We had Serrano pork, spicy pig ear, fried pig intestines with spicy sauce, stir fried bef wit hpickle pepper, cilantro beef, stir-fried with lettuce stem, cumin beef, and Stir-fried tomato and scrambled eggs. Henry's Hunan was recommended to me by some local to San Francisco colleagues, and it couldn't have been a better tip. Tucked into a side street very close to the W Hotel, it was a welcomed break from the crowds around the Moscone. I ordered the Combo Chow Mein, Egg Rolls, and the Onion Cake, and while I don't think I'd get the onion cake again (it was good, but maybe a bit bland), the Chow Mein was wonderful. A pot of green tea is complimentary, and the service is fast and friendly. I will certainly be back the next time I'm in town. read more

Hidden spot! Decided on a last minute lunch and found this restaurant. Food was tasty and service was great - it seemed like a large restaurant , I only saw the front as that was where we sat.... But I could see it went further in. All of the dishes were delicious - We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken, Chinese Green (bok choy), Steamed Noodles w. Ground Pork & Hunan Special, and Sauteed Eggplant. Henry's is tucked away in an alley, but don't let the location fool you--this is some of the best Hunan food I've had. They actually have two separate menus: one with American-style Chinese dishes, and another (you'll need to ask for it) with authentic Hunan specialties. The second menu is what really sets this place apart--it's one of the most authentic selections I've seen. Food: Mongolian Beef (9/10) - Tastes authentic! You can choose a spice level so we got medium and it turned out really spicy but I love spice. The beef was made well and was flavorful. The veggies also added flavor. Sautéed Pig Stomach (8/10) - My first time trying this and I had to get past the texture at first but this was good! Also got medium spicy and it was really spicy. Yum veggies with it as well. Service: We ended up waiting nearly an hour for our food for some reason but it does get busy. It wasn't a wait for us to be seated luckily but I saw a line form eventually while seated. There could also be a bit of a language barrier at times but you'll get by. It wasn't hard to flag down workers and get help because they don't check up on you too often but they were helpful when we did catch them! SPICY FLAVORFUL On the first week of December on Wednesday a co-worker from the Anaheim office took out another co-worker and me for lunch. We ended up eating at Henry's Hunan. I've heard so much about this place. At lunch would be my first time eating at Henry's Hunan. Hunan cuisine tends to be the spicy. I only like two types of spicy food: Thai and fried chicken. I'm open to eat something different. I didn't want to order kung pao chicken or beef. One co-worker suggested Mongolian beef. Since this was my first time here I wanted to order items that I never ate before. I suggested hot and sour beef because I wanted to see if the flavor is similar to hot and sour soup. The co-worker that bought lunch ordered Marty's Special. Instead of rice, combo chow mein was selected. One thing I'll say is after we ordered we didn't get our food for a while; the wait felt like 40 minutes. I understand lunch service that day was busy. I think there was a convention in San Francisco during that week. In addition the industry I work in there was the annual end-of-the-year industry dinner that week. Despite that my co-workers and I felt we shouldn't a while. Also my co-worker had a meeting that she needed to go. When the food arrived because of the wait I hope the items we ordered were exceptional. The hot and sour beef was unique as it had the flavor from the hot and sour soup. The combo chow mein as alright. The item that stood out was the Marty's Special as this dish represents the spicy attributes of this restaurant. One thing I like about Marty's Special was even though it was spicy the dish was flavorful. I detest spicy dishes that are all spicy with no flavor. Marty's Special was spicy and flavorful. The dish wasn't too spicy that I couldn't eat it, but I was sweating during lunch. I would have given Henry's Hunan for a higher rating if not for waiting for our dishes for over 30 minutes. Do I see myself coming back here again? Henry's Hunan is quite a walking distance away from my work as my co-workers and me took an Uber. Our group has been going here for 29 years around people's birthdays. Menu was pared down after pandemic, understandable. Recent visit a bit more disappointing: menu further reduced ( no meat pie, for example) and prices increased by about 50% since last visit in January. Summary: Tasty, face-melting-ly spicy goodness Details: Despite having been around for long than I've been in SF now, I've never really visited Henry's until this year, at the insistence of my wife. Never mind the