Loved this OG pub, nostalgic for my college days at Hennessy's!! This one has an indoor/outdoor setup with casual neighborhood pub vibe. Came for the Thursday Smashburger special for $7! This is not your ordinary smashburger. It's a double and comes with bacon and fries on the side that are lightly crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The burger is delicious: double smashed beef patties with double cheese, bacon, lettuce (came nicely shaved) and tomato (I added L&T and they were n/c). That's right. All that for $7!! We stopped here for a drink before leaving Laguna Beach. We both enjoyed the drink of the month, an electric blue lemonade. We were invited to choose our own table, which was really nice. We sat outside on the sidewalk, so we were outdoors but not in the direct sunlight. The drinks were really good and, in my opinion, reasonably priced! The waitress was professional and attentive. Service was a 10/10 both downstairs and upstairs! The reason for the missing star is because we went there 1/18/25 for a bachelorette party and your DJ sucked! 0/10! He was also extremely rude to multiple people, at one point he snatched my phone out of my hands because I asked him if he can play a using my phone to type it out. And he didn't like it and snatched my phone out of my hands. Song choices were poor, he couldn't read the room. Get a new DJ please! Also shout to out the bartender upstairs! Saw they had some $5 weekday happy hour specials 4-7pm so we were drawn in by the promise of a reasonably priced drink in this expensive town. The friendly waitress took our order and in flash was back with a good tasting Moscow Mule and a Ruby Fizz which my wife thoroughly enjoyed. This is literally the worst place I have ever been. A group of 15 of us were finishing out a weeklong writers' retreat in Laguna Beach. I called ahead to see if we needed to make reservations. The guy on the phone said, "No, you'll be fine. I doubt anyone will be here." Karaoke "started" at 8. After a football game and the DJ's set up time, it was 8:30 when it actually started. Now, to be clear, for the duration of the story, WE WERE THE ONLY CUSTOMERS IN THE PLACE. At 8:30, the staff - which included Blakely, the worst bartender with the worst attitude I have ever experienced, and the incredibly rude manager Scott - shut off the lights and turned on a massive rig of strobe lights. Seeing as our group of 15 included a legally blind woman, one person with epilepsy, and another with a seizure condition, we begged them to turn the strobe light off. They agreed to... for 30 minutes. By 9, not a SINGLE person had come upstairs to do karaoke besides us. We, however, were having an absolute blast. I and others were drinking double, top shelf drinks. Nonetheless, the manager announced that they "had to" turn the strobe back on. We pleaded with them, but they said it was "just the rule." They claimed that the strobe light would bring in customers off the COMPLETELY DESERTED street. I argued that it was bad business to kick out 15 paying patrons who planned to stay there all night, especially on an off-season Sunday night, when they had no hopes of replacing us with other customers. I also said multiple times that to force out people due to their disabilities was abominable. But not only did they not care - they seemed to take glee from pushing us out onto the street. To say we spent the rest of the night consoling a traumatized epileptic woman in her 20s - who was on her FIRST EVER trip to the United States - would be an understatement. These people's actions were incredibly cruel and hurtful. It was as if they were telling us that disabled people do not have the right to have fun. They took away what was going to be a great night... And for what? So the place could sit empty for the next 4 hours?? (Btw, when my friend in a pink jacket and I were wrung up, Blakely had put on the receipt, "Pink and crutches." Yep, that's me, a disabled person on crutches who paid for four shots, only to be kicked to the curb by an establishment that makes it very clear that the disabled are not welcome. Glad to know that's how they saw me and my friends.) read more

Thought I'd pick up an order of Shepard's Pie to have on a cold evening. What a mistake. A blob of mashed potatoes, in what looked like, used foil. Just all smashed in the foil. Potatoes were stuck to the foil. So gross. I've never had a restaurant serve "to go" food like this. If you ran out of the correct containers, then notify your customers so we can make a different choice. Tossed it in the garbage. Total waste of time and money. I just happened upon this pub one day while walking around down town. The staff is amazing. Georgette, the bartender is amazing. She was so nice and has a great sense of humor. My wife and I had the greatest time. We went in for a beer and wound up spending most of the day there. The food is great, I suggest the Smash burger . My wife loves the French onion soup and the Aperol Spritz. We have driven back several times just because of the staff there. They treat everyone so nicely. read more

