 2-3oz of a drink for 16$. They said the drinks used to come out in actual glasses filled to a respectable amount. One of the only places in the city that you can get Vietnamese beer (bia hoi). I've been here a few times now and get the house special every time. I loved the House special pho!! It can with bone marrow and a fried dough stick. The broth is the MOST flavorful broth I've had in NYC. The size of the bowl was a bit small, but I was very full! came on a Friday night and waited about 40 minutes before getting seated for a table of two. The restaurant itself is pretty small and they have outdoor seating but it fills up pretty quickly. The interior is pretty dark, but it's not too loud that you can't hear. The service is pretty great and the waiters are very attentive and make sure that you have everything that you need. I got the classic pho w three meats which included filet mignon and oxtail. It came out to $22 which honestly isn't that bad of a price for a pretty good bowl. I noticed that it had a lot of garlic, which isn't very common for pho, but I really enjoyed it. The noodles were thinner than what I'm used to in other bowls of pho, but I genuinely really preferred this. the waiters were quick to also give condiment and happily provided me limes for my bowl. My friend and I also shared the summer rolls, but honestly, I would pass on this the next time. They had a good crunch, but it was a little too sweet for my liking and the peanut sauce didn't complement it as much as I would like it too. I got the classic hanoi style beef with two meats (filet mignon and brisket), and oh my god.. the filet mignon was SOO tender. I absolutely loved it, and the portion was pretty decent too, especially for it being only $19!! The only thing is that the area where we got seated was extremely small... After being in search for an authentic Vietnamese spot in NYC after moving here, this was the first spot that I went to. I made a reservation for two at 6:15pm for a weeknight though my friend and I weren't able to make it in time. I texted the number that asked me to confirm my reservation if we could push the reservation time. They said that was fine as long as we arrived by 6:45pm. It does come with cilantro and green onions already in it so note that if you're not a fan. There's a smoked sauce for dipping the meat in. I've never had this sauce anywhere else. It's a fun one but I'm not sure I especially like it with my pho. The taste of it is stronger than the pho broth. Checked out Hanoi House for an early dinner. Upon entering the space was inviting. Customer service and intake was welcoming. Upon reviewing the menu I ordered the tofu summer rolls and the chicken based pho. The summer rolls ingredients were fresh. The Chicken pho was good but the flavor was somewhat muted. I think next time I will try the beef variant. I do recommend Hanoi house if you're in the neighborhood and want some drinks and small bites.
