The top of our chips bowl was big whole chips just below the top layer was a bowl full of crumbs. The salsa was excellent. The frozen margarita was completely liquid, but they served it that way. When I questioned it, the lady said the machine is broken and I said then why did you serve this to me? They took it back and poured it over ice. I noticed they continue to serve that completely liquid frozen margarita. My enchiladas were lukewarm. My guests fajitas were sizzling hot. So came back and got the fajita plate. The beef fajita was so tender and delicious. The seasoning was perfect. We got a mixed plate and the chicken was alright. The outside had a wait and the inside was almost empty which is crazy being in Texas. My husband and I couldn't finish it so we had to take some home. The portion was perfect for two people. We decided to give this restaurant another chance, and that the wrong decision! We got there around 2pm on a Saturday and it was not busy at all yet somehow the hostesses wasn't sure where to seat us on the open patio. Our server was attentive and nice, and the drinks were okay- that's all the positive I can say. Our food was less than awful, and should be very embarrassing to the owners! We ordered queso and fajitas; the beef was a chunk of pot roast, the chicken was barely cooked fully, and the shrimp had to have been defrosted under warm water and thrown onto the skillet as it was leaving the kitchen. Sitting outside is great for the kids to run around while waiting, then they can eat and play again while you enjoy the rest of your meal. Well, we grew up with Herbert's in San Marcos. So we know this place. The New Braunfels location is much closer to us, yea. We have been to this location twice. First time, service was pretty slow, but they got our order correct and was quick. Food got to our table before our drinks. This time, service was a bit better, but our order was done incorrect, and the food was okay. We have faith in this place, because we grew up with the family. We love to try the local places in any town that we are in, so we gave Herbert's a try. There was no line on a Saturday evening, which caused me a little concern. I was impressed with the look and feel of the restaurant, especially with a huge patio. We were seated and promptly greeted by our waitress. We ordered margaritas which were good and strong. We also order the Queso and the waitress upsold us to add ground beef. That was a mistake. The Queso was slightly watered down and the grease from the meat just made it worse. It didn't have much flavor, which seemed to be a common denominator in all the food. I had the beef enchiladas which lacked any seasoning whatsoever. They looked great but failed miserably. Good thing for the salsa from the chips that helped make them palatable. My wife had the street tacos, which were not all too bad, but could have used much more seasoning. The salsa also saved that dish. Overall the restaurant food was not up to par and we were highly disappointed. They've got a good thing going. The foods pretty dang good And the portions are fairly large with that said I do feel that it is a little pricey for Mexican food But at the same time as one of the better next can restaurant in New Braunfels Texas. There is indoor and outdoor seating, the facility is kept fairly clean and most times the staff is on point. My favorites include the chalupas, Crispy tacos and enchiladas. Why four stars and not five: as previously mentioned most visits the staff does the job well but there have been a few instances where the waitstaff wasn't so great. *Poor *Decent *Good *great *Best *JLFoodie Certified Food. Ordered food online in the middle of (what I'm sure was) their dinner rush. I asked for them to draw a dinosaur on my box fully expecting them not to be able/want to. When I went to pick up my food the staff was friendly, but obviously super slammed; my dinosaur hopes were dashed. When I opened my bag I was pleasantly surprised to find this masterpiece staring back at me. I called to thank the workers, and the man who picked up the phone was nice and said the artist "really wanted to do it." Other than that, the food was great! Haven't been in a few months due to the overcrowding on that side of town. We did go in Friday March 8, 2024. Our waitress was Wonderful and she was REWARDED WELL for her service. The Cheese Enchilada plate Was HORRIBLE! The sauce was tan and tasted like flour and oil and maybe Pepper. I wish I had not been as hungry as I was. For starters, this place has great outdoor seating and a playscape for the kiddos. While the party I came with chose to sit inside, I could definitely see myself coming back and enjoying a marg (or 2!) and some chip and queso while the kids play. Anyhow, everyone is my group of five settled pretty quickly on street tacos with a delightful green sauce that made me forget that I didn't have guacamole. The only thing I'd change is having the onions sautéed instead of raw. All in all, pretty good though. Always a solid choice for Mexican