This was the perfect way to end our gem crawl in Laguna beach. We made our way up to the karaoke portion of the bar but it was really loud.we're usually all about that but we've been hopping from place to place. We quickly made our way down to the lower level which was much quieter. We started off with two blackberry margaritas and a mule. First time here and you seat yourself. I got a burger and it was amazing!! They were out of fries so I got the tater tots which were yummy too. Had a drink that had lime, ginger ale and an Irish whiskey in it and it was so good and refreshing that I ordered a second one. The service was awesome. Two amazing employees helped me and my friend (who has a 3m old at home and needed an evening out). I have been to Hennessy's a few more than many times over the years but honestly these two showed a new level of awesomeness while working at the bar inside. Let me put that in my HR words: I was impeccably impressed with the service that your establishment provided. Went for a birthday party. Ordered a margarita and got the wrong drink from Sam who was the waitress. I sipped it and told her and gave it back to her. On my bill she did not take off the wrong drink and charged me also for a spicy margarita which I did not get or order. I may have paid for 2 drinks I did not order. I only had 1 drink a regular margarita. I was billed for 7 drinks I do not think my girlfriend ordered 6 on her own. more like 4 total so I am petty sure I was over billed. I was unable to look at bill before because it was on a little electronic handheld machine but I did ask for a paper copy which I looked at after I got home. Also their tipping is suspect as the paper bill says tip percentages are based on the check price after taxes which is NOT the way tips are customarily computed. I will wait to hear if they will offer a refund for extra drinks when they read this review. By the way the Dublin Burger was really good. read more

Walking into the establishment was assaulted by the scent of stale beer and wine. Okay, it's a bar. We decided to sit in the dining room that didn't have the bar. Fairly priced menu. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger WELL DONE. Got it and it was rare. I made the mistake of calling the waitress over to let her know. Unfortunately her face told me all I needed to know. I don't want your excuses, I want another burger. So after receiving a brand spanking new WELL DONE burger, tastes like plastic. Also the second batch of fries that I got (didn't ask nor want them) tasted totally different. Also don't ask for A1... looks like it was here since they opened. He was very friendly and had a great conversation as he recommended local places to check out while in Laguna Beach. I've been to this bar with a friend once in the past. Absolute nightmare of a business. Me and my wife went in on 2/15/2025 at 5:10 pm. We sat down at a table and waited. There was not much going on most of the patrons were sitting at the bar. Our server "Sam" got our drinks a few minutes after we sat down. Forty minutes later when I asked about our food order, which was taken after Sam dropped off our drinks, Sam said should be right out. I told that it was unacceptable and she scurried off. 10 more minutes went by so we got up and walked to the front and asked for the manager. He shows up and acted so put out he lied and said he checked the ticket and it had only been 16 minutes. This manager basically said me and my wife were lying which made others in the bar laugh at us as we walked out.. I would never have people like Sam and that manager work for me, they are terrible people. read more

The beer and the vessels are appropriately chilled. I typically get the sliders, you get three of them and they have a decent sized patty, and they're delicious and well priced. I noted on the posted menu however that the sliders were not on the menu, full sized burgers are offered instead. I didn't try one because the sidewalk tables were all taken (Coveted by many, I suppose) , so I wandered up Ocean Ave fifty yards to quench my thirst. Laguna has a reputation for being a bit uppity, expensive and bougie. We stumbled on Hennessy's looking for a cool place to watch football and hopefully the added bonus of good food/staff. This place did not disappoint! We were welcomed, offered the chance to sit upstairs (which is a must) and had the best service ever! It's half open air/ half enclosed so you can choose the level of air you feel comfortable with during Covid times. Tyler and Dallas rocked the upstairs bar, offered great service, were super personable to tourists and locals alike and made this stop worth it! We will definitely be coming back! read more

It's tough in Laguna to find a simple bar that focuses on beers and pub food vs. something fancier. Hennessey's Tavern is that place. Just your average pub that's ready to serve you a drink and some bar food. Located in the heart of Laguna, there are two entrances right off Ocean Ave. The first takes you into a dining room with booths and lower dining tables, while the other takes you past an outdoor patio and into the bar. The bar has a wooden bar top with no rail but does have a brass rail attached to the bar edge. Unique, but it won't prevent any spilled beer from rolling onto your knees. There is a brass round footrest below, maybe 10 square padded bar stools with back support. The back bar has bottle shelves, the taps, and two larger HDTVs. Several HDTVs hang throughout the bar, making it an excellent place to watch a game. There are nice wooden floors and a tiled ceiling. The food is above average for pub food and the happy hour menu is a great value. The service is super friendly and fast, making the atmosphere relaxed and fun. You will find all ages of patrons here. Good beer selection, though not a bar for beer snobs. Hennessey's is a great place to grab a drink, bite to eat, and relax while watching the game or socializing.