tried and true claim that 3 stars is key to a good Chinese restaurant: my experiences with Yelp over the years often kept me away from sub-4.5 star spots. I suspect a big reason for the variance here has to do with the vastly different menus available: like a few other spots in the city, there's a Chinese-only menu for those who are in the know, and an English menu for everyone else. The latter is full of your stereotypical American Chinese dishes, while the Chinese menu has a lot of fantastic regional Chinese options, many of which are wildly spicy: even medium spice is enough to get my rarely-phased wife sweating. So, go with someone who knows how to order off the Chinese menu, and maybe start with their less spicy (which is still higher than most spicy spots in SF). Their Dong'an chicken, sour and spicy chicken gizzards, and perilla cucumber soup are all solid starting points. Accessibility: Huge restaurant with plenty of accessible seating. read more

Some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. Absolutely delicious. Great portions, decent prices. But the service is atrocious. Stopped by on a weeknight with my brother on a whim after attending GDC and the place was packed. We stood at the entrance for a good few minutes, awkwardly making eye contact with every waiter who rushed past but didn't acknowledge us, say hi, or even let us know how long the wait would be. When a waiter finally seated us, he was 20 feet away and waving us over to a distant table he was standing next to. We only knew he was trying to communicate with us when we happened to look over and make eye contact with him. Utterly bizarre. Once we were seated, he was nice enough but brusque. All of our interactions with staff here were nothing more than transactional. We weren't even halfway done with our meal when an older man came by and dropped off the check. Rudeness aside, the quality and quantity of the food was almost enough to make up for it (almost). We went with the hot and sour soup, Mongolian beef, and chicken with string bean. The Mongolian beef actually had some legit spiciness and the beef was tender without being so overly soft that it feels like it's disintegrating. The string beans were crisp. The hot and sour soup had a perfect balance of the two flavor profiles. We had more than enough leftovers for us to split between us. I've been thinking about this meal since I had it weeks ago. Unfortunately, if I decide to eat here again, I'll have to deal with the service, and it's enough to give me pause about returning. The service could use some work. Our table ordered a few sodas and the waiter just placed them all in front of one of my coworker who was then responsible for distributing them. After we got all the items we ordered, the waiter never came back to check on us. When we got the final bill, there was some confusion on how to pay it. Apparently we're supposed to walk to the cashier at the front of the restaurant. A big space near fidi with a good amount of tables. It is a bit of a no frills place with quick service and good food. The servers are always nice and quick to respond when asked for something or a question. They have a good range of authentic and some "American Chinese" dishes. We have gotten delivery from them for our team lunch in the office many times and we have gone to the restaurant for dinner countless times as well. It's always a filling and delicious meal. We got the hunan rice noodles which I really enjoyed as well as the sour and spicy potatoes - definitely had a great sour and spicy kick to it (more than other Chinese restaurants around). I will say the mapo tofu was the only let down as the taste wasn't as authentic as I expected it to be. Also be wary that most dishes are spicy! How much you like Henry's Hunan depends on how much you care about authentic Chinese cuisine. The restaurant itself is in an alley tucked in SOMA. The interior vibes appear largely unchanged from the era when it opened, and the seating and service are pretty typical for this genre. However, the dishes are absolutely true to form. You'll find large portions, truly spicy seasoning, and unapologetically foreign dishes such as bullfrog with zisu. My favorite include the spicy smoked pork with garlic leek. Don't forget to order rice. If you're more used to Chinese American dishes, there is a menu with the standards available, but this isn't the place you'd go for that. read more