food, whether we are driving through San Marcos or New Braunfels. Sometimes, when we really get that craving that we know nothing in San Antonio can suffice, we make the short trek to NB for a night out at Herbert's. Hands down, best carne guisada north of Falfurrias. The queso is a good quality queso, its not definitely not fake nacho cheese. They have updated their menu since our last visit. Now they offer 3 sizes of queso. The prices increased ever so slightly on some menu items, nothing more than $2 price increase. There is seating inside, tables and booths, outside - where they often have live music and a bar area. They also have a playscape outside for the little ones. They also have a party room available off the patio, towards the back of the property. TVs all around inside, but not obnoxiously in the way of things. The chips come out warm, with their fresh made salsa, which can vary in spicy-ness, since its fresh made daily! Skip the bean, order double rice. I love their rice so much. And the tortillas are the perfect thickness, not too thick, not too thin. Just right. Restaurant is clean, ample parking, the parking lot is big, but on a crowded night, it can be a tight squeeze to find a space to park. I've always had such friend wait staff. The hubs did order the "Big Boy Burrito" for a change this trip, and it was that. Big! And flavorful. Stuffed with tender beef fajita, lettuce, rice, tomato and refried beans, smothered in enchilada sauce and queso. This was a change up for him, he typically goes for "Anthony's Deluxe Plate" but I guess he was extra hungry this past Saturday. read more

Well well well, where to start.. after a reasonable 35 minute wait we were seated. Chips and salsa came out first.. the salsa was tasteless and was not spicy what so ever. The order was placed, two enchilada dinner plates and a kid's quesadilla plate. Pee wee's plate came out first just as requested. His food was so un-flavorful he didn't even want to indulge in it. We didn't realize it until we tried it.. the chicken in his quesadilla appeared to have been boiled. There was no flavor whatsoever. After seeing what he was presented with, I can not blame him for not wanting to eat it. The two enchilada dinners came out, they were both lukewarm, at best. The beans appeared as they were also boiled and not refried. They were bland and crusty. The best part of the evening was the margarita and the kids play space outside. The waitress (Becky)was awesome and catered to our needs the best she could with the cards she was dealt with. Due to the salsa tasting like ketchup Becky was asked if there was anything with more heat or flavor. She stated she would bring out a chile toreado. A huge single jalapeño was brought out. It had a nice char to the exterior of the pepper. Upon cutting into it a clear oily substance leaked out and covered my plate. I transferred the pepper to a side plate so the unknown substance could be withdrawn from the pepper. After the unknown substance was finished secreting. The "jalapeño" was more like bell pepper and was flavorless as well. After asking for a bill a quick glance over at the plate that housed the "jalapeño" juice was coagulated. The unknown substance that filled the crevice of the "jalapeño"was nothing but oil. At least I can say the oil is changed frequently, so frequent that even the oil was un-flavorful. If you are looking for a spot for good drinks and a place for the kids to play, it's perfect. If you are going in an attempt to receive good "Mexican food since 1976" (per herbertstx.com) look elsewhere. The name Herbert fits, I guess. read more

One of the worst Tex Mex restaurants I've ever been to. They have better texmex outside of Texas... sadly. The outdoor play area is pretty nice for kids and the drinks are fine but the food is trash. My husband and I visited on Saturday, January 4th at about 7pm. When we arrived the parking lot was full, we still got a great spot & when we entered there was one other couple waiting to be seated. The host sat them promptly & then sat us. We were placed in the far back corner, away from most of the tv's (mush to the hubby's dismay as there were playoff games on. I didn't care the Texans had just won as we walked into the door!!) We were brought warm chips, yummy salsa & menus quickly. Shortly thereafter our server, Reyna arrived and took our drink order. I asked about their Sangria margarita and it was highly recommended, so I ordered it & the small queso to pair with the salsa. Let me tell you the salsa and queso mixed was so so good & that Sangria margarita was spot on good. I had the Herberts special with beef enchiladas, a crispy taco and I opted for a bean/cheese chalupa (it comes with a guacamole chalupa.) My hubby had the Anthony special (2 enchiladas-he chose shredded chicken w/the house enchilada sauce, beef fajita tacos and a chalupa.) He devoured the enchiladas & he's not normally an enchilada fan. Both our meals were awesome. Reyna was beyond attentive, friendly and personable-she was everything a server should be!