One of the best places to get lunch when in the FiDi area. It is tucked away in one of the alleys near salesforce park and it is a classic Chinese restaurant. It can get pretty packed during the lunch hours but the staff are very efficient and helpful, noticing that we needed rice for some of the dishes we ordered. Onion Cake - This green onion pancake didn't remind me of the classic flakey ones with many layers. It was more crispy and roti-like with a light flavor. Dumplings - Love ordering this as a starter dish. The skin is thick and the meat mixture inside was hot and flavorful. It is a nice balance of salty, sour and a kick of spice from the chili oil sauce. Henry's Special - Our favorite dish to order here. The portions are pretty filling, especially this dish that is packed with scallops, shrimp, chicken and a variety of vegetables. It is punchy, rich, spicy and best eaten with rice. Curry Chicken - The curry was a nice contrast from our other main dish. This was a little spicy but had a good sweet flavor and tender chicken. Pickled Chili w. beef: 4.5/5. Same flavor as before, extremely spicy if you didn't opt for less spicy when ordering, you may not feel the hit in the first few seconds, then it will come back and hit hard, keep drinking iced water or beverages will help, but the after taste will linger for a while. I've never loved Chinese food so much that it made me think, If I move to San Francisco, I need to live near Henry's Hunan. Luckily, they were open when I went. The closest location was in the Financial District (SoMa). Good thing I checked their hours -- we almost planned a Saturday lunch, but like a lot of businesses in the area, they're closed on weekends. So I rushed down Friday afternoon, 45 minutes before closing, and ordered way too much food: -Kung Pao Chicken -Green Beans with Garlic (no meat) -Mongolian Beef -Chicken Fried Rice All spicy. Not medium, not mild, not "no spice" but {{ spicy }}. That's a whole lot of food for just my wife and me. And since we were staying at The Clancy a few blocks away, warming it up properly wasn't going to happen. But... it is hard to explain just how good this food was. Mouth-watering, bold, spicy flavors you just don't get from the over-gourmet, Americanized Chinese food. We've got favorites down in LA (like Yang Chow), but this was something else. Authentic, fire-packed, and so good you'll eat more later even if you're already full. Not kidding!!! I reheated the leftovers in the tiny hotel microwave the next day. And I was already full from eating lunch. But I just couldn't let it go to waste. The Kung Pao chicken and Mongolian beef were next level. The chicken was diced just right and soaked up the flavors for every bite. The Mongolian beef? Usually chewy at most spots. Here, it was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The green beans were fresh, crisp, and loaded with garlic, sauce, and spicy chili flakes. And the chicken fried rice? Perfect mix of veggies and chicken bits. Yes. Spicy. Henry's used to have almost a cult following. I first went there in 1981, when Henry himself was cooking. Sadly, it has changed hands and has gone horribly downhill. The food had changed - it's no longer Hunan-themed, but is now just another cookie-cutter Chinese restaurant. Even the legendary smoked ham is gone! And the food is now poorly made. My dry-fried string beans were way over-salted, salt being the inly discernible flavor. My companion's Mongolian beef was mostly just flavorless onions with a sprinkling of beef. And they screwed up the order. And insisted that it was our fault. (It wasn't.) Slow, incompetent and surly service (if that's the word) is not endearing. And the service was indeed very, very slow, even though the place was nearly empty at lunchtime. In short: Avoid! It's now run by incompetent idiots. Bad food and bad service. What's not to like? Picked this place for Christmas Eve dinner, post watching a movie at the Metreon. We ordered egg rolls, kung pao chicken, and a pork noodle dish. The egg rolls were fine, it's stuff wrapped up and deep fried, it can only be so great or terrible. The kung pao chicken was very good, and there was a lot of it. The noodle dish was also very good, and also a lot of it. We took a bunch of food home. I enjoyed the service. It's a little different. Younger guy seated us, ran off to support other customers, came back for our order, all good there. The first thing that came out was the kung pao chicken. We waited a bit, and then an older guy came through, looked at us, said "wait, you want rice with that, right?" We said yes, and in a few minutes we had rice. That worked out. Maybe 8-10 minutes later, the noodle dish came out. That was great. Then maybe about the same amount of time the egg rolls came out. It's kind of weird to get something considered an appetizer last, way last, but it was fine, and maybe they didn't see it the same way. New Menu! And Excellent! But see also my bit towards end about their lunch specials. Sometime after 2026-02-17, and by 2026-03-17 Henry's very substantially changed the menu! Gone are many of the old favorites, though some of the old favorites very much remain. I'd say probably about 2/3 to 3/4 or so of the menu is totally changed! About same number of items. Most or all of what's been added, very authentic (as far as I can tell, and those that were with me know even more) very authentic Hunan dishes. So, even less of the typical Americanized - even for San Francisco and Chinatown or thereabouts - Hunan, and much more authentic. And Henry's never disappoints! I've been coming to Henry's for decades, and the first thing that struck me coming in the door on 2026-03-17 was - it smelled fantastic! It always smelled good - and familiar to me, but this was different, and damn good! So, if you want or are expecting run-of-the-mill Hunan (relatively Americanized), this is not your place. But if you want friggin' amazingly delicious and highly authentic, this is the place for you! Prices on most dishes remain quite reasonable, but with the new menu, there do exist some moderate number of dishes that can get quite pricey - into the forty-something dollar range, maybe even grazing fifty. But most dishes remain quite reasonable for the great quality one gets, and many are very generous too in the portions. There were three of us that dined there, and though we'd more typically with earlier menu, do soup and/or appetizer, generally rice all 'round, and about one entree per person, or N-1, this time we went for just rice and two entrees for the three of us - figured we could always order bit more if we wanted or needed. And it was more than enough, all of us quite sufficiently filled, if not stuffed (though we did also go for an additional round of rice, as that was nice and helped with all the delicious very spiciness that we all also enjoyed), and we still had a modest bit remaining after, which we absolutely didn't let go to waste - I took that home, and it was consumed soon thereafter. Yeah, so delicious there, even after I was quite full, I couldn't stop but nibbling at it. And even as I packed the bit of leftovers, full as I was, the fantastic smell made me want to eat yet more of it. Over the decades, other than some modest price increases over the years, Henry's hasn't made many menu changes. This is a really big change - quite the overhaul, but the results do not disappoint at all! Prior change, a few years back or so, they mostly streamlined the menu - got rid of about 2/3 of their very extensive menu - which used to be quite huge - and very much streamlined it - perhaps in part needed for business reasons (the restaurant business in that general area isn't nearly what it was before COVID-19, though it's slowly grown back to at least a sizeable portion of what it was before). Before that they basically had the same unchanged menu for decades. Anyway, yeah, now quite different. Gone is the only soup they had left - hot and sour - and added are two new soups they've never had before. All the appetizers are gone except for their very good dumplings which they've basically had since forever. A fair number of the old favorites, e.g. Henry's Special, remain, but many are gone, and lots of new dishes, and they do not disappoint! Many of the dishes, including probably at least a fair percentage among the new, can be made to different hot spiciness levels, but I believe many of them, due to their very nature, can't be made mild, and perhaps some fair percentage can't even be made medium. But yes, fair number certainly can. Use common sense, and ask if one isn't sure. They almost always ask you "how spicy" - at least if that can be varied on the dish, but if it's a dish where the main ingredient is, e.g. Serrano peppers and very clear that from the name of the dish (we had one of those dishes, and it was fantastic!), yeah, don't expect to be able to get mild, and maybe not even medium with such a dish. So, Henry's delicious as always, never disappoints, and there's never been a "bad" dish on the menu, all are at least pretty dang good, if not way above that (many/most are!) But this is not the menu of old, not even all that close. But damn is it good! So, yeah, menu change, certainly lost some old friends, but gained many more friggin' amazingly delicious new friends - so really nothing to complain about, and overall I very much like the change. And very nice to have a Hunan restaurant that leans very heavily into the authentic, is pretty dang unique - even for San Francisco, and is now even fair bit further from the mostly sameishness that most of the Hunan restaurants tend to more-or-less all cover in common. Yeah, this is different, and damn good! Menu also has lunch specials - that part of the menu may not be (as) changed. read more

Great Food. Very tasty and Very Fresh. I've been going here since I moved into my Office 20 or so years ago. Frank is an odd guy. He can be quite condescending, and a passive aggressively insulting sorta guy, but most everyone else there are nice. The Cooks and Waiters are almost always quite pleasant, occasionally some are a little dismissive. I get the impression some of the folks there don't much like "Round Eyes."
